2 WYOMING TENNIS

Wyoming Tennis OutlookThe Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team and third

year head coach Kati Gyulai are certainly looking forward to the beginning of the 2011 spring season. With a solid group of returning players and a few additions, they will continue to build the program towards the top of the Mountain West Conference.

“We certainly had a successful year in 2010,” said Gyulai. “This season is different because now the team believes in the goals we set because they have seen and achieved most of those goals. With a young team like ours last year you always struggle with getting them to believe. Players must go through the experience to have confidence in what they can achieve. We are excited to get started because we know how close we were to beating all the teams in the MWC.”

The Cowgirls have high expectations as they return five starters and seven total returning letterwinners to a squad who wrapped up the season with a program best 14-8 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the MWC to finish third in the league. The 14 wins and five conference victories were the most ever in school history, plus the third place finish was the highest a Wyoming team has ever placed in league play. They defeated three conference foes for the first time in school history with wins over BYU, New Mexico and San Diego State, and narrowly lost to eventual conference champion TCU, 4-3.

“One of our goals was to finish in the top three of the MWC and we accomplished that,” Gyulai added. “Another goal was to be nationally ranked, which was also reached. Simona and Kim were ranked 32nd in the nation in doubles which got them invited to the most prestigious tournament the ITA All-American where they faced off against the best in the country. I believe that now when opponents play us they will do so with the knowledge that they will be facing one of the best teams in the nation. That type of respect is something we must now defend. We will no longer be the underdogs as we were in most cases last year. It is one of our goals to become one of the top teams in the region year after year as well as to move up in the national rankings.”

A big factor in all of the team’s success will be led by several individuals including seniors Rebecca Berger, Kim van Ginkel and Carly Van Hollen.

Berger finished her junior year with a 21-14 overall record, while going 12-8 in dual play in the spring. She ranks first all-time in doubles victories with 55 and is tied for fifth with 56 singles victories.

“Rebecca had an outstanding spring season, going 5-3 in conference play post shoulder surgery. The shoulder feels better and it is stronger which will allow Rebecca to push her limits to achieve even greater results. As a senior we expect her to provide a lot maturity and leadership to the team.”

van Ginkel earned All-MWC honors in doubles play with her partner Simona Synkova. They finished with an 11-7 record and 4-4 in conference action, while finishing ranked 59th nationally and fourth in the Mountain Region. In singles play, she went 28-8 overall and 6-2 in MWC play.

“Kim had a great spring semester and earned All-MWC conference honors. She is a veteran on this team and I expect her

to continue working hard and winning matches.”

T h e o t h e r senior starter for the Cowgirls is Carly Van Hollen. She was hampered by injuries during the spring, but finished 13-6 in doubles action and 4-7 in singles play.

“Carly struggled with injuries last

spring. She is now healthy, hungry to contribute and should play a critical role in providing leadership to her teammates.”

The Cowgirls will also seek strong play from sophomores Alexandra Kovacs, Sasa Nemcova and Simona Synkova. An All-Conference selection during her freshman year, Kovacs went 21-15 in singles play and 21-8 in doubles action. Sasa Nemcova had a solid first year with a 22-12 mark and 13-8 in dual play, along with going 14-8 in doubles play. Synkova and her partner Kim van Ginkel earned All-Conference honors after going 11-7 overall and 4-4 in league play. She also finished with a 15-6 singles record.

“Alexandra earned MWC conference honors as a freshman. I expect more maturity from her and to contribute positively to the team.

“Sasa has been a solid contributor in our line-up. Last year, she struggled with injuries and we hope that she can stay injury free to continue improving and contributing.

“Simona earned All-MWC conference honors last spring and a doubles national ranking during the fall. I expected her to continue improving and hopefully this season she can finish with both a singles and doubles ranking.”

The other returning letterwinner is Caryn Wykert who adds depth to the squad.

“Caryn has not seen a lot of playing time because of the depth we have in the line-up. I look for her to continue improving this year.”

There will be a couple new faces this season as the Cowgirls welcome two newcomers to the squad. They are Madison Gerard (Jackson, Wyo.) and Veronica Popovici (Piatra Neamt, Romania).

Veronica Popovici was one of the top juniors and senior singles and doubles player. She was

ranked on the Sony Ericcson Tour in both singles and doubles. “Veronica is a disciplined player. She has had success on the

ITF/WTA circuit and brings that experience to our team. I expect her to have an immediate impact in the line-up.”

Gerard joins the Cowgirl program after a four-year career at Jackson Hole High School. She was a two-time All-State selection, while helping her team to two State Championships.

“She is one of the top high-school players in Wyoming. I expect her to add depth to the line-up and to possibly challenge for a spot.”

The Cowgirls will have a difficult non-conference schedule in order to prepare them for conference play later in the season. They will open up the spring season on Friday, January 21 as they travel Cheyenne, Wyo. to host Mesa State followed by a road match against the Northern Colorado Bears, on Sunday, Jan. 23. Mountain West Conference play will start on Thursday, March 31 as they take on the San Diego State Aztecs in Las Vegas.

“One of our goals was to strengthen the non-conference schedule to help us with our ranking and to get us ready for conference play. We start off early against Nebraska who finished the year ranked in the Top 50 and from there we play against another ranked team. I don’t anticipate many easy matches this spring for us. If we want to achieve our goal of being ranked one of the top teams in the nation we have to compete and win these tough matches.”

In all, the Cowgirls wil l have four home matches throughout the season with non-conference opponents Eastern Washington a n d W e b e r S t a t e . C o n f e r e n c e h o m e ma tches t h i s yea r feature the Colorado State Rams, on Friday, April 22, and the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Sunday, April 24. The MWC tournament will be held in Ft. Collins. from Wednesday, April 27th through Saturday, April 30th.

A Vision for the FutureThe University of Wyoming broke ground June 30, 2010 on UW’s new Indoor Tennis Facility. The new facility is located adjacent to the existing indoor courts at the UW Tennis Facility on the east side of the UW campus north of Willett Drive.

“We are very excited about the future of our tennis program, and this will move us another step forward in our program’s development. This facility will enhance both the UW tennis program and the tennis community in Wyoming at large,” said UW Athletics Director Tom Burman.

The new Indoor Tennis Facility will expand the current indoor courts from two courts to six. Space allocations for other facilities such as locker rooms, restrooms and storage will be provided in the expansion.

“We are very excited about the construction of our new state-of-the-art indoor facility,” said UW head tennis coach Kati Gyulai. “This is a very special project that the University has been working on for years. I want to thank everyone at the University of Wyoming who played a part in allowing us to move forward with the construction.”

The anticipated cost of the facility is $2.75 million. It will be built by Sampson Construction. The project is expected to be completed by late Spring of 2011.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOEThe familiar fight song of the University of Wyoming athletics teams is Ragtime Cowboy Joe. This song is performed by the band as UW teams enter the playing surface, following a score or big play, and to fire up the fans. The Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes traditionally sing this following each Wyoming victory.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOE“He always sings raggy music to the cattle as he swings back and forward in the saddle, on a horse - a pretty good horse! He’s got a syncopated gaiter, and you ought to hear the meter to the roar of his repeater; how they run - yes run! - when they hear that he’s ‘a-comin’, cause the western folks all know, he’s a high-falootin’, rootin, tootin’, son of a gun from ol’ Wyoming, Ragtime Cowboy, Talk about your Cowboy, Ragtime Cowboy Joe.”

THE STAMPEDEThe Stampede is the official athletics fan club for University of Wyoming students. The Stampede is one BIG fan club for all 17 NCAA Division I sports at the University of Wyoming. The Stampede leads Wyoming fans

in spirit, tradition and passion for Wyoming Athletics. Members of the Stampede receive multiple benefits, and as a student at UW, The Stampede is the best way to become involved in Wyoming Athletics.

COWBOY NICKNAMEThe nickname “Cowboys” was applied to Wyoming athletic teams as early as 1891 - two years before the first official football game. The story is that the Wyoming pick-up football team appealed to a 220 pound cowpuncher, Fred Bush, for help in a game against the Cheyenne Soldiers. Bush signed up for a course or two and came out for the team. When he trotted onto the field decked out in a checkered shirt and Cowboy hat, someone yelled, “Hey, look at the Cowboy!” Since many of the members of the team were also ex-cowboys, the name stuck. When women’s sports were added at UW, the nickname of Cowgirls was applied to those squads.

COWBOY JOE PONYCowboy Joe IV, a fourth generation Wyoming mascot, trots around War Memorial Stadium after each Cowboy touchdown, a tradition which started in 1950 when the Farthing Family of Cheyenne made a generous donation of a young pony to become Wyoming’s mascot. Cowboy Joe also represents UW in parades around the region, appears in Tailgate Park on football game days and leads the band and team in the pre-game Cowboy Walk. This beautiful little pony is very popular with Cowboy & Cowgirl fans of all ages.

SPIRIT SQUADSThe primary purpose of Wyoming’s Spirit Squads is to support the Cowboys and Cowgirls, and to serve as public relations ambassadors for the University of Wyoming. The UW cheer and pom squads work hard to get the crowd involved, lead cheers, entertain, and to boost the level of fan excitement and support to new extremes. In addition to their game-day involvement at UW Athletics’ contests, Wyoming Spirit Squad members also make numerous appearances at university activities, functions, programs, charitable and public events. Cowboy and Cowgirl sports are flying high and the Wyoming Spirit Squads are leading the way.

UW’S LOGO - STEAMBOAT One of the nation’s best, and most distinctive logos, the image on Wyoming’s uniforms depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has been a part of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department since the early 1920’s, when UW Equipment Manger Deane Hunton obtained a photograph of a cowboy, Guy Holt, riding the world famous bucking horse Steamboat. Hunton had the photo made into a logo, which was then utilized by UW athletic teams. While there are differing opinions on exactly which horse and rider is depicted on all of UW’s athletic uniforms today, it is the symbol that is important. The bucking horse and rider represents the toughness, and the never-say-die spirit that is Wyoming. A statue honoring the symbol called ‘Fanning a Twister’, was erected at the north entrance of UW’s athletics facilities in 1991.

BROWN AND GOLD COLORSThe story behind the colors of the University of Wyoming dates back to 1895. In the spring of that year, the first ever UW Alumni Banquet was held. Decorations for the banquet included Brown-Eyed Susans, a flower native of Southeastern Wyoming. The Alumni were so impressed with the colors (brown and yellow) and the beauty of the flowers that they decided to select these colors as the official school colors at UW. Currently, the colors are described as brown and gold.

WESTERN THUNDER MARCHING BANDThe University of Wyoming Marching Band - “Western Thunder” - features musicians from nearly every major on campus, who perform for thousands of football fans each year at home and road Cowboy football games. The Wyoming Pep Band plays at numerous other UW sporting events.

PISTOL PETEPistol Pete is a UW student mascot who works alongside the Wyoming Spirit Squads, encouraging the crowd and getting fans involved in the game.

Spend some time here and you’ll agree that much of UW’s character is shaped by this great “home on the range.” Laramie, the location of the main campus, is a safe, friendly community of 30,000 people. Nestled between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains in southeastern Wyoming, it’s a beautiful, unspoiled place with a special life-style.

The campus extends over 785 tree-shaded acres. There’s an attractive mix of modern and traditional structures; many were built with native Wyoming sandstone. It’s a place where the sun shines 320 days each year. It’s hard to be gloomy here. When you view it from 7,200 feet, you see things more clearly. But it’s not just a pretty place; it’s also a place that works.

Up-to-date facilities support the learning and research mission that makes UW special. There are classrooms with state-of-the art computer technology, laboratories with the latest equipment, excellent libraries, computer systems with universal Internet access, and a long list of premier research facilities both on campus and in the surrounding area.

Great people, great surroundings, and a great education...it's all here at the University of Wyoming.

Photos on this Page:We wish to thank the Wyoming Division of Tourism for the photos featured on this page. (Top) The Tetons and Snake River. (Middle Top) Devil's Tower National Monument. (Middle Bottom) Yellowstone Falls. (Bottom) Old Faithful.

They say it’s beauty is like no other, and you fall in love with its people.

Wyoming, it is like no place on earth. Within it’s boundaries is America’s first and largest national park, Yellowstone. The unbounding beauty there includes “Old Faithful” geyser and Yellowstone Lake, the world’s largest high-mountain lake. There is Yellowstone Falls, so awe-inspiring, it’ll take your breath away. There are over 260 different species of animals and birds located there. Wyoming’s wonders seem to be unending. There is Grand Teton National Park, whose centerpiece is the spectacular Teton Mountain Range. There is Devil’s Tower, America’s first national monument. There is the world’s largest mineral hot springs located in Thermopolis. There is the beauty of Ten Sleep Canyon and a hundred other places.

For breathtaking beauty, Wyoming is unmatched. Its reputation brings millions of visitors to its borders each year. Plus, some of the best skiing in America can be found in Wyoming. Tourists and sportsmen can’t wait to get here to enjoy the clean mountain air and limitless outdoor attractions.

The history of the great American West can be heard whistling through the trees of Wyoming. Wyoming had an historic place in the taming of the West in the late 1800’s. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were two of Wyoming’s most famous citizens during the era of lawlessness. There remain plenty of reminders of an age that will live forever in American lore.

People are Wyoming’s strongest resource. These folks are down to earth, friendly and helpful. And, oh how proud they are of their Cowboys and Cowgirls. Wyoming has some of the best fans in America. As their only four-year university, Wyoming folks are tremendously supportive of their teams.

Yet, as down to earth as they are, many Wyomingites are on the cutting edge of politics, entertainment and business. Among some of the most famous are: former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney; Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dean Conger, former chief photographer of the National Geographic Society; Curt Gowdy, the most decorated national sportscaster in history; Alan Simpson, former United States Senator; Gerry Spence, attorney and television personality; and General Pete Schoomaker, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff.

For great people, great scenery and a great education, there is no place quite like Wyoming.

Academic SupportOffice of Academic SupportA student-athlete has time commitments and academic requirements that no other college student has to manage. Balancing practices, road trips, and contests with tests, papers, and classes isn’t easy. But a student-athlete isn’t alone in this endeavor!

The Office of Academic Support in Athletics (OAS) exists solely to help you on your journey through college athletics. Simply put, our mission is to give you all the academic support you need so you can meet your goal of earning the best college education possible while participating in the sport you love. Whether it be helping you find that tutor for the big Math exam, or to help you pick the right classes to add a Biology Minor, or just to talk about the big match coming up; the OAS strives to help you succeed.

Most importantly, the OAS helps to bridge your communication with professors and deans as well as to help inform you of NCAA academic eligibility rules. We have an excellent relationship with University administration, faculty and deans and work to keep them aware of student-athlete road trips and contests. The academic support staff visits regularly with every student-athlete to be certain they are making progress toward their degree and assists them with understanding and meeting NCAA academic standards. Our coordinators also provide support on matters such as registration, degree planning and compliance with University of Wyoming and Mountain West Conference policies and procedures.

Finally, the OAS offers specific programs designed to assist each student-athlete in achieving their athletic and academic goals. Staffed by five full-time coordinators, the entire staff is dedicated to achieving the program goal of providing comprehensive services to ensure a successful student-athlete experience — academically, personally, vocationally and athletically. The Office of Academic

Support offers a full range of services in the following areas:

1. Academic DevelopmentThe core of our academic-support program is the tutorial and mentor program. A qualified staff of tutors and mentors assist students in clarifying their study material and, in the case of travel, help students catch up on what material was missed. In addition to the tutorial program, attention is given to each individual in the development of their class schedule. All UW student-athletes must take a minimum of twelve hours of classes each semester, which directly apply to their chosen degree, and appropriate scheduling is a critical priority. Study skills assistance is available for those who need special help in areas including test preparation, note taking and time-management techniques. Finally, each student-athlete’s academic progress is closely monitored during the semester for such things as attendance, current grade and class participation. Steps are taken to address deficiencies identified by student-athlete progress reports on an individual basis.

2. Career DevelopmentThe purpose of obtaining a college education is to prepare an individual for meaningful employment following graduation. Needless to say, the act of choosing a useful major is indeed a challenging task considering the multitude of possibilities. Career counseling is available to assist student-athletes in the very important process of selecting a major that will lead to a desired career. The Office of Academic Support continues to establish a career network that will assist students secure employment after graduation.

3. Personal Growth and DevelopmentThe OAS offers various speakers, presentations, and training sessions through the NCAA “CHAMPS/Life Skills” program, which emphasizes the importance of the “entire student-athlete.” Student-athletes are encouraged to not only graduate and participate in sports, but to continue to grow personally and professionally while at the University of Wyoming. Various recent presentations have featured issues such as Drugs/Alcohol Abuse, Becoming Your Personal Best, Sexual Awareness and Responsibility, and Cultural Diversity.

From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 12th year, the MWC has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West Conference has marked several achievements over its first 11 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in and win two BCS bowl games. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MWC was founded in 1999. The Mountain West also ranks second in No. 1 draft picks in the NFL, NBA and MLB over the last six years with three overall. The Mountain West Conference is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West Conference boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Utah). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s most recent member, TCU. The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. On June 17, 2010, Commissioner Craig Thompson announced the addition of Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference, effective July 1, 2011. 2009-10 in Review From the gridiron to the diamond, Mountain West Conference teams enjoyed a banner year in 2009-10. Multiple MWC women’s tennis teams appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year with TCU, UNLV and Utah qualifying in 2010. For the second straight year, multiple MWC men’s tennis teams also participated in the postseason, with BYU and TCU earning bids to the NCAA field. In addition, the league qualified another seven men and women for individual postseason competition.
