Letter from the Director of Education:

When I think of Water Street Studios two words–magic and serendipity–come to mind. Magic, meaning enchantment and the act of making something happen by supernatural force; and serendipity, the phenomenon of finding valuable or agreeable things not sought for. These two words played and continue to play a big part in my life at WSS. It was very serendipitous how I became involved with Water Street in the first place and very magical how we have evolved into the success story we are today.

It was at the Art In Your Eye festival three years ago that I came across the information booth for a new “Batavia art center”. I was leaving the art fair and for some unknown reason I decided to go back and chat with the people working the booth. I was curious to know if this new center had an arts education program. My previous job had been coordinating classes and assisting in the operations of a small art school and I saw great potential with this evolving center and volun-teered to be its first education director. It was all a very seren-dipitous moment of being in the right place at the right time.

Since that day our WSS School of Art has grown as if by magic. One classroom has evolved into three (children, adult and 3-D), 20 class offerings have doubled into 40 choices, and we’ve enrolled 1100 students thus far. We grew so fast some of you might think this has all been accomplished by magic and the swish of Harry Potter’s wand – Protego Totalum! But in reality it has taken hundreds of volunteer hours by me and many others to build our School of Art.

Despite the sometimes long days, I am so happy that I wandered through AIYE that August day and was asked to be a part of this magical place!

trying to understand them? But

in the case of a painting, people have to understand. – Pablo Picasso

We will discuss the visual elements, design principles, composition, content, style and symbolism used to create artworks and apply this knowledge when looking at an overview of the different time periods art has traveled to get to where it is now. □ Instructor Justine Kesich

“My son Jack just had a Harry Potter themed birthday party here with 10 of his friends, mostly 8-9 in age. They made Magic Model HP characters, got to tour the entire studio, and met a couple artists - one was a welder - boys dug that one of course as they all got to try on the welding face helmet. They had a ton of fun - thank you Kari Kraus for organizing and hosting the party. The kids had a blast and I had little to do but watch and enjoy!”

We have a variety of art projects that will really make your

birthday party something special. Parties for both kids and

adults alike! Projects include but are not limited to clay,

printmaking, jewelry, themed kids parties such as Star Wars,

Harry Potter, or Alice in Wonderland Tea Party, and much more!

“Abbey’s 11th birthday party was at WSS. She and about 10 of her friends (plus some grown-up friends and family) had a great time. The girls made paper beads, then strung beautiful bracelets. They were given a tour of the art studios where they were very excited to meet some real artists. It was cool for the guests and their parents to walk through and see the

gallery as they came for the party. It was easy working with Kari to plan the party. She was very flexible and accommodating. A great success!”

Host your next birthday at Water Street Studios.
