INTRODUCTION

Microsoft's video game console, the Xbox 360, has sold over 80 million units worldwide since its introduction in 2005.

Microsoft rebuilt the Xbox from the ground up. From the name to the look to hardware and features.

Xbox 360 is a total media center that allows users to play, network, rip, stream and download all types of media, including high-definition movies, music, digital pictures and game content.

The heart of 360- The CPU

Microsoft has outfitted the 360 with a 165-million transistor, multi-core processor running three 3.2-GHz PowerPC cores.

Multi-core processors offer a combination of tremendous computing capabilities and efficient power consumption.

Each core is capable of processing two threads simultaneously.  With a multi-core processor, the system is powerful enough to

pull off the computational demands needed for an amazing gaming experience without even breaking a sweat.

GPU: Graphics Processor Unit

Custom-built 500-MHz ATI Graphics Processor card with 10 MB of embedded DRAM.

It is built on unified shader architecture. Shaders are computer programs that determine the final look of

what you see on the screen when you're looking at computer animation.

Pixel Shaders Vertex Shaders Both shader types share the same pipelines. 48 billion shader operations per second.

Xbox 360 Controller

Wireless controllers Support up to four wireless controllers at one time. Microsoft created a proprietary technology to deal with

some of the latency and bandwidth issues that can be a problem for some wireless controllers.

Some wireless headsets will also work with Xbox.

Xbox LIVE

Xbox LIVE is an online subscription service that allows Xbox gamers to play video games together and download additional game content using the internet.

Xbox LIVE has created a huge online community of gamers

challenging one another worldwide.

Xbox LIVE on the 360 is divided into two services: Xbox LIVE Silver and Xbox LIVE Gold.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is the creation of a highly interactive computer based multimedia environment in which the user becomes a participant with the computer in what is known as a “synthetic environment.”

Three-dimensional images that appear to be life-sized from the perspective of the user

The ability to track a user's motions, particularly his head and eye movements, and correspondingly adjust the images on the user's display to reflect the change in perspective

KINECT

Page 11: Xbox360

KINECT

Kinect has revolutionized gaming, in that you are able to use your entire body as the controller.

3 major functions

• movement tracking

• speech recognition

• motorized tilt of the sensor itself

Page 12: Xbox360

KINECT: 3D Sensing technology

A company based In Israel known as PrimeSense developed the 3D sensing technology.

3 main parts that make it work

• Infrared laser projector

• Infrared camera

• RGB colored camera

Page 13: Xbox360

IR sensing

IR depth sensor is a monochrome complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) camera.

IR camera used in the Kinect is VGA resolution (640x480) cam refreshing at a rate of 30Hz.

Each camera pixel has a photodiode connected to it, which receives the IR light beams being bounced off objects in the room.

The voltage produced by the photodiode is directly

proportional to the distance the object.

Page 14: Xbox360

Role of software

Using statistics, probability, and hours of testing different natural human movements the programmers developed software to track the movements of 20 main joints on a human body.

This is how Kinect can differentiate a player.

Kinect has the capabilities of tracking up to six different players at a time.

Page 15: Xbox360

Color camera

The depth sensing and the color camera work together to develop an accurate digital image of how your face looks.

8- bit color camera, also VGA resolution, detects and stores the skin tone of the person.

Storing these images of your face and skin tone color is how the Kinect can recognize you when you step in front of the projected IR beams.

Another added feature of the color camera is it takes videos or snapshots .

Xbox one improvements

Xbox One is larger than the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has a PowerPC-based CPU - it's a triple-core 3.2GHz

processor. The Xbox One has an eight-core processor based on the AMD Jaguar chip series.

The Xbox 360 has 512MB of RAM, the Xbox One has 8GB of RAM.  Xbox One version looks far more detailed than Xbox 360. Xbox 360 obviously has a much, much stronger games library than the

newborn Xbox One.  The Xbox One predictably, costs a lot more.
