Saturday, Aug. 10 from 5:�0-7 p.m. with an encore Sunday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m.

Outside the Block Unleash your inner quilter! Local quilting experts Laurie Baker and Georgia Gingrich are inviting quilters to think beyond the pattern in their new special Outside the Block. More than just a quilting how-to, Outside the Block strives to give both beginning and experienced quilters the cre-ative tools they need to build a truly personalized masterpiece. “Other quilting programs deal more with how to make a specific project exactly as the designer made it,” says Laurie. “We’re concentrating on a basic quilt block, offering insights on how to change the pieces that make up the block and really make it your own.”

From fabric basics to cutting to the actual sewing, Georgia and Laurie share their wealth of experience with practical advice and engaging humor.

“We were taught in kindergarten to ‘color inside the lines,’” added Georgia. “Well, we’re encouraging quilters to explore beyond the lines and think outside the block.”

The new program, edited by WTVP Executive Producer William Baker with a set designed by Tracy Simmons, will premiere as part of a special broadcast event, live from the WTVP studio. What a difference a coat of paint makes.July marked the 10th year of operations at our State Street building in the Peoria Ware-house District. The occasion went largely unnoticed by a very busy staff, and only a few of us old timers paused to remember the transition from our previous digs at Bradley University to our own broadcast home.

The building is holding up remarkably well, but as you might suspect, there are the minor dings, dents and spills that serve to show that it is well used and well cared for by both staff and guests. The façade of the building is another story. Thanks to 10 years in the cold, blustery Illinois winters and blistery Illinois summers, scraping of the exposed steel and a new coat of paint became necessary. That work was done a few weeks ago, and the improvement was instantaneous. The building looks as good as new, and the change has even put a spring in the step of us veterans. Maybe next we’ll tackle the accumulation of papers and tapes that have amassed since we arrived. Then again, that may be a project for the next 10 years.

The peeling paint is not the only evidence of a decade on State Street. Since we arrived here our goal was to use the building and the facilities to better serve the community. We promised “More and Better”, and we have delivered. From a single analog channel, WTVP now provides three distinct programming services twenty four hours each

day…that’s more than 26,000 hours of programming annually. In addition, we offer Internet access via wtvp.org to all PBS programs and we archive most local productions for convenient replay, all at no cost to you. In addition, we created a special Illinois Adventure website and host special websites for the 50+ crowd (Next Avenue), and a special site for teachers, students, and home schoolers (PBS LearningMedia Illinois Edition), again, all at no charge.

Programming is what we do best. There have been several Ken Burns specials over the past ten years, outstanding children’s programming that is rated as the best in media, outstanding dramas like Down-ton Abbey, memorable concerts and specials, and we’ve made Wednesday the smartest night on television with NOvA and Nature.

The best part of the past 10 years is your continuing support. There is no varnish-ing the truth that without you none of the rest would have been possible. Thank you.

Jim Brickman’s ’70sRe-live the music that changed popular music and influenced one of our greatest contemporary songwriters—America’s romantic piano sensation Jim Brickman. In a star-studded musical event, Jim Brickman’s Celebration of the 70’s infuses romantic flavor with the timeless sounds that helped to shape music for the last four decades. The program premieres Friday, Aug. 9 from 9-10:�0 p.m.

In this new musical special, you’ll hear some of the biggest hits of the 70’s, played by the artists who made them famous. Mysterious LadiesReturning home on a train from vacation, beautiful young socialite Iris Carr (Tuppence Middleton) is befriended by an Englishwoman she knows only as “Miss Froy.” When Iris falls asleep, she awakens to find Miss Froy missing and her fellow pas-sengers denying she ever existed. Masterpiece Mystery! “The Lady vanishes” puts a new spin on this

familiar story in a new 90-minute mystery airing Sunday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. Adapted from Ethel Lina White’s 1936 novel The Wheel Spins—filmed by Alfred Hitchcock as The Lady Vanishes—this new production is set against the tense backdrop of the Balkans of the 1930s and deftly weaves together the stories of a colorful trainload of characters brought to life by a stellar interna-tional cast including Keeley Hawes, Tom Hughes and Gemma Jones.

Mystery! then turns to a modern, fast-paced legal drama following the conflicts, passions and intrigues of criminal law as rival barristers with very different work styles aspire to rise to the rank of Queen’s Counsel, also known as “taking Silk.” Starring Maxine Peake (“Little Dorrit”) as Martha Costello and Rupert Penry-Jones (“The 39 Steps”) as Clive Reader, Masterpiece Mystery! “Silk” premieres Sunday, Aug. �5 from 8-10 p.m. The series continues Sept. 1 and 8 from 8-10 p.m. each night.

The MarchJoin PBS for a special week of new and encore programs and online events celebrating the 50th anniver-sary of the historic 1963 March on Washington—a watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement that helped usher in sweeping civil rights legislation.

The centerpiece of the celebration is The March, a new documentary premiering tuesday, Aug. �7 at 8 p.m.—the eve of the 50th anniver-sary of the original event. The film reveals the dramatic story behind the event through the remembrances of key players such as Jack O’Dell, Clarence B. Jones, Julian Bond and Andrew Young. Supporters and other testimonials of the March include Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Roger Mudd, Peter Yarrow and Oprah Winfrey in addition to historians, journalists, authors and ordinary citizens who joined some 250,000 Americans who thronged to the capital on that momentous day.

Bookending this premiere will be en-core broadcasts of In performance at the White House “A Celebration of Music from the Civil rights Move-ment” at 7 p.m., and Independent Lens “The powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil rights” at 9 p.m. And WTVP offers a local per-spective with At Issue – Civil rights pilgrimage at 10 p.m. American Masters “James Baldwin: The price of the ticket” kicks off the special programming on Friday, Aug. �� at 8 p.m.

Local SpotlightIllinois AdventureExplore the Deere-Wiman House in Moline in a brand new Illinois Adventure premiering Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. Built in 1872 by Charles Deere, son of John Deere, the house was designed by Chicago

architect William LeBaron Jenny. Host Jim Wilhelm escorts viewers through the house and the history of its many renova-

tions and intriguing additions while sharing stories of four generations of the Deere family. The program also visits the DeMoulin Museum in Greenville to try out its treasure trove of antique initiation devices used to great amusement in lodge ceremonies. Then it’s off to Franklin Grove to the headquarters of the Lincoln Highway Association to learn about the historic road markers that still exist in

in history. This surprisingly beautiful region has seen the rise of civilizations, become home to three major religions, endured eternal conflict, yet continues to draw the attention and imagination of believers and historians the world over. WTVP Travels invites you on this once-in-a-lifetime journey this February during our nine-day land tour to see the relics of ancient civilizations and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Still undergoing careful restoration, the house is filled with unusual artifacts and interesting stories from Oglesby’s life as a U.S. Senator, Union General in the Civil War, three-term governor of Illinois, and close friend and colleague of Abraham Lincoln.

At Issue in BriefH Wayne Wilson continues exploring issues of interest to Central Illinois through At Issue in Brief. Look for these short news programs on air in between regularly scheduled programming this summer and online at wtvp.org.

Look for new segments this month in-cluding a three-part “Dig” series from the Emiquon Preserve discussing the Native American cultures that co-habited there more than 700 years ago and the artifacts they left behind. Dickson Mounds Museum Associate Curator Mike Conner and Michigan State University Anthropology Department Chair Jodie O’Gorman are featured.

And in “Hotel”, H looks at the newly opened Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette and the Courtyard Marriott Hotel that will open next summer and interviews hotel owner Gary Matthews, CEO of EM Properties, and Laura Lojas, General Manager of the Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette.

This month the Create schedule draws upon a total of 62 series, not including special Saturday and Sunday marathons which utilize additional programming resources. The schedule contains the following genres: crafting (including sewing, quilting, painting, scrap booking and home décor), cooking, travel, gardening, home improvement and woodworking. There are 12 crafting shows, 28 cooking series, 12 travel series, 4 gardening series, 3 home improvement series, and 3 woodworking series.

challenge to viewers—inviting you to create your own block and come share them at our “Block Party.” Tune in for details.

Outside the Block is the first foray into television for both ladies, but they are no strangers to the art of quilting. Georgia has taught quilt making, from beginners to ad-vanced classes, at Peoria-area shops and guilds for many years. In addition to teaching, she is past president of Gems of the Prairie Quilt Guild and in demand as a lecturer on various quilting topics. Laurie, co-author of Homestyle Quilts – Simple Patterns and Savory Recipes (with Kim Diehl), has spent the last 23 years as a technical editor and writer for the quilting, sewing and crafting industries. She has also had several of her own designs published, and she teaches and lectures whenever her schedule permits. She is currently the president of the Washington Squares Quilt Guild and incoming president of Gems of the Prairie.
