��க்கம்வ ால், யாத�ப் ிரகாஸர் உ நிஷத் �ாக்யங்களுக்கு, அர்த்தம் பசால்லிக் பகாண்டு

இருந்தார். அப்வ ாது அ�ர், “ ஸர்�ம் கலு இதம் ப்ரம்ம “ என்ற உ நிஷத் �ாக்யத்திற்கு அத்வை�த

மதப் டி அர்த்தம் கூறி-னார். ஆனால் இவை7யாழ்�ாரின் மனம் அவைத ஒப் �ில்வை9. அ�ர்

�ிசிஷ்டாத்வை�த சித்தாந்தத்தின் டி, ப ாருள்கூற, குரு�ிற்கு வகா ம் �ந்தது.

“ இனி நீ இங்கு இருக்க வ�ண்டாம். உனக்கு உகந்த இடத்வைதத் வதர்ந்து பகாள் “ என்று

கூறி�ிடவ�, ராமாநுஜரும் தம் வீட்டிற்குத் திரும் ினார். அ�ருவைடய தாயாரும், “ நீ டித்தது

ஆச்சார்யன் நியமனப் டி, காஞ்சி �ந்த ப ரியநம் ிகள் சாவை9க் கிணற்றி-லிருந்து

திருமஞ்சனத்திற்குத் தீர்த்தம் பகாண்டு �ந்து பகாண்டிருந்த இவை7யாழ்�ாவைர சந்தித்து, “ ப்ரம்மா சி� : சதமக : ரமஸ் �ராடித்வய வத ி யஸ்ய மஹி மார்ண� �ிப்ருஷ : வத “ என்கிற

ஸ்வ9ாகத்வைதச் பசால்9, ராமாநுஜர், “ இவைத அரு7ிச்பசய்த மஹான் யார் ? அ�வைர நான்

சந்திக்க வ�ண்டும் “ என்று அ�வைரக் வகட்க, அ�ர், “ அதவைன அரு7ிச்-பசய்த�ர் ஸ்ரீஆ7�ந்தார்

ஸ்�ாமிகள் என் �ர். அ�ர் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்தில் இருக்-கிறார். நம்முடன் �ந்தால் அ�வைர

தரிஸிக்க9ாம். “ என்று கூற, இவை7-யாழ்�ாரும் திருமஞ்சன தீர்த்தத்வைதக் வகாயிலில் பகாண்டு

வசர்த்து �ிட்டு, வ ரரு7ா7ன், ப ருந்வத�ித் தாயார் நியமனத்துடன், தன் தாயாரி-டமும்

These three postings celebrating our ThAyAr will serve as an introduction to the amrutham that we anticipate from the pen of Dr.V.N.VedanthA Desikan on Sri KomaLA DhaNdakam to be realized through the intercession and persuasive powers of our dear Sri MuraLi Rangaswamy.

Our sincere thanks to Sri Rangaswamy for this mahOpakAram. In this sadhas of great VidvAns adorned by Sri VeLukkudi KrishNan and others , adiyEn seeks their indulgence for my feeble attempt to offer salutations to our Mother in my limited , lisping way .May this sadhas accept these offerings with adiyEn's sathsangha PraNAmams .

Her dhyAna SlOkam salutes Her as Sakala Bhuvana MaathA , SaagarAdhIsa Jaatha, PraNamath avana KaamA and BhAskara KshEthra DhAmA in the first half of the dhyAna slOkam . In the second half , the dhyAnam focuses on Her auspicious attributes as sakalitha Bhaya moolA , Saarnga DhnvAnukoolA , pravimala Mukha BimbhA and as KomaLAmbhA .

As we stand before Her in Her sannidhi , the waves of Aanandham flow over us and engulf us. Our AchAryA's Sri Sookthis on our ThAyAr echo in our ears as our eyes feast on Her SubhAsrayam and Her DivyAbharaNams. Her Abhaya , DhAna Hasthams mesmerize us through the assurances given by our Sakala Bhuvana MaathA.

Sri AaLavandhAr was the prathama pradarsakar of Sri Devi's Vaibhavam through the quintessential ChathusslOki , which was commented upon by Sarvaj~na Saarvabhouma AacchAn PiLLai and Sarva Tantra Svathanthrar , Swami Desikan to bring out the VisEshArthams . Such is the glory of the Mahimai of Sri KomaLAmbhA , who is SaakshAth MahA Lakshmi Herself Celebrated by ChathusslOki of AaLavandhAr , Sri Sthavam of KurEsar , Sri GuNa-Rathna KOsam of Bhattar , SaraNAgathi Gadhyam of Sri RaamAnujA and the Sri Sthuthi of Swami Desikan .

The connection between Sri KomaLAmbha of Thirukkudanthai and Sri RanganAyaki of Srirangam has been made clear from Sri RangarAjan's posting on the separation of the two VimAnams with their "contents" (PraNavAkruthi VimAnam of Srirangam and Vaidhikha VimAnam of Thriukkudanthai from the Moola VimAnam at Srirangam and the arrival of Sri AarAvamudhan at BhAskara KshEthram to fulfill the wishes of Hema Maharishi , the foster father of Sri KomaLavalli ThAyAr . Similarities between Sri RanganAyaki and Sri KomaLavalli and the eulogies on the former applying to the latter at Thirukkudanthai is therefore understandable.

AlavandhAr performed AchArya Vandhanams in the his sthOthra Rathnam and celebrated Sriman NaarAyaNan and asked " Ka: Sri Sriya: ? Ka: parama satthva SamAsraya: ? Ka: PuNdarIka Nayana: ? Ka: PurushOtthama:?". Next he went on to compose ChathusslOki , where he declared that PurushOtthaman as sarvaj~nan and Sarva Sakthan can not fully comprehend His Consort's Mahimai :

yasyAsthE mahimAnAm aathmana iva tvadh VallabhOpi Prabhu:naalam maathum iyathyA niravadhim nithyAnukoolam svatha:

(Meaning): Oh Isvari of all the worlds ! Oh PrANa Vallabhai of the Lord! Even the omnipotent and omniscient Lord of Yours can not succeed in fully comprehending Your limitless glories , natural and pervasive affection ( svabhAvika SarvathA priyathvam ) for Your children and Your nithya BhOgyathvam .

In the first slOkam of the ChathusslOki , AalavandhAr comes back to the PurushOtthama aspect of the Lord (KaanthasthE PurushOtthama:) and goes on to conclude," SririthyEva cha naama thE Bhagavathi BhrUma: Katham thvAm Vayam ? ". AlavandhAr states here that PurushOtthaman is her Lord, Adhi Seshan is both the bed and seat for her , Veda SvarUpiGarudan is her transport , the Moola prakruthi is the curtain that enchants the world , BrahmA and IndrA et al and their respective consorts are the Daasa and Daasi vargams for Her . Your name is Sri Devi . How can we even begin to praise You" asks AaLavandhAr .

KurEsar followed the lead shown by AalavandhAr and chimed in: " Devi Tvan mahimAvathir na HariNA naapi tvayA jn~AyathE ". KurEsar also composed first the four sthavms including Sri Vaikunta Sthavam and thencompletd his five sthavams with the Sri Sthavam to extol the glories of MahA Lakshmi . Similarly, ParAsara Bhattar composed Sri RangarAja Sthavam first and then had the fitting finale by composing Sri GuNarathna KOsam on Sri RanganAyaki.

AalavandhAr points out that the anugraham of our ThAyAr (Aravindha lOchana mana: KaanthA prasAdhAthruthE karhichith na SambhAvyathe) nothing ( Iha lOka BhOgam , Kaivalya BhOgam or Parama Padha BhOgam ) can be realized .

AalaVandhAr concludes his ChathusslOki with a mighty and fitting tribute to MahA Lakshmi :

SaanthAnantha mahA vibhUthi paramam yath Brahma roopam harE:Mootham Brahma tathOpi tathpriyataram ROOPAM YADHATHYADHBHUTHAMyAnyaani yathaa sukham viharathO roopANi sarvAni thaaniaahus svarianrUpa roopa vibhavair GaaDOpagUDAni thE -- Sri CahthusslOki : SlOkam 4

In an earlier posting, adiyEn has discussed the AakAra Thrya sampannA aspects of MahA Lakshmi . Here two AakArams of this KomaLAnghi are praised by AaLavandhAr. The UpAyathvam and UpEyathvam of the Lord and Her own roles in these two AakArams are celebrated here. During the UpAyathvam of the Lord , She performs PurushakAra Kruthyam (Intercession for us ) and does not leave her lord until He accepts her persistent pleas ; during the UpEyathvam , She stays together with Him without leaving Him for even a second to bless us with BhOgyAdisayam of the nithya sEshi dampathis. Thus , she does not part with the Lord at Sarva DEsa , Sarva Kaala , SarvAvasthais. This Piratti confers on her Lord , the name of SrinivAsan ( AhalahillEn iRayum yenRalarmEl Mangai Urai Maarbhan ).

This MahA Lakshmi with the thirunaamam of Komalavalli (p) resides at BhAskara KshEthram. Our Lord referred to Her as " ananyA hi mayA SitA

BhaaskarEna PrabhA yathA " and KomaLavalli (SitA) referred to Her husband as "ananyA RaaghavENaaham BhAskarENa PrabhA yathA". Swami Desikan in his turn saluted the parama VyOma BhAskara Taatvam of the Lord associated forever with the prabhai of SitA Devi at the very beginning of Sri Raghu Veera gadhyam :

"PrabhAvAn SeethayA dEvyA Parama VyOma Bhaaskara: ".

The parama VyOma ( ParamAkAsam /Sri Vaikuntam ) Bhaaskaran at Thirukkudanthai BhAskara KshEthram is AarAvamudhan . His inseparable Prabhai (lustre )is KomaLaavlli ThAyaar .

இன்று உ9கபமங்கிலும் க்தி மணம் கமழ்கிறது. நாத்திகர்களுக்குக்கூட

உள்ளூர க்தி திவை7க்க ஆரம் ித்து இருக்கிறது. இது �ரவ�ற்கத் தக்க

மாற்றம்தான். ஆனால் இன்று ப ரும் ாவ9ார் மனத்திலும் உண்வைமயான க்தி

இருக்கிறதா? என்று வயாசித்துப் ார்த்தால் அடிவயனுக்கு கிவைடக்கும் �ிவைட

இல்வை9 என் துதான். அப் டிபயன்றால் அதற்கு என்ன ப ாருள் என்று

வகட்டீர்க7ானால் ஒன்று நம்மிவைடவய வதான்றும் ய உணர்ச்சி ! நம் க�வை9கள்

நீங்க ஏதா�து ஒரு கடவு7ிடம் வ�ண்டிக்பகாள்கிவறாம். ஆனால் எல்9ா வ�ண்டுதல்கவை7யும் க�னித்துப் ார்த்தால் ஒன்று

பு9ப் டும். அது என்ன? அது எ�ரும் முதலில் தங்கள் காணிக்வைகவையச்

பசலுத்த �ிவை��தில்வை9. அப் டிபயன்றால் அ�ர்கள் க்தி ஒரு �ியா ாரம்

வ ான்றதா? இருக்கமுடியாது. ஏபனன்றால் நாம் ணத்வைத முதலில்

பகாடுத்தால்தான் �ியா ாரி ப ாருவை7வய நமக்குத்தரு�ான். ஆனால் இங்கு

அ�ர்கள் முதலில் எங்வக காணிக்வைகவையச் பசலுத்து கிறார்கள் ? அப் டிபயன்றால் அ�ர்கள் க்தி ண்டமாற்று முவைறயா ? என்றால் அது-வும்

இருக்கமுடியாது. ஏபனன்றால் ண்டமாற்று முவைறயில் ஒரு ப ாருவை7ப் ப றவ�ண்டுபமன்றாலும் உடவனவய நாம் நம் ப ாருவை7த் தயாராக

வை�த்திருந்து பகாடுக்கவ�ண்டும். ஆனால் அ�ர்கள் தங்கள் அ ி9ாவைஷ

பூர்த்தியவைடந்த ின்வ தங்கள் காணிக்வைக வையச்பசலுத்தப் வ ாகிறார்கள். ஆகவ� அது ண்டமாற்றுமுவைறயாகவும் இருக்க முடியாது. வமலும் அது

நிவைறவ�றும் என்ற உறுதியும் இல்வை9. அப் டிபயன்றால் அ�ர்கள் க்தி ஒரு

9ாட்டரி வ ான்றதா ? என்றால் அதுவும் இருக்கமுடியாது. ஏபனன்றால்

9ாட்டரியிலும் முதலில் ணத்-வைதக்பகாடுத்து 9ாட்டரி சீட்டு �ாங்க வ�ண்டும், ிறவக அதிர்ஷ்டத்வைத எதிர் வநாக்கி இருக்கவ�ண்டும். ஆக அதுவுமில்வை9.! 9ஞ்சம் ஒன்றில்தான் நாம் ணத்வைதவயா இல்வை9ப் ப ாருவை7வயா நம்

காரியத்வைத நிவைறவ�ற்றித்தரு �ருக்கு அ7ிக்கின்வறாம். நம் காரியத்வைக

அ�ர்கள் நிவைறவ�ற்றித்தர�ில்வை9பயன்றால் வ சி டி 9ஞ்சத்வைதக்-பகாடுக்க

வ�ண்டிய அ�சியமில்வை9வய !

அப் டிபயன்றால் அ�ர்கள் கடவுளுக்கு தங்கள் காணிக்வைககவை7 9ஞ்ச-மாகத்தான் ��ங்க முன்�ருகிறார்க7ா ? என்றால் �ிவைட ஆம் !. இ�ற்றிர்பகல்9ாம் அ�ர்கள் அறியாவைம ஒருகாரணம் என்றால், மிகமுக்-கியான காரணம் ஒன்று உண்டு !அது அ�ர்கள்மீவத அ�ர்களுக்கு

நம் ிக்வைகயில்வை9 ! என்றுதான் ப ாருள். ஏபனன்றால் அ�ர்களுக்குத் தங்கள்

க்தி உண்வைமயானது என்ற நம் ி இருந்திருந்தால், க�ாவைன

நம் ியிருப் ார்கள், காணிக்வைகவையயும் முதலிவ9வய பசலுத்தி இருப் ார்கள்

இல்வை9யா ? அப் டி அ�ர்கள் தங்கள் காணிக்வைககவை7 முதலில் பசலுத்தி�ிட்டு 9வைன உண்வைமயான க்தியுடன் எதிர் ார்த்தார்கவ7 யானால் எம்ப ருமான் நிச்சயம் அ�ர்கள் வகாரிக்வைககவை7 நிவைற வ�ற்றாமல்

இருக்க மாட்டான். இது உறுதி.

11. Depression is a virulent disease. But when we study its roots, we find that its real source lies in our attaching excessive importance to materialism, gross and subtle. When we overlook our spiritual strength and make too much our weaknesses and failures, we prepare the ground for a sad state of affairs. Sometimes our depression may wear a spiritual cloak and we may feel discouraged to rectify our own attitudes. Hence Krishna has emphasized the stilling of the emotive mind (the mind of desires and passions) and the senses, which receive the outward sense experiences and responding to them by the mental emotional and intellectual valuation reactions. Even these mental thoughts have to be stilled in the silence of self divine. It is because of these considerations, Krishna is exhorting us to follow the path of self-transformation in the verses above.12. The formative thought that is lurking in the mind is sankalpa (the seed) that sprouts and grows into a plant of desire. The desire which is like a spark to day is capable of developing into a conflagration tomorrow. It is, therefore, to be eliminated entirely with the weapon of discrimination and dispassion. The senses are safe only when freed from desire. Two kinds of desires are: (i). Those born of contact of the senses with their objects. In this case one has to avoid reaction. (ii). Those generated by our mind (will) – values, which are relinquished by the mind through determined contemplation and assertion that these values are entirely lack any kind of association with the self and at the same time fostering right values [Vide Krishna’s defining knowledge as cultivation of twenty values (virtues) – 13.7 – 11) – to be discussed later on. Hence is Krishna’s stress on controlling the mind from every possible angle and His warning to saadhaka of the danger of fall until the mind is completely established in the self. One has to tame the mind gradually with insight and a sympathetic

understanding of its several urges that lie dormant within it. Morality is the foundation of becoming sinless and sinlessness is the condition of becoming a yogi. So we will have to practise this and live a pure, chaste, moral, and spiritual life. “To achieve this we do not need a mediator or Christ as the Christian theology emphasizes. The real and unfailing mediator is the Power of discrimination”. – (6.24 -26) 13. What is the effect of fixing the mind in the silence of the Divine or the indwelling self? Krishna goes on to explain that such an illumined yogi gains self-realisation and consequent experiencing of supreme bliss resulting from contact with the self. In verses (6.27-32), continuing the discussion on the self-illumined and integrated yogi, Krishna beautifully brings out the culminating vision of such an integrated yogi (Jnaana – Bhakta) – his three-fold integration - a subject of such great importance that deserves to be treated as a separate and independent essay 7 to follow.

Proper performance of Karma yoga would ensure this.[Gita emphasizes integration at all levels – theory and practice, metaphysics and ethics, contemplation and action.]

Introduction: The description of the culminating vision of an integrated yogin who has perfected karma Yoga and subsequently realized the self is the most enlightening and fascinating in the world’s religious literature (6.29 -32), which are of great metaphysical, psychological and ethical significance and assert the unity of all existence in a spiritual self, which is both impersonal and personal. The Lords stress on social attitude and action (6.31, 32) of the yogin highlights the psychological and ethical importance of these verses. The integrated Yogin is one in whom the saamkhyan ideal of samnyaasa and the Yogic path of unitive action (karma Yoga) are integrated. Such a yogi is more of a realist, making allowances for an organically conceived process of spiritual development.

TALAICHCHANGA NAANMADIYAM ( Talaisangadu ) This Divya kshetram is located in Talaichchangaadu village close to Aakkur near Sirkazhi, between Chidambaram and Mayiladuthurai. The moolavar Naanmadiyapperumaal is in a standing posture and the Thayar is Talaichanga Nachiyar. The Theertham is Chandra pushkarini and the Vimanam Chandra Vimanam. The legend is that Lord Vishnu was blessed with a conch – Talai Changu – upon worshipping Siva. A priceless conch adorns the image of the Lord in this shetram. It is also believed that Chandran, the moon God worshipped Lord Vishnu, and hence the pushkarini is called Chandra pushkarini. There is a very beautiful idol of Andal in this temple.

Vijaya, JethaIn Srimad Bagavatha Krishna Anubhava yatra arranged by Velukkudi Sri Krishnan Swamy, through Kinchith karam trust, I had an opportunity to join the same. In that Yatra in Mathura I have observed 'Radhe Krishna' nama is very often pronounced by one and all ,for all purposes. This 'Radhe Krishna' nama is actually originated from Meera. Meera Bai first called out to a parrot as

'Radhe Krishna' and this was then repeated by sadhus near her. Meera had some grains to feed the parrots and so called out them to come in bunches. But she insisted them to say Radhe Krishna first and then eat the grains. This principle has slowly attracted all her near and dear initially, and later spread throughout the area , not only with parrots alone, but also among all people there. They had a feeling as one who chants Radhe krishna readily without hesitation surely achieves the divine love. Thus it is known that Nama sankeerthanam as Govinda or Radhe Krishna is the best and foremost of all spiritual practices for attaining Him and anyone can easily practice the same.For this reason ,it may be said prior to this, Andal might have quoted this in Tiruppavai as Elley ilan Kiliye innum uranguthiyo , with an idea of parrots sleeping yet without singing as Radhe Krishna .Following this the participants of this yatra very often chanted Hare Rama Hare Krishna namas throughout the trips . Also parayanam of Sri Vishnu Sahasra namam was done as and when they get time in groups. The entire train was reverberated with Namas of Sriman narayana and it was a nice experience to all. It is good to note the nice adoption of this first from parrots, then from the people of Mathura.In previous part 78, 145 and 146 th namas were wrongly quoted as 143 and 144, and the error is regretted. In 147th nama Vijayah, it explains the excellent qualities in the whole universe by virtues of His six extreme perfect natures like omnipotent, omnipresent etc. Vedas give the exposition of nature of the Supreme person, parama purusha, the creator, the protector, the ordainer and dissolver of the entire universe. Sri Krishna has explained the secret of His incarnations to Arjuna as " Though by nature unborn exercising authority over the entire creations, I submit myself to the orders of others. I am the formless, changeless, eternal being , but I undergo several transformations , consequential to birth and growth. It is my own free will and choice that is at the root of my assuming the forms suitable to execute the purposes. I have designed everything for the good of the world. ". In Srimad Ramayanam we observe it begins with sage valmiki enumerating in detail sixteen great virtues and enquiring Narada as whether he can identify a person who possess all of them. Shoda sakalavan purusho bhavathi is his reply as Rama is that supreme person attributes recounted by valmiki . Thus it can be said as Sriman Narayana is "The victorious 'person . Vijaya is the name of Arjuna also, and in Gita 10.37, Sri Krishna saying as "Among pandavas I am Arjuna' establishes this as a victorious personality. In 148 th nama Jetha it means as 'Ever Successful”. Sriman Narayana is said to be winner of all His undertakings It can be said as He alone wins, and never knows any defeat or failure. In Upanishad it is said generally as “Truth alone Triumphs and , false alone looses" .This nama denotes as He is the conqueror ever. He is one who is naturally victorious over all beings. He is also superior to all beings . It is said as guided in the right manner by Sriman Narayana only , Brahma and Rudra carry out the task of all creations and destructions. He makes both Brahma and Rudra to act according to His wishes only. Nammmazhwr followed Maha Bharatham, Sri Vishu puranam, and other sources and said as Sriman Narayana being associted with Sri Maha Lakshmi has unsurpassed bliss. and with unlimited auspicious qualities . He has the world of sentient beings and non sentient beings as He is body. He is

everything. Nothing is beyond him. He is superior toBrahma and Siva. There is no person superior to Him or even equal to Him. Sri Vedanta Desika in Raguveera Gadyam or Maha Veera Vaibhavam sthothram begins as " JayaJaya Maha Veera Maha Veera dowreya " indicating the victory of Sri Rama . SRIMADH BHAAGAVATHAM. Once solar eclipse was there. People all over India will come come to Samataka panchakam

near Gurukshtra and assembled there.

All the Yadavas came there with Balarama and Krishna. That day Akroorar and others will do Swarnadhanam,

GodhAnam etc to Brahmins. And they will pray that their Bhakthi towards Krishna should

increase. Krishna also did lot of Dhaanas. Pandu’s sons and their relatives and kings from many places

assembled at that punya Kshtra. From Gokulam Nandan, Yasoda, all Gopas also came there. All are happy to see Bhagavan Sri Krishna there.

Bheeshmar, Yudhishtirar, Pandavas also came with their relatives to see Krishna.

Everyone exchanged their happiness with each other. Krishna met each Gopikas separately and convinced them. Then he taught them AthmAthathuvam. He told them that I am always with everyone in their Athma. No one can separate me from Jeevatmas. Then he blessed them and gave them send off. We will see next week.

‘Omithyekaahsaram brahma’ says the upanishat. The syllable Om is the vaachaka , connotation of Brahma who is the vachya , that denoted by it. Brahman pervades the Vedas and the knowledge of Brhaman is the boat that helps all beings to cross over the sea of samsar. The devas say that the Lord is Brahman and the syllable Om denotes only Him.

The Garbha Gruha or sanctum is where the main idol of Lord Sri Venkateswara resides. The idol stands majestically in the Garbha Gruha, directly beneath a gilt dome called the Ananda Nilaya Divya Vimana.This exquisitely-wrought idol called the Mulaberam, is believed to be self-manifested, as there has been no known sculptor possessing the capability to sculpt idols so proportionately and beautifully. Further, no human being is known to have installed it in the shrine.Ordinarily, the Lord wears a gold kiritam which has a large emerald embedded in front. On special occasions, he is adorned with a diamond kiritam.On his forehead, the Lord has a thick double patch of upwrought namam drawn with refined camphor, which screens his eyes. In between the two white patches is a kasturitilakam.His ears are bedecked with shining golden makara kundalas. The fist of His raised right hind hand is implanted with a gem-set chakra, and the corresponding left fist with the sankhu. The slightly outstreched front right hand, has its fingers pointing to His lotus feet, as the only recourse to His devotees

to attain oneness with Him and enjoy eternal bliss. His front left hand is akimbo to assure His devotees of protection, and to show that the samsara sagara is only hip-deep if they seek His refuge.

His body is clothed with a pitambaram tied with gold string, and a gold belt to which are attached tiny, jingling gold bells. He is adorned with precious ornaments. He has a yajnopavita flowing down cross-wise from His left shoulder. He bears Sri Lakshmi Devi on His right chest and Sri Padmavathi Devi on His left chest. He bears Nagabharanam ornaments on both shoulders.

His lotus feet are covered with gold frames and decked with clinging gold anklets. A strong curved belt of gold encompasses his legs. During Abhishekam, we can have darshan of Goddess Lakshmi.

32. Home remedies for common coldCauses and Effect of Common Cold

The common cold is something that everyone experiences in his or her lifetime. Over the years, people have been taught that going outdoors in cold or rainy weather is the cause of common colds. The fact is fresh air never hurt anyone. Colds develop from viruses, generally caused from vitamin deficiencies, such as Vitamin C. In short, the common cold is caused from viral infections. The infection often affects the nose, throat, sinus, and the larger airway. It is medically proven that viruses cause colds, yet the most implicated cause is rhinoviruses. Rhinoviruses are hard to detect because there are hundreds of subtypes. Usually the rhinoviruses target people in the spring or fall.  

Various other viruses cause colds throughout the year. The viruses are caused from making contact with a person infected. When you touch someone’s hand that has a nasal secretion, it can cause a common cold to develop. The infected person who touches other body parts, such as the nose, mouth, or eyes spreads the virus, which sets up another type of cold. Usually colds are contagious during the first and second day. There is no medical evidence that inhaling air where a contagious person has been will spread common viruses.

Everyone will catch a cold several times in his or her lifetime. Let’s face it, there is no such thing as too cautious. Each time you shake someone’s hand, you are at risk of catching a cold. You can take precautious measures to avoid colds however. Take plenty of vitamin C, and pay attention to the nasal before you shake hands. If the person is sniffling, sneezing, or draining fluids from the nasal he or she may have a virus infection. Remember that sinus, asthma, and bronchitis can also cause nasal congestion or related symptoms similar to colds. You do not want to offend anyone, yet you must protect yourself. 

Home remedies for the common cold

The common cold is nothing to take lightly, yet in most instances it is not a life or death condition. Despite it is not a dangerous condition, you still want to find home remedies for common cold. The older generation used to concoct “hot toddies,” which is a mixture of lemon, honey, hot tea, and whiskey as home remedies for common colds. The solution worked, yet as the years went on, people started thinking they were drinking mixed drinks. The hot toddies are tasty, but they are designed to treat the common cold and not to drink as a cocktail. If you mix a hot toddy, lie in the bed under heavy blankets so that you can sweat out the cold. Get plenty of rest. This is one of the best common cold cure.

Certain vitamins, herbs, and supplements can help fight or prevent the common cold. Vitamin C is one of the most popular supplements that are proven common cold home remedies. In fact, if you wash your hands often, take Vitamin C, and avoid shaking hands with a person with the virus, you can prevent the common cold from attacking you. Avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other unhealthy chemicals can also help you fight colds.   Despite that, vitamins will help you prevent or treat colds, vitamins can also hurt you. You can read the labels and talk to your doctor so that you know what your body requires.

Common cold treatment - Reading the label will help you with taking the proper dosage each day. You can learn more about vitamin deficiencies online. The most important thing to keep in mind, it to follow instructions and you will do fine.   In conclusion, you can also use some of the essential oils to prevent or treat the common cold. Bay essential oil is used to treat and help prevent neuralgia, rheumatism, flues, skin

Everyone has suffered from common cold at one time or the other. Common cold is a viral infection, which is felt more when the season changes unexpectedly. There are both summer and winter colds, and both are equally distressing. Common colds can occur in children as well as in adults. In some adults, the common cold lasts throughout the year, sometimes surging and sometimes ebbing. This is called as chronic common cold.

The usual symptoms of common cold are as follows:-

(i) Nasal congestion, and continuous watery discharge from the nose

(ii) Wateriness and redness of the eyes

(iii) Irritation of the throat

(iv) Headaches

(v) Loss of senses of taste and smell

Home Remedies for Common Cold

Use the following home remedies if the cold is mild, characterized by mild nasal congestion, throat irritation, cough and watery discharge from the nose and the eyes:-

Mix one teaspoonful each of the juice of ginger and honey. Take this mixture twice in a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. This is a very simple and very good remedy for mitigating common colds. This is one of the useful home remedies for common cold.

Chewing on a few leaves of the betel nut tree helps to treat common cold conditions.

Take some rock salt and three to four pieces of black pepper. Crush them both together. Bring them to a very fine consistency. Then put them in warm water and drink this solution when it is still warm. This is an excellent and very cheap remedy for common cold treatment.

Some people have perennial colds, i.e. colds that last throughout the year. For such people, generally there is no proper medication that works. If that is the case with you, then the following remedy will work: Take one milliliter of the extract of the tulsi leaves (Holy Basil, Ocimum sanctum). Add to this one milliliter of garlic juice and one gram of black pepper powder. Mix them all thoroughly and then put them in a glassful of water. Drink this water twice in a day; once in the morning and once in the evening. Continue this routine without a break for two months. This will definitely help you to get a permanent relief from your perennial common cold. This is one of the good common cold cure.

Warm some water in a tub and add in it four to five teaspoonfuls of salt in it. Then sit with your feet in the water. At the same time, put a cloth on the head and cover it completely. Sit in this position for about twenty minutes. Your cold will go away. If it doesn’t, continue the same treatment for the next day. This is one of the home remedy for common cold.

Put one teaspoonful of turmeric in milk that has been warmed slightly. Then add some jaggery (sugar candy) into the milk. Drinking this milk has three benefits in common cold – it relieves the phlegmatic buildup in the respiratory tract, it treats the common cold itself and it provides relief from backaches.

Take some seeds of the ajwain (Bishop's weed). Grind them properly. Then add the juice of an onion into the seeds. Rubbing this paste on the body helps in relieving the common cold. This also helps the body to revive its strength. The treatment needs to be done twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening. One of the useful home remedies for common cold.

Prepare a large amount of powder of dried ginger. Add some ghee to it. Then prepare pellets of this powder with the ghee as the binder. Each pellet should be about 30 to 40 grams in mass. Eat one of these in the morning and one in the evening. This is a good remedy to allay common colds. This is one of the effective common cold treatment.

Prepare a powdered mixture of black pepper and mix it in curds. Then add some jaggery (sugar candy) to it. Eating this twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening is a sure-shot remedy for common colds. This is a good common cold treatment.

Dates are very good for dissolving the phlegm and eliminating it from the body. Eat about five dates everyday and then drink a glassful of water on it. This is a very good remedy for decongesting the chest and getting relief from the common cold.

Another effective common cold treatment is to take four parts of unrefined sugar and one part of rock salt. Mix them thoroughly. Before going to bed each night, put one teaspoonful of this mixture in warm water or warm milk and drink it. It will most probably relieve the common cold by morning.

Another effective home remedy for common cold is to take cinnamon and nutmeg powders in equal measures. These powders should be made by rubbing the two ingredients against a clean stone. Licking on this powder in the morning and the evening brings relief to people who have common cold complaints often.

Take ten grams of the powder of ajwain (Bishop's weed). Tie this powder tightly in a cloth. Then put this on an open pan that has been heated. Sniffing on this cloth bundle daily will decongest the chest and will bring immense relief.

Take 200 grams of whole coriander seeds. Mix jaggery in it to make a paste. Then add this in water, and bring it to a boil. Inhale the vapors of this. Do this treatment four times in a day. This is good treatment for the common cold; it helps by removing the congestion from the chest region. This is one of the best home remedies for common cold.

This is another remedy with coriander. In fact, coriander is one of the best ingredients in almost all medicines for treating common cold. This remedy is used in this manner: Take about 130 to 140 grams of coriander and crush it to a fine powder. Then introduce this powder in 500 milliliters of water. When only a quarter of this water is left behind, put sugar in it and warm it again. The whole solution will become a thick decoction. Then remove it from the flame and let it cool. You must lick on this thick syrup at least four to five times in a day. It is a very good method of solving continual cold problems. Continue the treatment for a month. It will completely decongest your chest and your common cold will become a thing of the past.

Grind some green chilies to a paste and then add a little sprinkling of salt onto them. Take this with a chapatti. This must be done at least four times a day. The spicy taste of

the chili causes the eyes to water, which helps the throat to get clear. This is a very good remedy for common cold, howsoever difficult it may be to eat chili chutney.

Prepare a pasty solution of asafetida in water and keep on sniffing at it repeatedly many times in a day. This is excellent for allowing the phlegm to liquefy and flow out of the body.

This is another good home remedy for common cold with asafetida. Prepare a paste of asafetida in water and apply this paste to the nose, throat and chest. This provides excellent remedy to chest congestion and helps in the treatment of common cold.

Take some dried leaves of the peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) and roll it with some ajwain seeds (Bishop's Weed) in it to make a cigarette. Then ignite one end of this herbal cigarette and smoke. The smoke inhaled from this is very good in solving the common cold problem.

In a small piece of sugar candy, put some asafetida and a few pieces of black pepper. Then roll this into a small ball. Have one of these in the morning and one in the evening.

Good natural remedy for common cold is to take two or three pieces of cloves and some black pepper and make a paste of them in mustard oil. Blend them properly and then roll the mixture in a cloth. Warm this on an open pan. When it is warm, apply the hot bundle on the external portion of the nose. Do this several times in a day. There will be a complete treatment to the common cold.

When sleeping at night, put a few drops of slightly warmed oil in both the ears and then cover them with a wad of cotton. This will prevent the cold from getting worse and will indeed help in quick recovery.

The following remedies are to be employed in case the cold has become chronic, with complete nasal congestion and complete loss of the senses of smell and taste.

Put about five pieces of black pepper in yogurt. Have this for about three to four days, once daily. This will be a very good remedy for clearing the phlegmatic buildup in the sinuses. This is a good common cold remedy.

Sniffing at asafetida, black pepper or horseradish directly also proves to be beneficial in treating chronic common cold conditions.

One of the useful home remedies for common cold is to take some tulsi seeds and some amount of ginger in equal quantities. Mix them thoroughly and make a fine powdery mixture of the two. Consume five grams of this mixture twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. This will definitely help in treating common colds, howsoever severe they may be.

Take a cupful of milk. Add in it two grams of ginger powder. Then drink it. This is a very simple remedy, but it has great benefits in treating common colds.

In a glass of warm milk, add two milligrams of asafetida that has been roasted before. Drink this milk quite slowly twice in a day. This is an excellent remedy for treating common colds.

Get hold of some leaves of the peepal tree. Dry them in the shade. Then put them in water and bring it to a boil. Add sugar in this boiling water. This is to be sipped like tea twice in a day. If you find the taste intolerable, then chocolate can be added to the water. This is one of the natural remedy for common cold.

Make a small incision in the node of a piece of ginger. Put a very small pinch of asafetida in this cavity. Then tie this with a thread and smear it with a thick paste of wet mud. Bake this over live coals. When the piece of ginger become red in color, remove it from the flame, let it cool and then scrape out the mud. Now grind the piece of ginger and make small pellets – of the size of chickpeas – from the ginger paste. Put one of these in the mouth once every three hours. This is considered to be a permanent remedy for all kinds of cold. This is a good common cold remedy.

Put a piece of ginger in water and bring it to a boil. Drink a cupful of this once a day. If your cold is chronic, then continuing this remedy for forty consecutive days will bring a full stop to all your nasal and thoracic problems.

Avoiding Common Colds

Common cold is a viral infection, but its symptoms can be aggravated by certain conditions. Be careful of the following aggravating factors:-

(i) Do not expose yourself to outside cold climates.

(ii) Do not get unnecessarily wet in the rain. If you do get wet accidentally, wipe yourself completely dry as soon as possible.

(iii) Avoid all fruits that can aggravate the cold, such as oranges, sweet lemons, green bananas, papayas, watermelons, etc. These must be definitely avoided in the cold season.

(iv) Do not have any cold substances, like ice-creams, etc, in the nighttime shortly before going to bed.

(v) Avoid being near any person who is suffering from common cold.

The Wisdom of Krishna – Through Select Mahaavaakhyas in the Gita Sermon

18.12. Jnaana (knowledge) and Karma (work) can go together: In 18.66 what Krishna is emphasizing is that dharma, whatsoever be its merits, is no dharma if it does not lead to complete (sarvabhaavena) self – surrender unto God. Interpreting dharma as ‘religious rites’ in general, Adi S’ankara says, “Abstinence from all activities is taught here. He holds that the highest spiritual experience ( jnaana) and work (karma) cannot go together in the same person”. This interpretation seems to be untenable from the following considerations. Firstly Krishna has no particular love for ritualistic worship (Vide (2.41 - 44). Secondly it is important to note Krishna’s oft repeated emphasis on karma yoga – imperative of karma (duty), for social good and harmony even after attaining the highest spiritual status. Moreover it is worth pointing out that it is not jnaana (knowledge) that leads to supreme liberation, but it is the jnaani, who has assimilated jnaana (as explained below) into himself that attain supreme liberation. Who is that jnaani? Krishna has designated the one who has realized that vaasudevah sarvam iti (all that is, is Vaasudeva) as a jnaani. In fact the twenty virtues (values) enumerated in (13.7 –11), defined as jnaana, is indeed an exhortation to act according to dharma (righteously). As ‘karma yogi’ stated in the columns of the “New Indian Express”: “Work is the movement of consciousness. Any movement that is progress is work. If this is true, how can any one not have work, unless he desires no further progress”? Again Krishna considered the one who has surrendered completely (sarvabhaavena) as the jnaani and it is this jnaani that

attains supreme peace and eternal abode – (18.61, 62): In addition what about the exhortation, “surrender to Me alone? Does this exhortation to ‘surrender’ not involve action? In His exhortation (18.66) Krishna is urging to change the direction of one’s consciousness. In supreme surrender one’s ego is completely erased and the soul is not involved in the egoless work, as all the work is done by prakriti (ten sense organs, mind and intellect – the non-self) under the direction of its master, the Deity. This is the supreme realization of Brahman in its entirety (manifest and unmanifest), which is indeed true wisdom. In the realization of this wisdom the individual soul does not work, nor has it any work to do and yet all that needs to be done is got done by the Deity through the instrumentality of prakriti. In this understanding there is no conflict between jnaana (highest spiritual experience), parama bhakti (supreme devotion) and karma (work). Again there is the Arjuna’s response to the Gita Sermon, which has been acknowledged by all as the result of wisdom of Krishna taught to Arjuna. What was this culmination of wisdom taught? Arjuna exclaimed: “I shall do Thy bidding”, which is action, which he failed to take up before being initiated into the wisdom of Krishna. 18.13. In this context, the interpretation of S’ri Ramanuja on 18.66 is significant and worth emphasising. Parityajya does not mean abandoning all dharmas – Karma, Jnaana and Bhakti Yogas, but giving up of the idea that the action is one’s own, that one is the agent of action and enjoyer of its results. ‘maam ekam’ signifies that Is’wara alone is all these. S’aran’am signifies that the Lord alone is the upeya, the final goal and He alone is upaaya, the means, as by His grace alone the final goal can be attained. The expression used by Arjuna, as a result of assimilation of the wisdom of Krishna – “sthitah asmi gatasamdehah, karishye vacanam tava”, confirms the above observations. The Gita Sermon is verily a detailed exposition of duty (svadharma), devotion and knowledge, each being intertwined and inter – penetrating the other two. Each is not independent of the other two as each contains the essential elements of the other two.18.14. The six concluding verses of the Sermon bring out two significant aspects of the Sermon. The one is Deity’s supreme love for the devotee and hence is His exhortation not to grieve – not to be anxious. The second one is the gospel of devotion and surrender. It may be stated that these aspects run through the entire Sermon. We now proceed to present briefly this aspect. 18.15. The Essential Message of the Gita Sermon is indeed a Message of Joy and Cheer. It may be stated that Krishna wanted to impress, at the very outset, upon the sorrowing and despondent Arjuna, because of his undue attachment to his kith and kin and through him the entire humanity, the message of joy and cheer. All problems of mankind are of its own making. Life is as we want it to be – joy or sorrow. The choice is ours. Unfortunately we choose wrongly influenced by our egoism – ignorance of our true divine nature. Both the Verses - the starting verse (2.11) and the concluding verse - carama s’loka (18.66) of the Sermon, emphasize the message of joy and cheer. It is indeed significant that the closing two words of the Sermon are – “maa s’ucah – grieve not”. Krishna exhorted Arjuna not to grieve on three occasions in the Sermon. In the First occasion Krishna’s advice is negative in the sense that He tells Arjuna that he is grieving for those who should not be grieved for - as’ocyaananvas’ocastvam, as the perishable body and the immortal indwelling soul divine are of different and distinct nature. This observation was made in the context of His exhortation to Arjuna to understand and realise the first step in spiritual saadhana – “Aatmaanam viddi – know thy self” – that you are

not the body but immortal spirit soul and the importance that Arjuna is giving to human relationship and which in turn caused his despondency are false and should be given up as these relationship are of the bodies and not of the spirit soul and so as impermanent as the bodies. All the souls are immortal spirits divine – eternal parts of the Deity – Vide verse (15.7). The second occasion was when He tells Arjuna not to grieve as he is born of divine nature – “maa s’ucah sampadam daiveem abhijaatah asi paandava – grieve not, oh Arjuna, you are born for a divine state”. – (16. 5): This is so because Arjuna had already become a supreme devote of the Lord, as is evident from his address to Krishna in chapter ten – vide verses (10.12 – 18). This observation is a kind of encouragement to Arjuna and an exhortation for positive thinking. Implicitly this observation brings out that only through the cultivation of Divine values defined in (16.1 – 3) that one can gain the state of grief-lessness. On the third occasion, which is His last word on the Sermon, Krishna exhorts Arjuna to give up all material supports and supremely surrender to him alone - sarvadharmaan parityjya, maam ekam s’aran’am vraja and graciously exhorts him not to grieve – maa sucah. Compassionate Krishna’s graciously assures Arjuna that he will not only be freed from all sins – aham tvaa sarva paapebhyah mokshayishyaami, but also promises him that will certainly attain Him as he is dear to Him – maam eva eshyasi satyam te pratijaane priyah asi me. In other words Krishna desires all of us to be ever cheerful and joyous with no senses of anxiety whatsoever. It is therefore not surprising that Krishna should define karma yoga by the exhortation: "tam vidyaat duhkhasamyogsviyogam yogasamjnitam – know that the disconnection of attachment to sorrow is considered as the blessed state of yoga”. – (6.23): Bliss is real nature of man. It is because of ignorance that he gets attached to misery and suffers. When this assumed state of affair is alienated, he beams in his original bliss again. The meaning of yoga is to yoke one with one’s supreme nature (bliss). Sound mental climate is a prelude to the yogi’s getting back to beatitude, his original state. It is to be noted that instead of simply saying detachment from sorrow, Krishna uses the expression - “disconnection of attachment to sorrow”, as yet another definition of karma yoga. Why? This is because; we are ever in attachment with sorrow as we identify the soul with body-mind-intellect-complex – the non-self. It is this identification that Krishna is urging to be disconnected and that practice of supreme detachment to the body-mind-intellect-complex is the only way to gain supreme bliss. In other words, Krishna’s above quoted observation explains the “maaya of happiness” in our craving for happiness - “I want happiness”, which ever eludes us. Here “I” stands for ego – the blissful immortal spirit soul identifying itself with mortal body – senses - mind – intellect – complex and “want” standing for the consequent feeling by the individual soul of inadequacy or a lack of fullness, leading to despondency and sorrow. If we get rid of both the “I” and “want”, what remains is pure happiness or bliss – the true nature of the one’s innermost self - immortal individual spirit soul - characterized by sat – chit – aananda (existence, knowledge, bliss).

Not for petty reasons What is the purpose of surrender to the Lord? Is it to seek riches? Is it to seek fulfilment of worldly desires? The answer would be in the negative to these questions. The purpose of devotion should be to attain moksha in order to be able to serve the Lord, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari in a lecture.

A pearl-seller went to a village to sell his wares. The women of the village, curious about the pearls, examined them and enquired about the price. The pearl-seller said he would sell a handful of them for a handful of grains. This would be just the sort of opportunity a woman would be waiting for. But the women said they were not interested in the offer! But why did they pass up such a great bargain?

Their reasoning was that pearls were valuable, and they would not cheapen their value by buying them up so cheap. When what is on offer is a valuable commodity, it doesn't do to trivialise it. In the same, what is it that the Lord offers us? He offers us moksha. When something so invaluable is on offer, would we not be trivialising it by approaching the Lord for petty things? When He is able to grant us moksha itself, should we approach Him for worldly possessions that are here today and gone tomorrow?

The true devotee is not interested in seeking favours from the Lord. The Gopikas, for instance, were so absorbed in their love for the Lord that they could not bear His absence even for a minute. When He left them, they began to feel that life itself was futile. They sang of Him and said Gokula had become wealthy because of Him.

His presence is the greatest wealth, and His absence the greatest poverty. Such is the attitude of the true devotee. The true devotee knows that even when he suffers in life, he should not be angry with the Lord.

The Lord is only doing what He should -- punishing us when we deserve punishment. Punishing and protecting -- both are His duties. Realising His greatness, we should keep from asking Him for worldly pleasures. No one but the Lord can guarantee moksha. That being the case, we should not seek anything else from Him.
