1 WRFL JUNIOR FOOTY RECORD
If you thought Week #3 of the WRFL Junior Finals Series was exciting, then strap yourselves in for another blockbuster weekend of football, as we wrap up another successful year of our junior competition. With 13 premiership cups already sitting proudly in their new homes, eight more teams will be fi ghting for grand fi nal
glory in the fourth and fi nal week of the WRFL Junior Finals Series. Walking around the two venues last Sunday, you couldn’t help but be drawn to the passion and electric atmosphere that is fi nals football. While we all share the same goal of winning, the hard work and efforts which have gone into being here today, has not gone unnoticed. Win, lose or draw, the experience of playing in a grand fi nal is something not all players get the opportunity to do, so soak it up and enjoy every minute of it. For a look at some of the moments from our Week #3 Grand Finals, be sure to check out our Images of the Week pages inside this edition. As the 2015 Junior Finals Series comes to a close, the WRFL would like to acknowledge the sensational efforts given by the army of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the Junior Finals. Our thanks goes to host clubs- Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Altona Juniors and North Sunshine Football Clubs for their efforts over the past month of fi nals football. In other news, the league’s highly popular Junior
Presentation Night will once again be held at the Wyndham Cultural Centre, on Wednesday August 26. The night will celebrate the achievements of some of our most talented juniors players, our 2015 premiers as well as fi nd out who will take home the Best and Fairest awards. For more information, please ensure you contact your Club President or Administrator. Of course with the conclusion of the 2015 junior competition, it would be remiss of me not to thank the league’s two major junior sponsors. The Western Bulldogs Football Club, who sponsors our Under 9 to Under 14 grades, has been a wonderful support for grassroots football for many years. With the hugely popular Heartland Award a favourite among our juniors, the league would like to thank the Bulldogs for their contribution to the future talent of footballers in the west. The Werribee Football Club, who sponsors our Under 15-16 competition, has also been a great contributor to the development of junior football for many seasons. Also sponsoring the Under 18 competitions in the senior divisions, the league looks forward to continuing our relationship with the Tigers for many years to come. Remember if you haven’t already done so, don’t forget to tune into the latest episode of the WRFL Junior Footy Show where we will be talking to some of the premiership players and coaches from the week. Visit our website www.wrfl .asn.au for videos or keep up to date via our social media pages using the handle @westernregionfl . Until then, play hard, kick straight and best of luck to you and your team this Sunday, on this, the fi nal day of 2015.

JUNIOR UMPIRE PRESENTATION NIGHT
By Graeme HodgartOn Thursday August 6, approximately 170 umpires, parents, siblings and offi cials gathered at The Club in Caroline Springs for the announcement of the umpires for all WRFL Junior Grand Finals. The CEO of the WRFL, Bob Tregear, welcomed everyone and introduced Director of Umpiring, Mark Westgarth. Mark spoke briefl y about the year in umpiring and then invited AFL fi eld umpire and former WRFL umpire, Troy Pannell, to speak to the crowd.Troy began by relating his brief football career as a junior with the Hoppers Crossing Football Club and said that he made the shift to umpiring after the disappointment of four successive grand fi nal losses. Three games as a boundary umpire made him realise that he wasn’t a natural runner and so he changed to fi eld umpiring. An Under 12 Grand Final in his fi rst season eventually led him to adjudicate at three Division One Grand Finals in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Troy pointed out Terry O’Donnell, Bruce Pain, Terry McGarity and Henry McFerran as having a big infl uence on his umpiring career at the WRFL. Eventually he made the AFL list and has now chalked up over 170 games at the highest level. Troy invited anyone who had a question to ask and so he responded frankly and openly. During his talk he did mention that being a successful umpire came down to opportunities and working hard. Troy also stressed that you should always try to improve. Fitness was also a key element while getting in the right position as often as possible, was a very important part of umpiring. Then the junior awards were announced and handed out. Congratulations to the below umpires whose hard work, dedication and effort has seen them earn the following awards:Best First Year Boundary Umpires: Garrett Spinks, Shaun Kostizen, Harrison Bradley, Navdeep Singh and Ella Bradwell. Best First Year Goal Umpires: Darcy Kirkpatrick and Xavier Smith. Best First Year Field Umpires: Oliver Hunt-Stapleton, Coen Chung-Kum, Mathew Turcinovich, Jordan Fletcher, Shannon Van Boven.
Most Improved Umpires: Noah Piggott (fi eld), Adam Steger (goal), Jordan Wiltshire (boundary), Kai Abela (fi eld & boundary).
The President’s Award was presented by Henry McFerran, for persistent effort during the season, to Caitlin Kelly who is a fi rst year boundary umpire and has hardly missed a training session on Wednesdays at Scovell Reserve.
The main award for the evening is the Bruce Pain Perpetual Trophy which is awarded to the most promising junior umpire. The trophy, presented by Bruce Pain himself, went to Michael Gurrie who is a budding fi eld umpire.
Then it was time for the announcement of those umpires selected to offi ciate in the WRFL 2015 Junior grand fi nals. The prestige and most sought after Under 16A game was given to Michael Gurrie and Dominic Cernaz (fi eld umpires), Jarod Sutton and Harrison Bradley (boundary umpires) and Nick Semaan and Colin Hood (goal umpires). It is interesting to note that 75 per cent of the umpires awarded junior grand fi nals were teenagers. Many umpires were visibly happy with their grand fi nals and there was a great deal of congratulations being expressed and passed between each other.
Umpire Administrator Maree Wilke, was also thanked for the hard work and outstanding organisation in put everything together so that the night could run very smoothly.
