ししのデザインには、ドイツ人写真家ジュリア・

バウセンハードが制作した Kafka というタイプ

フェイスを使用している。Kafka は、その名前か

らも分かるように、チェコ出身のドイツ語作家

フランツ・カフカの手書き文字（「審判」の原稿

と彼の日記）を元にデザインされたタイプフェ

イスだ。手書き文字は、たとえ同じ言葉を綴っ

ても書き手によってその言葉が持つ意味や質感

がまったく異なることを、思い起こせてくれる。

カフカの筆触に感じられる、不安定さ、神経質

さ、そしてそれらと一見相反するような、しな

やかさと大胆さ。そうした要素のひとつひとつ

が、カフカの人生や小説をくっきりと映し出し

ている。字形から想像力が滲み出てくるような、

カフカの筆さばきを、私たちは借りることにし

た。

今回の記事では、このタイプフェイスのデザイ

ナーであり写真家でもあるバウセンハードの作

品を掲載する。彼女の写真と、彼女がデザイン

したカフカの文字で綴られたカフカの文章とを

並べてみると、両者の作品が緊密に混淆し共振

していることがわかる。カフカが小説の中に繰

り返し描いた、孤独や静寂の先に拡張していく

想像力の豊かさを、バウセンハードの写真に切

り取られた風景の中にも、鋭く感じ取ることが

できるだろう。

Here at Shishi we have chosen to use the typeface

"Kafka" which was created by the German

photographer Julia Bausenhardt. The Font

"Kafka" as its name indicates, is based on the

handwriting style of Franz Kafka, one of most

influential German-language novelists of modern

literature. The hand writen style reminds us

how words can inflect different meaning and

texture according to the writers mood. Kafka’s

letters have a delicacy and instability and at

the same time flexibility and boldness that is

both functional and emotive. Here at Shishi

we have chosen to incorporate this distinctive

hand writing styled font in as it coveys so many

qualities that we admire and wish to explore.

In this article we feature works by Julia

Bausenhardt. When her photographs and Kafka’s

handwritten text are arranged together it is clear

that their works are resonant. Here we can see

that the landscapes in Bausenhardt’s photos

convey the same imagination of solitude and

silence which Kafka repeatedly expressed in his

stories.

Julia Bausenhardt's Kafka font is based on the handwriting

of author Franz Kafka and captures his expressive handwriting

style, using the manuscript of The Trial and his diaries as the

primary reference. This font reflects the elegance, nervousness,

irregularness and uniqueness of Kafka's hand writing yet remains

readable and simply a very very well crafted set of typography.

Julia BausenhardtJulia Bausenhardt is a German artist, born in 1982 in Hamburg and raised

in a small rural town in Northern Germany. Julia attributes her upbringing

surrounded by local Woods as a inspiration for her work and ongoing

interest in forests and fairy tales.

Julia is currently studying photography and graphic design in Hamburg

and is looking forward to finishing her diploma thesis next year.
