GOALS address the challenges of

increasing interest and participation improving the preparation of girls in computing

and cyber security. The SPLASH project allows students at schools which lack

computer science courses to earn college credit gain exposure to secure coding skills enter college with a foundational knowledge in

computer science.

By providing college credit for successful completion of the course, the SPLASH model complements the current AP test model.

SPLASH: THE COURSE COSC175 - General Computer Science

Programming Logic Course using C++

Upon successful completion of COSC175, students will be able to: Understand and apply the software development process. Analyze problems and design structured solutions. Understand, create, and apply simple data types and arrays. Create algorithmic solutions using basic control structures (sequence, decisions,

loops) and functions. Compile, execute, and run simple programs (in C++). Understand the importance of software security/secure programming.

Prepares students for CS1

4 college credits !!!!!!!!!!!!

Offered to high school girls

Cost of a 4 credit course is In-state $253 per credit => $1012 plus fees, out of state => $3200

QUANTITATIVE RESULTS: The Splash program is/was offered during the following semesters:

Fall 2012, Fall 2013, Summer 2014, Fall 2014, Summer 2015, Fall 2015

A total of 38 girls, from 14 Maryland schools and 1 school in Tennessee, have taken the SPLASH program, 31 have successfully completed.

Grading Data: 19 A’s or A- OVER 50% received A’s 7 B or B+ OVER 63% received B’s or better 4 C or C+ OVER 75% received C or higher

They have learned about secure coding and software security, a subject many undergraduate computer science students are never exposed to

Several of the SPLASH students finished in the top 10% of all the students enrolled in COSC 175.

Two of the top three grades in the three sections of the course were earned by the SPLASH students.

Some of the most creative projects submitted were by the SPLASH girls.

Several students have been accepted at prestigious universities (i.e., MIT, Colorado School of the Mines, UMCP, etc
