Submit a Project for the 2017 Project Achievement Award

Contact Josh Beakley, P.E., at 972-506-7216.

The Project Achievement Award Program rewards creativity and excellence in precast concrete pipe and box culvert design and installation. Any state DOT may enter the award program. State DOTs and ACPA members are invited to submit projects jointly or separately. ACPA members submitting projects separately must obtain the signature of the state DOT on their entry form. The winning project will be based upon public involvement and education, use of new materials or large diameter concrete pipe, use of new technologies, innovation, complexity, cost effectiveness and environmental benefits. Projects may or may not involve all seven elements of the evaluation criteria. Entry forms are due on March 1, 2017. Winners will be announced in June 2017 at the Awards presentation ceremony during the AASHTO Bridge and Structures Subcommittee meeting. The 2017 application is on the ACPA website here.

Maragrita Takou, PhD ACPA’s Technical Resources Manager, Margarita Takou was honored on December 17, 2016 when she received her Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Arlington. The title of the dissertation conducted by Margarita Takou was, Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Buried Large Diameter Steel Pipes with Controlled Low Strength Material. The dissertation was supervised by Professor Ali Abolmaali.

The main goal of the research was to gain an in-depth understanding of the behavior of buried large-diameter pipes with controlled low-strength material (CLSM). Design equations were developed based on extensive parametric studies that aimed for an optimized design for designers in industry. Both experimental and numerical methods were espoused in the investigating procedure. Experimental measurements were conducted at the site to measure the deflection of the pipe during the construction stages. A Finite Element Model (FEM) was developed for the first time, to mimic the experimental conditions of the pipe tested. The geometrical dimensions, boundary conditions, material properties, and construction stages were all applied based on the site conditions. A model-change algorithm was used for an accurate representation of the staged construction method. Geometry, material, and contact nonlinearities were implemented. A Newton-Raphson algorithm was used for the model convergence. Overall, 28 sections were analyzed with the FEA, and the results for the deflection at springline and invert were compared with the experimental data. The material properties of the CLSM were investigated in the Civil Engineering Laboratory (CELB) at the University of Texas at Arlington. Compression, flexure, and triaxial material tests were conducted based on American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) D4832, C31, and D4767, respectively. A material law was developed based on the test results. Unique design equations were developed for large-diameter steel pipes with CSLM. A total of 3500 models were run, and a regression analysis was conducted. The research was funded by the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) and the Water Research Foundation (WRF). Sincere gratitude goes to her doctoral advisor, Professor Ali Abolmaali, for his unlimited support and exceptional guidance throughout this long journey. With patience and positive thinking, he taught her to defend her opinion and overcome every obstacle that she encountered.

IndustryNews Director of the FDOT Addresses ASTM C13 Luncheon

Timothy J. Ruelke P.E., Director, Office of Materials, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) was the featured speaker at the ASTM C13 luncheon on December 5. His presentation covered the Transportation Curriculum Coordination Council (TC3) with an overview of the program and its process. TC3 is a technical service program within AASHTO that focuses on developing training products for technical staff in the areas of construction, maintenance, and materials. TC3 has a library of more than 100 online training modules covering a variety of topics in the three primary disciplines. As a national resource, TC3 helps states, local government and industry save money at a critical time of infrastructure investment through coordinated course development, a Web-based learning management system, information and resource-sharing that is available at a substantially reduced cost. See the video here.
