A children’s film high on visual effects,Contiloe Pictures’ Maruti Mera Dosst, hasits moments of fiction and mythology, whatwith Lord Hanuman coming to the rescueof Rameshwari, the film’s protagonist, byplaying her friend. According to B.Pradeep, Senior Line Producer - VFX,Prasad EFX, since the film is a take onmythology, the VFX look is as photo-realistic as possible. Elaborating on themajor sequences of the 16 shots thatrequired high-level of VFX work, he said,“There is a sequence that required a statueof Hanuman to jump out of the temple,follow the agorae and bless him. It was abig challenge to create a photo-realisticvirtual statue of Hanuman and texture it tomatch the original model erected on thefilm’s set. This was achieved using thetraditional 3D method rather then using 3Dscans. Further, we used the High-DynamicRange Imaging (HDRI) to light up thestatue so that it would blend seamlesslyinto the live action footage. We alsotracked a lot of camera movements tomatch the statue’s animation and effectsseamlessly into the footage.”

manner to blend with the environment(wind and other animation dynamics),according to Pradeep. The same wasachieved using the Shave and Haircutplug-in for Maya. Yet another majorchallenge was creating a 3D werewolfcharacter with full body fur. This again wasdone using the Shave and Haircut plug-in.However, simulating the fur on thecharacter was a demanding task since itincreases the rendering time substantiallyand also weighs heavily on the processor’scapacity.

As for the film’s animation content, apartfrom the three minutes of exclusive 3Danimation rendered into cartoon-shadedframes, about seven photo realistic 3Dcharacters have been animated, said HimaKumar, Executive Producer - VFX, for thestudio. In addition, facial animations withlip-synchronisation were added to severalcharacters to match the audio referenceprovided. With 24 minutes of VFX shotsand three minutes of 3D animation, theproject’s highlight is the photo-realisticcharacter animation and fur simulations,believes Pradeep. Seconds Kumar, “Fursimulation was one of the most time-consuming FX. We had to wait for therender (the process of generating the finalimage from a model after different stagesare completed) to complete and thentweak it once we saw the output. Thoughrepeating the same process gave us theopportunity to improvise on the fur, it tooka lot of our time and system processingpower." With 30 artists on board, the taskwas accomplished in about less than sixmonths, said Kumar.
