CarbonCritical Design™
C6
The transition to a low-carbon economy poses extraordinary challenges and opportunities. Our Carbon Critical Design programme is producing new ideas and ways of working. We are endeavouring to embed low-carbon design in all of our work as a fundamental design parameter.
Bahrain World Trade Center
Designed, engineered and project managed by Atkins, this is the world’s first commercial building to harness wind power for energy with large scale integrated turbines. Three, 29m diameter wind turbines generate up to 15% of the two towers’ electrical requirements.
Anaconda Wave Energy DeviceAtkins’ concept design for the 200 metre-long, rubber bodied Anaconda device provides a unique solution to capturing renewable energy from the ocean waves. Farms of 50 Anacondas could be capable of generating enough electricity to power 50,000 homes. The device has received backing from the UK’s Carbon Trust.
6 - Atkins Fact Book 2009
Carbon Tools DevelopmentAtkins invested £1m during 2008/09 to develop a suite of carbon calculators to assist in the design and engineering of low-carbon projects.
Northumbria University Sustainability was top of the agenda for every aspect our design for Northumbria University’s BREEAM Excellent rated City Campus East, which is 40% more efficient than comparable sites. The construction process ensured 95% of waste materials were recycled, while a green travel plan encourages students, staff and visitors to travel to and from the campus by sustainable means.
Dubai Metro Our designs for Dubai Metro’s walkways saved more than 500m³ of aluminium compared to conventional design, which equates to a saving of approximately 12,900 tonnes of CO². In turn, this will reduce the peak cooling load for air conditioning by around 35%.
