DEFENSIVE-MINDED MOUNTAINEERS• Under Mike Carey, WVU has been known as

a strong defensive team. • Currently, West Virginia is 6th nationally with

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION VS. SHU• Bria Holmes inked 36 points, tying Kate

Bulger for the second most at the Coliseum. It was the first 35-point game by a WVU player since Meg Bulger in 2005.

RETURN OF VETERAN LEADERS• WVU has three veteran seniors that will

lead the way.• Guard Linda Stepney started 34-of-35

games last season and dished out a team-leading 107 assists. The Norfolk, Virginia product averaged 5.1 points and 3.3 rebounds in 23.9 minutes last season.

• Averee Fields, a forward from Murray, Kentucky, boasted 7.6 points and corralled 5.2 boards per game in 35 games last season. Fields notched 46 steals for the year, which was second only to Bria Holmes.

• Crystal Leary proved to be a strong asset of the bench last season, pulling in 3.7 boards per game and scoring 2.9 points a contest. Leary, also a native of Norfolk, had a strong 66.1 percent field goal percentage, knocking down 33-of-54 shots attempted.

• Center Lanay Montgomery saw action in 24 games last year, boasting 1.7 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.

PLENTY OF NEW FACES• There are six student-athletes that will don

the Old Gold and Blue for the first time.• WVU welcomes two players from the

junior college ranks: Kayla Montgomery (Gulf Coast State) and Jessica Morton (Gulf Coast State).

Credential pickup is located at the Red Gate and opens one hour prior to each game.

GAMEDAYParking is free and open to the public in the Coliseum parking lot. Parking passes will be provided for only games that coincide with WVU men’s basketball games.

The working press area is located on the east side of the main floor at concourse level (22 rows from the playing floor). Press should enter through the Blue Gate with their credentials. Forty-eight seats are available for working media; four television slings are also available. West Virginia grants broadcast rights to the official radio outlet of the visiting team on reciprocal basis. Accredited photographers may work along the playing floor at both baselines behind the restriction line established by the NCAA. Cutline writers or equipment carriers are not permitted on the playing floor.

RADIO COVERAGEThe Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG will air every women’s basketball game on radio stations throughout West Virginia and on WVUsports.com with announcer Jeff Culhane on the call.

JEFF CULHANE, PLAY-BY-PLAY

Culhane joins the Mountaineer family for his second season, following a six-year stint with the Nebraska Husker Sports Network. In his first season as the women’s basketball play-by-play voice, Culhane is also responsible for the Mountaineer football pre and postgame shows and play-by-play for WVU baseball.

A native of Mitchell, South Dakota, Culhane is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University, where he played football and baseball as a two-time NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete.

MEG BULGER, ANALYST

Former WVU great Meg Bulger enters her second year as color commentator for the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG. She donned the Old Gold and Blue during the 2004-06 and 2008 seasons. As a color analyst, Bulger has worked stints with ESPNU and ROOT SPORTS. A native of Pittsburgh, Bulger married former professional baseball player Jim Gallagher. The couple have a daughter Nola. Recap Junior Bria Holmes’ game-leading 23 points carried the No. 17-ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team past Eastern Kentucky, 67-42, on Saturday evening in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT at the WVU Coliseum. West Virginia (1-0) used a 12-point run to close out the first half and took a commanding 30-19 halftime lead. WVU added four more points to the run in the second half before EKU came firing back. The Colonels (0-1) cut the deficit to 11 midway through the second half, but were unable to overcome the stingy play from WVU. West Virginia is now 13-1 in season openers under head coach Mike Carey. Holmes tied a career-high with nine field goal makes. Her 24 attempts tied five others for 10th most field goals shot by a Mountaineer junior. The Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year notched three steals, two assists and a block in 37 minutes of play. Veteran leaders Linda Stepney and Averee Fields each reached double-digits with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The duo combined for 10-of-14 from the field. Stepney handed out three assists and committed just one turnover in 36 minutes. Crystal Leary, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, grabbed 11 rebounds and swatted away a career-high four blocks in the win. Freshman Teana Muldrow tallied eight points and pulled in five boards during the win. EKU’s Michaela Hunter, Mariah Massengill and Shameekia Murray each had a team-leading eight points for the Colonels. Hunter corralled seven rebounds, including six off the defensive glass. The Mountaineers made 24-of-56 from the field for 42.9 percent, holding EKU to 14-of-51 for 27.5 percent. WVU hit six treys compared to the Colonels’ five. The Mountaineers held a slight rebounding edge 44-38, scoring 26 points in the paint. The Colonels won the points off turnover battle, 17-12. Early in the contest, Eastern Kentucky capitalized on WVU’s shooting woes as the Colonels took a 6-2 edge through the first five minutes. Holmes hit back-to-back triples cutting the Mountaineers deficit to 9-8 with 14-plus minutes remaining. WVU found its first lead with a Holmes layup to take a 13-12 edge. EKU quickly responded with its second triple to regain the edge. Both teams swapped leads until Stepney hit a game-tying free throw at 19-19. The Mountaineers closed out the first half on a 12-0 run in the final five minutes to take a commanding 30-19 halftime advantage. Holmes led all scorers at the half with 17 points, while Leary pulled in seven rebounds. EKU’s Murray led the Colonels with six first-half points. WVU shot 35.5 percent (11-of-31) from the field, while EKU was limited to 7-of-28 for 25 percent. The Mountaineers’ momentum continued into the second half as WVU stretched its lead to 15. Eastern Kentucky snapped its seven-minute drought with a trey from Alexus Cooper. WVU shot over 50 percent for the majority of the second half to take a commanding lead over the Colonels and collect their first victory of the season.

Recap The No. 17 West Virginia women’s basketball team outlasted Seton Hall in an offensive showcase, 89-87, on Monday evening at the WVU Coliseum to advance to the Preseason WNIT semifinals. The Mountaineers (2-0) trailed by four with nine minutes remaining. Averee Fields’ layup at 7:09 gave WVU a brief 72-70 lead that it would never relinquish down the stretch. WVU stretched its advantage to nine under four minutes to play, but Seton Hall (1-1) continued to battle back. A pair of free throws from Pirates star Ka-Deidre Simmons cut WVU’s edge to one in the final 13 seconds. Redshirt freshman Teana Muldrow hit a free throw to give WVU an 89-87 lead with six seconds. A last layup attempt from Simmons fell short, as West Virginia secured the win. Holmes, the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, put together one of the most memorable performances in WVU Coliseum history with a career-best 36 points in the win. The New Haven, Connecticut native’s performance tied Kate Bulger (2003) for the second-most points in a single game at the Coliseum. Her effort also tied Bulger for third-most by a WVU junior. Fields earned her first career double-double scoring performance with 21 points, 15 rebounds and dishing out five assists. Muldrow finished out double-figure scoring for WVU with 19 points and nine boards. The freshman’s six triples tied three others for third most by a Mountaineer freshman with the most recent effort from Taylor Palmer in 2010 versus High Point. Seton Hall had four players reach double-figures as Tabatha Richardson-Smith paced the Pirates with 32 points. Simmons finished as the second leading scoring with 20. West Virginia connected on 27-of-64 from the field for 42.2 percent, while Seton Hall hit 29-of-67 for 43.3 percent. Both teams knocked down a combined 23 triples. Seton Hall hit 12-of-25 (48.0%) compared to WVU’s 11-of-24 (45.8%). The Mountaineers won the rebound edge 45-43 and slightly captured the assists battle 20-18. Seton Hall opened the game to a 4-0 lead. West Virginia used a seven-point run midway through the period to take a 24-18 lead at 10:15. Later in the half, Seton Hall’s Simmons knocked down a wide-open trey to tie the contest 29-29. WVU stretched its lead back to four before the Pirates’ Richardson-Smith connected on a triple and layup, tying the game 38-38 with 3:25 on the clock. The Mountaineers once again went up by four. However, Daisha Simmons hit a layup to cut WVU’s lead to 46-45 at the break. The junior Holmes led all scorers with 16 points. Fields already had a double-double in the first half with 11 points and 11 boards. Richardson-Smith and Johnson each had double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. In the opening half, the Mountaineers went 14-of-36 from the field for 38.9 percent, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Seton Hall made 14-of-30 attempts for 46.7 percent, connecting on 5-of-12 from the perimeter. WVU won the rebound column, 29-13.

Recap The No. 17/16 West Virginia University women’s basketball team could not overcome a 15-point second half run by Mississippi State, as the Mountaineers fell 74-61 on Thursday evening at Humphrey Coliseum in the Preseason WNIT semifinal. The Mountaineers (2-1) held a seven-point advantage early on, but MSU (3-0) would take a 35-32 halftime lead. WVU cut it to one at the 16 minute mark in the second half. However, Mississippi State used a 15-0 run to take control of the contest. Not giving up, WVU cut the deficit to nine with less than six minutes remaining. However a pair of back-to-back treys from MSU kept the game out of reach. MSU out-manned the Mountaineers 31-20 on the offensive glass and forced 24 turnovers in the loss. Averee Fields tallied a team-leading and career-best 23 points in the win, going 8-of-14 from the field. She handed out four assists and collected a pair of steals in 37 minutes. Junior Bria Holmes reached double-digits for the seventh straight game with 18 points. She pulled in six rebounds, recorded two blocks and had two steals. Crystal Leary was the top rebounder, pulling down nine boards and scoring five points. Mississippi State was led by freshman Victoria Vivians’ 26 points and five rebounds. Vivians hit four of MSU’s five triples. Ketara Chapel’s 19 points and Breanna Richardon’s 10 rounded out double-digit scoring for the Bulldogs. The Mountaineers shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60), while Mississippi State shot 36 percent (27-of-75). The second chance opportunities proved fruitful for Mississippi State as they won that column, 26-10. West Virginia opened the game on a 7-1 edge. The Mountaineers stretched its first half edge to seven at 12:43. Guard Linda Stepney exited early in the first half due to foul trouble, fueling Mississippi State’s 10-7 run to close the half. The Bulldogs made seven free throws at the end of the first half to take a 35-32 lead. Holmes led the Mountaineers with 13 points, while Fields followed up with nine. The Bulldog’s Ketara Chapel went 4-of-4 from the field and led MSU with nine points. WVU shot 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from the field in the first half, while MSU was held to 29.7 percent (11-of-37). The Mountaineers were outrebounded 27-23, while committing 12 turnovers compared to MSU’s seven. In the second half, the Mountaineers pulled within one (42-41) at 16:21, but would remain scoreless over the next six minutes. Mississippi State went on a 15-0 run capitalizing on turnovers and dominating inside the paint. WVU responded with six points, including back-to-back jumpers from Fields and Muldrow. Fields’ bucket off the glass trimmed the deficit to nine with under six minutes to play. However, a trey and long-range jumper by Vivians stretched the Bulldogs lead back to double-figures. West Virginia cut it to nine under four minutes, but another Vivians free throw and a triple ended the threat.

Recap The No. 22/21-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team rolled to an 83-39 victory over Evansville at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday evening. The Mountaineers (3-1) used a string of runs, including an eight point game-opening barrage, to take a commanding 41-22 halftime lead. Evansville (1-3) cut the deficit to single digits late in the first stanza, but were unable to accommodate for WVU’s physical pressure. The Mountaineers picked up 62 rebounds and outscored the Aces 48-14 inside. For the second time this season, Bria Holmes eclipsed the 30-point mark with a game-high 32 points and a career-best 12 made field goals. The junior reeled in six rebounds and tied Linda Stepney for the team lead with five assists. Wednesday evening marked a career-setting night for Crystal Leary, who tallied new personal bests with 14 points and four blocks. Averee Fields reached double-digits for the fourth straight game by adding 12 to the score column. West Virginia’s 62 rebounds were the most for a Mountaineer squad since corralling 62 against Temple on Feb. 12, 1994. WVU shot a season-high 46.4 percent (32-of-69) from the field, while limiting the Purple Aces to just 12-of-58 for 20.7 percent. Defensively, the Mountaineers blocked 10 shots and notched 17 points off turnovers in the triumph. Sarah Dickey, who was selected to the Preseason All-Missouri Valley team, notched a team-best 16 points for Evansville. The Mountaineers used three separate eight point runs to take a commanding 41-22 lead at the break. WVU opened the first half on an 8-0 run. Fields later added back-to-back buckets to put the WVU up comfortably, 14-3. Dickey knocked down a free throw to cut WVU’s lead to nine with 9:19 remaining. A free throw by Lanay Montgomery and a Holmes layup extended the Mountaineers advantage back to 12. Evansville made surge with six minutes remaining off six straight points from Dickey cutting the lead to seven. In the final five minutes, WVU scored 13-of-14 points to end the period. West Virginia shot 15-of-34 for 44.1 percent from the field in the first half, holding the Aces to 6-of-27 for 22.2 percent. Holmes led WVU with 16 points and five rebounds, while Dickey had 10 for Evansville. The second half started off red hot for the Mountaineers as they conducted a 12-6 run to take a commanding 53-28 lead and never looked back in the contest. Freshman Teana Muldrow reeled nine points and nine rebounds, while Bre McDonald completed her first night in Mountaineer uniform with nine points and six boards.
