The Great War as Observed From a College Campus Archival Image Analysis Exercise The aim of this class will be to examine various viewpoints. We want to explore how how Bronxites experienced World War I, otherwise known as the “Great War.” Select one of the historical images. Write a short response that discusses the historical relevance (the “backstory”) of this image. Think about what you can prove historically with your image and discuss that in your response. You will be using your image to make a historical argument. The image will be the evidence you use to make your argument. You should consider how the details of your image relate to both the Bronx and larger history of WWI. Ask yourself some of the following questions to stimulate ideas that you could write about. These are for brainstorming: Who are the narrators in this image? What basic facts did the image provide to you? What points of view are being expressed in this image? Do these images show anything about social power, for example class, race, or gender? Does the image show anything about the campus at that time? This could be architecture, social relationships, cultural events, government operations and control, religion, economics, etc. Was there anything that the image did not show that seems important in terms of people’s lives at that time? How has your view of WWI been challenged, enhanced or otherwise shaped by these images?
