Week 10 sees the end of a very productive term for the students of Woy Woy Public School. We’ve certainly managed to pack a lot into the past nineweeks, and in particular the last fortnight. Staff and students will be well and truly deserving of a break once the school holidays begin next week!

Excursions

Term 3 has always been an exciting one for the students of Woy Woy Public School, with a variety of high-quality camps, excursions and in-school eventsscheduled for students throughout the school. Last week our Year 6 students went to Canberra from Wednesday through to Friday. Preliminary reports fromMrs Hunt, Ms Hozack and Mr Brady have indicated that despite the cold, the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and demonstrated excellent behaviourat all times.

and all of the Kindergarten teachers for the great work they are doing with this initiative.

School Development Day

All permanent staff members attended the School Development Day on Monday 9th September. The keynote speaker, Professor Barry Carpenter, delivered apresentation entitled ‘Children with Complex Needs – The New Generation Challenge’. He outlined recent research on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder(FASD) and the implications for teaching children with Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD). It was a fascinating presentation andshould enable our teachers to more confidently plan personalised learning pathways and improve learning outcomes for students with CLDD.

Staffing

In Week 8’s edition of the Namalata, Ms Buckley advised readers of changes to staffing for Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of this term. More changes will be in effectat the beginning of Term 4. Ms Buckley and Mr Steller will return as Principal and Stage 1 Supervisor respectively, and I will resume my substantive role asStage 3 supervisor. In addition, Mr Andrew Kinniburgh, our Assistant Principal (Disabilities classes) has been seconded to work in the Assistant Principal(LAST Co-ordinator) position attached to Gosford Public School, for the first three weeks of next term. Ms Whatnall will continue as teacher of 2C for thefirst few weeks of Term 4. The school would also like to extend a vote of thanks to Mr Sam Burke and Mr Matthew Bradbury for completing their blocks on5/6B and 2S and Ms Katya Wengi and Mrs Wendy Paterson for their work with 3/4G and the Early Intervention classes respectively. We look forward toworking with both of them in the future and wish them well for the rest of the school year.

Sport

It’s been a busy few weeks in terms of sport here at WWPS as well. Jake Kay and Amara Pilsen bothrepresented the school and the Southern Central Coast zone at the Sydney North Carnival Athletics Carnival at Homebush on Monday 9th September.Congratulations Jake and Amara on making it all the way to the regional athletics carnival! Mr Graham’s Girls’ Soccer team made it through to the lastthirty-two teams in the state in the NSW PSSA knockout competition, but unfortunately lost 3-0 to Kariong Public School on Wednesday 11th September.Mr Graham reported that the girls played with passion and pride, and that he was very proud of their achievements.

Elective sports begin on the first Friday of Week 1 in Term 4. Mrs Taylor would like to remind everyone that payments are due before the end of this term.Any students who have yet to enrol in one of the many sports on offer should do so as soon as possible. Places remain for both AFL and ‘Power-walking’.

NAPLAN results

Last week the school received the following advice from ACARA (the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority), the body responsiblefor the development and delivery of the NAPLAN tests:

“On Thursday 5 September ACARA identified an error in the placement of the national average markers on the Years 5 and 7 NAPLAN Student Reports forLanguage Conventions. Importantly the NAPLAN student data is correct. ACARA made the immediate decision to halt any further packaging anddistribution of NAPLAN reports while options regarding the distribution of correct NAPLAN Student Reports were considered.

ACARA is working closely with Test Administration Authorities (TAAs) in every state and territory to ensure correct reports are distributed. This mattermay result in the delay of the distribution of student reports, possibly to the week of 13 October, however ACARA and TAAs will seek to minimise thedelay.”

ICAS Tests

The school has fielded a number of enquiries recently regarding the distribution of ICAS participation/results certificates. All certificates will be handed outat Wednesday morning line-up assemblies, as they arrive at the school. This Wednesday, ‘Writing’ and ‘Science’ certificates will be handed out to allstudents who participated in those tests.

Bus Passes

Busways have recently contacted the school to advise that some children who are currently in Year 2 and in possession of a 2013 bus pass, will be ineligiblefor free bus travel as Year 3 students in 2014. Parents/carers of these students will need to submit the relevant paperwork to the local depot in order toobtain a pass for next year. A letter will be send home to all Year 2 students who catch the bus to and from school, informing them of their eligibility statusand with clear instructions on how to proceed from there. Enquiries can be directed to the NSW Government’s Department of Transport and Infrastructure.

Online Payments

From the 14th October this year, it will be possible for parents to make online payments to the school, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. It willbe possible to make payments using either a Visa or MasterCard credit card, or a debit card. To ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in asecure manner, card/account details will not passed back to the school. Details of the payments themselves however, are passed daily to the school wherethey will be receipted against your child’s account. More details about this facility will be sent home closer to the system’s launch.

Happy holidays everyone!

Regards,

Mr Dan Betts

Australian Government Assistance for National Capital Excursion

During week 9 of this term, students from Year 6 went on an eductional tour of the National Capital. Whilst on this tour, they participated in a variety ofeducational programs focused on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics andcitizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government contributes funding of $20 per eligible studentunder the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program, toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution is paid directly to the schoolupon completion of the excursion. The rebate is factored in and deducted from the initial excursion costing, making the excursion more affordable. Wewould like to thank the Australian Government for it's support of this program. Acivities undertaken as part of the eduational tour included:

Guided tour of Parliament House, including a visit to the House of Reps and the SenateGuided tour of the Australian Institute of SportVisit to the Australian War Memorial, including the "Anzac Legacy" program Tour of the Royal Australian MintRole play of the election process at the Electoral Education CentreGuided tour of the Museum of Australian DemocracyTour of the National Dinosaur MuseumVisit to Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre

Rabbit Hutch Wanted

Our rabbit, 'Icing’ is going on a little holiday soon and we are looking for a portable rabbit hatch (big enough for him to live in for a while but not too bigthat we are unable to move it around).

If you have a spare hutch that you no longer require and you would be willing to donate it to the Preschool, we would be really appreciative. Please comeand see us if you can help out.

With thanks The Preschool Kids

Environmental Science GATS Day at BWSC

On Tuesday 10th September, 20 students from each of the primary schools in our learning community participated in a day of activities at BWSC UminaCampus science laboratories. Students learnt about flora and fauna found at Umina Campus and how volcanos are formed. Students made their own modeland completed an experiment that simulated a volcanic eruption. A fantastic day meeting new friends was had by all and learning about the Scienceprogram at Brisbane Water College excited our future high school students. After a delicious Subway lunch our visitors received certificates ofparticipation. Thank you to the year 9 Peer Mentors and Mr Brown for sharing their knowledge about Environmental Science. Thank you for yourenthusiasm students!

P & C News

P & C Membership

Membership renewals are due at our next meeting. This is a small cost of $1.

It is paramount that we have members to keep our P&C operating, otherwise it would fold, which in turn would see the closure of the uniform shop and ourcanteen.

This would be disastrous as the uniform shop would be outsourced and prices would increase significantly, as we keep all prices to a minimum with onlyadding between 50c - $2 on nearly all our items. The same would happen with the canteen.

You need to be a financial member to have the opportunity to vote at our AGM in November and this is when all positions are up for nominations.

PresidentVice PresidentSecretary TreasurerCanteen Co-Ordinator & TreasurerUniform Co-Ordinator & TreasurerFundraising Co-Ordinator

If you are interested in any of these positions and have any questions please come see me, I am always in the CA Room on Mondays from 9.00-9.30amafter the uniform shop closes or why not come along to our next meeting?

The P&C Association at our school can only operate if we have people that are willing to give a little of their time. Please consider joining as our mainfocus is raising funds for our school that not only benefit the school but our children also.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop is open on the following days:

Monday 8.30am – 9.00amThursday 8.30am – 9.00am

Please note: There are order forms available at our school office, you can leave orders and payment in an envelope at the office and these will be completedand delivered to your child’s class. Hats are also available from the canteen every day. Payment is by cash or cheque only. If you have any unwanteduniform, that you are willing to donate please leave in the CA Room, these are sold for $5.

Our next meeting

Thursday 17th October – 9.30am in the CA Room
