From the Editor’s Desk The May edition of WSD is finally out. I do not have much to say

about this edition apart from stating the fact that we are working

really hard to bring the best material to you. In this edition, we have

added a new section called picture story where a picture is sent to us

by a photographer and he/she also tells us the story behind that

picture. The first picture story is told by Solomon Ranjith in our magazine. The story of

Reni (an Indian woman caught on the wrong side of arranged marriage) continues from

the previous edition. The link to the first part of the story is given in the story for those

who missed reading it..

We would like to hear about the kind of content you wish to have in our magazine. You

can get in touch with me at [email protected] and leave your feedback.

About the selected short story & its author The following short story titled, “Reni: An Indian woman & her fight” is written by Reni.

The true story of her life is presented in our magazine in the form of a serial and this

edition contains the second part of this series. The first part of the story can be accessed

in our previous edition at http://www.writesomethingdude.com/April 2012.pdf

It shows the heart-wrenching situation of an Indian girl who faced the age old wrath of

our Indian system called “Arranged Marriage”. It also shows the struggle she has to go

through in her day to day life fighting emotional trauma. The second part takes us into the

core problem and makes the readers aware of the emotional trauma faced by Reni.

If you wish to write some good words to Reni, you can do so by sending an email to the

Editor-in-Chief at [email protected].

Reni: an Indian woman & her fight – Part II I was online and saw his chat invite. The first words he mentioned, “Hey wife, it's me, your hubby”. I still remember each and every single word, as if it happened yesterday. We started chatting, talking about our engagement that took place a few hours ago. Everything was so perfect, as if I was dreaming. We were falling in love with each other, at least I was. Next day, both of us got into our respective trains, he to Delhi & me to Kolkata. I was thinking about him when my train started, and smiling. People in my compartment must have thought I had gone crazy. A beep on my cell, his message, “Darling, this is the last time we are going in opposite directions”. Thinking about him the whole time, I slept. We started talking over phone, chatting over the internet regularly. Back at home, our parents had started preparations for our wedding. Dates were not yet decided, but everybody wanted the wedding to be early, including me & my fiancé. All of a sudden, days seemed shorter. There were so many things to be done; getting appointments from suppliers, goggling about things needed, reading reviews of bridal & pre bridal packages, and the best of all, shopping. I prepared a checklist to make sure nothing was missed. Trying to get back early from office, so that I could chat and talk to him became a routine. One important part was the online wedding card. I had always wanted to design my online wedding card myself. The song I had wanted, the pictures, the presentation, words in it. I started looking for the song and “I just wanna spend my life with you”, my favorite one was chosen for my online card. I started visiting various websites for the online card preparation. The typical going to be married soon's excitement. Sharing each and every single part of my day with him became a habit. I was sharing everything with the better half of mine, or rather the best half. That's what I believed and felt. He made me feel that way. He loved me, cared for me; at least, that is what I thought. I asked for his FB account name, so that I could add him to my friend's list. I wanted him to know me better, who I am, how I am with my friend's etc. He said he didn't have a FB account. I felt a little awkward, but then he said he had always been a shy and introvert person and so doesn't use FB. That seemed fine. He was totally opposite of what I am. I was glad he at least shared his insecurity and weaknesses with me. He was true to me; at least that's what I felt at that point of time. That day I was waiting for his call. I thought he might be busy. I called him up at lunch, but he didn't pick up. Evening, then night, I was waiting to hear from him. I started getting worried. I logged in to see if he was online and he wasn't. I left him several mails,

Page 6: Write Something Dude - May 2012

messages, but no response. I didn't know what to do. I checked with my parents if they have heard anything from his parents. My parents called his parents and they said that it's fine. He might have gone out with friends and may be did not get a chance to call. They said they called him immediately after talking to my parents and they had a talk with him. He was busy in a team dinner and will call me as soon as possible. I found it a little unusual. If he was busy in a team dinner, he could at least excuse himself for couple of minutes and respond to my call. At least he could drop me a message saying he was fine. I said to myself, don't be paranoid. May be, he was genuinely busy and the most important thing was that he was fine. I fell asleep while waiting for his call. The next morning, I thought of calling him up. Then felt that may be hewould have got really late by the time he returned from dinner, so better not disturb him. Post lunch I checked to see if he was online. No. Evening, still no. Called him, his phone was switched off. Dropped an email on his official as well as personal ID. “Take care sweetheart, sleep well and call me as soon as you get a chance. I am waiting”. But no response. 3rd day and I was getting worried. Tried reaching him several times, but the phone was switched off. My phone beeped, I thought it must be him, but it was some unknown number and the message said, “He is mine. He can never be yours, because he is already involved with me”. I wanted to know what all this was about. I called that number back, but no one responded. Finally around 3:00 PM, his phone rang. Oh my God, I was so relieved that it rang, and finally he picked it up. I didn't know what to say, where to start from. “What happened? Where were you? How are you?” …and all sorts of things. I was waiting eagerly to hear his voice. I asked him about the message I got. He said that it was a female colleague, his senior at work, who referred him at the job through a common contact. At work they are good friends, but there was no such involvement that she was talking about. And also that she had always been interested in him, and is now forcing him to leave me and be with her. I was shocked. Why would someone do something like this? How could she force you for anything? “Why were you not picking up the call?” I was totally blank and confused. He started explaining everything one by one. I realize now that he is pretty good at making stories. He swore on his parents that he did not have any involvement with that girl and that they were just colleagues. They were studying together and had known each other since their college days. When he was struggling to get into a good job, she referred him, and on her referral only he got the present job. Because of this favor, she thinks that she owns him. He said that she had a bad reputation at their workplace and nobody likes her. She is the kind of woman, who keeps looking for opportunities to trap guys. According to him, when she got to know that he was engaged, she asked him to resign because she referred him into this job so that she could sleep with him. She took his phone and internet device because they belonged to their office. That is why he couldn't come online, respond to my calls.

I wasn't completely convinced because if this was the case, he could have at least called me from another phone to let me know about all this. My female intuition was saying that something was wrong. I had not known him for long, but my father had known his parents for the last 30 years. His father was a respectful man in our society. He was the first person people in my society would go to for suggestions. There were a lot of reasons to not believe him, but then there were a lot to believe him too.

To be continued in our next edition…

The title of the film is “The Job”. The video makes us laugh and at the same time makes

us think about how in today’s world, earning money has become more prominent than the

kind of job one does. It gives our mind a pause and tells it, “Are you doing this job for

money or satisfaction my dear friend?”

Picture Story – by Solomon Ranjith (https://www.facebook.com/solomonranjith)

In my journey of photography which I started a year back, I have come to know a lot

about the real essence of art and beauty present in photos. A photo brings out the

expressions and the views of a person through a camera.

So here in this picture collage I present my neighborhood kids from a street called Meena

nagar which is located in Bhongir, Andhra Pradesh, South India. They always fascinated

me with their playfulness, swift moves, and smartness and moreover that cuteness,

innocence, gestures of amazement, trying to explore every little thing in their universe.

Well these two little kids over here are pretty popular in my surrounding area. They are

just 5 years old; yet, they have influenced and manipulated 20 kids of their age group to

follow them. They roam in packs and are very naughty and notorious. The boy in white

tee is Sunny: leader of the whole group and boy in blue shirt is Bhanu: the smart and the

assembler, advisor of the whole group and right hand to the leader. I discovered that these

kids are strongly bound together with their friendship.

Page 10: Write Something Dude - May 2012

This made me imagine how I was in my childhood and anyone who saw them would

surely remember their childhood days. It would remind us of the times we have broken

up friendship and then befriended the same person for silly reasons, laughed out our

hearts without worries and frowned until we gained that special attention from elders.

We were super heroes by tying a sheet of cloth or a towel on the back as a superman,

batman or any favorite fictional character. We explored the tastes of things around us

ranging from sand to fire.

Friendship is a gift that God has given us and is available with love and compassion as its

key ingredients.

So take joy in it and have memorable times in your life!
