The Wupp team sends all its thoughts to the royal family and all the Cambodian people.

There are some tuk tuk drivers one is immediately drawn to for one reason or another, their humor, willingness to help, or overall kindness, Yim Touch holds all these qualities and more.

When driving around town with Yim, it’s likely that at some point in the night a mutual friend, coworker, or client will yell with delight “Hey! How’s it going Yim?” His comfort as a driver puts you at ease, his strong English and knowledge of the city makes navigating a simple task, and his willingness to let you choose the a fair price are all reasons to have him on speed dial. Yim’s family life is interesting and part of his driving business as well. Three of his brothers drive in the same area as he does and it’s not uncommon for Yim to send one of them to pick you up when requesting his services.

Like many other young adults, Yim enjoys going out on the weekend and sharing a few beers with buddies. In this case, he’ll be clear that he doesn’t want to drive for everyone’s safety and will help find you a different tuk-tuk. Throughout the years, he’s made such good friends with some of his customers that one couple has given him keys to their house in case he works extremely late and needs a room to sleep in! This rapport between his clients seems to transcend through time, as previous customers of his from years ago, Ron and Pam, taught him English and urged him to continue his education.

Although Yim thoroughly enjoys his time driving, mainly in the Tonle Bassac and BKK1 area, his life goal is to move back to the province to start his own farm and grow vegetables and work the land himself. Here’s to hoping one day we can all pop by Natural Garden and treat ourselves to some homegrown Yim food. Until then, give him a call and enjoy a ride around the city with one of the funnest drivers around.

The famous Blue Pumpkin treats Phnom Penh’s food loving residents to an all new location. Early to interview the owner of Le Marais, I spent my time rather hypnotised by the beautiful pieces waiting upon every rack to be admired. I tried to be discreet, but I’m sure the staff noticed me swoon as my fingers, so unaccustomed to finery after the months of shopping solely at psaars and Sakura, lingered on the delicate silks.

The luxurious dresses and blouses, shifts and skirts on display have all been imported from Paris and hand-picked so as to ensure only the best pieces from each brand are sent over. Few weeks ago, Pontoon was full. Why? Dj Cut Killer returned to the city to make its inhabitants set fire to the dance floor. The French/international Dj gave an exclusive interview to What’s Up Phnom Penh to tell us why he is back and what is in store for him in the future. Coming for the second time to Phnom Penh, thanks to CP5 Agency (an exclusive partner of Cut Killer in Cambodia) the Dj declares his love for the country and talks about career, music, P. DIDDY and the Cambodian Hip Hop scene.

You officially became the French hip-hop master 15 years ago as you were working on the radio. What are the big steps of your career? I started with the idea of bringing an urban sound (Hip Hop New Jack) that wasn’t really known at the end of the eighties, a big transitional period in the Hip Hop musical evolution. At that time the Djs were not in the spotlight and that’s why I started Dj’s DMC championships. I wanted to bring a new style, a name, my own universe.

Who are the ones that inspired you?A lot of artists really drive me through their creativity or the way they run their business : Dj Cash Money, DJ Jazzy Jeff, P. Diddy, Jay Z, David Guetta, Funk master Flex, Dj Premier, Just Blaze, etc....

What are your best and worst memories as a Dj?One of the best is the first time I played alone in front of 70, 000 people. The worst is when you play in front of hundreds of people and after 30 seconds of set the power shuts down and never comes back… It happened to me twice in my career!

What do you think about the growing Hip Hop scene in Cambodia?I like to check out and discover the culture and artists of the countries I go. For Cambodia, a friend made me discover Dj Sope from the late nineties, and also Dj Sdey. I then discovered Phnom Penh Bad Boy, Aping and the Klap Ya Handz label. Some French/Cambodian artists tried to find their place in France but it’s never been easy. The problem here, for the Cambodian rap, is that it’s not yet supported by the local Djs who prefer playing rap from the US. I really hope the market will explode soon.

In 1992, I started to release mix tapes to introduce new French artists. It’s been an important moment and it’s what helped me put forward the Cut Killer brand. Of course at the time it was tricky evolving as a dj, it was clearly an unknown status. Then I had a part in the movie La Haine by Mathieu Kassovitz (Gothika, Babylon A.D.), where I had a scene in which I was playing from the window of a building for the entire block. The scene became cult in France, a lot of things were about to change for me. I then released Hip Hop/ Rn’B mix tapes, created my label and after several French/US collaborations I entered the BIG DAWG PITBULL collective managed by the most influent dj at the time, Funk Master Flex. He introduced me to P. DIDDY with whom I toured in Barcelona for the MTV music awards and in the US.

It’s the second time you’ve come to Pontoon. How do you find the people of Phnom Penh? Phnom Penh is not a big city like Bangkok or Singapore, what do you like about it? Seriously I love that club and the Cambodians, I fell in love with the country and the people who are open, happy and very attentive. That’s what makes me enjoy Pontoon so much. It’s no wonder why I started my Asian tour in Phnom Penh. No need to be in a mega city to have a good time. I like the interaction and the party spirit. When I tour, I’m not only looking for big cities, I want to be around people who know how to party.

What is your favorite city in Asia to mix?Definitely Tokyo, it’s one of the best cities in the world to go deep musically. The Japanese audience has a huge musical culture and knowledge. It’s crazy how far you can go in Japan.

How do you handle your set to make sure the party’s wild?You have to be aware of what’s going on while sticking to your style and make sure you enjoy as much as the audience. It’s a permanent balance, as soon as I walk into the club I feel it. And it is my role to take everyone with me to the vision of the ideal party.

The first khmer alternative music's label

It is not hard to tell that Cambodia’s music scene is on the rise with bands playing at venues all around Phnom Penh. If you look hard enough, you may even find a record label for k-pop or independent hip hop. But now there is a record label working with local Khmer bands in alternative music, including punk, metal and indie rock. Enter ‘Yab Moung Records Phnom Penh’ (YMRPP). Their logo of the Hanuman says it all. You may have seen the Hanuman monkey in many Khmer dances, it is considered a symbol of strength, perseverance and devotion, much like YMRPP is to their music. Yab moung in slang Khmer also mean ‘crazy but nice’.

Founded by three ‘crazy but nice’ expats, Myles the Aussie muso, who also co-owns The Show Box music venue and bar, Tom, a German festival and events organiser and Chris, the American owner of Moonlight Rock in Otres Beach, and old-school music aficionado from Seattle who was heavily involved in the grunge scene rubbing shoulders with the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

All mad into music, they discovered there was not much support out there for young Khmer musicians. With the idea of making these talented kids more

accessible to the public, the three of them came up with the idea of YMRPP. They want to help these bands become international and believe that the musicians here have the skill and creativity. YMRPP hopes to have Cambodia’s first national tour of alternative music in 2013 and to promote the music from here. “The bands are amazing” Myles says with true excitement, “the skill and creativity coming out is up there with the rest of the world”.

Before, during and since their launch on 21st December 2012, YMRPP have worked in collaboration with lots of bands to find out what it is these bands need and want. They see themselves as a community minded organization and are keen on meeting the band’s families, and in supporting the band member’s education and work, to reach all-round emotional and creative fulfillment.

The Sihanoukville carnival aka the Khmarnaval has returned for its 9th edition the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of February. A huge themed event on road safety co-organized by the Mlop Tapang NGO with shows, concerts and parades where the street kids who worked hard to make it happen will be the stars. 1000 to 1500 costumed kids will walk the streets to celebrate for this impressive yearly show, probably the biggest street event in Cambodia. Hard to miss the impressive and colorful float of decorated trucks and motorbikes passing everywhere in the town. Want to be in the parade? Bring your vehicule to pimp it and take a part in the event. A great success for the event and the man behind, the untypical Bob Passion who dedicated his stay in Cambodia to the street kids. K1 fitness and fight factory found the perfect spot in Phnom Penh, as the Kingdom’s appetite and culture for fighting sports and martial arts never decreased. After a successful round of 10 years in Vietnam, of having opened a K1 fight factory, gym owner David Minetti decided to move here and open another gym, which has been running smoothly for 2 years. The gym provides training for a wide range of fighting sports whether they are traditional, local or foreign, but also fitness with a wide range of cardio courses like crossfit. Teachers from Cambodia and abroad teach professional fight in a modern gym where everything’s done to make sure you become the fighter you want to be.

What are the qualities you look for in a good fighter?First we look at the coordination of a person, if you are not coordinated, in boxing, it’s very difficult. It’s not natural for someone to receive punches so automatically, the reflex is to turn yourself away.

Some people have the ability to not be scared and fight back, which is very important.

What does the K1 training looks like?In a lot of ways this style of training is successful because it’s a different way to work your body. Unlike other gyms where you can always lift free weights or run on the tread mill, here you get a good mix of cardio, kickboxing as well as grappling and MMA training. People come here because the atmosphere is different. It’s not just a gym, when you come you can find friends and possibly a job, and everyone helps each other. We let customers train on their own paste, with proper care and supervision.

When you are in the ring with your opponent what are your first thoughts?Normally at the highest level we already have a strategy, we watch videos of the fighter, but my first thing when I come in the cage is to knock him out!

How does it feel to win?To win is always good but you don’t learn anything. After the fight you go out to a club and celebrate. When you lose you go back home and watch the fight and ask yourself ‘why did I lose’? Believe me, you go and watch the fight back many times and learn what you did wrong to understand why you lost and then train harder. Every fighter should lose sometime, because that’s when you learn the most.

Do you have any advice to beginners who want to try it out?Some beginners want to try fitness and not boxing because a lot of people have a bad image of fighting and think that they will get hurt, which is absolutely wrong. A lot of people I train never spar unless they ask me to. In this case, I take them aside and teach them individually. So don’t be afraid to come train, it’s a very cool way to stay fit.

What do you want to be remembered for most?The most important thing for me is to bring my young fighters to the highest level as possible, now I have some guys who are very good and I hope they will be able to get a world title.

The clear starting point for any successful date is something that makes both parties smile, laugh, and slightly embarrass themselves. In Phnom Penh, perhaps the best way to tick off all three boxes is to hit up the roller skating rink at the top of the Golden Sorya Mall. Get ready to grab hands and skate off into the sunset, or at least help pick each other up off the floor. Romance in action, truly.

For dinner, you absolutely must be off to Ze Foodiebus. Your date will be sincerely impressed that you know about this magical little gourmet hideaway above street 310, the experience of which is almost obscenely beautiful. Just don’t forget to book one of their two tables ahead of time, as a tragic “Nous sommes désolés” from the sweetie Ze Foodiebus team would certainly dampen the evening’s spirit.

Correction: perhaps the actual best starting point for such a date would be a drink. But only one! (Or two.) Enough to calm the nerves, but not so much as to impair one’s balance to any deadly dangerous degree.

End up at Dream World. Beware the Squirrel Tub, lest you be left with a vomit-tinged g’night smooch, and head straight for the Ferris wheel. Feel not a tad cliché when you use the altitude and the ambient sound of metal grinding in a way that it probably should not to cling to each other in fear, feigned or otherwise, as you look down onto the lights of our Charming City.
