Goals of ASU 101

• Support student success

• Engage students in the university

• Familiarize students with ASU

• Inform them about unique aspects of ASU

• Provide a small class atmosphere to make a connection


Course Structure

• Required for all first-time freshmen

• Hybrid-format (classroom and online)

• Five-week – 3 times a semester (all but WP Carey)

• 8 hours face-to-face (5 – 1and ½ hour) and minimum of 8 hours of activities online

• 600+ sections this Fall

• Required at the start of the course:

– Student success

– Academic integrity


ASU 101 – Course Topics• Optional Topics:

– Sustainability

– Social embeddedness

– Global engagement

– Entrepreneurial approach

– Diversity

– Stress management

– College topics


Course Site

• Each instructor gets his/her own site

• Groups can get common course site

• All material is already there

• Each instructor must decide what to include; what to show/hide; add material, etc.

• Use course site as “text book”

Available Content for all Areas• Pre-class activity

– Self-evaluation or exercise

– Can be completed online, or

– Conducted in class

• Short intro

– 10-15 minutes narrated in Breeze by member of expert team

– Brief power point presentation of topic

– Can be assigned for students to review online, or

– Instructor can present in class


• Considerable flexibility regarding topics, materials, and methods

• All materials can be assigned online or covered in class (use Bb show/hide feature to manage content)

• Content and assessment tools can be added or modified

• Room to add college-specific topics and/or expand on existing topics depending on college needs

– Readings

– Podcasts

– Other activities

– Can be used in class or assigned online

• Post-class quiz

– Short M/C and T/F based on narrated introductory presentation

– Can be modified

– Can be assigned online (potential cheating problem), or

– Done in class (5 -7 minutes max)

• Post-class discussion online

– Questions provided – can be modified

Assessment of Learning

• Quizzes provide very basic check on learning

• Reflections provide more assessment of learning content


Course Evaluation/Assessment(all anonymous- will be made available online)

• Student survey for instructor evaluation focused on general teaching behaviors, not expertise (to be used in conjunction with, or instead of college evaluation – information for colleges/departments)

• Student survey for feedback about course (to be used to review course and change content and format as appropriate in future semesters)

• Instructor survey for feedback about the course (to be used to be used to review course and change content and format as appropriate in future semesters)
