Mother of learning, we pledge to thee

All our love and loyalty.

Anderson School District One Rules and Regulations

ATTENDANCE POLICY

To maintain full-time status at Wren High School or the Career and Technology Center,

students must be enrolled and attend school regularly. Students will earn a Carnegie unit for

a course upon earning a final grade of 60 or better. Students may need to attend after-school

tutoring or complete assignments after school hours in order to demonstrate proficiency in a

course, especially if a student is absent. No additional requirements are needed beyond the

state minimum for awarding a Carnegie unit. A Perfect Attendance award will be given to

students with no tardies or absences to any period of any class during the day. *Absences

fall into two categories: Lawful and Unlawful.*

LAWFUL ABSENCES

1. Illness - Illness that is certified by a doctor's statement is a lawful or excused

absence. We encourage the scheduling of such appointments, when possible, at

times that would not interfere with school. Medical statements should be presented

within 5 days following the student’s return to school. AN ILLNESS NOT

ACCOMPANIED BY A DOCTOR'S STATEMENT WILL BE AN UNLAWFUL OR

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE. *Doctor's excuses and other documentation that would

justify lawful absences to school will not be accepted beyond the last day of student

attendance.

2. Illness Or Death In The Family - When there has been a serious illness or death in the

student's immediate family and the student has been absent as a result of either of

these, then the absence(s) will be excused or lawful. The principal may require

evidence in addition to a parent/guardian statement. A statement from the

parent/guardian must be presented within 3 days following the student's return to

school. The excuse must list the date of absence, the reason for the absence, and

must be signed by the parent/guardian and dated on the day the student returns to

school.

3. School Function or Activities - Student absences for activities that are school-

related will be excused or lawful.

1. Religious Holidays of Their Faith - Students may be excused for religious holidays of

their faith when these holidays fall on a school day(s). The principal may require

evidence in addition to a statement from a parent/guardian.

1. Principal’s Approval - In addition to the above four specific types, the principal of

each school has the discretion of deciding if an absence is lawful or unlawful. If the

Page 17: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

17

principal feels the absence is due to an emergency situation which was beyond the

student's control, then the principal may excuse the absence.

UNLAWUL ABSENCES

1. Students who are willfully absent from school without knowledge of their

parents.

2. Students who are absent from school without acceptable cause with the

knowledge of their parents. 3. Students who are absent from school due to suspensions. 4. Absences for which a student fails to provide to the school a valid excuse within

the acceptable time frame. This could include absence(s) for medical reasons if not

accompanied by a doctor's statement. It could also include absence(s) for religious holidays

unless adequately documented as determined by the proper school official. If an excuse is

not returned within the proper time frame, the absence becomes unexcused.

CONSEQUENCES FOR UNLAWFUL ABSENCES

Attendance Intervention Plans - The law requires school districts to develop an

intervention plan after a certain number of unlawful absences. This plan requires

contacting the parents to determine the cause(s) of the absences and developing a plan

for improved attendance. Anderson District One's policy calls for three letters to be sent

to parents after the third, fifth, and ninth unlawful absence. After the third unlawful

absence, students will be referred to the county attendance officer.

Credit Denial –Credit will be denied for students who accumulate more than 6 unexcused absences in a yearlong course, 3 in a semester course, and/or 12 in a Freshman Academy course. The student will receive a grade of 51 (F). Please note that this applies to each class individually; therefore, missing only part of a day is preferable to missing an entire day. *In some cases where 8th grade students are taking courses for high school credit, this rule would apply.

Seat Time Recovery – Seat Time Recovery is offered during the school year for students who are in danger of failing a course because of absences. The cost is $5 per class. (For example, if a student needs to make up 1 absence for an English class and 2 absences for service learning, he would pay $15.) Seat Time Recovery is a privilege that may be eliminated at any time by the administration. Seat Time Recovery cannot replace the important instructional program students receive in their classes; therefore, students are encouraged to attend class regularly. Dates and procedures are available via the website and/or Mrs. Tinsley.

Athletics and Extra-curricular Activities - Student attendance in the regular school

program is of first importance. No student may be permitted to take part in athletics or

Page 18: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

18

other extra-curricular activities on a day when he/she has been absent from school for

the entire day or part of the day. It would be only in justifiable instances that the

administration may grant an exception to this policy.

TARDY TO SCHOOL/CLASS:

Students are considered tardy unless they are inside the classroom before the tardy bell

rings. Classroom teachers should contact the Attendance Office regarding students who

are marked absent but were present in class. Students are given three (3) tardies per

semester to be used for uncontrollable events such as a car breaking down or

oversleeping, etc. Therefore, students should not use these tardies frivolously. Any

student arriving to school after the 8:00 tardy bell is considered tardy.

*Failure to follow the appropriate procedure will result in disciplinary action.

Tardy because of conference with teacher or guidance – Students who are tardy because

they were with another teacher or staff member must present a signed pass with the date

and time from that particular staff member. Students should not be admitted to class without

a pass from a faculty member or the guidance office. Tardies to class are excused only when a

pass is issued by school personnel stating the reason for the tardy.

Tardy because of doctor’s appointment - Tardies are excused when the student has an

appointment with a doctor or some other professional agency. A doctor's note must

accompany the tardy student in order for the tardy to be excused. A parent note will not

excuse a student's tardy.

Tardy because of late bus arrival - Report directly to the Attendance Office. The time/date on

the bus tardy will indicate whether the student has been loitering after the arrival of the bus.

Tardy other than late bus arrival - Report directly to the Attendance Office.

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURE:

Students are permitted to leave school before their regular dismissal only at the written

request of a parent or guardian, or for some urgent reason of which the administrator shall

be the judge. Once a student drives on campus, he/she is required to sign out in the

Attendance Office prior to leaving. A student must have a dismissal slip to leave the school

building at all times. Emergency dismissals must be obtained through Mrs. Tinsley. A student who leaves school with proper permission must have administrative approval to

return in the same day.

Students bringing a written request for dismissal must present it to Mrs. Tinsley when they

arrive at school. Written requests must be received before 8:30 A.M. to be approved.

In all cases, students are officially dismissed only when they sign out in the attendance

office. Students must report to the Attendance Office to sign in when returning to

school.

If given permission to leave campus, students must sign in at the Attendance Office at both

Wren High School and the CTC. If a student reports to the CTC and fails to report to Wren

High School or reports to Wren High School and fails to report to the CTC without properly

signing out, he/she will be considered cutting and will receive consequences according to

the discipline code.

Each request for a dismissal must contain the following information: - name of student as it appears on permanent record - the date

- the time to be dismissed

- reason for dismissal - signature of parent or guardian - telephone number where parent/guardian can be contacted.

No student shall be dismissed from 11:23 A.M. to 1:30 P.M. for lunch. Only in

emergency situations shall a student be given administrative permission to leave school

and return during lunch.

Dismissals from school for reasons other than approved appointments or verified illness will

result in an unexcused absence for all classes that are missed.

Seniors who have early dismissal from study hall in the middle of the day and fail to return for

their final class are considered cutting unless a parent has called to sign them out.

Illness at school: Students who become ill must report to the attendance clerk and

arrangements will be made for dismissal. Students who fail to report to class or the office

because of illness will be subject to disciplinary action for cutting class. See section on

Dispensing of medicine to students by school personnel for more information.

Hall Pass: Except during class change, no student is to be in the hall without a hall pass issued

by the teacher. The hall pass should have the student's name, destination, time left, and

Page 20: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

20

reason. No student is to be sent anywhere except to the library on a library pass. No student

should be dismissed from class at any time to use the pay phone or to purchase food from the

cafeteria or vending machines.

Restroom Policy: Each student will receive 2 restroom passes per nine weeks in each class, and the following conditions must apply:

The student will use the closest restroom possible and go only to the restroom;

The student must go and return as quickly as possible;

No student may leave while taking a test or quiz;

Going to the restroom must be done in a quiet manner where no class disruption takes

place;

Only one student at a time from a single class may use the restroom.

After the student has used his/her 2 free passes, teachers may assign make-up time. This

time does not have to equal to the time used. Teachers will issue 5 to 10 minutes to be

served after school, before school, or at lunch. The time must be made up before the next

class period unless the student has reached an agreement with the teacher. This agreement

must be made before the next class. Failure to serve will result in an hour detention or ISS.

If any student has a medical condition that causes him/her to need more restroom time,

he/she may bring a doctor’s note to the administration, and the student’s teachers will be

notified to allow the exception. The doctor’s note must state how long this exemption will be

needed.

This policy is designed to make all classrooms uniform throughout the school. However, students must follow the teacher’s standards and cooperate to make this policy work smoothly. Teachers have discretion beyond the minimum policy. If the above standards are not followed, the student is subject to ISS and loss of this privilege. Make-Up Work: The following rules will apply to all students who need to make up work:

Students who are absent one day (lawful or unlawful) should be prepared to fulfill any

previously assigned work on the day they return to class. In addition, upon their return to

school, students should contact the teachers of the classes they missed to get missed

assignments so they will be prepared for the next day's classes.

Students who are absent for a portion of the school day should be prepared to fulfill any

previously announced assignments the day they return to class.

Students participating in school activities (field trips, academic or athletic competition, etc.)

are responsible for any work missed while they were away from school. Any assignments

must be taken care of by the student the next day the student is in class.

Students who have longer-term absences (more than one day) will be allowed the same

number of days missed to complete any make-up assignments (i.e. 3 days absent - 3 days to

make up work). Any period of absences that would go beyond five consecutive days, the

teacher's discretion should be used to set up a schedule for making up missed work.

Page 21: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

21

It is always the student's responsibility to get his/her missed work made up. No make-up work

can be completed after the end of the appropriate nine-week period without teacher and

principal approval.

Students who are absent three days or more may request assistance in obtaining class

assignments through the Guidance Office. Requests should be made by 8:00 a.m. in order

for teachers to prepare the assignments and return them to Mrs. Tinsley in the Main Office

by the end of the school day.

Dispensing of Medicine: Generally, school staff members are to refrain from giving medicine

to children. However, the board recognizes the occasional need for district employees to

administer medicine to individual students. The guidelines are as follows:

● Students should refrain from taking any medication (prescription or over- the-

counter) at school for any reason unless dispensed according to the guidelines.

● The school district/principal reserves the right to deny a parent's request for

their child's participation under this policy for legitimate reasons.

● Parents may not hold the school, school district, or personnel liable for any adverse

reaction to a drug when it has been administered under the prescribed manner.

● A student who provides or takes any medication not dispensed in the manner

below will be subject to disciplinary action.

● The medication containers shall be properly labeled with student's name, name of

medication, dosage, how medication is to be administered, and the physician's

name.

● No district employee shall furnish any medication to be taken internally.

● Prior to the administering prescribed medication, a signed and dated request form

from the parent or legal guardian giving permission for the medicine to be

administered must be on file and placed in the pupil's permanent folder. Forms may

be obtained from the school office.

● A statement from the physician who prescribed the medicine must be on file. This

statement should contain the name of the medicine(s), the dosage, and the time(s)

to be given. The physician should sign and date the statement. Forms may be

obtained from the school office.

● Upon receipt of both of the statements, school personnel shall give the

medication in the manner prescribed. The principal or his designee shall be

responsible for administering the medicine

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES After teachers have exhausted all other appropriate preventive and corrective measures, referral of a student to the administration is used as a last resort. Once a student reaches the administrator's office, the seriousness of the case will speak for itself. The case will be dealt with as rapidly, firmly, and as fairly as possible. In most instances, parents will be contacted.

Page 22: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

When a student is suspended, the parents are required to contact the administrator as soon as possible in order to establish an appointment for a conference. After the student and his/her parents have had a conference with the administrator, the pupil may be readmitted to school. It is understood that during an out-of-school suspension, the student may not attend classes, participate in school activities, or visit the school grounds.

ANDERSON SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE DIGITAL INITIATIVE:

Gang-Related Activity: Gang-related activity of any kind is strictly prohibited. This is to include hand gestures, hand signs, clothing, language, drawings, and any other action deemed to be affiliated with a gang. Students participating in this type of activity will receive In-School Suspension or Out of School Suspension based on the severity of the situation. Disciplinary action will be determined by administration. School Safety: In order to maintain a safe school atmosphere, Wren High School will utilize many techniques. The cooperation of every student and faculty member is essential to the safety of the school. Please report any unsafe or potentially unsafe situation immediately to administration and/or the School Resource Officer. A reward will be offered to any student who provides information to the administration and/or Resource Officer that leads to the arrest of persons who are involved in illegal or dangerous activities on campus. Threats: Threats made against the school or school group(s), either implied or specific, in person or through electronic or other forms of communication, that have the effect or potential effect to disrupt the orderly operation of the school will be considered a Level 2 offense. Punishment: Up to and including recommendation for expulsion Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation: By action of Anderson School District One Board of Trustees, bullying by students, staff, and/or third parties that interfere with or disrupt a student’s ability to learn and/or the safe and orderly environment whether in a classroom, on school premises, on a school bus or other school-related vehicle, at an official school bus stop, at a school-sponsored activity or event whether or not it is held on school premises, or at another school program or function where the school is responsible for the student. For purposes of this policy (JICFAA), bullying or cyber bullying is defined as a gesture, electronic communication, or a written, verbal, physical or sexual act reasonably perceived to have the effect of the following: Harming a student physically or emotionally or damaging a student’s property, or placing

a student in a reasonable fear of personal harm or property damage; insulting or

demeaning a student or group of students causing substantial disruption in, or substantial

interference with, the orderly operation of the school; or posing a threat or interfering

with or disrupting the work and discipline of the school through the inappropriate use of

the Internet or web-based resources and/or social networking via the Internet,

telephones, or personal data assistants. Posting remarks on social media that result in a

disturbance to the school is subject to disciplinary action.

Any student who feels he/she has been subjected to bullying, cyber bullying, harassment, and/or intimidation is encouraged to report it to a school employee. Complaints will be investigated promptly, thoroughly, and confidentially. Retaliation or reprisal in any form against a student or employee who has filed a complaint or report of harassment, intimidation, or bullying is prohibited. Sexual Harassment: By action of Anderson School District One Board of Trustees, sexual harassment by students or employees toward other students or other employees is prohibited. All persons must avoid any action or conduct which could be viewed as sexual

harassment. Sexual harassment may result in ISS or OSS. Any student who feels he or she has been subjected to sexual harassment may file a complaint with the principal, guidance counselor, or associate superintendent for administration at the district office. Policies BGAA & JC (A) Electronic Devices: Wren High School is in full support of the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. Per Board Policy, students are allowed to bring electronic devices to school, but they must be turned off (not just silenced) during school hours, 8:00-3:10 pm. Teachers, however, may give students permission to use electronic devices during class time for instructional purposes. This rule applies to cell phones and iPods. Students will be directed by individual teachers based on classroom rules. Students are allowed to use iPads before school, throughout the school day, and after school. iPad use may be revoke based on students’ failure to abide by rules and/or follow the directions of school personnel. Students should follow the guidelines of the classroom rules as set forth by the classroom teacher. Students are allowed to wear earbuds; headphones (i.e. Beats) are not allowed. Consequences for failure to follow the above rules include loss of privileges, confiscation of the device, call home to parent, and/or disciplinary referral.

Use of Social Media: In Grutzmacher v. Howard County, 851 F.3d 332 (4th Cir. 2017) the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals addressed the use of social media noting in a footnote as follows: We observe that the act of “liking” a Facebook post makes the post attributable to the “liker,” even if he or she did not author the original post. See Bland v. Roberts, 730 F.3d 368, 386 (4th Cir. 2013), as amended (Sept. 23, 2013) (“[C]licking on the ‘like’ button literally causes to be published the statement that the User ‘likes’ something, which is itself a substantive statement. . . .That a user may use a single mouse click to produce that message . . . instead of typing the same message with several individual key strokes is of no constitutional significance.”). Accordingly, for ease of reference, we refer to Plaintiff’s various Facebook posts, comment replies, and “likes,” collectively, as Plaintiff’s “Facebook activity” or “speech.” Cell Phone/Paging Device Policy: CELL PHONE/IPAD USE Cell phones are to remain off and put away. In addition, iPads will be used for instructional use only. There may be times when an iPad is not appropriate in the instructional plans. In that case, iPads should be put away if a teacher directs students to do so. Board Policy JICJ: Cellular phone and paging device ownership by adolescents has proliferated over the past years. These devices are used for various reasons, including emergency use and parental communication. To reflect the societal trend and changing state law, the district will allow the possession of paging devices, including cellular telephones, by students only under the following circumstances.

Page 26: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

For purposes of this policy, paging devices are defined as any telecommunications device (including cellular telephones, pagers, etc.) that emits an audible signal, vibrates, displays a message or otherwise summons or delivers a communication to the possessor.

Operating (i.e. turned “on”) cell phones or paging devices are not allowed and cannot be used or visible during the regular academic day (from 8:00 a.m. to schools assigned dismissal time). Students are to store paging devices out of sight, in pockets, backpacks, lockers, cars, etc.

Operating (i.e. turned “on”) cell phones or paging devices are not allowed en route to and from school on school buses. Students are to store cell phones or paging devices, out of sight, in pockets, bags, backpacks, etc., while on school buses.

Operating (i.e. turned “on”) cell phones or paging devices are allowed during the school day with permission and under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher for educational purposes. Operating (i.e. turned “on”) cell phones or paging devices are allowed in school buildings after the regular school day has ended.

These devices will never be on, used or visible in any area where students or staff have an expectation of privacy including, but not limited to, health rooms, restrooms, locker rooms, dressing rooms, school offices or in any other areas of any school where use is not expressly authorized.

These devices will not be used to access, view, download, upload, share, transmit or receive any obscene, threatening, harassing or other inappropriate material via the internet, electronic mail, text or instant messages or other forms of electronic communication. Students are prohibited from using these devices for any activity prohibited by the district’s code of conduct; to circumvent district network security and internet blocks or filters; to access or view internet sites that are otherwise blocked from student access at school; or for any unauthorized access to or inappropriate use of the district’s computer network. The district will monitor student access to the district network and any online activities conducted on its property.

The school principal reserves the right to further limit and/or confiscate these devices if the use of these devices is causing a disruption to the school. The district will make an exception to these rules when the student needs the paging device at school for a legitimate, documented medical reason. However, before a student may have a paging device at school, the principal must have written, approved evidence on file of the student’s medical need for the device. The principal of each school will decide what constitutes a legitimate medical reason consistent with any guidelines established by the board and/or by the state department of education. A student who is 18 years old and wishes to participate as a member of a volunteer firefighting organization or emergency service organization may be authorized to carry a paging device with special permission from the school principal. If permission is granted for this purpose, the student must file with the principal a letter of special request from the volunteer organization of which he/she is a member and special arrangements must be made

Page 27: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

● First offense - Student warning; parent conference with administrator; device returned at conference.

● Second offense - One day of in-school suspension or assigned detentions; parent

conference with administrator; device returned at conference.

● Third offense - One day of out-of-school suspension; parent conference with administrator; device returned at conference; the student is prohibited from possessing or using any cell phone or paging device at school or on school district property for the remainder of the year.

● Fourth offense - Three days of out-of-school suspension and retention of the cell

phone or paging device until the end of the school year. Note: Although the district will take appropriate steps to safeguard all cellular telephones and paging devices that are confiscated, the district will not be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged devices.

Students are subject to both the code of conduct under board policy JICDA/JICDA-R and the following bus discipline code: Riding a school bus is a privilege. The board expects students to conduct themselves on school buses in a manner consistent with the district's student code of conduct. All bus riders must cooperate fully with their bus drivers and conduct themselves properly at all times. Bus drivers have the responsibility for supervision of students on the bus. Bus drivers will report to school principals or their designees the name of any student whose conduct interferes with safe driving or who acts disruptively. The principal or his/her designee has the responsibility of investigating reported incidents of student misconduct on buses, and as authorized by state law and regulation and district policy, the responsibility of suspending or denying bus transportation to a student whose conduct is persistently or flagrantly detrimental to safety and/or order on buses.

Out-of-School Suspension (O.S.S.): Suspension from school for a specific number of days up to ten for any one offense means the student may not attend classes or any other school functions, ride a school bus, or enter school grounds except for a prearranged conference with a school administrator. When a student is suspended from a class or the school, immediate contact will be made with the parents if at all possible. The administrator shall notify, in writing, the parent or legal guardian giving the reason for such suspension and setting the time and place when the administrator shall be available for a conference with the parent or guardian. The conference shall be held within three school days of the date of suspension. For students who are suspended out of school, it is the responsibility of the student to obtain all work missed in class. It is suggested that classmates be contacted for assignments and work given in class. On return to school the student should immediately see his/her teachers to get missed assignments. Students may make up all major work including tests and major writing assignments. Students may not make up daily work such as quizzes or homework. Students will receive a grade of zero for these assignments.

Information about a student may also be requested by military recruiters.

If a parent does not object to the release of this information, he/she does NOT need to notify

Page 43: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

the school. If, however, a parent does not want his/her child’s directory information released, the parent must complete the Release of Directory Information form available at the child’s school or via the district website. Forms must be submitted within 15 days of attendance, or the school will be free to release or use information concerning the student as appropriate. You may change your mind and revoke this authorization at any time (except when action has already been taken) by filling out another form and returning it to your child’s principal. Anderson School District One Notification of Rights under FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. “Student records“ include any records maintained by the district that are directly related to the student.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he/she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond high school (eligible student). These rights are as follows:

The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the district receives a request for access: Parents or eligible students should write to the school principal. In that letter, they should identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The principal will make the arrangements for them to have access to those records. He/She will notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where they may inspect those records. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for furnishing the copies.)

The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or

eligible student believes is inaccurate or misleading: Parents or eligible students may ask

Anderson School District One to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading.

The parents or eligible students should write the school principal. In that letter, they should

clearly identify the part of the record they want changed and specify why it is inaccurate or

misleading. If the district decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or

eligible student, the district will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise

them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. The district will provide

additional information regarding the hearing procedures when they notify the parent or

eligible student of the decision. After the hearing, if the district still decides not to amend the

record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record

setting forth his/her view about the contested information.

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the

student’s education rights, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without

consent: For instance, FERPA allows the district to disclose to school officials with legitimate

educational interest without consent. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if

the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional

responsibility. Upon request and without consent, the district discloses education records to

Cafeteria: The cafeteria uses the Horizon System to manage each student’s account. Students

are issued a PIN number that they will use to access their account. Students should keep this

number confidential at all times. Students have the option of utilizing this system as a

“declining balance” account. Parents may send money to be deposited into the student’s

account on an as-needed basis. Cash or checks should be given to the cafeteria manager

when students arrive in the morning. As students purchase food products, their individual

account is debited. Students and parents may check their remaining balance in the account at

any time. Students also have the option of purchasing food on a cash basis as well.

Lunch Procedures:

● Lunches may be paid for at the end of the proper serving line. Students are to form

lines in the cafeteria as directed by those supervising the lunchroom. Free lunch

applications must be returned to the front office as quickly as possible.

● Line up quickly but do not cut in line.

● All lunches must be eaten in the cafeteria. No exceptions!

● After eating, clean the immediate area and dispose of all trash in the appropriate

containers. Leaving trash on a table after eating will result in disciplinary action.

● Breakfast is served from 7:25-7:50 A.M.

● Throwing food or objects will result in disciplinary action.

● Stealing food or other items from the cafeteria is unacceptable. Students who steal will repay the cafeteria for items stolen and will be dealt with according to the discipline code and law enforcement.

● Free lunch applications: All forms must be returned to the front office as quickly as possible.

Inclement Weather Procedures: During the winter months, we are occasionally faced with inclement weather. Once students are approved to arrive late, they should arrive no more than ten minutes prior to their second period. They should not be in the hallways until the bell rings. Once they are approved to dismiss early, they should leave the building immediately after their fifth/sixth period class. Students must have transportation to participate in late arrival or early dismissal. Any violation of the above policies will result in the student being returned to study hall for the remainder of the semester/year.

Fundraising: No class, club, or any other group may begin a campaign to raise money without

advance approval by the principal. Students will not be allowed to bring any outside fund-

raising items to sell at school.

Card Playing/Gambling: No card playing and/or gambling will be allowed at school.

Distribution of Literature: No pamphlets, posters, or literature of any kind may be distributed

on school grounds without prior approval of the administration.

Transcripts: Students will use their parchment account to order transcripts. School Insurance: It is urged that all students take the school accident insurance protection

plan offered at the beginning of the school year. Wren High School works with Bollinger

Insurance and forms are in the front office. Parents will complete all forms and payment

through Bollinger and not through the school.

Students participating in interscholastic athletics, industrial technology, chorus, band, and

physical education are required to purchase this insurance. Students whose parents have

necessary coverage and do not wish to carry this insurance must complete a parental

insurance waiver form.

School Fees: The collection of school fees is a necessary part of operating a high school.

School fees are used for a number of consumable items including paper, I.D. cards, postage

for report cards and newsletters, and other consumables that students would utilize in

Page 46: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

classes. All fees go directly back to the student in the form of educational services. Wren is

dedicated to keeping this fee as low as possible while maintaining our high academic

standards. Fees for the 2016-2017 school year are $35.00. To re-enroll, a student must pay

all fees owed from last year.

ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Students and parents are encouraged to make a careful study of the total program of subjects

offered in grades 9-12 prior to the selection of subjects for respective grades. It is advisable

to decide on a program of studies at the beginning of the ninth grade and to continue in that

program throughout high school.

REGULATION TO SUPPORT WREN HIGH SCHOOL'S REMEDIATION PROGRAM: Students who fail to meet

standard on certain standardized tests administered in grades one through ten (10) may be

required to enroll in a remediation program. High school students who meet state guidelines

for remediation must reserve one period in their schedule for remediation. All freshmen will

develop a four year plan of study. Students and parents will be assisted by high school

administrators and counselors in developing this plan.

Requirements for a High School Diploma: In order to graduate, students must have 24 units. The units must be broken down into the following areas:

Subject Units Required *English 4 Math 4 Science 3 U.S. History 1 Government .5 Economics .5 Social Studies 1 **P.E. or ROTC 1 Computer Science 1 ***Foreign Language or Vocational course 1 Electives 7

*Not more than one course in English may be taken during the school year. This does not include elective courses such as speech, journalism, etc.

**Only two units of physical education may be applied to graduation requirements. A health unit must be taken.

***Students planning to attend a four year university should earn a minimum of two credits in the same foreign language.

A student may not apply for more than 8 units of credit during the regular school year

Page 47: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

and not more than 2 units of credit during summer school in any one year.

A maximum of six units of credit earned in summer school and/or through correspondence may be counted in the credits required for a diploma.

Dual-Credit Program: Students may earn Carnegie units for college course work if the course is not offered at the high school. The courses must be applicable to baccalaureate degrees. A three (3) semester hour college course will transfer 1 Carnegie Unit when the institution is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Only juniors and seniors with permission from the principal may participate in the Dual Credit Program.

It should be kept in mind that a high school diploma does not guarantee admission to college. It becomes a basis for admission only when college entrance requirements have been met by the student. Required Number of Courses: Each student is required to register for English, math, science, and social studies each year that he or she is in high school. Placement will be based on teacher and counselor recommendations. Exemptions to school recommendations for placement may be granted with a signed parent/student waiver and permission from the principal.

Mandatory Course Requirements: The following mandatory course requirements for course

registration are in effect:

● 9th graders must select a minimum of seven courses per semester:

○ English 1, Academic Enhancement, Computer Tech I, math, science, Global Studies

I, physical education and/or NJROTC, and 1 elective course. Remedial/resource

courses may also be required.

● 10th graders must select a minimum of seven courses per semester:

○ English, math, science, social studies, and 2-4 elective courses. Remedial/resource

courses may also be required.

● 11th graders must select a minimum of six courses per semester:

○ English, math, science, government/ economics, and 2-3 elective courses. Certain

courses at the Career and Technology Center may be substituted for math or

science requirements. Remedial/resource courses may also be required.

Career Clusters: All students should choose a Career Cluster to plan their course selection.

The initial choice of a career cluster does not restrict course selection, nor does it limit a

student's ability to vary a career choice later.

Page 48: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

Course Changes: Teachers are employed and schedules are made based on students’ course

selections; therefore, it is extremely difficult to change a course once it is chosen. Changes

will only be made for the following reasons:

to meet requirements for graduation

in case of a school-based error in scheduling (determined by guidance or principal)

NO OTHER REASONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Homeroom Grade Placement: The number of units earned determines a student’s homeroom. *

Grade 9 Successful completion of 8th grade English and math

Grade 10 Six units earned (must include one unit of English and one unit of math)

Grade 11 Twelve units earned (must include two units of English and two units of math)

Grade 12 Eighteen units earned (must include three units of English and three units of math

Junior-Senior Prom: Students must be classified at the beginning of the school year as a

Junior or Senior.

Graduation: Students who have earned units within one required course for graduation may participate in graduation ceremonies. Board Policy IKF-R

year may participate in graduation ceremonies. They will obtain their high school diploma

when they have completed the 24 required units.

Grade Point Average (GPA) Guidelines: All courses attempted by a student will be included in the GPA. Any course taken the second time will be considered in the GPA.

Page 49: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

GPA determination will be based upon numerical values received in classes as outlined by the

uniform grading scale policy adopted by the State Board of Education in January 2007.

Students enrolled in honors, advanced placement, and dual credit courses will receive

appropriate weighting.

Students may retake the same course at the same difficulty level under the following

conditions:

Only courses in which a grade of a D or F was earned may be retaken;

The course in which a D or F was earned may be retaken during the current

academic year or no later than the next academic school year;

The student’s record will reflect all courses taken and the grade earned, with the

following exception:

Students taking courses for a Carnegie unit prior to their ninth-grade year may retake

any such course during their ninth-grade year.

In this case, only the ninth-grade retake grade will be used in figuring the student’s

GPA, and only the ninth-grade attempt will show on the transcript.

This rule will apply whether the grade earned is higher or lower than the pre-ninth

grade attempt.

Please make note of the following important information in regards to grades and academic

honors:

Credit Recovery:

In order for a student to recover a class, the failing grade must be between a 50-59. Recovery

grade for failing assignments and/or a course is a 60.

Dual Credit:

Conversion for Dual Credit classes: A-95; B-85; C-75; D-65 and F-51.

Honor Society GPA requirements: A student’s GPA is cumulative from the beginning of his/her high school coursework

2017-2018 Beta Club Induction: 3.5

2017-2018 National Honor Society Induction: 4.3

Honor Graduates: 4.3 (The GPA requirements for Honor Graduates will increase to 4.4 for 2018-2019 school year and 4.5 for the 2019-2020 school year)

Junior Marshals: Students will be selected from among the top-ranking juniors.

Page 50: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

Guidance Services: The counselors at Wren High School are dedicated to encouraging

students in their emotional, educational, and vocational development. They assist parents

and students in matters concerning classroom placement, grade reports, and transcripts, as

well as work assignments when a student is ill. The counselors are also available to help

students with personal problems and college/ career decisions.

Problems or concerns about schedules and academics should be directed to the assigned

counselor. To arrange a conference, parents may call 850-5909 and request a scheduled

conference time.

Students may come by the Main Office before school or during lunch to arrange a conference with

any of the counselors. This procedure should be followed except in emergency situations.

Students should not report to the guidance office between classes unless prior arrangements have

been made with teachers. A permit will be issued by the guidance office to cover the scheduled

time that a student is to report.

National Honor’s Society (NHS) and National Beta Club: Selection for membership in the Wren

Chapter of the National Honor’s Society or Beta Club of Secondary Schools is based on

outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR NATIONAL BETA CLUB:

Page 54: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

● 9th graders: Any 9th grader that earns a 3.5 or above after the first nine weeks of their

freshman year, will be invited by letter to join the Beta club.

● 10th graders, 11th graders, and 12th graders: Maintain a cumulative grade point ratio of

3.5; be a member of the sophomore, junior, or senior class; has attended Wren High

School for at least one semester.

● All members must follow the disciplinary code of conduct and standards for membership.

Failure to do so will result in a review by the faculty council and possible membership

termination.

** Any changes to the Life and Hope Scholarships will change according to the state guidelines.

(TBA)

EVALUATION AND DISMISSAL:

The faculty council shall then evaluate candidates on the basis of service, leadership, and

character. Members who do not maintain a cumulative grade of 4.3 (NHS) or 3.5 (Beta) or who fall

below the standards which were the basis for their selection will be given written notification and

sufficient time to correct these deficiencies. If the deficiencies are not corrected, the student will

be dismissed from the organization. In the case of flagrant violation of civic laws or school rules

that result in out-of- school suspension or in-school suspension, the student may be dismissed. A

member does not have to be warned prior to immediate dismissal.

HOMEWORK POLICY:

Student achievement improves when homework is assigned regularly and when students

conscientiously complete it. Assignments, which are well-designed and related directly to class

work, are an extension of students learning beyond the classroom. Homework gives students

experience in following directions, making judgments, and maintaining self-discipline and

responsibility.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:

Homework will be closely monitored and will be graded. Reasonable amounts of homework will

be given on a regular basis.

The student will be responsible for make-up work. Completion grades may be given for the

homework assignment. *Freshman Academy students will receive lunch detention for failure to

complete homework assignments. Excessive lunch detention and/or failure to serve lunch

detention will result in after school detention and/or ISS. Please contact Freshman Academy for

the complete lunch detention consequences.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARENTS:

1. Help your child value homework.

2. Show him/her how it relates to everyday life.

3. Set up a well-stocked, comfortable place for your child to work.

4. Establish a specified time to do homework daily.

Page 55: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

55

5. Reinforce the idea that homework is the student's responsibility but that you're

always there to help.

6. Monitor your child's progress; be consistent in your involvement of the

homework process.

Cheating Policy: Students are expected to use honesty and integrity when completing

assignments. Any form of cheating/plagiarism is prohibited. Behavior that is unacceptable

includes, but is not limited to:

● Copying another student’s homework;

● Working with others on projects that are meant to be done individually;

● Looking at or copying another student’s test or quiz answers;

● Allowing another student to look at or copy answers from your test or quiz;

● Using any other method to get/give test or quiz answers;

● Taking a test or quiz in part or in whole to use or to give others;

● Copying information from a source without proper citations;

● Taking papers from other students, publications, or the Internet.

Violators of this policy will be disciplined on a case-by-case basis depending on the seriousness of

the violation, prior violations, and other factors. Wren High School will use the following policy in

dealing with any incident of cheating on tests, projects, written assignments, or any other

assignment in which the teacher directs students to work alone:

1ST OFFENSE CONSEQUENCES:

1. The student will be given a zero on the test or assignment.

2. The student's parents will be notified.

3. If identity violations/cheating involve Nova Net or other computer testing, there

will be further consequences.

2ND OFFENSE CONSEQUENCES:

1. The student will be given a zero on the test or assignment.

2. The student will be removed from any school elective office.

4. The student will be placed in In-School Suspension. (3 days)

5. The student's parents will be notified.

Additional Consequences: Consequences will be determined by administration.

EXAM INFORMATION AND EXEMPTION POLICY: *revised 2011

It is a Senior privilege to exempt exams. This applies to second semester only. Seniors may only

exempt based on the following qualifications:

● Final yearly average of an A (90) or above in a course;

● No behavioral referrals that result in O.S.S.;

● No behavioral referrals that result in a second offense ISS.

Page 56: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

56

(If a Senior receives a referral resulting in a second offense ISS or any OSS, he/she must take all

exams regardless of grades.)

All underclassmen (grades 9-11) will take comprehensive exams in every class at the end of the

first and second semesters.

Students taking an End-of-Course (EOC) examination will be required to take an end-of-year

assessment (to be determined by the teacher) for that course during the exam period.

Students taking Advanced Placement exams are not required to take a regular second semester

exam.

Athletic Handbook: Wren High School administrators and coaches will follow all guidelines as

stated in the Anderson School District One Athletic Handbook. Students and parents will receive a

copy of the handbook prior to the beginning of the sport’s season and should be aware of the

expectations of all student athletes.

Students with Special Health Care Needs: Many health care services can be provided for

students to keep them at school where they can learn and participate with other students. Our

goal is to provide information to parents and legal guardians about some of the services and

programs available for addressing the health care needs of students during the school day to help

students succeed in school. It is important that the necessary health care information is shared

with the appropriate people, such as teachers on duty during lunch, bus drivers, and cafeteria

employees to make sure that the students' needs are met throughout the school day.

Individual Health Care Plans or Individual Health Plans (IHPs): Individual health care plans are

also called individual health plans or IHPs. School nurses who are registered nurses write IHPs to

guide how a student's health care needs will be met while at school. The nurse works with the

student, the student's parents or legal guardians, the student's health care provider, and other

school staff to write the plan. IHPs are written for students who have special health care needs

that must be met by school staff during the school day. IHPs are also written for students who

have been approved by the school district to self-medicate or self-monitor. To learn more about

IHPs, please contact the school nurse.

SECTION 504 OF THE REHABILITATION ACT OF 1973 (SECTION 504): Section 504 is a federal law

that requires public schools to make adjustments so that students with certain disabilities can

learn and participate in settings like other students who do not have disabilities. To be eligible for

services under Section 504, a student must have a condition that substantially limits one or more

major life activities. A team decides if a student is eligible. The team should include the student's

parent or legal guardian, the student (if able), and others who know the student or know about

the student's disability, such as a teacher, a guidance counselor, a school nurse, and other school

staff. If the student is eligible, the team develops an individual accommodation plan. To learn

more about Section 504, contact your child's guidance counselor or Dr. Brian Keith, Director of

Special Services at 864-847-7344.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Students, ages 3 through 21 years, may receive

services under the IDEA if the student needs special education and related services to benefit

Page 57: Wren High School 2017-2018 · 2017-08-30 · 3 Principal’s Welcome Dear Parents and Students, At Wren High School, our goal is to strive to be the best in everything we do. As we

from his or her educational program. A team decides if a student qualifies for services under the

IDEA. The team includes the student's parent or legal guardian, teachers, and other school staff.

The team develops an individualized education program (IEP) if the student meets federal and

state requirements. To learn more about IDEA, contact Dr. Brian Keith, Director of Special Services

at 864-847-7344.

Medical Homebound Instruction: Medical homebound instruction is a service that is available for

students who cannot attend school for a medical reason even with the aid of transportation. A

physician must certify that the student has such a medical condition but may benefit from

instruction, and must complete the medical homebound form that the school district provides.

The school district then decides whether to approve the student for medical homebound services.

To learn more about medical homebound services, contact your child's guidance counselor or Mr.

Robbie Binnicker, Associate Superintendent at 864- 847-7344.
