Mark S. Savage, DirectorEngineering Career ServicesCornell University201 Carpenter HallIthaca, NY 14853-2201

Dear Mark

For the 2011-12 recruiting year, we had three openings for new college hires for our small facility of 45 scientists and engineers. We identified three candidates for these openings, made offers, and the students accepted our offers. In all three cases, the students later changed their minds and declined our offers, informing us after the recruiting season had ended.

I bring this situation to your attention for several reasons. I have recruited at Cornell for two years, and have personally recruited three of your students to our company. This year, one of your students accepted with us, and much later declined the offer. As noted above, this has prevented us from bringing any new college hires to our facilities this year. It also did not allow us to make second offers to other students, including several at Cornell, who were strong candidates. Therefore, both we and your students suffered as a result.

We try to present our job requirements and opportunities honestly and openly to your students. We would not rescind an offer once extended. It is fair for us to expect the same in return from graduating students. You need to stress to your students that accepting a job offer is a serious commitment on their part, and that they should follow through on this commitment. To do otherwise harms both the hiring company and their fellow students. If this situation occurs again with your school or others where we have had a similar experience, I will request that these schools be dropped from our recruiting schedule.

Sincerely,

Gene Bartholomew, PhDManager, Packaging Evaluation
