The University of Nebraska (UNL), the Omaha

Sports Commission (OSC), and the Qwest

Center Omaha (QCO) are proud to be hosting

the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling

Championships.

Thank you for dedicating your time, talent, and

energy to help ensure a most successful

championship here in Omaha. Your

involvement is of paramount importance for you

will create the first impression for competitors

and fans alike.

This handbook has been designed to be a one-

stop resource for you throughout the event.

Please take the time to review its contents. Your

becoming more familiar with the event details

will not only enhance the experience for

yourself, but also for our many visitors and fans.

Local Organizing Committee

Formed in 2003, the Omaha Sports Commission is a non-profit group dedicated to making Omaha "THE" leading amateur sports community in America. The Commission works closely with area businesses and community leaders to help recruit and promote area sporting events. Our team is involved in every aspect of local sporting events. Working diligently to ensure Omaha is considered and ultimately chosen during the selection process; managing logistics before, during and after the event; maximizing publicity to ensure that every seat is filled and actively promoting our community as the elite amateur sporting event host. Qwest Center Omaha spans 422 acres, which is approximately 100 city blocks. The facility opened in September 2003 and contains more than 1,100,000 square feet, including a 194,000 square foot exhibition hall, more than 63,000 square feet of meeting space and an 18,300 seat arena. The site includes approximately 4,500 parking spaces, including a three story, 500 stall parking garage attached to the arena portion of the facility. The facility is connected via skywalk to the 450 room Hilton Omaha. Qwest Center Omaha is home to the Creighton University Men’s Basketball Team and the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Men’s Ice Hockey Team.

General Volunteer Information

High service levels and appropriate conduct are

expected from each volunteer. Your professionalism,

positive attitude and friendly smile are crucial to the

success of this championship and the city’s continuing

ability to attract elite sporting events. This may be the

first visit to Omaha for many of our guests; the

impressions and memories they take home with them

are largely dependent on the local volunteers with

whom they interact with during their visit.

Be polite and helpful. If you don’t know the answer to

a question, find someone who does.

Children, friends and family members are not to

accompany you on your volunteer shift.

Consuming alcoholic beverages, tobacco products or

illegal drugs while wearing the official 2010 NCAA

Division I Wrestling Championships volunteer

uniform is strictly prohibited and is grounds for

removal.

While on duty, all cell phones should be turned off; no

text messaging please.

Please do not ask competitors or coaches for

autographs, pictures, etc.

Please do not chew gum or eat while working on your

shifts. Volunteers should confine their eating to the

volunteer hospitality area.

Please arrive at least 25 minutes prior to the start

of your shift. Table workers must arrive one hour

prior to start of each session.

Please call your shift supervisor if you are unable to

fulfill your shift or if you will be late. If you are unsure

Directions to Qwest Center Omaha

FROM I-80 WESTBOUND (DES MOINES) AND I-29 NORTHBOUND (KANSAS CITY)

I-29 northbound merges with I-80 westbound in Council Bluffs. Travel on I-80 westbound.

Exit off of I-80 at Exit 1A and follow I-29 northbound.

Exit off I-29 onto I-480 westbound to Omaha.

Just across the Missouri River Bridge, exit off of I-480 at Exit 4 – Dodge Street.

Follow Dodge Street to 10th Street, and turn right on 10th Street. FROM I-29 SOUTHBOUND (SIOUX CITY)

Travel southbound on I-29.

Exit off of I-29 at Exit 53B to I-480 westbound.

Exit off of I-480 at Exit 4 – Dodge Street.

Follow Dodge Street to 10th

Street, and turn right on 10th

Street. FROM I-680 (EASTBOUND OR WESTBOUND)

Exit 30th

Street.

Travel southbound on 30th Street (2.9 miles).

Just past Fort Street, veer left toward the North Freeway. From there, you have two options:

OPTION 1

Veer right, following the signs onto Highway 75 (to I-480).

Veer left at the I-480 split, following I-480 eastbound.

Exit I-480 at exit 3A – 14th

Street.

Travel southbound on 14th

Street one half block to Capitol Avenue.

Turn left onto Capitol Avenue, and continue eastbound to 10th

Street.

Turn left on 10th Street and travel northbound on 10th Street. (total travel distance is 7.3 miles from I-680).

OPTION 2

Turn left onto Storz Expressway toward Eppley Airfield.

The Storz Expressway becomes Abbott Drive.

Travel southbound on Abbott Drive to 10th

Street.

Turn left onto 10th

Street (Total travel distance is 9.2 miles from I-680). FROM I-80 (EASTBOUND FROM LINCOLN AND NORTHBOUND FROM BELLEVUE)

From the I-80/I-480/H-75 interchange, follow the signs to I-480/H-75 North – Downtown.

Exit off of I-480 at Exit 3A – 14th

Street.

Travel southbound on 14th

Street one half block to Capitol Avenue.

Turn left onto Capitol Avenue, and continue eastbound to 10th

Street.

Turn left on 10th Street and travel northbound on 10th Street. OR

From I-80/I-480/H-75 interchange, follow I-480 to North H-75.

Exit off of North H-75 at the Cuming Street Exit.

Turn right on Cuming Street and travel eastbound to 10th

Street.

Turn right on 10th

Street and travel southbound. FROM EPPLEY AIRFIELD

Turn left out of airport terminal drive onto Abbott Drive heading southbound.

Travel southbound on Abbott Drive to 10th Street.

Turn left onto 10th Street.

Volunteer Packet Pick-Up

Due to parking restrictions during competition days we are asking that all volunteers pick up all necessary materials before the tournament begins. Packet pick-up will be available in the Grand Hallway at the Qwest Center Omaha: (Please have Photo ID available) Tuesday, March 16 12 pm - 2 pm 4 pm - 8 pm Wednesday, March 17 9 am - 12 pm 4 pm – 8 pm During these times you will receive the following:

You will need to sign for all of these materials. You will also be asked to sign a volunteer liability waiver. This waiver must be signed in order for you participate in this championship. If you cannot make it to the Qwest Center Omaha during any of these time blocks, please contact Amy Hornocker at 515/491-5160 or amy@omahasports.org to make other arrangements.

PARKING

Volunteer Parking will be in Lot D. Lot D is located directly

north of the Qwest Center Omaha and is on the east side of

10th Street. The lot can only be accessed off Abbott Drive. A

parking pass is required. (See Map on Page 13.)

CHECK-IN

Volunteers may enter through either the north or west

doors into the convention center. A table will be set up in

the Grand Hallway in front of Hall B for volunteers to

check-in and receive any information about that shift

assignment for a given day.

Again, if you are unable to make your shift or if you are

running late, please contact the appropriate supervisor. If

you do not know who that is, please call Amy Hornocker at

515/491-5160 or at amy@omahasports.org.

MEALS

Volunteers will receive an evening meal if their shift

overlaps the afternoon and evening sessions. Breakfast will

be provided for all volunteers working the morning shifts.

Snacks and beverages will be available throughout the day

in the Volunteer Hospitality area on the event level on the

north side of the building. (See Map on Page 12.)

Volunteers are not to take any food outside the designated

“Volunteer Hospitality Area.”

Meal passes will be provided when you pick – up your

volunteer packet. You may only go through the food line

one time, and you must have your meal card with you in

order to receive a meal.

Everyone will receive a break. Several volunteer will be

floating to make sure everyone receives appropriate breaks.

Volunteers may take restroom breaks as needed, as long as

another volunteer keeps your position covered.

PRACTICE AREA ATTENDANTS Description Assist with student - athlete needs as well as cleaning mats and making sure they are free of body fluids. Ensure that water coolers are continually replenished.

Volunteer Job Descriptions Continued

VENUE MAT CREWS Description Assist QCO staff with any help they need with set-up and tear down of equipment, as well as helping to ensure an orderly and secure competition floor. Your main objective will be to clean the mats and keep them free of body fluids.

MEDIA ASSISTANTS/RUNNERS Description Assist the University of Nebraska with any copy/print needs, media running, posting scores and other areas as needed.

MEDICAL (PHYSCIANS/ATHLETIC TRAINERS) Description Assist with medical needs as well as weigh-ins of the participating student-athletes.

TABLE WORKERS Description Assist with various duties associated with managing the matches.

TABLE WORKERS ASSISTANTS Description Assist the Table Crews with any requests that they might have.

Check-In Procedures

MEDICAL CHECKS/WEIGH - INS Description Assist with setting up, securing, and monitoring the area where the student – athletes go through medical checks and weigh – ins each morning of competition.

Volunteer Uniform

The official volunteer uniform is the NCAA shirt worn

with khaki pants and clean comfortable tennis shoes.

You may not wear any baseball caps or other hats.

Within the Qwest Center Omaha, you must wear

your volunteer credential and have it visible at all

times during your shift. Please keep your credential

in a secure place; lost credentials will be replaced for a

$165 fee.

The official shirts are short sleeve; if you are

concerned with being cold, a white long sleeve shirt

may be worn underneath.

The official uniform must be worn during all work

shifts. Additional volunteer apparel will not be

available.

Your uniform and personal appearance should be neat

and clean.

Please do not carry excess belongings, as there are no

secure storage areas. A coat rack will be provided at

the volunteer check-in area.

Neither the Omaha Local Organizing Committee nor

the NCAA is responsible for any theft or loss of

personal items.

AIRPORT INFORMATION DESK Description Greet officials, participants, fans and media as they arrive at the airport.

HOTEL INFORMATION DESKS Description Share your knowledge of Omaha with guests and others. Desks will be set up at the downtown hotels to answer visitor’s questions about the city as well as the event.

EVENT INFORMATION/VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN Description Provide information and general assistance during the event. You will also check-in volunteers and direct them to the appropriate areas.

FAN FESTIVAL Description Assist the NCAA with the 2010 NCAA Fan Festival located in Hall C of the Qwest Convention Center. Your contact is

HOSPITALITY Description Assist with hospitality rooms used by student-athletes, coaches, staff and volunteers. You will be responsible for hole punching any applicable meal cards.

GENERAL VOLUNTEER Description Assist in any capacity needed from errands to fan giveaways.

GRAND MARCH/PARADE OF ALL - AMERICANS Description Assist with the Grand March/Parade of All-Americans on Finals night. (Saturday, March 20th) Volunteers must wear business attire, please no heels.
