Grant “Collecting Shakespeare- Henry & Emily Folger” Lecture & Book Signing April 5 - June 28 Arthur Leipzig “Next Stop New York” Photographic Exhibit _________________________ The North Shore Historical Museum Names Its Building MARGUERITE & JOSEPH SUOZZI BUILDING Last fall, the North Shore Historical Museum embarked on a Naming Opportunities Campaign, offering friends of the Museum opportunities to contribute funds in exchange for the dedication of unique parts of the Museum building. The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that, in response to this campaign, a generous gift from the friends and family of Marguerite and Joseph Suozzi will result in dedicating the historic 1907 Courthouse building to them. The Suozzis are well known to the community served by the Museum. Both Marge and Joe have devoted a significant part of their lives to the betterment of the North Shore. The Honorable Joseph A. Suozzi was born in Italy and has lived out the American dream of achievement and public service. He attended St. Patrick’s School in Glen Cove and St. Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay. After majoring in education at Fordham University, he enlisted in the Air Force. As a navigator on a B-24 plane in World War II, he flew 35 missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and three Oak Leaf Clusters. After the war, he attended Harvard Law School on the G.I. Bill, graduating in 1948. He became the law partner of Mayor Luke Mercadante and, in 1949, at the age of 28, he was elected as a Judge of the City Court of Glen Cove, the youngest judge ever elected in New York State. He was elected for 2 terms as Mayor of Glen Cove, and to two 14 year terms as Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. During his second term, he was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Division. He eventually became a senior partner in the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English and Klein. In addition to her duties as a wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and mother, she has been an avid devotee and supporter of the political campaigns of her husband and her son, Tom, who served four terms as Glen Cove Mayor and two terms as Nassau County Executive. An enthusiastic gardener and champion golfer, she has also been active in the AARP, Girl Scouts, St. Patrick’s R.C. Church and most notably, the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. She has chaired this hugely popular event for over 50 years. Working with a committee of local volunteer residents, Marge has presented programs ranging from opera, ballet and Broadway musicals to swing, jazz and military bands. The Museum is planning a series of events on Sunday, August 3, beginning at 3 PM, when the Plaque naming the building will be unveiled. Special guests and the public are invited to attend the ceremony at the Court building at 140 Glen Street in Glen Cove. In recognition of Mrs. Suozzi’s 50 year leadership of the Morgan Park Concerts, the public is invited to bring a picnic to Morgan Park after the ceremony to join in the festivities. A band concert will follow. Brian Mercadante, President of the Museum, when announcing this event, said that he is “anticipating that this gift will form the cornerstone of an endowment fund that will ensure the continued viability of the Museum and will enhance its presence in the North Shore community”. “Next Stop New York”

Arthur Leipzig is an American photographer perhaps best known for his photo essays on New York life in the 1940s and 50s. Focusing on Leipzig’s urban street scenes from this time period, the exhibit presents thirty of his black and white photographs. This acclaimed photographer exemplifies the spirit of American photojournalism in the mid-20th century.

Join us the evening of Saturday, April 5th at 7:00pm as we celebrate the opening of this special exhibit with a presentation to be given by Joan Harrison, Professor of Art at LIU Post. Formerly a student in his photography classes, Harrison will discuss the career and influence of Arthur Leipzig. Light reception to follow with wine complimentary wine provided by Casa de Vinos. Program fee is $10.00 for general public, $5.00 for Museum Members. Please call to RSVP, as seating is limited.
