Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations9.2Chemical equations are used to describe chemical reactions.

WORD EQUATION uses chemical names (words) to describe a reaction

    E.g.  Hydrogen + oxygen à water

FORMULA EQUATION – uses chemical formulas to describe a reaction

(called a skeleton equation if  no coefficients added)

  • Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations9.2

To show that mass/atoms are conserved we must count all atoms

Coefficients   give the number of molecules of each compound or element

Subscripts – give the number of atoms of each element.Total atoms shown:

    coefficient

    subscript

    ___ hydrogen, ___ oxygen

  • Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations9.2

When the number of atoms of each reactant element(s) are the same as the number of atoms of each product element(s), the equation is balanced.

        H atoms   __ O atoms  à   __ H atoms   __ O atoms

    2 H2O → 2 H2  +  O2

  • Balance the following Chemical Reactions

    __Sn    +    __O2                       __SnO

    Balance the following Chemical Reactions

    __MgCl2             __Mg   +      __Cl2

  • Balance the following Chemical Reactions

    __KNO3                  __KNO2   +      __O2

        __Ca3(PO4)2   +  __ H2SO4          →     __ CaSO4   + __ Ca(H2PO4)2

         __CH4 +   __O2                    __CO2  +   __H2O

Jan 18 - 9:02 AM SMART Board or AirLiner Lesson Lesson Title: Balancing Equations Subject(s) Area: Chemistry / Physical Science State Standards and Indicators: 1. ▲ understands a chemical reaction occurs when one or more substances (reactants) react to form a different chemical substance(s) (products). There are different types of chemical reactions all of which demonstrate the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy. 1a. Chemical reactions are written as balanced chemical equations. In ordinary chemical reactions, the number and kind of atoms must be conserved. b. Examples of chemical reactions are synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single and double replacement, acid/base, and oxidation/reduction. Activity Instructions: Review types of equations and balancing equations by using the hyperlinks on the first page of the notebook lesson. On subsequent pages identify the type of equation, balance the molecules by cloning the objects and then write a final balanced equation, also practice naming compounds by saying them out loud in class and then use the sound link on each molecule. On the last slide is a brain buster hyperlink to try and balance more equations. Grade Levels: 9-12 Created by : Beth McKee School Name: East HIgh School
