Internship Timeline

Interns are accepted on a rolling basis untilfilled.

If accepted, during the internship, you willexpect to gain expertise in all aspects ofcivil litigation process, including serving anddrafting affidavits of service; draftmediation/ settlement position letters;propounding and responding tointerrogatories, document productionrequests, requests to admit; draftingaffidavits in support of motions of defaultand conditional collective certification; andenforcement of judgments. You willadditionally have received training in CourtFiling (ECF/ NYSCEF), legal research(WestLaw and LexisNexis) and haveattended depositions or shadowedattorneys to court conferences, andcommunicating with state and federalagencies like the National Labor RelationsBoard and the Equal EmploymentOpportunity Commission.

You will be assigned administrative tasks,including the docketing of court emails,submission of electronics permit requestsfor conferences in the Southern Districtfederal court, rescheduling courtconferences with the judge and opposingcounsel, and the mailing out of Notice ofPendency to potential Fair Labor StandardsAct Conditional Collective Certification opt-

Description:The Federal Public Defender Office for theNorthern District of West Virginia isaccepting applications for the position ofAssistant Federal Public Defender. brings actions under the District’s antitrust andnon-profit laws. The Housing and CommunityJustice Section works with community groups,tenant organizations, and District governmentagencies to address nuisance properties, litigatescases essential to protecting affordable housingand tenants’ rights, and brings cases to protectresidents from other abuses such as wage theftand harm to the environment. The Office ofConsumer Protection protects the District’sconsumers through enforcement of consumer lawsand educating consumers about their rights. Itinvestigates and brings actions to stop unlawfultrade practices and to obtain monetary relief,including restitution, damages, and penalties.

The Deputy works closely with the AttorneyGeneral and the Chief Deputy Attorney General indeveloping and implementing the vision for theOffice’s affirmative civil litigation work, with aspecific emphasis on protecting vulnerable anddisadvantaged District residents. The Deputy’sresponsibilities include, but are not limited to:•Strengthening the Division’s policies andprocedures to create a best-in-class publicadvocacy practice, including:◦Consulting with theChief Deputy Attorney General on the Division’slegal and policy objectives;◦Incorporating best practices from the affirmativelitigation groups of other state attorney generaloffices;◦Developing practices that encourage testing novellegal strategies or categories of cases that seek topromote the public interest, especially whenseeking to protect the vulnerable ordisadvantaged; and◦Developing policies, including internal proceduresas well as potential regulation or legislation, tostrengthen existing protections for District

Firearm trials oftentimes involve highlytechnical forensic testimony and a significantnumber of exhibits.
