NewWoodridge housing complexto feature affordable living for seniors
By LEE V. [email protected]
WOODRIDGE – The first of its kindin Woodridge, an affordable housingcomplex designated specifically for se-niors 62 and older is slated to be com-pleted in the summer of 2016.
The $20 million developmentknown as the Woodridge HorizonSenior Living Community will in-clude 91 affordable units and twomarket-rate apartments. Plans forthe development have already beenapproved by the Woodridge VillageBoard of Trustees.
The senior living community hasbeen in the works for quite sometime, said Michael Mays, director ofcommunity development for the vil-lage.
“So for really the better part of 10to 15 years we have been hearing fromresidents that they would like to havesenior housing in the community,” hesaid.
This request also coincided with an-other village board objective to encour-age reinvestment in the James Avenuecorridor, Mays said.
Following a senior housing work-shop in 2008, Mays said Woodridge en-tered into a development agreementwith the existing owner of an apart-ment complex at 8099 James Ave., thesite of the planned senior housing de-velopment.
The village purchased the 3.4-acresite from the apartment complex own-
er, demolished the apartment build-ings and issued a request for quotes in2012 looking to develop the area specif-ically for senior housing.
The Alden Foundation, a nonprofithealth care and senior living provider, was selected by the village board to de-velop the site.
The village has agreed to sell theland to Alden for $300,000, Mays said.
“[The village] discounted the valueof the land for us so we could keep itaffordable for the residents,” said BethDemes, executive director of the AldenFoundation.
About half of the financing for themultimillion-dollar project will comefrom low-income housing tax creditsfrom the Illinois Housing Develop-ment Authority, Demes said. Otherfinancing sources include fundingfrom the HOME program in DuPage
County, a Federal Home Loan Bankof Chicago grant and a state energygrant from the Illinois Department ofCommerce and Economic Opportuni-ty.
“There is a huge need for afford-able senior housing,” Demes said.“The village had a waiting list ofabout 200 people before we even en-tered into the redevelopment agree-ment with them.”
Demes added that the Alden Foun-dation continues to get calls every dayabout the project.
Although the units are open to all,Woodridge residents and relatives ofWoodridge residents will receive pref-erence, she said.
“I think the request [for afford-able senior housing] from our resi-dents was based on a feeling that theydidn’t want to leave the community,”Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunning-ham-Picek said.
Demes said developments like theone planned in Woodridge enableseniors who have lived in a commu-nity for many years to remain therewhile giving up the burden of owninga home.
Most of the seniors who live in Al-den’s nine developments across theChicago region are living on fixed in-comes, she said, creating a need for af-fordable housing.
Units in the planned developmentwill be set aside for different incomelevels, and rent for each affordable unitwill be restricted based on a formulaset by the Illinois Housing Develop-ment Authority, Demes said.
Although it will include both one-and two-bedroom units, the develop-ment will be a far cry from a typicalapartment building, she said.
Among other amenities, the com-plex will include a community room, outdoor patio with a grill, media room, exercise room, library and computerlab with free Internet access for all res-idents, Demes said.
Construction is expected to beginin April and last about 14 months, shesaid.
“To be able to develop this livingcommunity is very, very wonderful,”Cunningham-Picek said. “I feel so priv-ileged we are able to do this.”
“There is a huge needfor affordable senior housing. The village had a waiting list of
about 200 people beforewe even entered into
the redevelopment agreementwith them.”Beth Demes

Area suburbs see 19 inches of snowfall over weekendSUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA
February came in with a bang thisweekend, bringing with it about 19inches of snow.
While Woodridge Public Workscrews battled the snow, local schools, including Woodridge School District68 and Community High School Dis-trict 99, closed for a snow day Mon-day.
Snow began falling Saturday eve-ning and continued through late Sun-day night. Ricky Castro, a meteorolo-gist with the National Weather Servicein Chicago, said the snowfall totals forDuPage County surpassed 1 foot.
“Some of the high amounts we’reseeing over the two days is 15 to 19inches,” he said.Winfield had the high-est recorded snow in the county at 19.2inches.
Woodridge’s Public Works Depart-ment began plowing in 12-hour shiftswhen the snow began Saturday, ac-cording to the village’s website.
The village’s snow removal planfocused on opening up the arterialand primary streets first to accommo-date the largest number of travelersas early as possible and then movingto the secondary streets, the websitestated. Plows passed through eachcourt and cul-de-sac to open them upwhile the other larger streets werebeing cleared to provide some relief
before plows could come back andcomplete those neighborhood road-ways.
Because of the severe weather, Mon-day garbage collection was delayed un-til Tuesday, pushing collection for therest of the week back a day, accordingto the website.
Castro said the high amount of snowis a result of an “unseasonably highamount of moisture” being carriedfrom the tropics of the Pacific Ocean. That, combined with the fact the sys-tem was slow moving and the weather
was cold enough for snow, resulted inthe large snowfall.
According to the National WeatherService, Chicago O’Hare InternationalAirport had 19.3 inches of snow, whichset the record for the snowiest day inFebruary. That ranks as the fifth-larg-est snow storm in Chicago’s history.
Castro said the whole system haspassed, and there are no signs of addi-tional significant snowfall.
“It doesn’t look like anything signif-icant in the next seven to 10 days, sofar,” he said.

D-99 adopts 1:1 Learning for 2015-16 school yearBy KELLI MURRAY
DOWNERS GROVE – Students inCommunity High School District 99will be issued Chromebooks in the2015-16 school year, thanks to theBoard of Education’s recent approvalof a 1:1 Learning technology fee.
The 1:1 Learning program provideseach student with one digital device,in this case the Chromebook. About5,000 students at North and South highschools will be issued a Chromebook inthe fall of 2015 that will ensure studentshave access to instruction and digitalcontent inside and outside of school, according to the district.
The 1:1 Learning technology fee isnot expected to exceed $100, which willhelp supplement a portion of the cost,Superintendent Mark McDonald said.Although the final figure to purchasenearly 5,000 Chromebooks has not yetbeen determined, McDonald said thepilot program cost about $500,000.
Chromebook laptops sold throughretail outlets to the public typicallysell for $200 to $400, much cheaper thanmost traditional computers. They alsohave a limited feature set compared totraditional computers.
“This is an opportunity for all stu-
dents to have access to the Internet,”McDonald said. “It has expanded theopportunity for creativity, sharinginformation, engaging and followingone’s curiosity.”
McDonald said there are huge en-hancements to education Chrome-
books provide.“One is to connect with students in
class and outside of class with resourc-es,” McDonald said. “A teacher canidentify links to read and enhance [stu-dents’] work. You tremendously expandthe amount of resources for a student.”
Chromebooks primarily functionthrough the Internet and run the Goo-gle Chrome browser, said Rod Rus-seau, director of technology. Just likewith all the computers with the schooldistrict, there is an Internet filter thatwill block certain sites, and therewill be no exception with the mobileChromebooks, he said.
“With the Internet filter, no matterwhere the students are, the first stopis through the school portal,” Russeausaid.
In 2011, District 99 made a decisionto install wireless Internet accessthroughout both North and South highschools in preparation for 1:1 Learning.
A small pilot program kicked induring the 2013-14 school year to about200 students and a few teachers, ac-cording to Gina Ziccardi, assistantsuperintendent for student learning. That program was so successful thatthe program was expanded to 1,450 stu-dents the following year.
“We made sure we had multiple de-partments included and multiple gradelevels of students included,” Ziccardisaid. “We had a few parent nights inDecember, and most parents were verypositive about the program.”

GLEN ELLYN – The Col-lege of DuPage Board ofTrustees’ recent decision togrant school President RobertBreuder $762,000 in severancehas caused public outcry andlegislative action in DuPageCounty and across Illinois.
An estimated 400 membersof the public attended a spe-cial board meeting Jan. 28 toair their grievances about thebuyout.
The board voted – for thesecond time – to approve theseverance for Breuder’s re-tirement. Trustees voted 6-1 infavor of the buyout, with ViceChairwoman Kathy Hamiltonas the lone dissenter.
The Jan. 28 meeting wasthe board’s second in less thana week to discuss the retire-ment package, and was calledto clarify a procedural motionregarding whether the boardshould have formally closeddebate before voting on theseverance during the firstmeeting Jan. 22.
In the end, the vote remainedthe same, with trustees approv-ing an addendum to Breuder’scontract allowing him to retireMarch 31, 2016 – three years ear-lier than anticipated.
In addition, Breuder willreceive a $762,867.77 lump sumpayment, according to the
board-approved contract pro-visions. The college also willname its newHomeland Securi-ty Education Center after him.
Trustees indicated theirhands were tied on the buy-out because of how previousboards had structured Breud-er’s contract.
“In an ideal world, wewouldn’t have severance pack-ages. But we do have a con-tract that, if we end the con-tract, we owe him the balanceof the contract,” said TrusteeKim Savage.
Chairwoman Erin Birt saidthe board quantified 1.5 years
of Breuder’s salary and bene-fits when coming to an agree-ment on the amount of moneyfor the severance pay.
“I think every single personaround this table worked veryhard at this,” Birt said.
That didn’t stop the publicfrom attending the meetingin droves to voice their disap-proval. In all, about 400 peoplecame, with 75 speaking during

Thepenalty is based on your adjusted gross income andgets added to the tax you pay.If your answer is YES and you bought yourinsurance through a health exchange, you willreceive a Form 1095-A. This form wills howwhen you were covered, who was covered, andwhether you got an advance credit to help youpay the premiums. BONES OF THE MOUTHQ: What are the bones that make up the mouth?A: Five major bones make up the structure ofthe mouth. They are the mandible, which is thelower jawbone; the maxilla, the two bones of theupper jaw, and two bones called palatal bonesthat form the roof of the mouth. The mandible, an arch-shaped bone, is thestrongest, thickest bone in your skull. Themandible, in fact, is the only bone that moveswhen you open and close your mouth. It pivotson rounded knobs called “condyles”. Thecondyles pivot and slide at what are called the“temporomandibular joints”, also called TMJs.(You may have heard of TMJ syndrome, which isa condition that can develop with those joints.)The two bones of the upper jaw extend upwardand backward from the teeth to the bases of thecheek and nose bones. Like other bones in thecranium, or the skull, a thin line of connectivetissue called a “suture” joins the two palatalbones. As with many other parts of the body, the suture is flexible and easily stretched duringinfancy and childhood. It becomes more rigidwith age. This is a fact that figures prominently inorthodontic treatment.Talk with your dentist about the underlyingstructure of your mouth and about steps you cantake to keep all of them healthy and functioningthe way they ought to.

A parent survey was sent out whichalso returned with positive feedback, she said.
Students will be issued the Chrome-books in the same manner as text-books, and students will be expectedto bring them to school fully chargeddaily. The teaching staff uses laptopsbut can interact with students usingthe Chromebooks in a variety of ways.
“One teacher has started a paper-less classroom,” Ziccardi said. Theteacher creates documents that are
published online through Google Docs, where students can access and shareinformation, she said.
In another example, aNorthHighEn-glish teacher was traveling to a confer-ence where he was presenting, and eventhough a substitute teacher was in theclassroom, the teacher was able to hostan online discussion with the studentswhile he was in the airport, she said.
“If they did not have the Chrome-books, that could not have happened,”Ziccardi said.
Ziccardi said the enhanced learningpossibilities will only help the studentsas they move beyond the high schoolclassroom.

When it comes to health and overall lifespan – the news isnot good for men. Women live longer by five years on average. All but one of the top 10 causes of male death claim proportion-ately more men’s lives than women’s at all ages. Meanwhile, women are twice as likely to see a doctor each year and spendmore time discussing theirhealth during those visits.
In a recent study, morethan half of the men hadn’thad a physical exam in thepast year and one in four mensaid they would wait as longas possible before seekinghelp if he was concernedabout his health.
But not seeking help forlife or health issues can leadto chronic disease and death.Of the top 10 killers of men, many – such as heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmo-nary disease, diabetes andliver disease and cirrhosis –are preventable.
Many conditions might nothurt or show symptoms untilan advanced stage. Some maynot have any warning signs at all. But regular checkups andscreenings can detect symptoms far earlier than anyone elsecan.
Especially if you’re younger than 50, you can prevent anddeter major health problems with routine care such as regularphysical exams and blood-pressure readings, a cholesterolcheck every five years, and routine skin and testicular cancerscreenings.
Starting at age 40, get a routine electrocardiogram. In your50s, add a colonoscopy, antigen screen and digital rectal examfor prostate cancer.
Whether it’s that nagging pain or numbness you’ve beenignoring, or regular exams or tests you haven’t had for years, see your physician and tell him what’s on your mind. It couldadd years to your life.

OUR VIEW
In a state with budgets in disarray, withthe biggest pension crisis in the nation, withone governor in prison for corruption and an-other just recently released, it’s pretty toughto stomach Robert Breuder’s $760,000 payoffto retire early as College of DuPage president.
At $142 per credit hour, a full-time studentat College of DuPage taking 15 credit hoursof classes can expect to pay $6,390 in tuitionand fees alone. So Breuder’s windfall couldpay for 118 students to go to school for a year, tuition free.
Beyond the money itself, there’s the prob-lem of what it represents. With this deal, which the College of DuPage trustees have ap-proved twice now, Breuder gets to walk awayfrom this job proud of all his achievements, convinced his tenure was a magnificent suc-cess, marred only by some meaningless un-pleasantness at the very end.
Oh, and he gets a building named afterhim.
But what we don’t know is how many ofthose achievements and grand successes areempty. Breuder’s surprise retirement hascome on the heels of the release of an emailthat showed the kind of dirty politics he’s ca-pable of. He’s been exposed as just anotherIllinois charlatan, the kind of leader who hasno qualms about pointing one way and thenrunning the other.
Breuder’s email to the board, which leakedin July, shows him proposing to deceive thestate by making a planned project more polit-ically attractive in order to wrangle $20 mil-lion in funding that the college was owed.
In the email, Breuder expressed frustra-tion over dealing with the governor’s officeto free up the $20 million and said he wantedthe board to convey the need for a teachingand learning facility as a means to obtain themoney.
“I have no problem with [board memberscommenting on the need for a facility]; how-
ever, not being able to say how we would usethe state’smoney (perhaps no real need) couldlessen our chances to break the money looseat this time (the political moon is rising),”Breuder said in the email. “A building thatfocuses on teaching and learning is politicallyattractive; more so than let’s say a studentcenter, PE facility, etc.”
Breuder also suggested getting the fundingfrom the state and coming up with a plan ofhow to spend it at a later date.
“There is also the option of telling the Gov-ernor we want the money, will bank it untilwe figure out how to use it and then buildingsomething,” Breuder said in the email. “Bot-tom line: I need some room to breathe on thismatter so I can enhance the likelihood we getthe $20 million soon.”
The Chicago suburbs have seen somethinglike this play out before. It was only in 2009that McHenry County College up in CrystalLake told their president, Walt Packard, thathis services were no longer needed. They de-cided they couldn’t fire him, though, and gavehim another $200,000, plus benefits, for histrouble.
Looking further downstate, when Univer-sity of Illinois President Michael Hogan wasfired in 2012 after just 20 months on the job –after succeeding another fired president – hewas awarded a one-year, $285,100 “sabbatical”before he then returned as a history profes-sor.
Then these “leaders” go on to collect exor-bitant pensions on top of the one-time pilesof cash.
As Illinois residents, as taxpayers in DuP-age County, we can have no tolerance forthese kinds of shenanigans anymore. Wedon’t want to hear that this is how things getdone. Somehow, other states manage to getthings accomplished without constantly re-sorting to dirty dealing.
These payouts for failure have to stop.
Breuder’s windfall part of apattern of poor leadership
Of the top 10 killers ofmen, many – such asheart disease, chronicobstructive pulmonarydisease, diabetes andliver disease and cirrhosis– are preventable.

SOUND OFFPronunciation tip
This is the first annual reminder that weare now in the month of Fe-“bru”-ary, notFe-“byu”-ary.
Save historic Edwards houseThe people of Downers Grove need to
advocate for the historic Edwards Houseat 942 Maple Ave. We will soon lose thisbeautiful house to the wrecking ball.Five members of the Village Council willnot listen to the majority of the peoplein Downers Grove that want to savethis house. The opportunity to move thehouse was given but five council mem-bers choose not to listen. They chose tolisten to a citizen [who] gave false factsabout the trees on Maple. April 7 is Elec-tion Day. We need to have a council thatrepresents the majority. Email the councilto voice your opinion, or it’ll be too lateto save this beautiful historic house.
Accomplishmentsdo not trump errors
COD trustees listed accomplishmentsby [Robert] Breuder and claimed thepayout is justified. Consider this: Dr.Taub, director of the Columbia UniversityMesothelioma Center, has been passion-ate in raising money for research andpatient care of those inflicted by thisawful form of cancer. This month, N.Y.Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver wasfound guilty of various charges includ-ing engaging in a sweetheart deal withTaub. Dr. Taub referred patients to Sil-ver’s private law firm and in turn, Silverallotted public money in form of grantsto the Mesothelioma Center. I suppose, though, this is where Illinois and NewYork diverge. The university immediatelyfired Dr. Taub and Silver resigned. InIllinois, you get a building named afteryou and you walk away with $762,000.Where is Lisa Madigan?
COD needs a new lawyerIn regards to the College of DuPage’s
buyout of the president, I worked at acommunity college for more than 20years and I’ve lived in the College ofDuPage district for more than 38 years.I think where the big problem is, is thelawyers for the College of DuPage shouldhave been more astute and could haveprevented a problem with the OpenMeetings Act. What needs to be doneis that the college needs to get a newlawyer.
Signs at college too gaudyCollege of DuPage should not erect a
sign in honor of the much reviled Robert
Breuder. COD already has way too manygaudy white building signs that look likeadvertising for fast food joints, not aninstitution of higher learning. But thosewere [Robert] Breuder’s idea, too.
Downers Grove SouthHigh School deserves a sign, too
Every time I drive by Downers GroveNorth, I can’t help but see the beautifulbrick framed sign in front of the school. It is probably 10 feet off the street. Itannounces performances and studentand faculty achievements. …. Whereis the sign for Downers Grove South? Why hasn’t it been replaced? What hasit been, four years since it was sup-posedly damaged by the tornado thatwent through the area. … We are proudof our high school and miss seeing theachievements shouted loud and proud on63rd Street so all can see them. Why isDowners South always treated differentlythan Downers North?
Change color of squad carsLately, I have become aware of Down-
ers Grove and DuPage County Sheriffcars in black. This color is intimidating. As a taxpayer, I would appreciate it if thisblack color was replaced by a more op-timistic color: like green, orange, white.Anything but black with dark tinted win-dows and excessive lighting. The lightsare definitely way over the line. I amreferring to the lights they turn on whenthey are pulling someone over. There aredangerous criminals out there, but comeon police, most of us are law-abiding.Isn’t a gun intimidating enough?

a public comment session thatran more than three hours.
Adam Andrzejewski –founder of Elmhurst-basedwatchdog group For TheGood of Illinois, which hasbeen working to make detailsof Breuder’s contract public –said the board violated statelaw by not providing contractspecifics to taxpayers prior tovoting Jan. 22.
“This board admits that itsecretly negotiated Dr. Breud-er’s severance agreement fornine months, then didn’t re-cite the details into the recordbefore last Thursday’s publicvote,” he said. “That violatedthe OpenMeetings Act.”
Andrzejewski and EdgarCounty Watchdogs have filedsuit against the college for thealleged violation.
DuPage County residentRichard Skoda echoed thestatements of many that thepublic had lost respect for theboard’s trustees.
“We should not be askingDr. Breuder to resign. Weshould be asking them to re-sign,” he said.
Mary Kranz, a former trust-ee at the college who servedfrom 1995 to 2001, urged theboard not to vote for the sev-erance pay because of what itwould do to the community.
“The taxpayers of DuPageCounty cannot afford this taxburden,” she said.
West Chicago residentLouise Handel, who is analumna of the college, saidshe didn’t like that the trust-ees shifted the blame.
“I’mkindof offendedand in-sultedwhen I hear boardmem-bers blame previous boards,”she said. “You don’t just get tosay, ‘Pass, that wasn’t me.’”
State legislators even tooktime to address the trustees.Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Whea-ton, told the board politiciansin Springfield are alreadytalking about what’s going onat the college.
“What you have done as aboard contributes to the badreputation Illinois has withcorruption,” she said.
After the board’s meetingJan. 22, Ives announced shewould ask the state AuditorGeneral to audit the state fund-ing the college has receivedduring the last three fiscalyears. She said she wouldn’thesitate pulling $762,000 from
the college’s state funding as aresult of Breuder’s buyout.
“I went out on a limb. I de-fended the College of DuPagein the spring session,” Ivessaid. “Now how can I go backand tell those people we needmoremoney from the state?”
Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lom-bard, also criticized the boardfor the amount of the sever-ance payment.
“This is outrageous. Thereis no precedent for this in acommunity college setting inIllinois,” Breen said. “I hateto say this, but this board hasbetrayed the trust of this com-munity.”
Breen announced Mondayhe would introduce legisla-tion called the Breuder Rule, which would ban excessiveseverance packages for em-ployees of public institutions.
“Too many so-called ‘pub-lic servants’ are getting rich atthe expense of the taxpayers, and the ‘Breuder Rule’ willprevent this going forward,”Breen said in a news release.
Breen’s legislation wouldalso forbid community collegeboards from raising propertytaxes, tuition or fees after anexcessive severance payout, which he defined as anythinggreater than one year’s salaryand benefits.
Breuder refused to com-ment on his retirement and theproceedings surrounding it.
Several members of thepublic were upset Breuderwould be the Homeland Secu-rity Education Center’s name-sake, a decision the board vot-ed in favor of inMay 2013.
Area residents urged theboard to reconsider, andname it after Staff Sgt. RobertMiller, a Wheaton residentwho fought in Afghanistanand died protecting his fellowsoldiers. He received theMed-al of Honor in 2008.
Kirk Allen, of Edgar Coun-ty Watchdogs, said Millerwould be a much more ap-propriate choice because he“paid the ultimate sacrificefor our freedom.”
Controversy timeline
n JULY: An email from RobertBreuder to the Board ofTrustees leaked, addressing$20 million in state moneyfor demolition the college hadbeen promised in 2002, butnever obtained. In the email, Breuder suggest-ed finding options that wouldbe “politically attractive” tothe governor’s office, such asconstructing a teaching andlearning center, in an attemptto get the funding. The governor’s office respond-ed to the leaked email bysaying it would not providethe $20 million, but the boardvoted to move forward withbuilding the teaching andlearning center nonetheless.
n AUGUST: Following theemail’s release, ViceChairwoman Kathy Hamil-ton spoke to media outletsand addressed the board’saction regarding the center.Trustees voted 5-2 to censureHamilton for “inappropriateand embarrassing conduct”when she misled the publicabout the email, according tothe censure resolution.
n SEPTEMBER: The collegeFaculty Association voted noconfidence in Breuder, citing
the leaked email as thecenter of the decision.
n OCTOBER: Elmhurst-basedwatchdog group For TheGood of Illinois claimed thecollege was hiding $95 millionfrom trustees using imprestpayments, which are less than$15,000 and do not requireboard review. An audit by Crowe HorwathLLP gave the college a cleanbill of financial health. Theboard voted unanimously notto audit the imprest paymentsin November.
n DECEMBER: The board votedto approve an audit of thecollege radio station, despitethe school’s earlier acknowl-edgment of the potential thatfraud had taken place there ayear earlier. In a statement, the college de-nied any communication withElmhurst College about theCollege of DuPage’s formerradio engineer being convict-ed of theft while working atElmhurst College.
n JANUARY 2016: The boardvoted twice to approveamending Breuder’s contractto allow him to retire March31, 2016, and receive morethan $762,000 in severance.

VILLAGE ANNUAL REPORTMayor Tully will deliver the Annual Report at the Council meeting onFebruary 10, 2015. The report will highlight significant activities andaccomplishments of 2014.
WATER METER READING DEVICEPROJECT
The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing thetransmission units that send water meter readings from residentialand business customer meters to the Village for water billing. Theoriginal transmission units, known as MTUs, were installed in2002 and are beginning to fail. Nearly all of the 16,700 MTUs arelocated on the outside of customer homes or buildings.
The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove the existing MTUs and install the new ones at eachbuilding over the course of 2015. There will not be service orbilling disruptions when the units are replaced.
Water customers (residents and businesses) will be notified whenwork is planned to occur in their area. Scope will call customerstwice: two weeks prior to the scheduled replacement and two daysprior to the installation.
Most MTU replacementswill take less than 30minutes and will occurentirely on the exterior ofthe building, with the sameexterior placement as theexisting MTU. For locationswhere the MTU is inside a home or building, Scope will make anappointment with the customer to access the unit.
Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, torespond to inquiries from residents and businesses. Customers mayalso contact the Village with questions.

ProvisoWest snaps Trojans’ winning streakBy DAN SANTAROMITA
LA GRANGE – Riding an eight-game winning streak, spirits were highwithin the Downers Grove North boysbasketball team entering the weekend.
But back-to-back double-digit loss-es to conference opponents Friday andSaturday may have stopped the team’smomentum.
On Friday, Proviso West beat theTrojans 56-45. A day later, Lyons Town-ship knocked off DGN 63-41. Both Pro-viso West and LT completed seasonsweeps of the Trojans in West Subur-ban Silver action.
“We haven’t beaten anybody on theroad of this caliber, so we haven’t re-ally accomplished the things that wecould accomplish at the beginning of
the season,” coach Jim Thomas said.“We have to get better.”
The Trojans (12-7, 2-6 West SuburbanSilver) scored the first six points of the
game against Lyons Township, whichnow holds the lead in the conference, but gave up the next seven and trailed19-16 after a quarter. Jordon Kedrowskiscored 10 points in the quarter and fin-ished with a team-high 13 points.
The Lions closed the second quarteron a 10-2 run to take a 34-22 lead into half-time. LT expanded the lead to 21 points af-ter three quarters and never looked back.
The weekend results were a sharpchange from how the Trojans playedduring the winning streak, but part ofthat is because of stronger opposition.
“The competition has gotten a littlebetter,” Thomas said after the LT loss.“As you get back into conference forsure. These guys outclassed us.
“Double weekend on the road, [we]didn’t get the job done. By that stan-dard we’re not good enough. They’re
both teams in the sectional.”As DGN heads into the final month
of the regular season, the Trojans arehoping to play their best in the postsea-son. In the Aurora East sectional, DGNis grouped with five West SuburbanSilver opponents, district rival Down-ers Grove South, who the Trojans hostSaturday, and other quality teams likeWest Aurora and Benet.
The biggest disappointment fromthe weekend’s results was that theTrojans played both Proviso West andLyons Township closer in earlier meet-ings this season. Both of those losses inDecember were by seven points or less.
“We played poor defense,” Thom-as said. “We couldn’t guard their bestplayers again after they had 50 at ourplace, so we haven’t gotten much bettersince the last time we played them.”
