Dear Alumni and Friends:

I’m excited to share our vast selection of curated experiences for our 2020 travel season. With 35 destinations spanning all continents, there’s something for every traveller. This year we’re offering several of our ever-popular tours, plus some unique new trips: Uzbekistan, Slovenia, a walking tour in Portugal and Great Journey through Europe, just to mention a few.

If you’ve joined us in the past, you already know about the calibre of the U of T Alumni Travel Program. In fact, we welcome an average of 44 per cent repeat travellers annually. Some go on two or three trips each year. Others have made as many as 24 trips. Alumni, faculty, staff, their family and friends return for many reasons: the eclectic range of destinations, the quality of the educational tours and our focus on your safety, enjoyment and comfort. We worry about the arrangements so you don’t have to. Just travel in style while immersing yourself in the local culture and enhancing your lifelong learning.

I hope to join you for a tour in the not-too-distant future. Until then, come connect with fellow alumni, reconnect with old friends and make new ones as you explore the world together.

With best wishes,

Daphne TaoManager, Alumni Travel

Can non-U of T alumni travel with me?Alumni, faculty members and current and retired staff, their family and friends, and other members of the U of T community are all welcome on our trips.

Do I have the option to book my own flights?Yes. However, when you book flights through our tour operators, you enjoy the convenience of one travel provider planning your entire trip, including transfers. Organizing your own flights generally means you’re responsible for your own transfers. Also, when our tour operator books your flight, their air department can monitor flights and then change or assist with your rescheduling if necessary, often without any delays.

Can I travel on different dates than the group travel dates?Yes, many travellers go a day or two early to acclimatize to the new time zone. Others add a few days onto the end of their trip. Please contact the tour operator at least 60 days prior to departure to find out about associated fees and availability. Can I choose to fly business class?Yes. Please contact the tour operator about the cost and availability of upgrading your flight.

Why do certain prices begin with "From"?Price points vary for rail cars and ships. We quote the lowest available price.

Might I meet alumni from other universities? On most of our tours, you’ll travel with alumni from other Canadian and/or American universities.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are most tours priced in US dollars? Our travel partners plan trips up to two years ahead of time and their suppliers generally expect advance payment in US dollars or euros. If travel partners had to convert to Canadian dollars months in advance, they would have to speculate the value of the Canadian dollar at the time of trip booking. Calculations over the past several years show that US-dollar pricing—as opposed to speculation—has worked in favour of our travellers.

Do I need trip insurance? We strongly advise travellers to obtain coverage for trip cancellation, interruption and medical emergencies. You can purchase travel insurance through the tour operator. What medical precautions should I take?Check in with your doctor about your general health and any immunizations the host country/countries may require. Please carry a complete list of your medications, allergies and the phone numbers of your doctor, emergency contact and medical insurance company.

How long must my passport be valid for?Canadian citizens require a passport that’s valid for at least six months beyond the date of return from their destination. This is not a Government of Canada rule but most countries we visit abide by it. If your Canadian passport expires within six months of your date of return, you must get a new pass-port before departing Canada.

For more information, contact the travel partner listed beside the trip you’ve selected. Their contact information appears on page 24.

In each program, the educational aspect is different but the intent is the same—to provide an opportunity for travellers to enjoy themselves and enrich their lives. Stimulating lectures and insights will be provided by local experts or university professors, where possible. On some trips, you can participate in an open panel discussion with local residents and learn about modern-day life in their community.

If you are inspired to learn more about the region that you are visiting, the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies offers related courses that change annually. Please visit: learn.utoronto.ca for more information.
