PREFACE
THESTRONGINTERNATIONALXENONGLADIATORIIModel47050isadirectcurrentfollowspotlightcompletewithaxenonlamphouse,powersupply,opticalsystem,colorboomerang,andbasestandassembly.Thespotlightassemblyconsistsofthearclamp,variablefocuslenssystem,colorboomerang,andbase.Theseparatexenonpowersupplycompletestheinstallation.
ONLYTHESPECIALXENONPOWERSUPPLIESmanufacturedbyStrongInternationalcanbeusedwiththeGladiatorII.Forinstallationandoperationofthepowersupply,seetheinstructionmanualfurnishedseparately.
THEXENONLAMPHOUSEutilizesa2500wattxenonbulbdesignedforhorizontalopera-tion, and a deep ellipse metal reflector as a light source. The reflector is designed to operate in a fixed position, and is dichroic (“cold”) coated to reduce heat in the projected light. A lens blower and heat filters, mounted inthespotlightopticalsystem,furtherreduceheatattheprojectionlensandcolormedia.
ONLYXENONBULBSdesignedforhorizontaloperationshouldbeusedinthisfollowspot.ThosebulbscurrentlyapproveduseinthefortheGladiatorIIlamphouseincludetheLTIX-2500W-HS(fromLightingTechnologiesInternational)andtheOsram®XBO2500W/HSOFR.Allrequiredbulbcablingisprovidedinthexenonlamphouse,andbulbadaptersarenotrequired.
ADJUSTMENTCONTROLforthexenonbulbislocatedattherearofthelamphousebehindtheaccesspanel.Theadjustmentscontrolthehorizontal,verticalandfocalmovementofthebulb.
INSTRUMENTATIONofthelamphouseincludesarunningtimemeterandaDCammeter.Therunningtimemeterindicatesthenumberofhoursthebulbhasbeeninoperation.Theammeterdisplaystheoperatingcurrentofthelamp.Apushbuttonswitch,locatedbelowtheammeter,changesthemeterread-ingtoindicatetheDCvoltageatthearc.
THELAMPHOUSECOOLINGBLOWERSareinternallywiredandoperateonACvoltagederivedfromthexenonpowersupply.Theseblowersarerequiredtomaintainasafeoperatingtemperatureat the bulb seals. The blowers operate continuously until the xenon power supply is de-energized. Air flow interlockswitchespreventoperationofthelampiftheintakeorexhaustblowersarenotoperatingorfailingtomoveadequateair.
THEIGNITERisequippedwithanemergencyignitionswitch,locatedonthetopofthelam-phousebelowtheplugbutton.Pressingthisswitchbypassestherelaycontactsontheigniterprintedcircuitboard.DONOTholdthisswitchforlongerthanone secondtopreventtransformerdamage.
THETWOROCKERSWITCHESontheinstrumentpanelarelabeledMODEandLAMP.TheMODEswitchpermitsoperationofthelamphousefromaremotelocationwhenplacedinthe“AUTO”position,orbytheoperatoratthelamphousewhenin“MAN.”Thenormalsettingforthisswitch,inafollowspotapplication,isinthe“MAN.”position.
THELAMPSWITCHisprovidedformanualbulbignitionwhentheMODEswitchisinthe“MAN.”position.TheLAMPswitchmustalsobe“ON”tocompletetheignitioncircuitwhenoperatingfromaremotelocation.

THELAMPHOUSEissuppliedwitha13footcablecontainingtheDCleads,theACcontrolwires,andthegroundwire.ThecableterminatesinamultiplepinMSconnectorkeyedtomatewiththereceptacleonthepowersupply.
WHENTRANSPORTINGTHESPOTLIGHT,itisnecessarytoremovethexenonbulbandplaceitinitsoriginalshippingcontainertopreventbreakage.SeetheSAFETYPROCEDURESsectionfol-lowing,andpermitonlyauthorizedpersonneltohandlethexenonbulb.

INSTALLATION AND SETTING UP SPOTLIGHT
THEXENONGLADIATORIIisshippedinsectionswhichmustbeassembled.Lift-ing straps on the yoke assembly permit assembling the spotlight on the floor and later hoisting it to an elevatedposition.
ASSEMBLETHEFOURBASELEGStothelowersquaresectionofthebasecolumnusingthe3/8-16x2-3/4inchhexheadcapscrewsandlockwashersprovided.Insertalevelingfootandlocknutineachofthefourlegbracketsandlevelthebasebeforecontinuingtheinstallation.
WHENINSTALLEDinapermanentlocation,thelevelingfeetmustberemoved,andtheclearance holes in the base leg brackets used for hardware (user supplied) to bolt the base to the floor or plat-form.Ifitisdesiredtohavetheunitportable,whenoperating,thelevelingfeetmustbeadjusteddownuntiltheweightofthespotlighthasbeenshiftedfromthecasterstothelevelingfeet.
THEINNERTUBEandsupportyokehasthreeholestopermitadjustingtheheightofthespotlight.Thethreeholesareonfourinchcentersandwillallowanopticalheightofapproximately53inches,57 inches, and 61 inches above floor level to the optical center of the lamphouse and lens system. The leveling feetmaybeadjustedthroughanadditionaltwoinchrange.Inserttheheightlocationpinthroughtheholeintheoutertubeandoneoftheholesintheinnertube.
THEHORIZONTALSWINGandverticaltiltlockingknobsareontherighthand(operat-ing)sideoftheyokeassembly.Tightenbothoftheselockingdevicessecurelybeforeattemptingtoplacethelamphouseandlenssystemonthesupportyoke.
PLACETHELAMPHOUSEandlenssystemontheyokeassembly,withthespotsizecon-trolhandletotherighthand(operating)side,thesameasthelockingcontrolsontheyoke.Lineupthefourmountingholesinthebottomofthebaserailwiththefourmatingholesinthesupportyokeandsecureusingthefoursetsof3/8-16screws,nutsandwashers.
ATTACHTHELAMPHOUSECABLECONNECTORtothematingreceptacleonthepowersupply.Thelamphouseandpowersupplyconnectorsarekeyedforcorrectpinalignment;makecertainpinsareseatedbeforetighteningthelockingring.CheckthepositionoftheslideswitchadjacenttotheMScon-nector;itmustbeinthepropersettingfor“Lamphouse/Spotlight.”Seetheinsidefrontcoverofthepowersupplymanual.DONOTenergizethexenonpowersupplybeforethexenonbulbiscorrectlyinstalledintothelamphouse.

SAFETY PROCEDURES
READ CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING XENON BULB
THEXENONBULBishighlypressurized.Whenignited,thenormaloperatingtemperatureofthebulbincreasesthepressuretoalevelatwhichthebulbmayexplodeifnothandledinstrictaccordancetothemanufacturer’soperatinginstructions.
THEBULBisstableatroomtemperature,butmaystillexplodeifdroppedorotherwisemis-handled.Breakageresultingfromtransportandhandlingisnotcoveredbythebulbmanufacturer’swarranty,anditisstronglyrecommendedtodismountthexenonbulbwhentransportingthespotlight.
REFERbulbreplacementandservicetoQUALIFIEDPERSONNELwithadequateprotec-tiveclothing(faceshield,cleancottongloves,welder’sjacket).Forroutinelamphouseservice,observethefollowingrules:
1. Allowthebulbtocooltoroomtemperaturebeforeopeningthelamphouse.Putonprotectiveclothingdescribedabove.
2. De-energizethexenonpowersupplyattheACsourcebeforeopeningthelamphousecompartment.
3. Whenpossible,encase thebulb in itsprotectivecoverwhencleaningorservicing the lamphouseinterior.Thebulb,whenoutsidethelamphouse,mustbeencasedinthecover.
4. Cleanthebulbafterithascooledtoroomtemperature.Donottouchthequartzenvelopeofthebulb;fingerprints will burn in and create hot spots which may shorten bulb life. If fingermarks are made, theyshouldbecarefullyremovedwithmethylalcoholandcottonpriortobulboperation.
5. Neverviewanignitedbulbdirectly.BLINDNESSORPERMANENTEYEDAMAGEMAYBEINCURRED.
6. UseonlyxenonbulbsdesignatedasOZONEFREE.Whenpossible,ventthelamphouseexhausttooutsideatmosphere.
7. Maintainthelamphousebloweringoodoperatingcondition.Keeptheblowerinletcleanforunre-stricted air flow.
8. Toinsuremaximumbulblife,operatethelamphouseblowerandtheexhaustsystemforat leasttenminutesafterextinguishingthebulb.
9. Ifreturningabulbforwarrantyadjustment,packitinitsoriginalshippingcontainer.Completeandreturnallrequiredwarrantyinformation.

10. Disposeofexpiredbulbsthatarebeyondwarrantyinthefollowingmanner:Wrapthebulbtightlyinseverallayersofcanvasorheavycloth.Placeitonahardsurfaceandshattertheenvelopewithasharphammerblow.DONOTplaceanunshatteredbulbinanordinaryrefusecontainer.

BULB INSTALLATION
OBSERVEALLSAFETYPROCEDURESwhenworkingaroundthexenonbulb.Openthelamphouseaccessdoorbyremovingthetamperproofscrewsusingthespecialscrewdriversupplied.Theigniterleadandcontactclamparetiedoffforshipping.Freetheclampandslideitovertherearbulbsupportcollet.
THE BULB SUPPORT YOKE in front of the reflector has three horizontal positioning holes to permitsettingtheheightoftheyoke.TheGladiatorIIusesonlytheuppertwoholes.ThespotlightisshippedsetupforusewiththeHanoviaXH2500HSbulbnormallysuppliedwiththeunit,andthespringpinisthroughthetophole.Becauseofadifferentendcapdimension,thebulbyokemustberaisedandthepininstalledinthecenterholeifanOsramXBO2500W/HSbulbisused.Theyokemayberepositionedbylooseningthe8-32setscrewinthesupportpost.Tightenthesetscrewaftersettingtheyokeposition.
REMOVETHEPLASTICPROTECTIVECOVERfromthexenonbulbonlyifnecessary.Handlethebulbbythemetalendcapsonly.Insertthebulbintothelamphouse,passingtheanode(+)endcapthrough the center hole of the reflector. Take care not to bump or scratch the surface of the reflector.
INSERTTHEANODE(+)PINintotherearsupportcolletandcontactclamp.Restthecathode(-)endcapinthefrontbulbsupportyoke.Seattheanode(+)pinintotherearsupportcolletasfaraspossibleforcorrectfocustravel.Securelytightenthesocketheadclampingscrewintheanodecontact.
RESTTHECATHODEENDCAPinthe“V”ofthebulbyoke.Installthecathodecontactclampoverthecathode(-)pin.Firmlytightenthesocketheadclampingscrewforasecureelectricalcontact.DressthenegativeDCleadattachedtothecontactclampdirectlyinfrontofthebulbsupportyoketominimizetheprojectedshadow.
RECORDthebulbserialnumber,date,andlamphousehoursontheXenonBulbRecordontheinsidebackcoverofthismanual.Thisinformationwillbeneededintheeventofabulbwarrantyadjustment.
ITISRECOMMENDEDtousetheabove-notedlamphousecableswheninstallingthexenonbulb.Anodeleadssuppliedwithbulbsaregenerallyremovable.Ifitisnecessarytousethebulbanodelead,removethelamphouseigniterlead,andusetheclamptosecurethebulbtothesupportcollet.Attachthebulbleadterminaltotheigniterpost;insulatetheleadwellanddresstheleadawayfromgroundedlamphousecomponents.

ESTABLISHAROUTINEofperiodicallycheckingallelectricalconnectionsfortightness.Loosecontacts,particularlyintheDCcircuit,willcauseoverheatinganddamagethexenonbulbandothercomponents.Normalxenonbulbwarrantiesallowno creditforbulbdamagecausedbyoverheating.
REFERTOTHEBULBMANUFACTURER’SINSTRUCTIONSregardingbulbrotation.Mostbulbmanufacturersrecommendrotatingthebulb180°at50%ofwarrantyhours.Afterrotatingthebulb,operateatmaximumallowablecurrentforseveralhours,andthenreturntothenominaloperatingcurrent.
INTHEEVENTofabulbwarrantyclaim,thebulbmustbepackagedinitsoriginalshippingcontainer,andreturnedwithallrequiredwarrantyformscompleted.ContactthedealerthroughwhomthebulbwasoriginallypurchasedforcorrectproceduresandReturnAuthorizations.
ITISACOMMONPRACTICEtoreplacethebulbattheexpirationofitswarrantyperiod.If a xenon bulb explodes in operation, the reflector and other lamphouse components are frequently damaged. Thexenonbulbmanufacturerwillextendno credit for a replacement reflector if the defective bulb is beyond warranty. Explosion-damaged reflectors are to be returned to the bulb supplier,NOTStrongInternational,unlessthebulbwassuppliedbyStrong.

ARC STABILIZATION MAGNET
THEXENONBULBusedintheGladiatorIIlamphouserequiresanarcstabilizationmagnet.This magnet is located on the lamp base behind the reflector. This magnet is preset at the factory and should notrequireadjustment.Shoulditbecomenecessarytoadjustthemagnet,thefollowingproceduremustbefollowed.Observeallbulbsafetyprocedureswhenworkinginthelamphousecompartment.
THENORMALARC,whenviewedthroughthearcviewingport,willappearasinFigure“A.”Thisrepresentsthecorrectmagnetposition.Figure“B”showsthepositionofthearcwhenthemagnetistoolow.RaisethemagnetonitsadjustmentbrackettolowerthearctothepositionillustratedinFigure“A.”Figure“C”showsthepositionofthearcwhenthemagnetistoohigh.LowerthemagnettoraisethearctothepositionillustratedinFigure“A.”
THEMAGNETmustalwaysbeinstalledwiththelongestportionofthemagnetnearestthebulb,andwiththeNORTH(N)polepointingtotheoperatorsideaccessdoor.Reversingthemagnetwill cause bulb flicker, and may inhibit bulb ignition. In new equipment, the magnet is normally in the center oftheadjustmentrange.Changesinthemagnetpositionarerequiredonlytocorrectanimproperlyburningarc(Figure“B”or“C”).
ANY REPLACEMENT MAGNET should first be installed in the center position of the adjustmentrange.RaiseorlowerthemagnetasrequiredtocenterthearcasillustratedinFigure“A.”
OPERATION
INSTALLTHEGLASSHEATFILTERintothebracketmountedontherearofthefadeoutanddousersupporthousing.NOTE:Thecoated side of the filter, with the XX or other marking, must be facing the reflector. Reach through the side door and nose opening of the lamphouse, slide the filter into the slotinthetopanglebracket,andloweritintothebottomslottedbracket.
REMOVETHEPLASTICCOVERfromthexenonbulb.DONOTignitethelampwiththecoveronthebulb.Storethecoverforfuturere-use.
CLOSEANDSECUREthelamphousedoorusingthetamperproofscrewsandspecialscrew-driversuppliedwiththelamphouse.Engagethecamlockandinstallthesecurityscrew.Thedoormustbecompletelysecuredtoactuatetheinterlockswitchandpermitlampignition.PlacetheMODEswitchinthe“MAN.”(manual)position.
TURNONTHEMAINLINESWITCHand/orcircuitbreakertoenergizethexenonpowersupply.Thelamphouseblowerswillstartandtheblowerinterlockswitcheswillbeactuatedtopermitlampignition.Theblowerswilloperatecontinuouslyuntilthexenonpowersupplyisde-energized.
PLACETHELAMPSWITCHinthe“ON”positionandthelampwillignite.Ifignitiondoesnotoccur,orthehighvoltagepulseisnotapparent,presstheemergencyignitionswitchonthetopofthelamphouseundertheplugbutton.Donotholdmorethanone second;releaseimmediatelyuponlampigni-tion.Useoftheemergencyignitionswitchindicatesanabnormalcondition;seetheTROUBLESHOOTINGsectionfollowing.
CHECKTHEREADINGonthelamphouseammeter. Nominalcurrentforthe2500wattxenonbulbis90amperes.DONOT,ATANYTIME,exceed100amperes.Outputcurrentisadjustedatthepowersupply;seepowersupplymanualforinstructions.Operationofanewbulbisnormallystartedatthelowerendofitsrange(80A.),andcurrentisgraduallyincreasedasthebulbagestomaintainlightoutput.
PRESSTHESMALLPUSHBUTTONSWITCHlocatedbelowtheammetertoreadtheDCvoltageatthearc.Thispermitsimmediatecalculationofthepoweratwhichthelampisoperating(voltsxamperes = wattage). Holding this switch in during the ignition cycle will also briefly indicate the “no load” (opencircuit)DCvoltageappliedtothexenonbulbforignition.
REMOVETHEREARCOVERPLATEbelowtheinstrumentpanelbywithdrawingthetwoplasticplungers.Thisexposesthebulbpositioningcontrolsinthelamphousebackcasting.
TOFOCUSTHEXENONBULBandobtainthebestlightonthestage,thetwomethodsoutlinedbelowarethemostsuitable.
MOVETHESPOTSIZECONTROLHANDLE(trombone)onthelargelenscarriageallthewayforwardtoprojectthesmallestspotpossible;placetheiris,maskingshutters(choppers)andthefadeoutdouser blades in their full open positions. Project a spot to a wall or similar flat perpendicular surface opposite thespotlightposition.

THECENTERSECTIONofthebulbpositioningcontrolsisathreadedmemberthatfocusesthe bulb in relation to the reflector. Turning this adjustment moves the bulb in only one plane, into or away from the reflector. Turning this section clockwise moves the bulb away from the reflector. The small knurled screwtotheleftofthissectioncanbetightenedtolockthefocusingmechanismafterthefollowingprocedureshavebeencompleted.
THELARGETHUMBSCREWS,oneithersideofthefocusingcontrol,lockthehorizontalandverticaladjustmentmechanisminposition.
TURNTHECENTERFOCUSINGSECTIONofthebulbpositioningcontrolcounterclock-wiseuntilasmallblackspotisprojectedontothewall.Itmaybebesttorunthisadjustmentbothdirectionsto permit positive identification of the spot.
LOOSENTHETWOTHUMBSCREWS,oneoneithersideofthecenterfocusingsection,justenoughtopermitmanualmovementofthecompleteassembly.Thebulbpositioningcontrolwillnowmovearoundthesetwothumbscrews,andasthiscontrolisshifted,thesmoothshadowofthebulbelectrodecan be seen extending beyond the projected center hole in the reflector. The shadow of the electrode (black spot) must be centered in the projected hole of the reflector (shaded, less dense dark area).
MOVETHECONTROLSECTIONaroundthetwoscrewsuntiltheblackspotisasroundaspossible to project. It may be necessary to again turn the focus control to project a sharply defined black spot.
AFTERTHEBLACKSPOTisasevenaroundtheoutsideaspossibletoproject,andappearscentered in the shaded reflector center hole, tighten the two large thumb screws to lock the position of the mechanism.Turnthecenterfocuscontroltoobtainthebrightestlightwiththebestlightdistribution.Rotatethelensspotfocuscontrolknob,locatedattheextremefrontofthelensmechanism,toobtainthesharpestedgepossibleontheprojectedspot.
THESECONDMETHODoffocusingthexenonbulbistoprojectthespottothestage,andworkingwiththeabovelamphousecontrols,adjustthesecontrolstoobtaina“hotspot”ontheprojectedspot.Thencenterthis“hotspot”ontheprojectedlightbymovingtheentirecontrolsectionaroundthetwothumbscrews.Oncethis“hotspot”iscenteredintheprojectedlight,lockthecontrolinpositionwiththetwothumbscrewsandturnthecentersectiontoobtainaspotwithanevendistributionoflight.Rotatethelensspotfocuscontrolknobtoobtainasharpedgeontheprojectedspot.

THESEADJUSTMENTSshouldnotbedisturbeduntilitisnecessarytoreplacethexenonbulb.Atthattime,theprocedureonobtainingasmooth,roundblackspot,or“hotspot,”mayhavetoberepeated.Replacethecoverplateoverthebulbpositioningcontrols.
BECAUSEOFNORMALBULBAGING,andmanufacturingtolerancesbetweenindividualxenonbulbs,itmaybenecessarytooperatelampsatslightlyhigherorlowercurrentsettingstomaintainuni-formlightoutputwhentwoormorespotlightsareusedinoneinstallation.Thisentailsaslightcurrentoutputadjustmentatthexenonpowersupplies.Seethepowersupplymanual.
TOEXTINGUISHthearc,placetheLAMPswitchontheinstrumentpanelto“OFF.”Thelamphouseblowerswillcontinuetooperateuntilthexenonpowersupplyisde-energized.Allowtheblowerstooperatefortenminutesbeforeturningoffthepowersupply;aforced-airbulbcoolingcycleisrequiredbyallbulbmanufacturers.
DAILYOPERATIONinthe“Manual”moderequiresonlythatthexenonpowersupplybeenergized,theMODEswitchbeleftinthe“MAN.”position,andthelampswitchedONandOFFbymeansoftheLAMPswitch.Nobulbalignmentor“warmup”arenecessary.Alwaysallowforthetenminutebulbcoolingcycle.
OPERATIONINTHE“AUTO”MODEisintendedforuseonlyifthespotlightistobeusedas a fixed spot without an operator at the equipment. Place the MODE switch in the “AUTO” position, and the LAMPswitchto“ON.”Thelampwillignitewhenasustaineddrycontactismadebetweentheautomationleads3and6,andextinguishwhenthecontactisopened.SeetheINSTALLATIONDIAGRAMinthepowersupplymanual.Thelamphouseblowerswilloperateuntilthexenonpowersupplyisde-energized;allowfortenminutesbulbcooling.
BEFOREOPENINGthelamphouseenclosureforservicing,allowtheblowerstooperatefortwentyminutes,oruntilthebulbhascooledtoroomtemperature.
HANDLING THE SPOTLIGHT
GENERALLYTHEBESTPOSITIONfortheoperatortostandishearthecenterofthespot-lightontherightside.Theangleoftilt,thesizeoftheporthole,andthelayoutofthespotlightpositionmaydictateanotherlocation.
EACHOPERATORwill,afterafewminutesofoperation,generallydevelophisownsystemandpositionformostconvenientoperation.
THEHORIZONTALSWINGandverticaltiltareindividuallyadjustabletogivethedesireddegreeoffrictiontosuittheoperator.Thelockingclampsarelocatedontherightsideoftheyokeassembly.

OPERATION OF OPTICAL SYSTEM
THEIRISCONTROListhefrontleverwhichprojectsthroughthetopoftheopticalsystemhousing.Whenthisleveristotheleft(asviewedfromtherearoftheunit),thelargestapertureisprovided.Smalleraperturesareobtainedastheleverismovedtotheright.
THESPOTSIZECONTROLHANDLEislocatedontherighthandsideoftheopticalsystemjust above the base rail. A variation of spot sizes from full flood to small spot can be obtained by moving the spotsizecontrolhandlefromoneextremetotheother.Beamintensityisincreasedbythisopticalsystemwhen reducing from flood to spot, and maximum intensity is reached when the spot size control handle is in theextremeforwardposition.
THEMAXIMUMFLOODSPOTisobtainedwiththeiriscontrollevertotheleft(awayfromop-eratingside)forthelargestapertureandwiththespotsizecontrolhandlemovedasfartotherearaspossible.
SMALLERSIZEDSPOTSareprojectedasthespotsizecontrolhandleismovedforward.Mostofthespotsizesneededwillbeproducedwiththeirisinitsmaximumopenposition.
FORA“HEADSPOT,”oranyspotsmallerthancanbeobtainedwiththespotsizecontrolhandleinitsextremeforwardposition,shifttheiriscontrollevertotheleft(awayfromoperatingside)forasmalleraperture.Theiriscontrollevershouldalwaysbereturnedtoitsextremerightpositionbeforethespotsizecontrolhandleisagainmovedtoobtainlargerspots.
THEMASKINGSHUTTER(chopper)leveristhemiddleleverprojectingthroughthetopoftheopticalsystemhousing.Themaskingshutterbladesareoperatedbythislevertoshapetheprojectedspottoarectangle,stripspot,ordousing.
THEDISENGAGEDPOSITIONofthemaskingshutterleveristotheextremeright(towardoperatingside)andvaryingdegreesofmaskingtocompletecutoffareobtainedbymovingthelevertotheleft(awayfromoperatingside).
THEANGLEofthemaskingshutterbladescanbeadjustedtocompensateforthehorizontalprojectionangle.Removethecolorboomerangandopticalsystemhousing,andloosenthescrewsholdingeachofthemaskingshutterbladesenoughtoallowadjustments.Ignitethebulbandadjusttheangleofthebottombladebytappingwithascrewdriversoitsprojectededgeliesparalleltothefootlights.Tightenthescrew.Operatethemaskingshutterlevertoclosetheblades.Adjusttheupperbladetocloseinlinewiththebottombladeandtightenthescrew.
THEFADEOUTMECHANISMANDDOUSERCONTROL is the rear lever projectingthroughthetopoftheopticalsystemcover.Thislevercontrolstheintensityoflightfromcompletefadeoutwhentheleveristotheleft,tofullintensitywhentheleveristotheright.
THESPOTFOCUSINGCONTROLKNOBislocatedontheoperatingsideoftheopticalsystemattheforwardendabovethebaserail.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjusttheopticalsystemforthelengthofthrow.Whenmakinganadjustment,rotatethespotfocusingcontrolknobuntilthesharpestedgeisobtainedontheprojectedspot.

OPERATION OF COLOR BOOMERANG
THE COLOR BOOMERANG is equipped with six color holders and an ultraviolet filter. Additional filter holders can be supplied by an authorized Strong International Dealer.
TO OPERATE INDIVIDUAL COLOR FILTERS, lower the desired filter selector lever. A rocker catch located in the color disc housing holds the filter in position.
TO RELEASE A COLOR, push the filter release button or engage another color, thus releasing thepreviouscolorautomatically.
TOREPLACEAFILTERHOLDER,openthehingedtopofthecolordischousingandliftout the desired filter holder.
HIGHTEMPERATUREFILTERS(RoscoLux®orequivalent)cuttonineinchdiameterarerequired, and are secured in the filter holders with paper fasteners.
NOTE:WHENPLACINGCOLORFILTERSintheboomerang,thelessdensecolors(pink,amber)shouldbeplacedintheholderstowardtherearoftheboomerang(towardarc),andthoseofgreaterdensity(red,green)shouldbeplacedintheholderstowardthefrontoftheboomerang(awayfromthearc).

MAINTENANCE
THEXENONGLADIATORIISPOTLIGHTrequiresverylittlemaintenancetokeepitingoodworkingorder.
THEREFLECTORshouldbecleanedperiodicallywithasoft,clean,lint-freeclothtore-move dust from the reflecting surface. If excessively soiled, the reflector may be cleaned with Windex®oranequivalent glass cleaner. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners of any kind. Clean the heat filter glass; replace with thecoatedsurfacetowardthelamphouse.
CHECKALLELECTRICALCONNECTIONSfortightnessonaregularbasis.Looseconnec-tions,particularlyintheDCcircuit,maycauseprematurebulbfailureanddamagelamphousecomponents.
LUBRICATEthebulbsealblowerandthelensblowerwithtwoorthreedropsofnon-detergentoilonceeverysixmonths.Theexhaustblowerispermanentlylubricated.
THEXENONBULBshouldbecheckedoccasionallyforthepresenceofdustorforeignma-terials.Ifnecessary,cleanthequartzenvelopeofthebulbwithalcohol,andwipedrywithaclean,lint-freecloth.Observeallsafetyprocedureswhenworkingwiththeexposedbulb.
THEINSIDEOFTHELAMPHOUSEandtheblowersquirrelcagesshouldbecleanedperi-odically,dependingonthedustconditionsateachinstallation.Keeptheblowerinletandoutletgrillescleanto permit free air flow. Clean the actuator arms of the air flow switches to prevent dust build-up.
THELENSSYSTEMshouldbekeptcleantopreventanylightreductionintheprojectedspot.Tightenthehorizontalswingandverticaltiltlockingclamps.Removethecolorgelstoreachandcleanthebacksurfaceofthelargelens.Removethecovercastingoverthefadeout,chopper,andiriscontrolstoremovethesmallprojectionlenswhichisheldinplacewithalargespring-typeretainerringatthefrontofthelensbarrel.
CLEANTHEPROJECTIONLENSandlargelenswithwithanycleanerapprovedforuseoncoatedprojectionlenses.ReplacetheBuhlprojectionlenswiththeendwiththeFLmarkingringtowardtheiris;theISCOlenstubehasarrowsindicatingtheendnearesttheiris.Securewiththeretainerring.
BEFORETRANSPORTINGthespotlight,removethexenonbulbfromthelamphouse.Placethebulbinitsplasticcoverandoriginalshippingcontainer.

PRINCIPLE OF IGNITER OPERATION
THEIGNITERisenergizedthroughthe115V.ACcontrolcircuitwhentheLAMP“ON-OFF”switch (S2) is depressed and all interlocks and air flow switches are closed.
CAUTION:DonotusetheEmergencyIgnitionswitch(S102)intheigniteruntilitisdeter-minedthatthepolarityofthexenonbulbiscorrect.UseoftheS102switchbypassesthepolaritysensingdiode(CR201)ontheigniterprintedcircuitboard;ifpolarityisnotcorrect,thebulbwillbeseriouslydamagedordestroyed.No creditisallowedonbulbsdamagedbyreversedpolarity.
THEIGNITERsuppliesahighRFvoltagepulsetothebulb,togetherwiththehigh“NoLoad”DCvoltagefromthexenonpowersupply,toignitethexenonbulb.Afterthearcissustained,theACcircuitintheigniterisinterruptedbytheopeningofK201relaycontactsonthesignalofthetimercircuitonthePCboard.TheDCoutputofthexenonpowersupplyisautomaticallyloweredtothepowerlevelrequiredtomaintainthearc.TheDCpowertothebulbisdependentuponthebulbcharacteristicsandthesettingoftheoutputofthexenonpowersupply.
DCVOLTAGEisappliedtotheprintedcircuitboardfromthexenonpowersupply,energizingthe12V.DCcoilandclosingthecontactsofK201relay,completingtheACcircuitthroughtheignitertotheT102 high voltage (10 kV.) transformer. High voltage boost capacitor C107 is charged to a voltage sufficient tocausebreakdownacrosstheE101sparkgap.Approximately35kV.issuppliedtothexenonbulbforigni-tion.
S101istheignitercoverinterlockswitchandS102istheEmergencyIgnitionswitch,whichisabypassfortheK201relaycontactsandCR201polaritysensingdiodeonthePCboard. ComponentsC101,102,and103functionasRFbypasscapacitorsontheigniter.TheC108capacitorservesasacouplingcapacitortothecurrentcoil.

TROUBLE CHART
NORMAL OPERATION
WHENTHESWITCHinthemainACsupplylinetothexenonpowersupplyisintheONposition,andthe30A.circuitbreakerontheswitchingpowersupplyisON,thePOWERlightonthexenonpowersupplywillglow.Thelamphouseandpowersupplyblowerswillstart.NOTE:EarlymodelStrongSwitchingPowerSupplyblowersmaynotstartuntiltheLAMPswitchhasbeenclosed.
OPERATION OF THE LAMPHOUSE BLOWERS will close the (2) air flow interlock switches (intakeandexhaust),andifthelamphousedoorisclosedandcorrectlysecured,thecontrolcircuittotheLAMPswitchwillbecompleted.
THEMODESWITCH,locatedonthelamphouseinstrumentpanel,shouldbeinthe“MAN.”(Manual)position.Thisenablesignitioncontrolfromtheinstrumentpanel,andisthenormalmodeofspotlightoperation.
WHENTHELAMPSWITCHisplacedintheONposition,theACcontrolcircuitinthelamphousewillenergizethepowersupplycircuitryprovidingDCcurrenttotheigniterandbulb.IfanearlymodelStrongswitchingtypepowersupplyisused,thepowersupplyblowerswillstartatthispoint.
THEREWILLBEadistinctlyaudiblehighvoltagearcpingattheigniterarcgapandacrossthebulbelectrodes.Thebulbshouldigniteimmediatelyafteroneortwoofthesehighvoltagepulses,andthelampcurrentwilladjusttotheoutputsettingofthexenonpowersupply.MultipleignitionpulsespriortobulbignitionnormallyindicatealowDCoutputsetting.Seexenonpowersupplymanual.A“warm”oragedxenonbulbmightalsorequiremultiplestrikes.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
IFTHEXENONBULBdoesnotignite,observethefollowingoperationalsequencesforas-sistanceinlocatingandisolatingthetroublearea.
WHENTHEFAN(S)andtheindicatorlightonthepowersupplyareon,theACcircuitinthepowersupplyistroublefreeuptotheterminalblockinthepowersupply.
ATTHISTIME,thelamphouseblowersshouldoperate.Ifthisdoesnotoccur,thetroubleisinthecoverinterlockswitch,theaccesspanelinterlockswitch,theblowermotor,alooseconnection,abroken#2or#4lead,orablownF1sealblowerfuse.Checkthe1.5A.fuseinthein-linefuseholder.CAUTION:TopreventbulbignitionwhencheckingtheACcontrolcircuitinthelamphouse,removelead#10fromtheigniterterminalstrip.
CHECKATTHISTIMEfor115 V.AC Control Voltageattheaccessdoorinterlockswitch(wires2&4),andtheblowerterminals(9&12).Thedoorinterlockswitchmustbemanuallyactuatedtoenergizetheblowers.Replace#10leadbeforeproceeding.

THE VANES on the air flow switches should raise. With the MODE switch in the “MAN.” positionandtheLAMPswitchinthe“ON”position,therunningtimemetershouldstartandindicateelapsedtime.Ifthismeterdoesnotoperate,checkforcontinuityattheMODEandLAMPswitches.
ADEFECTIVERUNNINGTIMEMETERwillnot preventbulbignition.
WITHTHE“LAMP”SWITCHinthe“ON”position,adistincthighvoltagearcpingshouldbe heard at the spark gap in the igniter, and the flash of the xenon bulb should be visible through the ammeter asahighDCvoltagepulseisappliedacrossthebulbelectrodes.
IF THE HIGH VOLTAGE PING or the flash at the ammeter is not apparent, check for 115 V.ACatterminals5&6attheterminalboard.If115V.ACispresent,andterminalsaretight,checkthenthe“No Load” DC Voltagebetweenthelamphouseandpowersupply.Removeeitherlead#5or#6attheterminalboardtopreventbulbignitionanddefeatthedoorinterlockswitch.ChecktheDCvoltageacrossterminals#10(-)and#15(+).Areadingof85V.DCshouldbemeasuredifusingahighreactancepowersupply;120-170V.DCifusingaswitchingtype.Ifthisvoltageisnotindicated,theproblemisintheleadsbetweenthelamphouseandpowersupply,orinthepowersupplyboostcircuit.Seethetroubleshootingsectionofthepowersupplymanualforadditionalinstructions.Replacelead#5or#6attheigniterbeforeproceeding.
THESWITCHING-TYPEXENONPOWERSUPPLYfurnishedwiththespotlightsystemincludesthermaloverloadswitchesandprotectioncircuitstopreventdamageresultingfromhighorlowinputvoltage.LossofDCopencircuitvoltage,oraninterruptionofDCsustainingcurrent,maybetracedtothesecircuits.Seethepowersupplymanual.
IGNITERPRINTEDCIRCUITBOARD40913isrequiredforusewiththeswitchingtypexenonpowersupply.Ifthelamphouseisequippedwithanoldertype,replaceitwiththe40913board.Ifthelamphouseignitesonlybymeansoftheemergencyignitionswitch,replacetheigniterPCboard.
IFTHEHIGHVOLTAGEARCisaudibleatthelamphouseandthebulbdoesnot flash, check foralamphouseDCleadarcingtoground.Ifnogroundfaultisdetected,replacethebulbandattemptignitionwiththenewbulb.
IF THE HIGH VOLTAGE ARC is audible at the lamphouse, the flash of the bulb is visible in theammeter,butignitionofthebulbisnotsustained,theproblemareaisinthepowersupply.Seethetroubleshootingsectionofthepowersupplymanualforadditionalinstructions.
IFTHEHIGHVOLTAGEARCisnot audible or the flash of the bulb visible, the problem is intheigniterorigniterPCboardassembly.
EXCHANGEofcomponents(i.e.igniters,printedcircuitboards)betweentwosimilarStrongXenonGladiatorstoaidindiagnosisofaproblemisencouraged.Thiswillnotleadtoequipmentdamage,andwillnotvoidequipmentwarranty.
