I am delighted by the overwhelming response the inaugural edition of OPaL Beads has received. I see OPaL Beads as a great platform to herald the developments and achievements of OPaL, to exchange ideas and most importantly to explore the personality facets of OPaLians which would otherwise stay unnoticed.

We have had an eventful quarter where we have clocked new milestones, and have set new targets for the future. This quarter was studded with various achievements but the one that stood out was accomplishing the sales target of 100 KT sales and reaching 1000 crore turnover. This remarkable feat can be ttingly attributed to the operational excellence of all the Heads and the hard work of their respective teams. Reaching a target in a considerably short period is a testament to our commitment towards making OPaL a brand to reckon with. I congratulate each and every one who contributed in this resounding achievement.

Another noteworthy accomplishment was NABL accreditation for OPaL's central laboratory. OPaL has successfully attained this accreditation by standing the stern and rigorous assessment of NABL of international standards. This is a giant leap for OPaL as NABL accredited laboratories are acceptable in 87 economies across the globe.

Let's vow to keep the momentum going and scale new heights in the future.

Good things happen when the team comes together

Celebrating the achievement by cutting a cake

Shri Avinash Joshi, IAS, MD-OPaL, Smt Vimla Nigania, Head HR, Shri Makarand Dixit, Head Marketing were in attendance. In a short speech, Shri Makarand Dixit attributed the success to all the stakeholders along with his core team. OPaL kicked off its operations in March 2017 with the vision of becoming a dominant name in the petrochemicals sector. The growth targets set were high and ambitious but not unachievable. The challenge was taken head-on by OPaL's inspired leadership and committed workforce. Thanks to their commitment, the rst major sales target has been secured. However, there is a long way to go, bigger targets to achieve while we make OPaL a brand to reckon with.

Swachh Cracker... Swachh OPaL… Swachh Bharat! We spend most of our days' time at our workplace. Our surrounds have a signicant inuence on our mental and physical health. However, it is surprising to see how many people who are so obsessed about the cleanliness at their homes are extremely apathetic towards the cleanliness of their workplace. Keeping your workplace neat, clean and tidy is the collective responsibility of all the employees and the management. This should be a matter of priority. Keeping in mind these things, Swachhata Abhiyaan was carried out at OPaL's Dahej plant. Shri Manoj Motiyani-DGM Cracker, OPaL, initiated this positive campaign to have a cleaner work premises. Under this initiative, a cleanliness drive is undertaken every 15 days. This initiative is a combined effort of OPaL employees and other members of the Cracker unit.

Energy conserved is energy produced. Yet another energy saving project has been successfully executed by Cracker Electrical team at OPaL. The replacement of GI fan of the condenser of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning ( HVAC ) system by FRP fan have the higher lifespan and low maintenance compared to GI fan. A considerable amount of energy is saved due to its lightweight feature without sacricing the cooling effect (air ow).

Power saving per day is 346.88 KWH which is more than 25% of its power consumption. Due to these efforts, the plant is saving of Rs. 2775/- per day (considering Rs. 8/KWH rate of power) that's equivalent to Rs.10 Lakhs annually. The energy saving project was very effective & efcient considering the amount of saving and the payback period.

How did the idea of forming a band come to you? And who are the current band members? We are a group of 6 currently - Shashwat Saxena, Executive, Polymer, Upamanyu Saha, Executive, U&O, Ranjeet Jadav, Executive, U&O, Rahul Hirani, DET Cracker, Shreyas Berawala, DET Cracker and myself. We wanted to do something creative and all of us were driven by the passion for music so forming a band was a natural thing. As the Independence Day is celebrated with much fanfare at our Dahej plant, we thought this is a perfect time and platform to showcase our talent before a large number of people.

Who came up with this funky band name - Out of Ofce (O3 Acoustica)? It was a team effort. We all wanted to name the band something in the line of out of the box. Then after a lot of brainstorming, we thought the name out of ofce has a nice ring to it, it's catchy and easy to remember so we decided to go with it. We are happy that it has been received so well.

How was the experience of the 15th August performance?First of all, the performance on such a big stage and in front of such a big audience gave us extreme excitement but it also gave us a lot of condence and self-belief that we can perform and express ourselves. That feeling was quite special as none of us has the experience of live performances. Also, right from the rst song the audience was totally engaged in the performance and was encouraging us with the wave of hands and clapping. It was an enthralling experience.

What songs did you play?We started off with Aashayein from Iqbal which was followed by Pichle Saat Dinon Mein from Rock On and the famous Aadat song of the Jal band. Also, keeping in mind the patriotic theme of the day, we performed Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai from Roja. We chose this song because it talks about multiculturism of India and at OPaL we have the same work culture where people from different background come together and work toward a common objective.

Who are your idols in music?I am a big admirer of A R Rahman and Javed Ali. The music that A R Rahman creates is special and I love listening to all his songs.

Was it difcult to strike a balance between work and practice? It was, but our Supervisors and Head Of Departments were very supportive. We had requested our HOD to keep all the band members in the same shift so as to get time together to practice. After our shift would get over we would stay back and practice for a couple of hours. This would not have been possible without the support of our HODs and shift in-charge.

We caught up with Tapan Doshi, Sr. Executive, Polymer, the lead singer of the band, to talk about the process of forming the band, the story behind the catchy name and much more.

OPaL's official band - O3 Acoustica was launched on 15th August at Independence Day's celebration at the Dahej plant.

Vietnam - Mi amour!

As I stand on a battle ground I dreamed The air thick with death The final man takes no breathWho stands in the gaudy dying, holdingThe crucial weapon? What is his skin? What is the colour of the death for him?

On a dusky January morning of 1971, I saw a face. The dark black stencil of that face was smeared in the wall of our school building - just painted in bright yellow. I asked my mother who is this man. My mom keeping a tight hand on my shoulder told me the name – Ho Chi Min. Who is this Ho Chi Min? I asked again. “A revolutionary from Vietnam, the father of guerrilla warfare” my mother replied in a cool voice. The terms revolutionary, guerrilla, Vietnam all were unknown to me.

But from that day I always wanted to experience Vietnam - a child's dream nally came true on 10th January 2018 when I landed at Ho Chi Min city for attending the Complast -2018.In my dream I could hear the steps of long march, occasional sound of bombs, screeching noise of aeroplane …. The dragon shaped country intruded in to my mind.

The city is somewhat like our Kolkata or South-Mumbai of early eighties. An oxymoron combination of clean and dirty, modern and old, communism and non-violence, sky-scrappers and dingy lanes makes it interesting. Moreover, it is surrounded by a back water stream. As usual the strand is bubbling with life during the evening. Myself and Suvendu, my corporate communication pal, used to go for morning as well as late evening walk in front of it.

About 35 years back I saw a movie called “Apocalypse Now” depicting the 1969 Vietnam war against America, and that is how I came to understand what is guerrilla war. One day, despite our busy schedule, we managed to recapitulate our remembrance about the guerrilla warfare and landed in Cu Chi Tunnels.

In order to combat better-supplied American and South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War, Communist guerrilla troops known as Viet Cong (VC) dug tens of thousands of miles of tunnels, including an extensive network running underneath the Cu Chi district northwest of Saigon.

Soldiers used these underground routes to house troops, transport communications and supplies, lay booby traps and mount surprise attacks, after which they could disappear underground to safety. To combat these guerrilla tactics, U.S. and South Vietnamese forces trained soldiers known as “tunnel rats” to navigate the tunnels in order to detect booby traps and enemy troop presence.

Now part of a Vietnam War memorial park in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the Cu Chi tunnels have become a popular tourist attraction. It was maintained beautifully. Commercial attractions and old remnants mingle with pathological perfection. A portion of the area was made as a shooting range and we tested the experience of ring AK-47.

Sounds of laughter, clicking of seles, hue and cry of the tourists, vibration of ring canopy and many more but within those dins and bustles I became alone. All of a sudden, the tourist spot turned in to a battle ground for me, I could see millions of youth ghting for the nation, their raw youth backed with nothing but conviction.

1. Workshop on Stress Management:It is important to tackle the causes of stress at the workplace as stress at work can lead to problems for individual's health, work relationships, and overall work environment. People who let stress get better of them are at risk of developing serious physical and mental health issues. Knowing how to effectively manage one's stress will help in boosting one's immune system & hence dealing with stress is important in today's fast-moving world. To prevent such issues, a customized workshop on “Stress Management” was organized for OPaL employees on 28th and 29th August 2018. The workshop was conducted by the experts from VIKALP Institute.

2. Workshop on Self Awareness & Executive Development:Self-Awareness is the thinking skill that focuses on one's ability to accurately judge his/her own performance and behaviour and to respond appropriately to different situations in life. Self-Awareness helps an individual to tune into their emotions, as well as to the behaviours and feelings of others. To understand this concept in detail, a workshop on “Self-Awareness & Executive Development” was organised for Executives, GET's and DET's on 30th and 31st August 2018. The workshop was conducted by the faculty from NationalTraining.

3. Preparatory training programme for BOE-BAE Exam. With respect to the minimum skill set requirement for operating certain categories of Boilers, Boiler Operations Examination (BOE) and Boiler Attendant Examination (BAE) are conducted by the Government bodies. The Pygmalion Effect: The Secret Power to Bring Change

16

There is a proven theory in the eld of psychology that if someone is told that he can do better and have the same expectations from him, he will. This theory is called Pygmalion effect. It is an interpersonal motivational phenomenon.

This theory is supported by the fundamentals of evolution of human personality, which iterates that evolution in human personality has been social rather than biological. It has proceeded not by heritable variations in the species, but mostly by social, intellectual and moral innovation transmitted to individuals and generations by imitation, custom or education. In short, the Pygmalion effect is a psychological phenomenon wherein high expectations lead to improved performance in a given area.

It is named on a great sculptor Pygmalion from Cyprus. In Greek mythology, he was a sculptor who fell in love with the statue of a beautiful woman he created. His work was so fair and realistic that all other real women paled in comparison. He so wished her to be real that when he kissed the statue, its lips felt warm to him. Galatea, as he called the statue, was alive! In essence, the Pygmalion effect is about the power of self-fullling prophecies, creating a virtuous cycle of positive expectations that affect those around you.

Several successful researches on this effect were conducted in the past and documented. Some of them are as reckoned below:

“Story of James Sweeney and George Johnson: James Sweeney was a teacher at Tulane University, where Johnson worked as a porter. Aware of the Pygmalion effect, Sweeney had a hunch that he could teach anyone to be a competent computer operator. He began his experiment, offering Johnson lessons each afternoon. Other university staffs were dubious, especially as Johnson appeared to have a low IQ. But the Pygmalion effect won out and the former janitor (porter) eventually became responsible for training new computer operators.

Story of Rockaway district ofce of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company: In the year 1962, an experiment was conducted wherein six separate group of insurance agents along with their managers were formed. The groups were formed based on the past performances of insurance agents. One group has all top performers including their managers, called superstaff; one has middle performers, a group of average performers, etc. In case of group of average performers, although the district manager expected only average performance from this group, its productivity increased signicantly. This was because the manager in charge of the group refused to believe that she was less capable than the manager of the super staff or that the agents in the top group had any greater ability than the agents in her group. She insisted in discussions with her agents that every person in the group had greater potential than those in the superstaff, lacking only their years of experience in selling insurance. She stimulated her agents to accept the challenge of outperforming the superstaff. As a result, the productivity of her group increased by a higher percentage than the superstaff did.

The Golem Effect (Pygmalion in Reverse)Too often, managers have the exact opposite effect on their people; they are quick to judge and label a team member as an underperformer. They then relate to them with low expectations, and 'prove' themselves right when the employee delivers poor performance. The managers then pat themselves on the back for their astute judgment of people's innate abilities and then go on labelling other underperformers, continuing the cycle. This reverse Pygmalion Effect has come to be known as the Golem Effect.

The Revelation of Scientic Research on Organisation Performance: The psychology behind the performance of the organisations has been studied and researched by many renowned psychologists. The evidence available from these scientic researches now reveals that:

• What managers expect of subordinates and the way they treat them largely determine their performance and career progress.

• A unique characteristic of superior managers is the ability to create high performance expectations that subordinates fulll.

• Less effective managers fail to develop similar expectations, and as a consequence, the productivity of their subordinates suffers.

• Subordinates, more often than not, appear to do what they believe they are expected to do.

There is a direct relation between level of expectations and achievement of outcome. In, a scientic research by David McClelland at Harvard University and John Atkinson at University of Michigan demonstrated that the relationship of motivation to expectations varies in the form of a bell shaped curve. It is interesting to note that subordinates will not be motivated to reach high levels of productivity unless they consider the boss's high expectations realistic and achievable. If they are encouraged to strive for unattainable goals, they eventually give up trying and settle for results that are lower than they are capable of achieving. The key is not having extremely high expectation from subordinates because this way they themselves will not believe in them then.

The Pygmalion effect seems to involve us leveraging our full capabilities and avoiding the obstacles created by low expectations.

Great leaders believe in the potential of their people, and help them become all they are capable of being. To create a high-performing team, one must have high expectations of one's team members, believe in their ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and help them set stretch goals. They might just surprise their manager, and themselves.
