WRAPPING + STERILIZING AN IUD INSERTION PACK

This guide provides instructions (including visuals) on how to wrap and sterilize an IUD insertion pack. Gather all items before attempting to wrap pack:

� 1 metal sound � 1 tenaculum � 1 medium graves speculum � 1 ring forcep (Foerster Sponge) � 1 curved scissors* � metal bowl with 3 cotton balls** � 3 4x4 gauze � 1 marker � Autoclave wrapping paper � autoclave sterilization indicator strip + tape

Placement of instruments:

1. Lay 2 sheets of autoclave paper out so that the corners of the paper are on the top and bottom of your work surface. 🔷

2. Tape a sterilization indicator strip near the middle of the pack.

a. Strip should be visible upon opening the pack; do not cover the strip with other instruments.

3. Place 3 pieces of 4x4 gauze in the middle of the pack.

4. Place the cotton ball bowl on top of the gauze. • Don’t place instruments or gauze on top of the cotton ball bowl as we will

need to put a disinfecting agent on the cotton balls during set-up. You will not be able to touch anything inside the pack during setup, unless you take the time to put on sterile gloves).

5. Place the tenaculum, ring forceps, scissors, and metal sound together on the side of the bowl closest to you

• Keep instruments unhinged; do not keep the instruments locked during the autoclave process

6. Place the speculum so it curves around the bowl and sits comfortably with the other instruments.

Wrapping the pack:

7. To wrap the pack, take the corner closest to you and fold it up to the top corner to make a triangular shape, covering the instruments. Tuck a portion of the wrap under the instruments, but leave the corner available to pull on when being unwrapped.

8. Fold the right and left corners in and double back on the edges to make easy corners to grasp and pull on when opening the pack. The pack should now start to resemble an open envelope.

9. Fold the top corner towards you, and tuck a portion of the top

corner in, under the right and left folds. This will leave a small corner that can be used as a tab for opening the pack.

10. Place sterilization indicator tape on the pack to secure it.

11. Label the pack with your marker: a. write your initials b. what the pack is for (“IUD Pack”)

c. the date you wrapped the pack d. the expiration date of the pack

12. Place pack in autoclave for sterilization and run appropriate cycle.
