How long have you been Principal of thecollege?

    Since October 2008

What does a college day involve as thePrincipal?

Each day is very busy and usually includesinternal meetings with managers, staff andstudents; lots of paperwork, emails, writingreports and I often have to speak at publicevents.

What has been the best highlight of beingprincipal?

Developing the Learner First Commitmentand seeing that education can and doesmake a difference in the lives of our learners.Irrespective of background, language, culture

or ultimate goal, learning changes lives for thebetter. There is no greater reward.

What are your views on the rise of theuniversity fees for students.

It is a shame that fewer of our learners will havethe opportunity to follow the traditional routeto a degree; but there are exciting alternativesavailable. The College offers degrees and even

MBAs already and we are looking to expandon this provision. The advantage is that ourcourses will be much cheaper than those atthe universities and you get to stay in anenvironment that you are already familiar with, one that is truly Learner First.

We all know what its like trying to deal with problems alone, so we are here tohelp. Readers have sent in their problems for our help.

Problem Student A spent loads on her baby boy and shes on a budget, shedoesnt have money issues but it is imperative to spend on her child. All themoney goes to her child and not herself.

Solution The solution would be to start putting money aside for herself thatis enough for both her and her child, instead of just her child. Everyone deservesto treat themselves every now and again.

Problem Student B feels that since a friend got a boyfriend she doesnt needmuch time with her anymore and feels more like an acquaintance, rather thena good friend.

SolutionThere are various solutions to this issue. The main solution though is

to call or write to her about how you feel, this shows honesty and a true friend.Get to know the boyfriend as well, you never know he might actually be ok.

Problem Student C doesnt have a job, his money is really low which is a bigissue for him. He has to be nancially stable. He has been looking and applyingfor various jobs but no luck whatsoever. He needs money to survive.

Solution He has to keep trying to look for different jobs and not relinquish.

Maybe he needs to change his job application and his CV. He could ask thecareers department for help and advice. Keep trying, dont surrender, there areplenty of jobs out there it just takes time to get the right one!

As teenagers we face a lot of problems, one

problem that we might face is spots. Spots area nightmare, they appear on your face in themost awkward, most random places, where youreally dont want them to be. We try everythingto get rid of them and sometimes we can makethem worse by doing this. A lot of us spend alot of money on facial washes and spot creamsto try and get rid of them but do they reallywork?

Some products may work for your friend butnot you, so you end up spending a lot of moneytrying to nd the perfect one for you. It putsa strain on our lives as well as when we doget one especially if they are big it makes usfeel a bit down in the dumps about ourselves. Then you dont feel good about your self eventhough you try to feel good about your selfso it lowers your self esteem. Also with spots

and especially as a teenager you feel like whensome one is talking to you, you feel like theycould be looking at your spots which couldmake you feel quite insecure about yourself. Nomatter what we do there isnt a cream, wash orwash to get rid of them permanently no matterhow hard we try.

I have found that Superdrugs own brandedTea Tree oil works best with my spots and

blemishes, it is quite cheap too and as studentswe all know that we dont have much money tospend so this is a good solution. The price ofthe Tea Tree Oil is 2.99, or you can mix andmatch throughout the Tea Tree oil range andget 2 for 3.99.

Another method I use is putting Sudocremover your spots and this helps them to go down.I usually put this over my spots at night andin the morning they are not as inamed. Thebad thing about this method is it can dry outyour skin. It is around 3.85 to buy Sudocrem.Depending on how much you use at a time this

    will last a long time.

I hope you nd these methods useful andremember that not all of the expensivetreatments could work on you, try the cheapones rst before trying the expensive ones as Ind that the cheaper ones work better for me.

Its been twelve years since The Muppets released a lm in thecinemas, so the question is will they be appealing and popular to a

new generation of kids? Based on the nancial and critical successof the lm so far, the answer is yes! The latest muppet lm bringsback the same style of entertainment that made them popularover 30 years ago. There is singing, dancing, comedy, specialeffects and celebrity cameos. In the end, it comes down to thefact the characters are so lovable and songs are so catchy that itdoesnt matter how old you are, there is something for the wholefamily to enjoy

With Valentines Day behind us and a few romantic comedies incinemas at the moment, A Dangerous Method comes across asthe perfect anti-romantic lm. Set in the early 20th century, thelm explores the relationship of psychiatrist Carl Jung (Played byMichael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud, founder of psychoanalysis(Played by Viggo Mortensen). The lm may not be the ideal lmthe watch with a date, but it is intriguing and well written with aexcellent cast.

Based on the chilling 1983 novel by Susan Hill, The Woman InBlack tells the story of widowed solicitor Arthur Kipps who is giventhe responsibility of trying to sell an old house that belonged to awoman who has recently died. However, when he visits the house,he witnesses supernatural events and discovers the mythicalwoman in black. While the lm may be frightening to a youngeraudience, I cant help but feel that the more horror lms youveseen, the less effective the lm becomes. I admire the way thelm attempts to build up suspense rather than trying to constantly

shock the audience, but I found that the pay-offs were somewhatunsatisfying.

A tale of best friends, regret, missed opportunities andultimately love

One Day is an adaptation of the book written by DavidNicholls, the lm adaptation was also written by DavidNicholls.

Anne Hathaway (as Emma Morley) and Jim Sturgess(as Dexter Mayhew) are our main characters. Theyare both students at a university. Emma and Dexterwere friends up till the graduation day, on that nightthey spent the night together and here is where theromantic story begins

As their lives go separate ways, Emma and Dexstrive to live their dreams experiencing hardship, success and compromise along the way. Thebonds of their friendship are frequently testedyet their stories remain intertwined. Will theyrealise the power of their unique connection intime to share a life together?

The lm is supposed to show us 20 years oftheir relationship, however it seems like themain action is just being rushed through,

obviously it is not easy to t such a long story into108 minutes, but the audience may get a feeling of being hurried, which makes it really hard to keep up with the story line.

Anne Hathaway plays the role of Emma really well, those who recogniseher from Devil Wears Prada or Becoming Jane can admit she is avery great actress, however in One Day she is supposed to be playinga girl from Leeds, so we would expect a Leedian accent but what we getis far from it, as her accent does not sound authentic at times and it getsirritating at times!

The book has gained more popularitythan the lm, which doesnt necessarymake the lm bad, however it is notone of the best lms, it may be foundinteresting by some and some may justsimply dont like it. My advice is to pickup a copy of the book before endulgingin the lm.

The lm has been available on DVDsince the 6th February

Road I went to see the national diploma 1st year actors perform oneof their major plays .Road is a play about people who live on a roadin Northern England. It is a place where things slide and dont dropoff .Skilley introduces the play.

I thought all the actors did very well in portraying the story line asit came across easy to understand .It had a lot of comedy which wasa plus ,the costumes and the whole production was well presented. The only downfall was that it went on for awhile and dragged on for most parts. Overall Iwould give the show an 3 out of 5 ratings. The rst year actors and 2nd year actors havemore plays coming up and are well worthwatching.Come along and support.

Being a College student isnt cheap. You needmore money for food, more money for books andequipment, and you might even need money just toget in to college. So heres ten ways you can makeyour money go that little bit further.

    1. Get up earlier. Getting up earlier means you have moretime to get ready for College and the day ahead. If you

wake up late, you could nd yourself in arush and have to buy breakfast on the goand maybe even take the tube, meaningyou have to pay more.

    2. Big brand doesnt mean great value for money. Sure, your clothes from Topshop, Topman, Gap, and AmericanApparel look great. But that doesnt mean you need topay more to get them. You can often nd clothes thatlook just the same a whole lot cheaper. Shops like H&Moften have great designs but half the cost!

    3. Think before you spend. We all like buying stuff wewant. Its fun, its easy, and its not something we ndourselves regretting all that often. But, do we really

need these things? You could buy that computer game,or even the iPhone youve wanted since forever. Thoughyou could also buy that A Level revision book. Whichones cheaper, and which one is more important?

    4. Borrow, dont buy. So Drakes new album is out and youreally want it. Off to the shops it is then. But wait! Doesnt

your friend love Drake just as much as you? Why dontyou borrow it? Just slap the CD into your laptop, importit into your iTunes and youve got a copy forever!

    5. Know where the bargains are. Bargains are a students best friend.Whether its a buy one get one free at Tesco or going to the cinemaat 2:00 on Wednesday afternoon, they cant be beaten. Find thebargains, and youll soon nd a lot more money in your pocket.

    6. Use the College gym. Places like Virgin Active havegreat facilities but cost so much more than the one atCollege. You can use it for free for up to 90 minutes aday and if you want to stay longer, fees are minimal.

    7. Know your bank balance. If you know exactly how much money youhave, its easier to keep track of it and not overspend. If you spendmore money than youve got, your bank will charge you and youllhave even less money.

    8. Second hand: the only difference is the price. Get books, CDs andDVDs at car boot sales, computer games from the pre-owned sectionin the shops. That copy of FIFA 12 will play just as well, The SocialNetwork isnt going to stop playing half an hour in. The only differenceis that youre spending less.

    9. Do it yourself. Dont fancy getting your nails done for at an

extortionate price? Learn how you can do it at home. Cut yourhair often? Buy a hair clipper and you can cut it whenever youlike. Or even visit the Bueaty Salon on Hammersmith Campus.

10.Use your student discount! Just ashingyour College ID card at the counter can getyou a variety of discounts, including free

cheeseburgers at McDonalds and up to 20% offat certain high street stores.

This month our student prole is based on an innovative and creative

student, Thomas Brunskill, who has designed and launched his own onlineclothing brand, Fredericks Apparel. I caught up with him to nd out more.

What inspired you to start up your online clothing brand?Since I was a kid I had creative ideas for products, I have always taken aninterest in male clothing, my ideas were based on what I like & what I thinkother people would like to wear. I came up with Fredericks Apparel. Forsomeone who wants to go into business as a future career I took this as alearning experience.Do you design all the clothes featured in Fredericks Apparel?

Yes, I wanted to make the brand entirely my own by doing everything myself.Has your course taught you any skills that have helped you set up yourclothing brand?Well I started developing the idea before undertaking my current course, butduring the course I have used certain software that has helped me with theclothing brand, such as Final Cut for promotional video making. Why did you choose Fredericks Apparel as the name for your brand?I wanted the brand to represent me in some way but not in a major way.I decided to use my middle name but at the same time signifying it as aclothing brand without using the most common word, so I came up with the

name Fredericks Apparel.Your clothing brand is targeted towards male consumers, why did you opt foronly creating male clothing?Ive analysed male clothing for a long time and I didnt want to targetconsumers that I havent researched into, also male clothing is usually mucheasier to produce. I dont believe I would be able to cater well to femaleconsumers for now.How does the clothing brand link to your plans in the future?I wanted to create the brand as experience of running a business and to showmy ability of managing a brand to universities and potential employers. Fromcreating the logo to creating the website, its a prototype of what I wouldlike to achieve for real in the future. From the start of doing this, I decided,as with my other potential businesses, I want to make sure I take importantconsideration to care for humans, animals and the environment throughthe process of the business. For example, I decided all Fredericks Apparelproducts are vegan, meaning no animal products are used at all.Whats next for Fredericks Apparel and yourself?Currently Im in my second year of College, so Im on a break from thebrand to focus on my grades for university, however I am slowly working

on completely changing the concept and image of the brand, and maybelaunching it properly some time, perhaps Summer!

    POEM

    Into the wild blue yonder

    By Josh Ginsburg

Into the wild blue yonder we run to have this nal funthis nal ight to unite the plight we've felt within for itis the last call for sin as we will now begin this transitionfrom the dead into to the living.

For no one lives in this age, its as if a plague has swept

the streets turning man into monster.

Who's hungry for a ght or one night of pleasure forthis pestilence that has brought this famine of wisdomand logic which has only brought war to a lil' red doormarked with the number if 4 where your false plees andhallowed victories now fall on deaths ears and hollowpoint smiles that nest into tea cups, and nd themselves

sneeking up as if a hug from a once know becomes un-known and you are the rst to cast a stone upon the highof life, so put down that life, that razor that's clenchedtight in your right hand.

So once again we will sing into the wild blue yonder sowe can sit and ponder in this lonely sky blue room is manmeant to scratch the surfaces of stars or merely gaze in

awe at the heavens that lay above them as the night skyblankets the world in the bandage it needs to heal.

How do I get big muscles? It is very simple (Resistance Training) What you reallywant is to make yourself stronger by making your bodymore able to handle heavier and heavier weight forat least four reps. Power lifters as you have probablyseen in the Olympics are not the biggest guys andthat is because their goal is to lift the most weight forexactly one rep max. To fool your muscles into thinkingthat they have to be able to lift more weight they will

need to do a few reps at the higher weight. Your bodywill then get used to this higher weight by increasingthe strength of the individual muscle cells. This willincrease your muscle mass.

Whats the best way to loose weight?Small changes can make a big difference. For exampleone extra biscuit a week can lead you to weight gain of5lb a year, cut this out of your diet and youll lose thesame amount. You would also benet from making small changessuch as swapping full fat milk for semi-skimmed oreating breakfast if you dont already. You should think of weight loss in terms of permanentlychanging your eating habits and sustaining thesehabits.

How do I get a six pack? The most important factor in developing an eye-

catching six pack is having a low body fat percentage, key things to think about is what you put in your bodyand are you doing the correct training to achieve yourgoal? So sort out the diet, your half way there!

    Example excercise: The stomach crunch

Need a break? Fed up of all

the stress? We are offering FREE sports massages
