Welcome to Fraternity Fall Recruitment at WSUCongratulations on your decision to attend Washington State University! You have already displayed great decision-making skills by choosing to attend such a great institution. Another choice you will soon be faced with is choosing where you will spend your years at Washington State University. WSU offers many living opportunities: Residence Halls, apartments, independent housing, or Greek housing. Although each living situation offers its own unique experience, joining a fraternity will provide you with an outlet to touch all aspects of college life.

Joining a fraternity will provide many opportunities including leadership, scholarship, lifelong brotherhood, community service, and much more. Most men who have joined a fraternity will say it was the best decision they have ever made. Coming to WSU was your first great decision, choosing to join a fraternity will be the second in a long list of decisions you will make over the course of your college career.

The week of Recruitment is an experience that you need to go into with an open mind. You will see many chapters in a short period of time, and you will need to evaluate each chapter thoroughly to make the right choice in picking a fraternity chapter. Take every aspect of the Greek Community and compare the positives and negatives. We truly believe that you will find that joining a fraternity will be an experience you will not want to miss out on. The contents of this book are designed to provide you with some brief information about each chapter.

Please keep in mind that Recruitment Week is a dry event and therefore NO ALCOHOL/DRUGS will be permitted at any time. This is a zero tolerance policy and it will be strictly enforced.

We hope you are excited to begin this new phase in your life, and we look forward to meeting you.

Deloid Frizzell Comeran Tileh Director of Recruitment Executive Vice President Interfraternity Council Interfraternity Council (509) 335-5929 (509) 335-5929

Welcome from the CFSL! Welcome from the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life!

On behalf of the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life, we’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Washington State University! You have chosen a University with a strong scholastic foundation and a rich Greek tradition. The WSU Greek community is currently home to more than 2,700 students and is dedicated to honoring over a 100 years of history in high ideals, lifelong friendships, and providing a home away from home for WSU students. As you will come to discover through the recruitment process, the WSU Greek Community offers a variety of opportunities. The Office of Greek Life is extremely excited that you are interested in making Greek Life a part of your college experience.

During your first year at Washington State University, you will learn a great deal about yourself as you adjust to a new environment, overcome challenges, and reap the awards of being a Coug. As a member of a Greek chapter, you will have an opportunity to get involved in numerous campus activities and organizations while you pursue your educational goals. In other words, Greek Life will provide you with essential skills and opportunities to develop outside of the classroom. Greek organizations promote and provide academic support for their members, leadership development, an opportunity to develop life-long friendships, service to the community, intramural athletic competition and an opportunity to become highly involved here at the Washington State University.

It is important to note that your involvement in a Greek chapter will not only have an enormous impact on your college days but will forever connect you with the Greek community and a thriving network of leaders. Many of the friendships you will form with your brothers or sisters will become lifelong friendships. Participating in recruitment is a tremendous experience and will help you discover what Greek Life has to offer. You should expect to meet a lot of new people, make new friends, and get a head start on becoming acquainted with Washington State University. We encourage you to take your time and seriously evaluate what each chapter has to offer. Consider carefully all of your options; the commitment you are about to make is for lifetime membership. Every chapter at WSU has something wonderful to contribute to your life so it is important for you to consider your best fit in selecting a chapter to join.

Again, WELCOME to Washington State University and Recruitment, have a great time, remember to breath, and good luck to you! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns during the Recruitment process please do not hesitate to contact the Center for Fraternity and Sorority Life at (509) 335-5433.

Meet your Rho Chi (Recruitment Counselors)

A FRIEND Part of college life is making friends. During recruitment week your Rho Chi will become one of your most valuable friends. All 10 men have been trained to help guide you through this amazing week. Their number one goal is to make fraternity fall recruitment a positive experience for you.

A GUIDE During the course of the week, your Rho Chi will be disaffiliated with his fraternity, meaning he will not reveal to you which chapter he belongs to. He has your best interest at heart and should remain totally impartial.

A LIASON Your Rho Chi will hold meetings to help explain the recruitment process to you. He can and should provide time for one-on-one meetings so you have the opportunity to get any questions answered during the recruitment process.

Recruitment TipsRecruitment is a mutual selection process. The goal is to find the chapter where you have the strongest sense of belonging. This is a time to ask about the chapter’s scholarship program, its social aspects, house expenses, and brotherhood traditions.

TIPS• Washington State University has 25 fraternities, each with its own unique

personality. Make sure you spend time with as many chapters as possible.• Meet as many men from each fraternity as possible. • Act naturally. Every chapter looks for men who aren’t afraid to be themselves.• Don’t feel obligated to pledge/associate with a chapter just because they are

showing an interest in you. Find a chapter with people you feel comfortable being around.

• Have a good time! Meet a lot of new people and be open-minded.

4 5

ASK QUESTIONSBy asking questions during Recruitment you can receive a better understanding of what the chapters really have to offer.

Here are some examples of questions to ask:1. What kind of scholarship program do you have? What G.P.A. is required

for membership?2. What campus activities are members involved in?3. What do you enjoy most about being in this fraternity?4. What are your intramural programs like?5. What activities are the pledges/associates responsible for?6. What does your new membership program consist of and how long does it

last? How does the chapter feel about hazing?7. What are the costs?8. What is the chapter’s G.P.A.?

Recruitment RulesAt any time during fall recruitment, a fraternity may offer a potential new member a bid to join.

PNMs are expected at every program and convocation during Recruitment. The IFC Director of Recruitment may grant exceptions.

PNMs should stay on campus during fall recruitment. Only exception is for chapter activities that have been approved by the IFC Director of Recruitment.

All University and national chapter rules are to be followed.

Remember, Recruitment isALCOHOL & DRUG FREE!Please report any alcohol or drug violations to the IFC Director of Recruitment at 509-335-5929.

What is the cost? The costs of chapter maintenance, membership programming and social events make financial responsibility extremely important to each chapter. Costs of belonging to a fraternity vary from chapter to chapter. There is also first year or one-time costs, which make the first year of membership more expensive than subsequent years.

Many members will move into their sorority either second semester of their first year or their second year in the chapter. Please note each chapter sets its own criteria for live-in and live-out status.

The cost of living in the house varies from chapter to chapter and may include room and board, laundry, parking (for those with seniority), cable, phone service, computer lab usage, etc. When a member (regardless of year in the house) lives outside the house, she is responsible for paying a “live-out fee” which covers general use of the facilities as well as maintenance, meals eaten at the house and social dues.

Again, payment options vary by chapter, but most allow monthly or bi-annual payments for all fees.
