Project Worksheet

Some college students develop work related skills through class projects. You may find it helpful to include some of the projects you worked on during your college career on your resume. This may also help you during the interview process, so even if you find you have enough for your resume go ahead and write some ideas down.

Locked Door Exercise

This is really the most difficult part of resume writing. Although evaluating your work values and skills is critical, the real homework begins now. For this step you must find a quiet place (no phone, no TV, and no friends or family). Have a legal pad and a pen with you. You now need to start reviewing your life from a work perspective. Using the skills inventory worksheet as a guideline, start by evaluating your first work experience (paid or unpaid). If you have been out of high school for quite a number of years, go back no more than 15 years, or your first job out of college. If you are a recent high school graduate, review only those experiences since high school. There are of course, exceptions to this. Some of you may need to go back more than 15 years. Others of you may have done something mind-boggling in high school. However, be honest with yourself. Don’t go back to the point of irrelevancy (e.g. those 8th grade baby sitting jobs). Answer all questions on the worksheet. Do this for each of your experiences. Go into minute detail. Remember, these should include both paid and unpaid positions. You may never have gotten paid for some of your most rewarding experiences.

12

Name of the class:Project title:Goal of the project:Group or individual project:Your responsibilities to the project:

Skills that you utilized for completing this project:

If a group project, did all members participate fully?Did you have to present this project to your class?Final grade for this project:

Do this for all of your major related projects. Use additional sheets of paper if necessary. The more you brainstorm in this exercise, the better.

On-Line Career PortfolioThe On-line Career Portfolio (OLCP) is a career development tool. Through recording your experiences, it allows you to recognize the skills you have and what skills you need to develop. The skills listed are the skills employers have required of recent college graduates; leadership, communication, organizational, problem solving, teamwork, creativity, and technical.

By using the OLCP, you begin to understand how your experiences both in and out of the classroom are preparing you for a successful career. For example, instead of just noting that you were a camp counselor this past summer, you will be able to note that you developed leadership skills by supervising 10 eight year olds and you used your creative skills to keep them focused! The OLCP is not a journal or diary. You do not need to enter every class or experience you have had in your life. Instead, enter only experiences from which you feel you have gained important skills that can be documented. Your portfolio will only be as valuable as the information you enter.

To create your On-line Career Portfolio, simply go to the Career Services website (http://careerctr.kennesaw.edu) and click the Online Career Portfolio link under the “Students” tab. The “Welcome” page will give you access to the online student manual. You can also come by the Career Services Center to receive individual assistance.

Combining it all

Now that you have examined your values and skills, you need to see how they relate to a career objective. This step requires a close look at the career you have chosen. Does this career have traits that match your values and skills? If the career you have chosen has traits that only match two of your top five values, maybe you need to re-think your career objective. 13

worksheet

- Organization: _____________- Position Held (e.g. manager, volunteer):_____________- Dates Position Held:_____________- What did I do in a typical day (be detailed):_____________- More details:_____________

Ask yourself the following questions about each question:

1) DID I OBTAIN ANY PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE?2) DID I TRAIN ANY NEW EMPLOYEES?3) DID I EVER SUPERVISE WHEN THE BOSS WAS AWAY?4) HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE I SUPERVISED IN THIS POSITION?5) DID I HAVE TO INTERACT WITH CUSTOMERS? WHAT WERE THEY LIKE? (e.g. doctors, factory workers, the public, children)6) DID I EVER HAVE TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS?7) WHAT RESULTS CAN I POINT TO (e.g. sales quotas, employee of the month, one of the five selected, etc.)?8) WHAT SKILLS DID I LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE (e.g. leadership, organizational, communicative, etc.)? 9) HOW DID I MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Editing your worksheet

After you have completed the locked door exercise, you must edit it. Never throw the worksheet away. It will be your aid for as long as you need to write a resume. In today’s market, a resume should be as targeted as possible. That may mean that every time you apply for a specific job, you may need to rewrite your resume. As a result, keep this worksheet to refer back to when rewriting.

To decide what you need from your worksheet, you will have to do several things. First, go back to your career objective. Reread it. Then go down your list of experiences and ask yourself two questions: 1. Does this experience qualify me for my career objective? 2. Does this experience account for a long span of time (e.g., one year or more)?

If you answered “yes” to either of those two questions, you will put that experience in your resume. If you answered “no”, leave it out. Know that what you answer “yes” or “no” to will varydepending on how many different career objectives you have. That is why most individuals have more than one resume. After choosing what experiences you will include in your resume, you now need to rewrite the duties and achievements under each experience. List your duties and achievements in the order of importance to your career objective. Most of us list these as they come to mind or in order of importance to that job. Remember, this is a sales tool, not an autobiography.

An effective resume should:

1. Include your complete address, phone number, and email address so that the employer can easily reach you. Keep all information current.

2. Be no more than two pages in length. One page is preferred and required in most business professions. If you have a second page, be sure your name is at the top of the second page.

3. Look organized; have balanced and centered text.4. Be printed on white or off-white quality paper rather than unusual-colored paper.5. Be concise and easy to read. Content should be related to your job objective. Ask yourself, “Will the fact

that I’ve done this help me get the job?”6. Be consistent in display techniques, punctuation and verb tense.7. Accurately state your abilities. Don’t undersell yourself, but don’t oversell either. Keep perspective and show

your capacity to implement your skills.8. Avoid abbreviations unless they are industry specific.9. Use phrases and splinter sentences to highlight items.10. Use action verbs.11. Avoid varied fonts and underlines when sending an email resume; keep it simple.12. Quantify successes (i.e. surpassed sales quota by 20 percent).13. Utilize font types that are clean and easy to read (e.g., Arial, Garamond, Times New Roman, Verdana). Preferred font size is 12pt. Go no smaller than 10pt font.14. Use resume templates with caution.

WHAT IS A CV?

The term “curriculum vitae” comes from the Latin Curriculum (course) and Vitae (life): The course of ones life. “It is vitae (not vita) because “life” in the phrase “course of life” ... is in the genitive singular....” - Eric Daniels, CVtips.com.

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) resembles a resume in many ways, but is more specifically focused on academic achievements. A CV summarizes educational and academic history and may include details about teaching experience, publications (books, articles, research papers, unpublished manuscripts, or book chapters), and academic honors and awards. Use a CV rather than a resume for teaching or research opportunities, applying for fellowships or for further academic training. Some research positions in industry may also prefer a CV rather than a resume. CVs are frequently longer than resumes, since the emphasis is on completeness rather than brevity. While there is no single correct format or style for writing a CV, the following types of information are generally included, and typically organized in this way:

Additional Tips:

• Fields of interest or Teaching Competencies: CVs may begin with a short section specifying Fields of Interest or Teaching Competencies (instead of a statement of Professional Objective with which resumes may begin). If you do include this optional section, make your categories as broad as possible to cover a variety of potential opportunities, but don’t be so broad that you appear unfocused.

• Teaching and research Experience: On a CV it is appropriate to describe both teaching and research experience in detail (on a resume this is usually not appropriate). If applying for a position that primarily involves research, describe research experience first, if the reverse is true, put teaching experience first.

• Work Experience: Work experience not directly relevant to research/teaching/academic opportunities should be omitted or described only briefly on a CV.

• Other: This may include miscellaneous personal information such as membership in professional or scholarly associations, travel or study abroad, or personal interests. Include only if you feel that some aspects of your personal history may be relevant and of potential interest to your readers.

• references: If you list references, provide title, university affiliation, and phone number.

Page 24: Writing your Resume, CV and References - The Career Services

• Your Dissertation: • If you are working on or have recently finished your doctoral degree, at least include a brief, clear summary of your thesis topic in the Education section. • Including a separate one- or two- page abstract of your thesis at the end of your resume is recommended, but optional. In this attachment, concisely summarize your thesis work, placing it within its scholarly context and noting its contribution to the field. Your summary should be comprehensible to people outside your field, but scholarly enough to interest people within your area of expertise. Looking at theses on related topics, in the Rotch or Dewey Library, may help you write yours. If you do provide an abstract, write “(See Abstract Attached)” in the Education section of your CV, after the name of your thesis title.• Cover Letter: A CV should always be accompanied by a cover letter.

Carefully choose job references that complement your resume. A good reference should be someone who confirms the details of your resume and offers positive feedback regarding your work or educational skills and experience. Ideally, they should have known you for at least one year—preferably three. Your list of references should include 3-5 of the following:• Former and/or current supervisors• Colleagues and/or subordinates• Former customers/clients• Former professors• Contacts from volunteer work or student organizations

References should not be included in your actual resume. Instead, include them on a separate sheet. Do not submit references to employers unless they have been requested.

1. Call your references and ask them if they are willing to provide favorable feedback to an employer on your behalf. As an additional courtesy, offer them an update on your career.

2. Let your references know every time you give out their contact information, and thank them for their efforts.3. Keep your references informed of your career and educational progress and future aspirations. They will be more

inclined to see you in a stronger light as you progress.4. Note that spending time communicating with your prospective employer takes valuable time from your

references’ workdays. If you plan to use these references over the years, you need to give something back. For instance, each time your reference supports you with a new prospective employer, send them a personal thank you letter or (at a minimum) an email.

5. If you obtain the new position, call or email your references and thank them again for their support. Also, let them know your new contact information.

How to List References:References should be put on a separate sheet of paper not attached to the resume document itself. The suggested format is below:

EXAMPLE:References for Joe Intern

Stephen Jackson, Manager Known for four yearsXYZ Comapny Former supervisor at ABC, Inc.100 Chastain Rd. Kennesaw, GA 30144 (770) [email protected]
