Namura completes Malaccamax-type VLCCATLANTIC PIONEER

Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.delivered the ATLANTIC PIONEER,a 302,303 DWT double hull typeVLCC, to Primo Shipping S.A. at itsImari Shipyard & Works on Oct. 1,2009.

The ATLANTIC PIONEER is thefirst Malaccamax type VLCC built byNamura, which has the maximizeddeadweight at the assigned summerload draught to pass through theStrait of Malacca.

The vessel can navigate at a speedof over 15.5 knots at the assigned sum-mer load draught due to adoption ofthe low-resistance hull form and theNamura flow Control Fin (NCF).These characteristics contribute toimproved propulsion performance andlower fuel oil consumption. The supe-rior cargo loading capacity can bemaintained at the shallow draughtcondition in the Far East and the Per-sian Gulf trade.

The vessel has five center and fivepairs of wing cargo oil tanks, one pairof slop tanks, and six pairs of waterballast tanks, all of which are ar-ranged in double-hull and double-bot-tom structures. The vapor emission

control system is installed as an envi-ronmentally friendly device.

The engine room machinery is au-tomated based on the M0 concept, andthe main engine is the MITSUI MAN-B&W 7S80MC-C (Mark 8) type. Theelectric generating plant consists ofone turbo generator, two main dieselgenerators, and one emergency gen-erator. The steam generating plantconsists of one auxiliary boiler and oneexhaust gas economizer.

Special attention is given to safety, environmental protection, and reduc-tion of labor and operation costs, andcompliance with the recent interna-tional regulations. E.g., an air typestern tube-sealing device is applied toprevent marine oil pollution, and thecentral fresh water cooling system isapplied to the main engine and auxil-iary machinery for easy maintenance.

dent ones for the spherical aluminumalloy tanks. This innovative featurecontributes to reducing the hull steelweight by about 10%, improved fuelconsumption, higher terminal com-patibility, and less maintenance.

The structural design is more ef-fective than the conventional LNGCsince the tank cover is utilized as theship’s longitudinal strength member. This structural optimization enables

the SAYAENDO LNGC to be morecompact and use steel materials effec-tively.

SAYAENDO LNGC can also attainhigher compatibility with LNG termi-nals in the world through its compactdimensions and better maintainabil-ity because the flying passage support-ing structures can be eliminated.

Furthermore, SAYAENDO LNGChas realized reduction of fuel con-sumption by more than 20% in com-bination with the higher efficiencypropulsion system called “MHI UST(Ultra Steam Turbine)” comparedwith the conventional steam turbineplant. Therefore, the SAYAENDOLNGC is a more environmentallyfriendly LNGC design.

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.completed the pure car carrier,BRASILIA HIGHWAY (HN:1503) atits Marugame Headquarters for Ka-wasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. The vesselis designed with the carrying capac-ity of 6,237 cars based on the stan-dard passenger car (RT43), and cancarry recreation vehicles, land cruis-ers, trucks, dump trucks, etc.

The general arrangement of thevessel consists of four cargo holds and11 car decks, and a garage is providedon the upper accommodation deck aftpart. Two of the 12 car decks (Nos. 6and 8 car decks) provided for the car-rier are liftable to accommodate tallvehicles or small vehicles efficiently.

These decks are operated upwardand downward by a panel lift car(SWL 32t). The No. 5 deck is a roll-on/off deck (drive-through access) withtwo rampways, one of which is a flaptype arranged center of the starboardside (SWL 20t), and the other is a fold-ing type arranged aft part of the star-board side (SWL 150t).

The center ramp can move verti-cally between the Nos. 4 and 5 cardecks according to tidal conditions.Actuating devises for opening andclosing of the external ramps are theinverter system except cleating. Both
