Chris Defendis
My role as VP, Distribution at HBO requires me to wear many hats including sales, marketing,
budgeting, strategic analysis, and operations. I’ve also been involved in professional non-profits for many years and have
held the roles of President, Vice President, and event chair.
The priorities I would support would consist of on-field and off-field initiatives. On-field, I feel there needs to be
consistency in quality of coaches and methods taught. Too often children are disadvantaged because a volunteer coach
has the time, but not the expertise to effectively teach proper skills. Off-field, helping WYSI attract new families into the
organization needs to be a priority. Westfield is in the middle of a population boom. My family moved here 2.5 years ago
and we know how difficult it can be to plant roots. WYSI can be an integral part of a family’s introduction to the community.
I’m a big believer of the mantra, “be the change you want to see.” I don’t like to hear people complain about a situation
or a process. Rather, get involved and help develop solutions. I think WYSI does a great job, but there are always areas
to improve. This is especially true as Westfield grows and sports becomes a bigger part of our identity. Westfield is
transitioning from a small Indiana town to a large, vibrant community. I’ve lived in the city and suburbs of Chicago, and the
suburbs of New York City, and feel I can help Westfield/WYSI take the next step in the evolution.
Yes.
I have 2 children, boy age 9/girl age 6, and they’ve been involved in soccer, basketball, cross-country, and baseball.
I’ve served as an assistant coach for AA baseball, head coach for AA baseball, head coach for rec all-star baseball, and
am currently head coach of the 9U Green travel baseball team.

WYSI has been more than a great sports organization providing kids with the opportunity to have fun, learn, and mature through team participation. WYSI is also a close-knit community providing the opportunity to development relationships with other parents and players. I would like the opportunity to give back to WYSI family by helping operate and improve the organization.

If elected, would you have the time and commitment to attend all monthly WYSI Board meetings and contribute as needed to improve WYSI? Yes, I will have time for board meetings and day to day role requirements. My complete focus will be effectively managing and improving WYSI.

WYSI BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPLICATION FORM

Describe your past experience with WYSI and/or other youth sports organizations including coaching, volunteering, leadership positions, etc: I have three boys who have been playing WYSI baseball, football, and basketball since 2010. I have been a WYSI baseball head coach and assistant coach, for two teams respectively, every year since 2010. I started coaching WYSI instructional league baseball in 2010 and have coached single A, Double A (two years), and Triple A, the past five years. I have also been selected to be the Majors WYSI baseball league commissioner for 2016.

I have also been an assistant coach for WYSI football (three years) and basketball (one year).

Describe your relevant experience and skills that could contribute to the WYSI Board’s effectiveness: I have a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting and a master’s degree in Organizational Development. My education directly aligns with WYSI financial, fundraising, and overall development and management needs. I have also been an information technology and business process consultant for over twenty years. My professional roles have included strategy, business case development, and proposing and managing small and large scale business projects.

Describe areas of interest or priorities you would support for the Board if elected: I would begin my role by developing a detailed understanding of WYSI’s management, development, and change needs. I envision the following priorities: 1) League parent satisfaction and improvement suggestions (i.e., assess and where appropriate implement change), 2) Ensuring processes for evaluating and selecting players for WYSI all-star and travel teams are effective and objective, and ensuring the best players are selected for each WYSI team (i.e., Put the best teams forward representing WYSI and Westfield when playing other league and city teams), 3) Understanding and helping WYSI fund raising and event requirements; and 4) Performing specific day to day requirements for the director role I’m asked to fulfill.

Beyond anything stated above, why would you like to serve as a WYSI Board member?

WYSI BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPLICATION FORM

Describe your past experience with WYSI and/or other youth sports organizations including coaching, volunteering, leadership positions, etc: I served on the Board and as the Treasurer for the past 2 terms (2013 to 2016). My husband, Jason Ogle, and I have been involved since 2008 when our oldest son started playing flag football. I have previously volunteered for Team Mom, served as the Coach’s wife when my husband coached numerous seasons, sponsored our son’s teams and helped in various ways with football through the 2014 season. I helped with football commissioner duties during the 2015 transition season and was received the Eric Schafer Volunteer of the Year award by the football board. As a member of Westfield Family Karate since 2009, I have volunteered as a helper and instructor for classes; leading a black belt preparation course in 2012.

Describe your relevant experience and skills that could contribute to the WYSI Board’s effectiveness: My past 2 terms on the board evidence my abilities to identify and implement meaningful policies, maintain accurate and reliable accounting records and help the organization stake its claim on the future as we investigate opportunities for infrastructure projects in coordination with the city. While I bring a valuable history, I also have a vision for helping the organization grow; providing sustainable programming for the youth of Westfield for years to come and ensuring our mission is fulfilled at the highest levels. I have a solid working relationship with our commissioners, and possess an understanding of the needs each sport demands. I am committed to our mission and for the greater good of the Westfield community. As a CPA and partner in a public accounting firm, I have several years of experience in financial statement preparation and analysis; knowledgeable of required filings for federal and state. This will ensure our organization meets high standards of reporting to our members as well as compliance with 501c3 reporting. I have served on my communities’ HOA for 14 years and was recently elected to my 9th term as Treasurer. This position includes developing and maintaining a $14,000 budget, paying bills and monitoring cash flow with monthly reporting. I have previously served as President of Construction Financial Management Association Board of Directors which has provided me many leadership experiences. I have served on many other boards and committees over the years with an understanding of general operations and requirements. I possess strong leadership, communications and organizational skills.

Describe areas of interest or priorities you would support for the Board if elected: I have an interest in serving as Treasurer and in any other capacity required to ensure the success of WYSI and its mission and programs.

Beyond anything stated above, why would you like to serve as a WYSI Board member? I am passionate about exercise and nutrition, especially for our youth. The success of our children in high school sports and beyond is directly connected to a thriving youth sports program.

coaching, volunteering, leadership positions,

etc: I have been involved with WYSI through girls basketball and softball. I have served as a head coach in softball from instructional through 10U (4 years). I have also been an assistant coach in 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th grade leagues (past 4 years). Prior to WYSI, I served as a youth through college basketball official for 14 years. In college, I volunteered for two years for Sports Night with local youth.
