Domestic Water Heating

Traditional Approach (older)

• Heating boiler through tank heater to larger storage tank

• Users draw directly from large tank

• Typical users: Motels, Dorms, Prisons, Army Barracks

Disadvantages

• Floor Space– Residential building 140

units– Dedicated boiler & tanks –

80 sq.ft.

• Radiation Losses– 30% of the total hot water

capacity

• Recover Rate– Slow – Hot water storage

• Legionella Bacteria– At 115°F and lower

• Maintenance– Periodic maintenance

needed (cement, glass and/or epoxy lined tanks)

• Leaks

Operation & Parameters

• Make all piping connections• Temp. Controller in Panel operates on DHW supply temp. &

DHW usage using Feed-back & Feed-forward principles• Controls are based on PID theory• DHW shall be maintained ± 4º F ranging from 110º - 140ºF• Low Demands (night time) DHW set point automatically

resets to lower temp to reduce heat loss and conserve energy

• Temp. Switch on DHW side set at 20ºF above set point– When activated, cuts off source of heat by closing boiler port of 3-

way control valve

• 3-way control valve operates like a diverting valve for boiler side

Flo-H20™ Sizing Procedure

Preliminary Hot Water Demand Estimate:

Example 1: 200 unit apartment building

Step 1: Table 14 of ASHRAE Applications Handbook estimates 3 fixture units (FU) per apartment at 140°F

Step 2: Calculate total amount of FU for entire building

Total FU = 3 x 200 = 600

Step 3: From Figure 22 of ASHRAE Applications Handbook, get the required hot water flow in USGPM at 140°F

Step 4: Find out boiler supply temperature available to the Flo-H2O (200°F)
