Maghull Hornby Festival 2013 Activity Badge

This festival badge was the idea of St Andrews Rainbow Leaders, who have been inspired by the recent Frank Hornby Festival in May to mark the 150th Birthday of the man himself.

Frank Hornby was an English inventor, businessman and politician. He was a visionary in toy development and manufacture, and although he had no formal engineering training, he was

responsible for the invention and production of three of the most popular lines of toys – Meccano, Hornby Model Railways and Dinky Toys. He lived some of his life in Maghull and indeed was laid to

rest in St Andrews Church graveyard.

The challenge is very easy to complete and has been structured into 3 sections - Play-it, Make-it and See-it. Within each section, you'll find activities appropriate to your Uniformed Section, which can be

identified by the symbols at the top of each suggested activity i.e. Beavers/Rainbows, Brownies/Cubs.

All you need to do is select the Hornby Brand within each section that appeals to you most then complete at least one activity. It can be completed over 3 or more weekly meetings or as a one off

activity event.

All templates, song sheets and game instructions are enclosed in this pack to support your preparation, together with a badge ordering form . Directions and the map for the heritage trail can be

found on the Maghull Hornby Festival website www.maghullhornbyfestival.wordpress.com .

The cost of the Badge is £1 (plus postage cost). Any profit made will be used by St Andrews Rainbows to fund the cost of future Rainbow outings, rent and sleepovers.

Enjoy the Challenge, embrace Frank Hornby and if you have any queries, please feel free to contact Lisa Coleman at [email protected]

Section 1 – Play It (use your imagination)

Play Station Corners (instructions at the back of this pack) Sing – Runaway Train Action Song (lyrics at the back of this pack) Dance to the Locomotion using actions that imitate a train

Using chairs set up to resemble the seating on a train, journey back in time to Victorian England. Once at your destination, hold a Victorian tea party or play a game of cricket, before jumping back on the time train to return to the future.

Make up a rap song about trains, which includes sound effects Street Dance to the Locomotion

Using chairs set up to resemble the seating on a train, seat on them and hold a conversation with the passenger next to you about subjects/topics that would have been relevant in Victorian times.

Using a microphone or something similar – make announcements that you would expect to hear in a train station. Remember voice is important, so think about your speech, speed and pronunciation.

Find someone who can teach you an old time dance such as a waltz, quick step or fox trot

Hold a Dinky car rely race by putting the children into teams, placing lanes down on the floor with a finish line. Children are the cars and there is an “L” plate template at the back of this pack should you wish to use it.

Play Garage Corners (instructions at the back of this pack) Use your imagination and create a game that involves cars then play it.

Hold a Dinky car Grand Prix by putting the children into teams, placing circuit lanes down on the floor with a finish line. Children are the cars and there is an “L” plate template at the back of this pack should you wish to use it.

Plan a race strategy for a 30 lap Dinky Grand Prix. Put lanes down on the floor with a finish line and a pit stop area. You must plan in 3 pit stops - each time changing your driver, check the fuel and tyres (fuel is water for your driver and tyres are his/her footwear. Plan carefully to ensure your strategy will win you the race. Execute your plan to see how successful a crew you are.

Use your imagination and create your own game which involves cars then play it.

Pretend you are a crane and move boxes/objects from one side of the room to the other. Sing – London’s bridge is falling down with all the actions. (lyrics at the back of this pack)

Section 1 – Station/Garage Corners Game

This is a variation on the game Colour Corners and is an elimination game.

1. Name each corner of the room after either a station/garage part i.e.a. Stations – Liverpool, Kings Cross, Leeds, Edinburghb. Garage Sections – Fuel, Repairs, Sales, Servicing

2. Instruct the children that whilst the music is playing, they must move around like a train/car but when it stops they are to choose a corner which is the station/part of the garage they wish to visit.

3. The leader of the game then randomly shouts out a named corner and all children in that station/garage section are out.

4. Continue until only one child remains and is declared the winner.

Colour (where appropriate) and cut out the template pieces. Adults may need to help with the cutting.

Glue the face onto the front of the train. Glue the smokestack onto the top. You can glue a bit of cotton ball to the smokestack as pretend smoke. If you want to make it a bit more environmentally realistic, you can color the

cotton grey or black with marker or paint.

Section 2 – Create It Crane

There is a construction site near our house with a huge crane. We like to watch it. I had been thinking about how we could make our own crane ... NOTE: This project contains materials that require adult participation and/or supervision... but it's worth it!

Materials:

two thick cardboard rolls (we used old rolls from cling wrap) thick cardboard box, i.e., from FedEx or Amazon one paper towel roll rocks

tape hot glue (for adult use only) sharp knife (for adult use only) stackable cup (optional) string (optional)

Instructions

1. Cut a circle in the top of the box so that with a bit of pushing and squeezing, the paper towel roll fits tightly into the hole. Because of the tight fit, I didn’t need to secure the roll to the floor of the box, but you could apply a little sticky tape or use hot glue. I filled the box with rocks (to weigh it down) and sealed it up. Then I slipped one of my cling wrap rolls into the paper towel roll, and it rotated very nicely.

2. For the top of the crane, join the two cardboard rolls together. With a sharp knife, cut four shallow incisions at the top of the vertical roll. Then you can push down the edges in between, toward the center of the roll, and create a little nook for the horizontal roll to sit in. This also gives you more surface area to apply hot glue.

17

Page 18: Hornby...  · Web viewBuild your own dinky car using play dough or funky foam pieces. ... Instruct the children that whilst the music is playing,

Spread glue on the pushed-down bits, place the horizontal roll on top, with one end sticking out to be the neck of the crane, and hold it in place while the glue dries. For extra strength, you can tape the rolls together with packaging tape. Because one end is short and one long I decided to glue (with a hot glue gun) a rock into the short end to act as a counterbalance. (If the rock isn’t enough, you can use little weights or little concrete blocks.)

3. To make a bucket for the crane, make two holes on opposite edges of one of the stackable cups, cut a piece of string, and tie one end through each hole to make a loop. I made a small cut in the top of the horizontal roll for the bucket’s string to sit in, and so to reduce the chance of the bucket flying off as the crane gets swung around.
