WOW October 2010 1

On October 31st the Romans had a huge celebration to honorPomona, the goddess of fruit. They did this to thank her forthe harvest. People played games, ran races and enjoyed abig feast. They offered her apples and nuts. Ever since appleshave been a big part of Halloween.

Give each player an apple cut in half. The aim is to countthe seeds found in your apple, to reveal something aboutyour future. Two seeds meant an early marriage, three - aninheritance; four - great wealth, five - a trip across the ocean, and six - fame. Seven was the best of all as this meant that allthe person’s wishes would come true.

Give each child an apple, friut knife and a plate. The children eachhave to peel their apple, the winner is the one who produces thelongest and narrowest peeling. In times past times traditionallyyou would peel a green apple in one long, winding piece. Swingthe peeling over your head three times singing:

Paring, paring, long and green,Tell my fate for Halloween.

Then drop the paring behind you. When it forms the shape ofa letter, that letter is believed to be the first initial of the personyou will marry.

Catwalk into fashion...

Tickets cost £20 per to include a champagne reception, canapés and a fashion catalogue. For further information about The Countryside on the Catwalk or to purchase tickets, please contact Kate Calnan on [email protected] or 07850 018069.

This October, the Northamptonshire Countryside Alliance will be leading the way into next year with style as they host their fashion show for the second time. Countryside on the Catwalk is taking place at The Big Barn, Ashley on Thursday 7th October 2010, show casing a range of clothing from local and well known fashion houses to inspire fashion lovers as to what they should

be wearing at any countryside related event through the winter.

Starting at 6.30pm with a champagne reception and a chance to browse a wide selection of stalls, the fashion show itself takes as its theme a winter walk though countryside events taking place from September to March and dressed by top names including Purdey, Really Wild Company and Moloh.

Modelling the clothes will be

a selection of ladies, gentleman, girls and boys who are all part of our local countryside. The events featured are a mix of local and national, from the hunt ball to Cheltenham Festival, a day’s shooting to a Host a Roast dinner and Christmas drinks to a Scottish Salmon River bank.

Kate Calnan, committee member of the Northamptonshire Countryside Alliance and inspiration behind the event comments: “Last year’s show was so successful that we were asked to do it all again as it is so different to anything else. It’s an event for all ages and for anyone who’s interested in fashion and the best country clothes – and that goes for men and women. Last year was a sell-out and we are confident that this year is going to be even better!”

The evening will finish at 9.30pm after guests have had a chance to win prizes in a fabulous raffle draw and browse and purchase at the retailers stalls that are supporting the event.

If you are over 16 and would like to give Netball a try, get yourself along to the Dome at Harborough Leisure Centre on Saturdays betewwn 12 and 1.30. Sessions are led by coaches and cost only £2 each. No need to book. To find out more call 01858 821 284._____________________

Defending The Caveman

WeDnesDay 20 OCTOber This hilarious, award-winning show is touring the UK once again and is stopping to enter-tain Wellingborough audiences for one night only on Wed 20 Oct, 7.30pm.

This latest production of the international hit show stars Mark Little; the much-loved ac-tor, comedian and TV person-ality – formerly Joe Mangel in Neighbours!

Mark has the task of prov-ing to the British public that

men are not ALL revolting – just different! “This play is a humorous saga celebrating the non-evolution of man. The Caveman is dead, long live the Caveman”, says Mark.

The longest running solo play in Broadway history, Defending the Caveman is one man’s light-hearted look /amusing musing on the fundamental differences between the sexes; a hilarious-ly funny and horribly truthful show that appeals to men and women of all ages.

DefenDing The Cavemanis at The Castle Theatre, Wed 20 Oct, 7.30pm. Castle Way, Wellingborough, NN8 1XA. For tickets call the box office on 01933 270 007 or online at www.thecastle.org.uk. Defending The Caveman is recommended for age 16 and over. Tickets £17.50

Such is its universal and timeless appeal, the show has become a truly global phenom-enon; translated in over 15 lan-guages and toured in over 30 countries worldwide. Original-ly created and performed by Rob Becker in San Francisco in 1991, it has been seen by over 5 million people across the world; from Germany, to Switzerland and Russia - to America, Australia and South Africa.

If you’re married, see this

show! If you’re dating, see this show! If you’re single…. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS SHOW!

MOn 18th OctOberCBeebies’ favourite double-act Chris and Pui are coming to town!

Fresh from their hit show ‘Show Me Show Me’, they invite you to join them at De Montfort Hall .

Chris Jarvis and Pui Fan Lee have been the main faces on CBeebies since it started

Show Me

and remain top of the tots with their new high rating show shown every weekday on CBeebies.

Now you can finally meet them and have a giggle with them too in their fabulous new roadshow packed with fantastic songs, games and a few surprises along the way.

Saturday 9 OctOberThe Castle are delighted to welcome Chalkfoot Theatre Productions as they tour with the revival of the acclaimed 2009 production Laurel and Hardy. See Tom McGrath’s play performed on Sat 9 Oct, 7.30pm.

During their trailblazing comedy careers, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy appeared in over 100 films. Their influence is clear even today: no comic partnership can avoid comparison with these iconic figures and new generations of fans continue to discover their work through film and the internet.

This touring production of Laurel and Hardy takes the audience through the highs and lows of Stan and Ollie’s film careers: from schoolboy Stan Laurel’s first attempt at stand-up comedy in a Glasgow variety theatre to the disastrous French/Italian movie “Atoll K”, which was one of the last films they made together.

However, McGrath’s play is no conventional showbiz tribute. It begins in a limbo-

Laurel & hardy

like waiting room where Stan and Ollie spend their time in nostalgic banter about the old days: bickering and making up, swapping gags and re-enacting some of the most memorable comedy routines in cinema history. Reluctant to let go of their earthly lives, the pair must re-live the bad times as well as the good before they can move on to comic immortality.

The roles of Stan and Ollie are played by uncanny lookalikes Neil Bromley (Laurel) and Simon Lloyd (Hardy). Neil Bromley is an actor, writer and comedian (formerly half of another double-act, Gonoude and Bromley) while Simon Lloyd comes to the production straight from a successful West End run in The 39 Steps.

LaureL & hardy Is at The Castle Theatre, Sat 9 Oct, 7.30pm. Castle Way, Wellingborough, NN8 1XA. For tickets call the box office on 01933 270 007 or online at www.thecastle.org.uk. Tickets for this production are priced £16 (£14) and Friends get £2 off.

Claire Sweeney, one of the UK’s best-loved personalities, takes centre stage in this national tour. She joins a stream of legendary musical theatre stars to take on the role – Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman and Denise Van Outen – but it was originally conceived for

MOn 25 - saT 30 OcTOberNorthampton Amateur Operatic Company return to The Cripps Hall this October to present ‘Je-sus Christ Superstar’ The Ama-teurs are an award winning company and have been part of Northampton’s entertainment scene for over a hundred years.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ is the third collaboration penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The show premiered in 1971 and it’s huge success catapulted the Lloyd Webber/Rice partner-ship to fame.

The show tells the story of the last days of Christ from his triumphal arrival in Jerusalem to his crucifixion. It also attempts to portray how Judas’s concerns and eventual disaffection lead to his betrayal.

All the songs in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ form an integral part of the story and include such numbers as ‘Heaven On Their Mind’, ‘Everything’s Alright’, ‘ Ho-

J.c. superstar

sanna’, ‘ I Don’t Know Him’ as well as the magnificent title song.

The Lloyd Webber/Rice musi-cals are rarely made available for amateur companies to perform so the Amateurs were delighted to be among a small number of amateur groups granted the rights for 2010.

We have been very fortunate to gather together a really strong and talented cast to perform ‘Su-perstar’ and are confident that the audiences will go away feel-ing that they have had a really great theatrical experience.

Fri 15 tO Sat 30 OctOberJohn Webster’s legendary tale of Renaissance evil, The Duch-ess of Malfi, takes to Northamp-ton’s Royal stage from Friday 15 to Saturday 30 October. This new version of the classic play is adapted and directed by Royal & Derngate’s Artistic Director Laurie Sansom, fresh from the success of the Young America season which transferred to the National Theatre in London for a sell-out run.

Lust, vengeance and madness collide in John Webster’s devastat-ing Jacobean masterpiece, based on actual events, set amongst the corruption and claustrophobia of a 16th Century Italian court.

The Duchess remains one of the stage’s most compel-ling and complex characters.

the Duchess of Malfi

Charting her secret marriage to commoner Antonio and the subsequent hounding by her Machiavellian brothers, the play is an extraordinary vision of one woman’s courage and dignity in the face of a dark and terrifying world. In this electrifyng new production the iconic role of the Duchess is played by Charlotte Emmerson, whose recent cred-its include Serenading Louie at the Donmar and the title role in Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin at the National Theatre.

Laurie Sansom’s atmos-pheric adaptation features mad-rigal singers performing music by influential late-Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo, the Prince of Venosa, under the musical direction of acclaimed British counter tenor, Jonathan

Peter Kenny. One of early mu-sic’s most notorious individuals, Gesualdo’s murderous past is echoed in his painfully beautiful madrigals obsessed with love, guilt and retribution.

Friday 15th OCtOBErAcclaimed filmmaker Zack Sny-der makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adven-ture “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” based on the beloved Guardians of Ga’Hoole books by Kathryn Lasky. The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his fa-ther’s epic stories of the Guard-ians of Ga’ Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all

Legend of Guardians

of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling.

But Kludd’s jealousy has ter-rible consequences—causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians—Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl king-doms.

If you’ve never heard the name of Krystle Warren, then here’s ample proof of the power of WOW’s preview pages. We don’t need to tell you how to sample the Kansas City singer’s wares on the internet, and once you’ve done so all we’ll need to say is, “See you at the Stables.”

Krystle tip

Krystle’s a little bit jazz, a little bit blues, folk and pop – an original best compared to influences from Rufus Wainwright to Betty Carter, Willie Nelson to Nina Simone. A great new talent ready to break big.

Let’s just come right out and say it: Marina and the Diamonds are WOW’s fave pop act of 2010, packing cheeky retro tunes of an ‘80s bent into the singles chart and a veritable exegesis of self-analytical paranoid angst into the Album of the Year, The Family Jewels. And did we mention squeaky vocal mannerisms? Millions of killer tunes?

A welsh lass of Cypriot origins, Marina is of course quite insane: you only have to glance at her curious

cheerleader chic and focus in on a single phrase of introverted, boastful psychobabble to realise that. But, Lordie, it’ll be fun watching her have a bit of a bop and a squeal, and effortlessly knock also-rans such as Bush, Amos and our Florence into a cocked hat.

There aren’t many acts who could follow that; but Robert Plant is a revelation live. Hear the double-Grammy blues growl, yelp and rumble behind all the Led Zep juggernauts and such solo classics as 1988’s triple platinum ‘Now and Zen’…

High-intensity Irish comic Tom-my Tiernan would like to take this chance to flag up some hot new acts on the scene: There’s “Brian O’Brian – a sword swal-lower with a pacemaker. He opens his throat, plunges the steel and gets any FM station in the world to play through his nip-ples.” Look out also for “Rex – a dog ventriloquist with a human dummy. The dummy can only say ‘sausages’, but it’s a good laugh.” And then there’s “Busty McMahon – a post-op person of smaller stature who dresses up as a giant tit and then shoots low fat squirting cream over the crowd.”

Gotcha, Tom. But strangely no mention of Felix Dexter: no tit, but instead a fount of wonder-ful and eccentric characters, described by the Guardian as an “excellent, explosive and exhila-rating performer. Ptoof!

here’s a lot more to Mark Little than ‘80s beach barbies with Kylie and Jason. He’s a veteran of the

Edinburgh Festival with a string of one-man stand-up shows, and has been in 15 feature films. TV slots include Wish You Were Here, The Big Breakfast, and even a guest role in Emmerdale. In 2000, he won a coveted Olivier Award for the one-man play ‘Defending The Caveman’ – a role which he has recently reprised to rave reviews, and is touring in the Midlands this month..

Tell us a little bit about being a Caveman…

Oh, the play is a massive hit. It ran in the West End for longer than any other one-man play in recent years. In America it holds the record for the longest one-man run on Broadway. They named a street after it I think – Caveman Avenue!

Olivier Award winner Mark Little shakes off the shackles of ‘Joe Mangel’ – and talks Caveman to WOW’s Derek Hammond

It’s an American play, but the material about understanding the opposite sex is clearly timeless, universal…

The Americans lapped it up, but even when we won the award I was walking a bit of a tightrope as we weren’t allowed to change the lecture parts or the therapy element to suit an English audience. Then recently the rights were sold and the new owners came to me again, and now it’s far better adapted to resolving the battle of the sexes for England. If the original play won an Olivier Award, then this version deserves three!

Did you see the headlines this week? ‘Kylie Embarrassed About Neighbours Past’. She doesn’t want them to show reruns of her marrying Jason!

Kylie, Jason, Guy Pearce, they should all be embarrassed! I’m embarrassed! It was just a little job I did before the next Scorsese film came along. It was never meant to last. Neighbours was like Dr Who, you could transmogrify. I had a son called Toby and one day he came home with a new head!

It must have given your career a bit of a lift?

Well, yes and no. I was finished with Neighbours when I first went to Edinburgh; but Neighbours was running two years behind here and my time was peaking on air. I came to England to do my stand-up everybody went mental. ‘You are Joe Mangel’! ‘You will be Joe Mangel forever’!

What are your plans post Caveman? More stand-up, or another play?

I’ll be touring another one-man play called ‘A Stretch Of The Imagination’. It’s about a 100-year-old hermit at the end of his life. It’s quite surreal, absurd, touching,

funny, deep. It shows off my classically trained acting skills quite well! It was Critic’s Choice in Time Out. It’s a really good play, very funny. It’s very Australian, very smart. Which is odd!

You’re an old-school alternative comic at heart, aren’t you?

Oh, I’m ancient. An old dinosaur of comedy. The Caveman thing has been very good to me, so I’m letting him get me over the Russell Brand/Michael McIntyre era of comedy, and now I reckon young people are ready again for strong, adult, political, revolutionary comedy. Yes, I’ll be doing more stand-up.

Your final word on ‘Defending The Caveman’?

It’s a classic night out, especially for couples to come, to look at each other and their relationships and try to figure out why they bother to be together! I’ll help them with a bit of a comic analysis they’ll remember forever. It’s a beaut!

Apart from your father and Pierre Fournier, which of the musicians you’ve played with has most inspired you? And who has most surprised you?

I have been so lucky to work with so many wonderful musicians! I’ve learned as much from non-classical musicians like Elton John, Cleo Laine and Stephane Grappelli as anyone. But I would have to say that playing and recording Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Yehudi Menuhin conducting was a beautiful experience in every way.

WOW’s Tracy Webber enjoys a chinwag with Julian Lloyd Webber

The In Harmony programme is a wonderful idea for inspiring kids from deprived areas. How did you get involved?

I have always believed that playing music should be for every child - not just the ones whose parents can afford to pay for instruments and lessons. In Harmony enables children from some of the poorest communities in England to do this. The effect on the children and their families has been extraordinary - it is the most exciting thing I’ve ever been involved with!

Please tell us all about your 17th-century Stradivarius cello.

It is a wonderful instrument that has been my ‘partner’ for twenty seven years! It is called the ‘Barjansky Stradivarius’ after the Russian cellist who played it in the early years of last century. It is certainly the best cello I have ever played - but I don’t really regard it as ‘mine’ -or even my bank manager’s! I am merely it’s custodian over the period I play it.

What would you rate/recommend as your favourite of all cello concertos?

The Elgar concerto is an extraordinary

work of art - the culmination of Elgar’s genius. Shostakovich’s First concerto is another great introduction to the cello.

Apart from cello music, what other types of music do you enjoy listening to? And do you ever pick up and play any other instruments – either not very well, or just for fun?

I like lots of different music, from my boyhood ‘pop’- Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers to Bossa Nova - Tom Jobim, Astrud and Bebel Gilberto to all kinds of contemporary artists like Goldfrapp, Kelis and even Dubstep - which makes me fall about laughing! As far as playing other instruments, I used to enjoy playing the trumpet as a child until one day my father sold it to one of his student’s at the Royal College of Music! Obviously he failed to appreciate my trumpeting abilities!

MAKE SURE YOU’RE BEAUTY, NOT THE BEAST...

October isn’t all about Halloween and half term, endless horror film re runs and complaining about the clocks going back. No October a great month full of exciting new trends.

First up we have something I call ‘glunge’ which is a com-bination of red hot glamour and grunge. Think posh frock, killer heels and smoky eyes teamed with big volume out of bed hair over backcombed with a generous splash of sea

Eve, 1949.It was in the Victorian era

that so many of our great Christmas traditions were first instigated. The Christmas tree was first decorated by Prince Albert and the Royal Family, while Charles Dickens revived many a dying tradition to create a template

for snowy carollers outdoors and cosy family excess indoors.

Now Rockingham Castle is to be transformed, taken back in time to the classic era of great, flickering fires, the Great Hall table straining under the weight of seasonal fayre being ferried up from below stairs. Best of all , it will be possible for visitors to walk right back into this world via a fully costumed recreation, and watch the likes of the Butler, Governess, Footman and Housekeeper

make their final Christmas preparations.

With dramatic seasonal illuminations and period decorations, traditional meals and snacks and gift ideas galore, there’s no better way to set the stage for the start of the Christmas season, and warm the festive cockles of your heart.

Tales of the Riverbank

Now here’s a great idea that’s been taken up by over 1,000 groups so far this year: take a broad-bottomed canoe for two or four, paddle off into the tran-quil Northamptonshire country-side in the vague direction of Pe-terborough, in search of peace and quiet and country pubs… and then call up those nice peo-ple at Canoe2, who will happily come and fetch you so you don’t have to paddle back!

Believe us, it’s the best option when you successfully locate an idyllic boozer late in the day; though it’s also perfectly okay to stay out overnight and go on an an extended expedition for as long as you like. The canoe-ing season ends around the end of October, but until then there’s the added attraction of a stopo-ver in a yurt by the river near Oundle, offered to Canoe2 cus-tomers in partnership with Nene Valley Boats. They’re beautifully decorated inside, fitted with a cosy woodburner for the cooler evenings, and suitable for up to six people.

Needless to say, proper training and all the equipment you’ll need – like lifejackets and watertight barrels for your gear – are all supplied. Prices from £30 per canoe.

On Saturday September 18, Athena in Leicester, played host to England Netball’s Goalden Globe Awards 2010.

Now in its sixth year, the event celebrates the countless volunteers who give up their time to support the sport of netball.

This year Califonia Prunes really put on a spectacular show, as we found out whan we arrived at this 1920’s themed evening. The award presentations were followed by an excellent three course meal and entertainment was left in the very capable hands of Strictly Come Dancing Latin Specialists, Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova.

Darren and Lilia put on a fabulous show and then filled the floor with a Salsa lesson, getting almost all the 300 guests on their feet.

Imli Lounge

ImLI LOunge76 Kingsley Park Terracenorthampton nn2 7HHTel: 01604 791555/791697www.imli-lounge.co.uk

It’s three years now since the Imli Lounge underwent a complete transformation, proudly opening for business with a newly warm and modern ambience, offering an new menu with a dash of fusion inspiration and origins right across the subcontinent.

For eight years, the reputation of the old Prince of Bengal had spread far and wide; but even-long-standing fans of Mr Choudhury’s warm hospitality – take us, for example! – were instantly won over by the atmosphere of the Imli, and the wide-ranging menu which of course still retained those classic signature dishes.

Mr Choudhury doesn’t need to think for too long before recommending his own personal favourite dish to us prevaricating guests in need of help: the Imli Chef’s Special (£10.95) is a tandoori-cooked explosion of rich meat including chicken tikka, lamb tikka and sheek kebab in a special sauce whose ingredients even we have never got to discover!

The range of tastes and origins here is simply stunning – from the south Indian thali to the north-western frontier’s balti, from exotic cuts of venison to the personally recommended batak tawa (duck cooked with ginger, tomato, onion and capsicum, £8.95) – and yet the ingredients are entirely consistent in their

quality and freshness. Taste the bay leaves, the cardamon, the fresh coriander: just as the menu notes, “Whilst the chilli heat equates to a medium strength, the flavours herein are gastronomically explosive!”

From poppadoms and pickles to the last hunk of tandoori nan and the final scoop of good old touk dali side-dish, the Imli rates close to perfect. Now to test out the special Sunday buffet, where £8.95 promises unlimited culinary pleasure

Congratulations to all five final-ists in the Pub or Bar Restau-rant of the Year category in this year’s Northants Food and Drink Awards. Now the proud propri-etors, talented chefs and staff, and of course the loyal custom-ers of the finalists face a nerv-ous wait as mystery diners and voters do their stuff, all building up to the announcement of re-sults in all seven categories at a special Awards Dinner at Hold-enby House on 6th October.

We’re pleased to note that four of the five finalists have already been brought to your attention in these pages – The Olde Red Lion, Kislingbury; The Saracen’s Head, Little Brington; The Red Lion, Sibbertoft, and The Tollemache Arms, Har-rington – so the very least the

WOW Food & Drink team can now do is share our insider tip for the pub that we reckon might be favourite to scoop the prestigious foodie award, hav-ing been runner-up last year.

Situated two miles from Althorp, the 17th-century Sara-cen’s Head in Little Brington is a textbook village pub, blending all the traditional elements any serious hostelry lover demands – real ale and exemplary wine list: check! Olde worlde beams, floorboards and flagstones, red

telephone box in the corner: check! – with the offering of first-rate food, accommodation and function facilities.

But it’s the food that brings us back here time after time, heightened by the ambience of the art gallery and library res-taurants. The lunchtime spe-cials (home-baked ham, egg and chips for little more than the price of snack food); the Sunday lunches (try the roast pork belly with peach and apri-cot stuffing, £9.95); chef Adam

Tindall’s ever-tempting pie of the day, or his fantastic roast venison, served with thyme po-lenta cake and gruyere cheese, drizzled with port.

And, oh gosh, here comes Christmas…

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

Modestly brilliant.

Light and nippy, the Mazda2 has everything you’d expect from a small car and more.

It does well for perform-ance, driveability, fuel economy and attractive pricing, but while ideal as a car for people without children – or as a second car to quickly ferry the kids to school - it is not really roomy enough as a main family car. I should know, I have two small children

and it was a squeeze, to say the least.

The car has been around for over a couple of years (it was voted World Car of the Year 2008) – but still looks fresh and is well laid out with good visibility. My test car, with a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, was perfect for in-town driving

and it coped with motorway journeys without any worries.

Toys like the remote audio controls and CD/MP3 player make the mini-Mazda fun to be in, but the interior plastics let it down. They look and feel cheap, but the upholstery is

decent and the seats are very comfortable. The driving po-sition is great, with plenty of seat adjustment to meet the needs of all drivers. Leg and head room is not bad either, but the minimum boot space is a modest 250 litres, not leaving

drive over anything other than a smooth road surface and the ride is harsh. The steering is light, so parking is easy and the brakes scrub off speed well. Add an average fuel consump-tion of 54.3mpg to all that and you have a car that is not just competent, but also cheap to run.

As I said earlier, this car has

much space for shopping bags once a pushchair is stuffed in there. This can be increased to a maximum of 787-litres with the rear seats folded, but that means leaving the kids behind – if you have them!

The suspension is firm, al-lowing you to take corners without much body roll, but been around for a little while

now, but if you want an even fresher looking little Mazda, then you won’t have long to wait. At this month’s Paris Mo-tor Show (2-17 October) the up-graded version of the Mazda2 will be unveiled. It will feature changes including: new front styling features, an upgraded interior, an improved Euro V

compliant powertrain, an up-dated chassis and an automatic transmission version.

Just for info, if you’re inter-ested, the upgraded Mazda2 will be joined in Paris by the all-new Mazda5. It will premier with a more economical 1.6 die-sel engine. WOW will be test driving the new Mazda5 soon - so watch this space!

‘Oomph’ Pa Pa

THE 2010 Lotus Elise has fun written all the way through it like a piece of rock. It’s a gorgeous little number, stripped right down - perfect as a weekend pleasure-machine or, if you’re not bothered about space or luxury, it’s an economical enough everyday car.

The third-generation 2010-spec Lotus Elise’s basic chas-sis, brakes and dimensions remain unchanged, but the styling is delicately tweaked

and the base model now has a 1.6-litre Toyota-sourced engine and a six-speed gearbox to re-place the outgoing 1.8 lump that mated up to a five-speed box.

The 1.6-litre engine has very comparable performance to the old, lower-power 1.8-litre; it has 9lb ft more torque, does the same top speed, but takes 0.4sec longer to get to 62mph. The fresh, ecologically aware engine and new gearbox also improves fuel economy from

37.2mpg to 45mpg, while C02 falls from 179 to 149g/km.

On the move, the Elise talks to the road – there is loads of feedback through the non-pow-er assisted steering and a rigid direct sense to everything. The seats are stiff yet comfortable, the throttle and brake pedals are easy to reach and the ride is bone-shakingly hard – but that’s what you want and ex-pect from a true sports car.

There’s plenty of ‘oomph’ from

the Lotus to give you an adrena-line rush, but it won’t ‘whale-tail’ all over the place without warn-ing, unless you’re driving insanely on a greasy road. The 6800rpm rev limit can feel a little miserly, but other than that, the Norfolk based sports car maker offers a revised Elise which will give you years of unadulterated driv-ing pleasure, along with a sense that you haven’t quite conformed to the ways of the world com-pletely.

Where to buy a rocket ship!

Never before has a WOW Motoring article attracted reader interest like Tim Barnes-Clay’s review of the jawdropping Mazda 3 MPS in last issue – presented under the eye-catching but entirely accurate headline of ‘Rocket Ship’! Online and walk-in feedback to the turbocharged 2.3-litre, 155mph projectile was so positive we decided this issue to follow up with a visit to the dream car’s local home base, at Northampton Mazda.

Right from the welcoming greeting from sales manager Chris Lovell, the friendly and personal service offered by this exclusive Mazda-only dealer-ship is apparent. As he intro-duces the wonderful Mazda 3 and its slick sibling Mazdas 2 and 6, Chris’s pride in the prod-uct beams through. In a series of joyful test-drives available to any guest at the dealership, that pride is readily explained – together with Mazda’s enticing ‘Dance with the Devil’ tagline. And it’s a pride that runs throughout Northampton Mazda.

Chris’s colleague John Stanley explains the attractions and

benefits of the 0% finance / 50% deposit-50% finance deals avail-able – and the generous PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) of-fers which can instantly wipe up to £1,250 off the price of a new Mazda. In the on-site workshop, after-sales expert Philip Lane is the man who guarantees your new Mazda remains in as-new condition for years to come. And finally, we’re greeted with a warm handshake from general manager Manjit Kang, whose role ensures no guest will leave this dealership with anything but a glowing impression…

And a guaranteed yearning to call one of these bright-red rocket ships their very own

Derek Hammond and family pay their respects at Geddington

ROyal Hunting lOdgelong since disappeared from the garden mound behind the church, the palatial wooden lodge was the haunt of kings throughout the Plantagenet and Medieval period, when councils, a parliament and and royal assemblies were held here.

No, no, no: we didn’t go and pay our respects to some long-forgotten unfortunate by the name of Eleanor Cross. We went and paid our respects at the Eleanor Cross, an ancient memorial which takes pride of place at the heart of the unspoilt village of Geddington, situated between Corby and Kettering.

A well-to-do little place built of warm honey stone, there are hours of fun to be had in the pub overlooking the cross, never mind clustering in one of the pedestrian retreats on the narrow medieval packhorse bridge over the Ise, watching cars splash by in the thrillingly lengthy ford below, and secretly hoping they get washed away downstream.

But first the little matter of Queen Eleanor’s Cross – though not before we’ve expended more time and energy musing over the mysterious little lock-up located beneath ground level at its side, which proved almost as attractive to the kids as clambering all over the village’s historic centrepiece.

And so to Queen Eleanor, who

departed this life near Lincoln, in the year of our Lord 1290. The Spanish princess was in her fiftieth year, having enjoyed the title of Queen Consort to King Edward I – her husband of 26 years – since 1279. The eldest of her 14 children was to become King Edward II.

Originally there were 12 of these lavishly decorated monuments erected by the King in the years following her death, each one marking a stopping place on the meandering route of the funeral procession from Lincoln to London. The most famous Eleanor Cross is Charing Cross in London, a replica for the original which once stood at the top of Whitehall, from which

all mileages from London were reckoned. Only three complete originals are left, one in Waltham Cross, Essex, and the other two in Northamptonshire – here in Geddington, and at Hardingstone, south of Northampton on the road out to the M1.

It’s worth dropping by to gaze up at the serene figures of Queen Eleanor, carved by Master Sculptor William of Ireland in order to preserve her memory. The Geddington cross is the finest of the three survivors, triangular in section with a wonderfully preserved hexagonal pinnacle over the canopied statues.

Seven hundred years melt away.
