Aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the European Union by correcting imbalances between and in its regions.
Two strands:
• Regional competitiveness and employment . Activities in each region. Example: EFRO-Vlaanderen
• Territorial cooperation Interreg A: cross border cooperation. 52 programs in cross border areas.
Example: Vlaanderen-Nederland Interreg B: transnational cooperation . 13 programs in larger European
areas. Example: North West Europe
Interreg Europe: interregional cooperation . 1 program in EU28 + N, CH

improve innovation performance (gap analysis, open innovation, mentoring, bridge gaps by developing supply chains, infrastructure sharing,…)
Improve competitiveness of companies (demonstrate and test technologies, products, services, service delivery models) (make use of comparable smart specialisations, build transnational critical mass,…)
Deliver societal benefits through innovation (develop, test and implement innovative solutions for social needs and populations at risk,…)
