Featured Speaker: David C. Hardesty, Jr. President Emeritus, West Virginia University (1995-2007) Professor of Law, WVU (1995 - present) David Hardesty is President Emeritus and Professor of Law at West Virginia University. He teaches subjects related to legal ethics, leadership for lawyers, trends in the legal profession, law practice management and the role of legislatures in the American legal system, including bill drafting. Professor Hardesty holds degrees from West Virginia University, Oxford University (which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard Law School. He also attended advanced courses in higher education leadership and decision theory at Harvard University. Professor Hardesty is a frequent speaker on subjects related to the legal profession, higher education and leadership. He and his wife, Susan, are co-authors of Leading the Public University, Essays, Speeches and Commentary, published for West Virginia University by the WVU Press (2007). He has facilitated retreats and other meetings of boards and community groups for over three decades.

Featured Speaker: Jennifer Bloom, Ed.D. Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Higher Education Leadership Master’s Degree Program Florida Atlantic University Jennifer L. Bloom, Ed.D. joined the Department of Educational Leadership and Research Methodology at Florida Atlantic University in August 2015 as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Higher Education Leadership Master’s Degree Program. She previously served as a Clinical Professor and Director of the Master’s degree program in the Higher Education & Student Affairs Program housed in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policies at the University of South Carolina (USC) from August 2007 to August 2015. Prior to USC, she served as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs & the Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995. Dr. Bloom is a co-founder of the Appreciative Advising and Appreciative Education movements. She established the annual Appreciative Advising Summer Institute, the Appreciative Education Conference, an on-line Appreciative Advising course, the process for Certifying Appreciative Advisers, and other exciting initiatives related to Appreciative Advising and Appreciative Education.

Director, Program Practice and Innovation Council Opportunity in Education Dr. Nicole Norfles serves as Director, Program Practice and Innovation at the Council for Opportunity in Education working directly on their i3 grant, now termed “GO College Collaborative.” Her role is to develop, manage and coordinate initiatives to execute the objectives of the model by working with Collaborative Coordinators in Erie, PA and Louisville, KY to organize implementation of the model, much like Talent Search +, including oversight of the College Access Program Directors and College Coaches, throughout the project. Dr. Norfles previously served as the Education Program Officer with the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, as a Policy Consultant with Casey Family Programs, as Special Assistant to the President of the Council for Opportunity in Education and as Fellow in the PELL INSTITUTE. Dr. Norfles received her doctorate from The George Washington University.

Does your institutions struggle with how to recognize hazing within communities and how to prevent it? This session will address current data and recent research that has advanced the field of hazing prevention.

This hands-on workshop will focus on providing you with an overview of this exciting movement within the academic advising community called Appreciative Advising. The presentation is based on the book titled, The Appreciative Advising Revolution, which the presenter co-authored with Dr. Bryant Hutson and Dr. Ye He from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. We will first define the terms academic advising and Appreciative Advising and look at the important role that advising plays in student success. The six phases of Appreciative Advising – Disarm, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver, and Don’t Settle – will be defined. Participants will not only learn what each phase means, but they will also have the opportunity to learn specific techniques for implementing each of these phases.
