ACTIVITIES IN FALL 2014 SEMESTER – within OIKONET Elective

OIKONET - Threshold Matters Update 2.0

Threshold Matters Workspace is a learning space with-

in the OIKONET research project. Students are design-

erly researching the relation between the domain of the

dwelling and the domain of the public. After working

on several tasks during this firs t hal f of the semester,

the insight of the concept of threshold is coming to a

fin

a

l output. Students have made some great exam-

ples of urban tomographies and are using those now

as a design tool. These new tomographies are worth

exploring in a next phase.

Students comment on the

#Threshold Matters task:

“Good day. I like your last sen-

tence “In a city both private and

public spaces are important in-

gredients”, because I think build-

ings should be linked with public

spaces. Nevertheless, you asked

if we can use “good memories” as

a designing tool; but I think the

“urban memories” or “collective

memories” are a better tool, be-

cause the users could be tied with

the place and they could make a

stronger sense of belonging; for

that reason, they will take care of

it even more.”

Students comment on the Archi-

tectural Review:

Hello, I like the idea of this build-

ing, Bigyard Townhouse, by

Zanderrotharchitekten. It applies

to different concepts of thresh-

old. Sense of belonging, hierarchy,

private and public spaces can be

implemented, specially the idea

of private and public seems to get

another conception. I think that

in some places it couldn’t be done

in practice but I also think it is a

good prototype for seeing things

in a different way. What do you

think of the Nemausus of Jean

Nouvel?

Through a series of sections on

the site that address and high-

light the Threshold Matter con-

cepts an Urban Tomography is

created.

The (dis)continuity between the

ground/wall/canopy elements

will be explored in this Thresh-

old in Parallel studio relating

these with the feelings of cold/

soaked/dirty/thirsty/tired.

(2)

The purpose for the students

from ESTAV was to select an up-

loaded work from KUL students

and give a constructive Com-

ment or question on it.

(4)

Students will Design a space

that embodies their thoughts

and understanding of Threshold

Matters, using sections that re-

lates to the completed research

track.

understanding in the previous

learning activities, to elaborate

their knowledge and insights of

OIKONET - Threshold Matters Update

Threshold Matters Workspace is a learning space with-

in the OIKONET research project. Students are design-

erly researching the relation between the domain of the

dwelling and the domain of the public. So far, students

from KUL, GYTE and ESTAV worked on several tasks

related to this subject. Currently they are exploring dif-

ferent possibilit ies and prospects of urban tomogr aphy.

To be continued.

Students comment on the Oiko-

domos Workspace:

“The research about the different

living typlogies is clear, it let me

understand the buildings bet-

ter. The description explains the

drawings very well. The only thing

I was wondering, is how common

spaces worked in the past, for ex-

ample: how was common space

organised during the the middle

ages or during acient greece? It

would also be interesting to ex-

plain how common space is de-

signed in your country compared

with the contemporary buildings.”

THRESHOLD

New York, 1967

The idea of thresholds is about mediating

movement from one type of spatial

status to another. A transition space

designed between two adjacent spaces

that otherwise couldn’t connect. Some

thresholds become so extended that they

become intermediary spaces in their own

right.

Paley Park is often cited as one of the

fin

e

st ur ban spaces in the U .S.

The threshold is designed in such a way to

draw people in, but it still manages to keep

the busy street out. They bring elements

of the park in to the transition zone, (01)

like a change in pavement and some trees.

The entrance is wide, narrows and gets

wide again as to clearly defin

e

the space

inside the park (02). The change in level

brings a more intimate space to light that

belongs to the people who are inside. The

steps are intentionally kept low so the

threshold for entering stays minimal.

SENSE OF BELONGING / SPATIAL HIERARCHY PRIVATE PUBLIC

Berlin, 2007-2010

“The advantages of one’s “own home”

while retaining the density of a resident ial

estate add signific

a

nce to the aspect of

community.” - Zanderrotharchitekten

The hierarchy of spaces is important to

achieve a private -, a communal - and a

public sense of belonging. This project

is a good example how architecture can

support this idea.

(01) The hierarchy of spaces is important,

to achieve a private -, a communal - and a

public sense of belonging. (Sect ion)

(02) Each appartement can be adapted by

the user: private sense of belonging

(03) The collective garden but also the

rooftop terrace, the summer kitchen, the

sauna and the visitors’ appartments gives

the people a communal sense of belonging.

(04) Each appartement have a terace

to look over the city: public sense of

belonging

eral concepts linked to #Thresh-

oldMatters, through a 140 char-

acter message. This icon was

(1)

The goal of Visual Impulses was

to clarify the concepts that make

reference to the phenomena of

“Threshold” in the urban context.

(2)

The purpose was to select a work

on the OIKODOMOS platform

and write a short constructive

comment on it.

(4)

The aim was to create an Ar-

chitectural Review of a design,

proposed in the OIKODOMOS

Case Repository, that relates to

the discussed concepts about

Threshold Matters.

LA 56: Explorations upon con-

cepts of Threshold Matters

The output of exploring the con-

cepts that relate to Threshold

Matters is briefly represented

here. Soft edges, heterogeneity,

liveliness, affordances, collective

and dual space are some of the

concepts that have been inves-

tigated.

LA 57: Urban CT Scanning / Ur-

ban Tomography

Through the production of a se-

ries of sections and other draw-

ings, students aim to understand

the Threshold Matters. They

will map the characteristics of

the site and strive for common

ground between the concern

of private space and the public.

The drawings should enable stu-

dents to designer ly take a stance

on the current issue of public vs.

private and how architecture fa-

cilitates the movement from one

sphere to another.
