Garett, Grammar School, St. Albans [to John Watkins Jones] requesting particulars for the headmastership of the Free Grammar School, Beaumaris [Anglesey]. Attached: LETTER (29 October 1864): Rev. H. Garrett to the trustees offering himself as candidate for the position and giving details of his previous experience.

WQSA/CHA/2/63 [c.1868] LETTERS (2): S. B. James, Wakefield, Windsor to John Watkins Jones and the trustees of the Free Grammar School, Beaumaris [Anglesey]. He asks Mr. Jones to lay before the trustees a copy of the book: ‘Church and Society,’ the appendix of which relates to grammar school education. In his letter to the trustees he mentions the same book and asks them to accept it, but he would like his testimonials returned. He also adds that he would not be satisfied if confined to the old routine of Latin and Greek.

WQSA/CHA/2/86 1850 Jan. 14 LETTER: D. Lewis Williams, Newborough, [Anglesey] to J[ohn] Jones, Beaumaris [Anglesey] telling him that he has been expecting to see a notice in the papers respecting the headmastership of Beaumaris, and having seen none he thought it best to write and enquire.

WQSA/CHA/2/87 1850 Jan. 14 – 1850 Apr. 1

LETTERS (5): Rev G. C. Swanyne, 8 Berkeley Sq., Bristol to J[ohn] Jones, asking for information about the David Hughes Free Grammar School. He is very anxious to learn about the amount paid by the pupils in order to provide for proper assistants. He adds that if the boys only pay a small amount the school will not be able to take a high place. He finds it hard to make up his mind whether to apply, but he has had his testimonials printed. In his last letter he expresses his wish to be at Beaumaris on the day of the election and will be ready to start for Beaumaris at a moment’s notice.

WQSA/CHA/2/88 1850 Jan. 15 LETTER: R. Williams Bulkeley to J[ohn] Jones telling him that he has submitted the advertisement for the headmastership at the Free Grammar School, Beaumaris [Anglesey] to the Bishop [?of Bangor] and has recommended 20 March [1850] as the closing date for applications. He adds that the election should take place during Easter.

WQSA/CHA/2/94 1850 Jan. 31 LETTER: Rev. T. H. Buck, Tiverton, Devon to the feoffees of the David Hughes Free Grammar School, Beaumaris [Anglesey] enquiring about the vacancy for the post of master. He asks whether the headmaster is required to be an Oxford man and whether he is permitted to take boarders.

BUNDLE (19) of papers consisting mainly of correspondence between R. H. Hill, Cowbridge, Glamorgan and J[ohn] Jones, concerning the David Hughes Free Grammar School, Beaumaris, Anglesey. The bundle includes a list of fixtures at the schoolhouse; a letter of application for the post of headmaster; and letter of acceptance by Hill. Further letters include a request for a transcription of the original deeds; the names of boys attending the school; the armorial bearings of the founder and the arms borne by the town. These papers also deal with the bad state of repair of the schoolhouse and a request for the schoolhouse to be painted. The bundle also includes replies from John Jones.
