Our summer reading of the gospel of John finishes September 12. I would appreciate any feedback you might have about such a [long] sermon/reading series.
Week 13 (We’ll be reading both chapters 16 and 17.)
Sunday, August 31: John 16:1-15 Monday, September 1: John 16:16-24 Wonder what would have happened if at verse 23 one of the disciples had said, “We ask that you stay with us.” Tuesday, September 2: John 16:25-28 Wednesday, September 3: John 16:29-33 Is your reaction to verse 29 something like, “What?? That’s not speaking plainly!” Thursday, September 4: John 17:1-5 This chapter is commonly known as Jesus’ “high priestly prayer.” Friday, September 5: John 17:6-19 In verse 6 the word “Word” is the Greek word “Logos” (as in chapter 1, “The Logos was with God and Logos was God.”) In Verse 8, “words” is the Greek word “rhema.” Saturday, September 6: John 17:20-26 How does our witness of different denominations work with the logic of verses 11 and 21 – if Christians are “to be one” so the world will know that God sent Jesus, then what does it do to our witness when we are NOT one? [Chapters 18-20 are the Passion Story. You are invited (always) to read this at your own pace. The sermon series on the Gospel of John will conclude September 7 with a look at John 21.]
Week 14 Sunday, September 7: John 21:1-3 What time of day does verse 3 say? So do you think the gospel writer approves of going back to what you’ve always done (like fishing) after you’ve met Jesus? Monday, September 8: John 21:4-8 Now it’s day – light. So what does gospel writer think about obeying Jesus?
Tuesday, September 9: John 21:9-14 Pay attention to details; the word in verse 9 describing the fire is the same word used in chapter 18 verse 18 in the scene where Peter denies Jesus three times. Wednesday, September 10: John 21:15-19 So how many times does Peter now affirm Jesus? (see yesterday) Thursday, September 11: John 21:20-23 What business is it of ours how Jesus will treat others? What is our obligation? Friday, September 12: John 21:24-25 Do you know some of those other books that testify to Jesus and his continuing actions in our world?

We all need a plan for our money.
Financial Peace University (FPU) is
that plan! It teaches God's ways of
handling money. Through video
teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical,
practical steps to get from where you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan
will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much
more!
The average family pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 90 days!
FPU classes will meet from 6:30-8 pm on Wednesday evenings each week for nine weeks
(September 24 through November 19) in room 204, and will be facilitated by Patrick and
Wynda McGarity.
If you'd like more information or to let us know you are interested, please contact Wynda
McGarity at 972-365-8252 for at [email protected].

M E T H O D I S T
The United Methodist Women met August 24 (just 4 months from Christmas Eve) to begin
wrapping shoe boxes for Project Christmas Child.
Fall is almost here and it’s time to think about Mission Sunday. We will be stuffing UMCOR school bags as one of Wylie UMC’s Mission projects. The United Methodist Women has a challenge for you! There are 300 school bags and there are contents still required to stuff them! We need:
ruled paper (notebook paper, spiral notebooks or lined legal pads)
pencils (unsharpened with erasers)
scissors (blunt tip only).
Can you help while school supplies are still on sale? Bring school supplies to the black shelf in the foyer marked UMCOR. Thank you for your support. For any questions, please contact Peggy Wilson at [email protected].
John’s Epistle Page 6
Three Sundays ago one of the members of the church made a comment about the creed we
used in 9:30 worship. She was accustomed to seeing and saying The Apostles’ Creed. That particular
Sunday and for a couple of Sundays since, we used as our affirmation of faith another creed. Our
current Hymnal and our Book of Worship have in them nine different creeds and a revision of one
of them. [If you want to look at the creeds, they begin at #880.]
The Apostles’ Creed is probably the most familiar to most UMs of today. It was used begin-
ning in the early third century at baptisms. For some people it causes problems due to language. For
instance the use of the word ‘catholic.’ The word means ‘universal,’ and a footnote is used to define,
the word as used in the creed. It is the creed used in Protestant and Roman Catholic Churches, but
its meaning is not to the Roman Church per say. When the Hymnal Revision Committee presented
its report to the General Conference of 1988 it was amended to have the footnote whereever the
creed is used in the Hymnal.
The creed has traditionally included the phrase ‘he descended into hell.’ John Wesley used
the creed with that phrase and retained it in all of his uses of the creed. It was omitted in the 1905
and 1935 Methodist hymnals, and included as a footnote in the 1966 Methodist Hymnal. The line
literally means ‘he went down to the lower regions’ and underscores the assertion of Jesus’ death in
the previous line. It may also refer to a teaching in I Peter 3:18-20. It is probably better translat-
ed as ‘He descended to the dead’ and is so used in the ecumenical version (#882).
I grew up using the so-called “Korean Creed” (#884), originally written by the Korean Meth-
odist Church in 1930 and revised by two Korean Methodists. The creed we have recently used is a
product of the United Church of Canada and is widely used in the areas closest to the U.S. – Canadi-
an border and throughout Canada. It is #883 in the UM Hymnal.
Creeds have been used or recited as statements of the Church’s faith, drawing Christians
together in faith in the world. We use an off-shoot of a creed in our worship as the opening: ‘Do you
know who you are?’ and ‘What’s your job description?’
{More on creeds in future editions of the newsletter.}
Grace and peace, Pastor John Taylor
A STATEMENT OF FAITH OF THE UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA (United Methodist Hymnal, #883)
We are not alone, we live in God's world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God's presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER FOR WYLIE ISD
Volunteers are a vital part of student success! Volunteers include, but are not limited to, PTA
organizations, booster clubs, cheerleading squads, dance squads (athletic and fine arts) and any
other Wylie ISD student organizations where adults will be working with students other than their
own children at district sponsored events. Student teachers and observers are also required to
complete the volunteer application.
Application Process
To become a volunteer, please complete the Wylie ISD on-line volunteer application. Wylie ISD
contracts with DCS Information Systems, a third party vendor, to complete a criminal history check
on all volunteers. An authorization and consent form is included in the application.
VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONS MAY TAKE UP TO ONE WEEK TO PROCESS. If after one week you
have not been contacted regarding your volunteer status, please contact the Human Resources
Department. Your volunteer application is a confidential matter and you are not allowed to contact
campus staff members regarding
your status.
Once you are approved, you will
be able to volunteer in the district
throughout the school year. Wylie
ISD requires all volunteers to
complete the volunteer application
each school year. Thank you for
your being an active part of our
students' success!

residents through the Texas Ramp Project program and provide funds for
the Helping Hands and Family Promise Ministries, both of which provide
physical and financial assistance to families in need.
After golf there will be a dinner as well as plenty of prizes.
Player and sponsor registration forms will be available on the church’s
website later this week. For more information on the tournament please
contact Steve Oliver at 214-675-5760, e-mail [email protected] or

It is with heartfelt joy and unending thanks that Paula and I wish to convey how blessed we are by the generosity and love that the Texas Ramp Committee and our Wylie United Methodist Men chose to bestow upon us. The ramp is going to be such a great help for me when I get to go home. I am so looking forward to coming home and using it. I could absolutely have no greater brothers in Christ. Bless everyone of you. There are not enough ways to say thank you! I also would like to thank every one for their prayers, cards, and visits. It has all meant so very much to me, and the flowers have been a bright spot in my room. We are truly blessed in having the best church family ever. Love from both of us, John and Paula Scanlan

PRAYER: FLOODING IN DETROIT On Monday August 11, 2014, a record rainfall
hit the city of Detroit, Michigan, and
surrounding communities, causing flash
flooding and widespread power outages.
Three people died that day, and life changed
for thousands.
Sixteen United Methodist churches and six parsonages in the Detroit Renaissance District
experienced significant flooding. Thousands of homes were affected. Some residents, like
me, had rainwater in our basements; many had raw sewage flood their homes.
UMCOR responded by sending 1,300 cleaning buckets. Volunteers have been mobilized. The
cleanup is just starting.
Gracious God, you have created all. Forgive us for our lack of gratitude and gracious use of
the earth.
Thank you for the gift of your son, who lived among us.
Our connectional church reminds us we can work together in your name, to serve our
neighbors and respond to suffering around the world. Through these acts of love, we are
reminded of your power and grace.

Market, November 2 and 9.]

B.I.G. Feed Page 13
Thank you to everyone who supported the B.I.G. Feed Library Your contributions of children’s books and serving as librarians helped this
ministry grow! In the past 2 or 3 years, we averaged about 400 books
checked out each summer. In 2014, we checked out 631 books! The ladies
who checked out books this year were good salespeople! Because of you,
lots of children had the opportunity to continue reading and learning
throughout the summer. They were more ready for school when it started
on August 25. We’ve made a difference in their lives!
Congratulations to our B.I.G. Feed team! They made 4013 sandwiches
(and consequently 4013 lunches) that went to our neighbors just down
the road during the summer while school was out (and consequently
school lunches were not available). That’s the work of the church.
George Whitley has coordinated the B.I.G. Feed for 6 years now. He is increasing his work in the
prison ministry and will no longer be available for this leadership. He would be glad to talk to YOU
about what is involved in this critically important position. Summer 2015 seems a long way off, but
we need to be listening to God’s call NOW about who can lead B.I.G. Feed next summer. Please get
in touch with a pastor or the church staff (or George) with any of your thoughts.
These are some of the notes to the B.I.G. Feed workers:
“Muchas gracias pro su apoyo durante este verono yo mi familia apreciamos los lonche gra-
cias y que Dios los bendiga a cado uno de ustedes y su familia. Thank ya’ll for the lunches.”
“Thank you – Karla”
“Thank you for your time and bringing us lunches this summer. It’s been fun, thanks for everything. – Melinda”
“Mucos gracias por todo este teimpo y le dieron lonces a mis hijos. Dios los bendiga. Senora Dodrion”
“Thank you for all the lunches you have us. – Alan”
“Thank you for the lunches and supporting the food for the ones who don’t have food to eat. Thank you. – Melissa”
“Thank you guys for all the free lunches! I love the sandwiches. You guys are so nice. Me and my siblings appreciate!”
“Thank you for your food that you gave us all this summer.”
“Thank you for your food that you have gave us for this summer.”
“Thank you for the lunch. – Arlene”
