Functionaldescription

TheXenonisalowcostmesh-enableddevelopmentboardthatcanactaseitheranendpointor

repeaterwithinaParticleMeshnetwork.

TheXenonismeshonlyanddesignedtofunctionastheendpointofyourIoTnetwork.Itisbased

ontheNordicnRF52840andhasbuilt-inbatterychargingcircuitrysoit’seasytoconnectaLi-Po

anddeployyourlocalnetworkinminutes.

TheXenonisbestforconnectingsensors,motors,pumps,valves,andpointsofdata-interest.Pairit

withanArgonorBorongatewaytogetallthatgreatdataintotheDeviceCloud.

LiPo/LithiumIon(3.7V).TheXenonhasanonboardLiPochargerthatwillchargeandpowerthe

devicewhenUSBsourceispluggedin,orpowerthedevicefromtheLiPoaloneintheabsenceof

theUSB.

Thispinistheoutputoftheonboard3.3Vstep-downswitchingregulator(TorexXC9258A).The

regulatorisratedat1000mAmax.Whenusingthispintopowerotherdevicesorperipherals

remembertobudgetinthecurrentrequirementoftheXenonfirst.Thispincanalsobeusedto

powertheXenoninabsenceoftheUSBorLiPopower.Whenpoweringoverthispin,please

connecttheENABLEpintoGNDsothattheonboardregulatorisdisabled.

TheXenoncontainshighlysensitiveelectroniccircuitryandisanElectrostaticSensitiveDevice

(ESD).HandlingXenonwithoutproperESDprotectionmaydestroyordamageitpermanently.

ProperESDhandlingandpackagingproceduresmustbeappliedthroughouttheprocessing,

handlingandoperationofanyapplicationthatincorporatesXenon.ESDprecautionsshouldbe

implementedontheapplicationboardwheretheXenonismounted.Failuretoobservethese

precautionscanresultinseveredamagetotheXenon!

TherearefourconnectorsontheXenonthatwillgetdamagedwithimproperusage.TheJST

connectoronthecircuitboard,whereyouplugintheLiPobattery,isverydurablebutthe

connectoronthebatteryitselfisnot.Whenunpluggingthebattery,takeextraprecautiontoNOT

pulltheconnectorusingthewires,butinsteadholdtheplugatitsbasetoavoidputtingstresson

thewires.Thiscanbetrickywithbarehands-nosepliersareyourfriendhere.

ThemicroBUSBconnectorontheXenonissolderedonthePCBwithlargesurfacepadsaswellas

coupleofthroughholeanchorpoints.Despitethisreinforcement,itisveryeasytoripoutthe

connectoriftoomuchstressisputonintheverticaldirection.

TheU.FLantennaconnectorisnotdesignedtobeconstantlypluggedandunplugged.The

antennapinisstaticsensitiveandyoucandestroytheradiowithimproperhandling.Atinydabof

The10pinSWDconnectorprovidesaneasyin-systemdebuggingaccesstothedevice.Thepinson

theconnectorcaneasilybedamagedifthematingconnectorcableisinsertedimproperly.Ifyou

aretryingtodebugthedevice,youprobablyarenotinagoodmoodtobeginwith.Thelastthing

youwantistorendertheconnectoruseless.Benice,andbegentleontheconnector.Goodluck

withthedebugging!

ThebreadboardprovidedwiththeXenonisspecificallydesignedtorequirelowinsertionforce.This

makesiteasytoplugtheXenoninandoutofthebreadboard.Ifyouendupusingadifferent

breadboard,rememberthatitmayrequiremoreforce.Inthiscase,alwaysremembertopinch-

holdyourpreciousXenonbythesides(alongtheheaderpins)whenplugging-unpluggingandnot

bytheUSBconnector(don'tbethisperson).

Defaultsettings

TheXenoncomespreprogrammedwithabootloaderandauserapplicationcalledTinker.This

applicationworkswithaniOSandAndroidappalsonamedTinkerthatallowsyoutoveryeasily

toggledigitalpins,takeanaloganddigitalreadingsanddrivevariablePWMoutputs.

Thebootloaderallowsyoutoeasilyupdatetheuserapplicationviaseveraldifferentmethods,USB,

OTA,SerialY-Modem,andalsointernallyviatheFactoryResetprocedure.Allofthesemethods

havemultipletoolsassociatedwiththemaswell.

FederalCommunicationCommissionInterferenceStatementThisequipmenthasbeentested

andfoundtocomplywiththelimitsforaClassBdigitaldevice,pursuanttoPart15oftheFCC

Rules.Theselimitsaredesignedtoprovidereasonableprotectionagainstharmfulinterferenceina
