IntroductionCreo Color Servers are the premier solution for print on-demand professionals.

Creo Color Servers optimize the performance of Xerox Digital Color Printers/Presses,

enabling you to take advantage of all the benefits of on-demand digital color printing.

Creo Color Servers can be configured to suit your needs, whether you are a commercial

printer, creative services shop, quick printer, or in-house printer. Superior image quality,

high productivity, and robust variable data printing (VDP) capabilities make the Creo

Color Servers a wise business choice.

This hands-on guide demonstrates selected features of the Xerox CX Print Server,

Powered by Creo for the Xerox 700 Digital Color Press.

The CX Print Server, for the Xerox 700 Digital Color Press, is available in a base

configuration designed to meet any digital print production requirement, with the

ability to add on two professional packages: the Advanced Color Tools Package, and the

Advanced Productivity Package. Building upon the functionality of the base high-speed

CX Print Server configuration, the Advanced Color Tools Package and Advanced

Productivity Package configurations enable you to increase your print volume and the

overall efficiency of your entire workflow.

5Introduction / How to Use This Guide

How to Use This GuideEach feature is demonstrated in a two-page spread. The left-hand page contains a

description of the advantages and main points for narration. The right-hand page

contains an illustration from the CX Print Server screen, and step-by-step instructions

for demonstrating the feature.

At the beginning of each demonstration, the guide lists the name of the sample file and

the paper size required for the procedure. For fast and easy reference, key benefit icons

are included.

In many cases, the instructions in this guide are applicable when demonstrating

different Creo Color Servers for Xerox Presses/Printers.

The enclosed CD includes the files you need to perform all the demonstrations in this

guide. In it you will find two folders:

• Europe

• USA

The Europe and USA folders contain demo sample files in European and USA paper

sizes, respectively. When relevant, the names of the files include a suffix that reflects

the appropriate paper size.

During the demonstration, select the folder that is best suited to your needs and use

the files found in that folder.

Important: For most features, you can process the files on the CX Print Server

without printing them. However, you will have a clearer understanding if you watch

the complete process, experience the speed, and also observe the quality of the final

printed output.

Note: When certain procedures in this guide require the Advanced Color Tools

Package or the Advanced Productivity Package, it will be noted in the demonstration

instructions.

The CX Print Server offers advanced, professional color-management tools

based on powerful, proven Creo Color Server technology. The tools are

easy to use and highly effective in delivering consistent, accurate color and

excellent image quality. For the novice user, the controller’s image and color

management tools are easy to use. For experts, sophisticated controls are

available for precise image adjustments. It is fast and easy to make critical

corrections and calibration adjustments, to refine image quality, gradation,

brightness, and more without returning to the original application or reRIPing

the job.

Connectivity to Graphic Arts Workflows

Document Printing

Built-In Variable Data Printing

The CX Print Server can be integrated smoothly into the graphic arts

environment. Thanks to its built-in JDF capabilities, you can seamlessly

integrate offset and digital printing operations for faster turnaround times

and reduced labor. The CX Print Server connects with leading workflow

management systems, such as Kodak Brisque and Kodak Prinergy Workflow

Systems, and quickly processes native graphic arts file formats. Short-run or

urgent jobs can be easily routed from Prinergy and Brisque Systems and other

JDF-based offset workflow systems to the digital workflow.

The CX Print Server offers a rich set of features to help you increase your

printing volume and to differentiate your services with high productivity

and the ability to print on broad variety of paper stocks. The CX Print Server

supports entry-level and professional finishing configurations. It grows with

your business, and adapts to any future configuration upgrades.

The CX Print Server is a powerful variable data printing (VDP) processor

and efficiently processes even the most complex variable data jobs. It

enables you to quickly generate complex, graphically rich, one-to-one

marketing materials. The CX Print Server supports all leading VDP formats,

including Variable Print Specification (VPS), Xerox VIPP, PPML, PDF, and

Adobe PostScript.

Preparing for the DemoSetting Up for the DemonstrationMake sure that these types of plain paper are available during the demonstration:

A4 or 8.5x11•

A3 or Tabloid (in tray 1) •

12×18 or SRA3•

Set up for the demo as follows:

On the 1. Creo Color Server, navigate to D:\Shared and create a new folder named Demo.

Insert the CD into your computer, and copy the folders from the CD to 2. D:\Shared\Demo.

On the toolbar, select 3. Tools > Settings, and under Localization, make sure that the units of

measurement are set to Millimeters or Inches, according to your needs.

In the 4. Resource Center, double-click the ProcessPrint virtual printer and then click Edit.

On the 5. Paper Stock tab, make sure that the paper size settings correspond to the paper that

you loaded in the printer: A4 or 8.5x11 and the Tray parameter is set to Auto.

Installing the Print Driver Software on the Microsoft Windows OSFrom the 1. Start menu select Settings > Printers & Faxes.

Double-click 2. Add Printer.

Click 3. Next.

Select 4. A Network printer, or a printer attached to another computer and click Next.

Select 5. Connect to this printer (or to browse for a printer, select this option and click Next).

In the 6. Name box, type the exact name of the network printer:

\\<server_name>\<server_name>_ProcessPrint and click Next.

Verify that 7. No is selected when you are prompted to set the printer as your default printer

(in case you have more than one printer) and click Next.

Click 8. Finish.

Select 9. Start > Run, and type \\<server_name>\Shared\Demo,

where <server_name> stands for the actual name of the server.

For example, if the server’s name is Server-01, type this: \\Server-01\Shared\Demo.

Open one of the PDF files.10.

In the 11. Adobe Acrobat Software, from the File menu, select Print and click the Properties button.

Make sure that the Print Driver appears in the 12. Name list.

Installing the Print Driver Software on the Macintosh OS X (10.4 or later)

From the 1. Go menu, select Connect to Server.

In the 2. Server Address box, type your server address, and click Connect.

In the 3. Connect As area, select Guest.

Click 4. Connect.

Select 5. Utilities and click OK.

Select the 6. Mac Utilities folder.

Double-click CX700_V1_ColorServerPrintDriverInstaller.dmg.7.

Double-click the CX700_V1_ColorServerPrintDriverInstaller file.8.

Click 9. Continue.

In the warning message window, click 10. Continue.

In the Software License Agreement window, click 11. Continue.

Click 12. Agree to agree to the terms and continue with the installation

procedure.

In the 13. Select Destination window, select the hard disk, and click Continue.

Click 14. Install.

Type your name (if necessary) and password, and click 15. OK.

Click 16. Close.

The Print Driver Software is now installed. 17.

During the print driver installation process, the PPD files are also installed.

Installing the SpectrophotometerOn the 1. Tools menu, select Settings.

Under 2. Calibration Device, select Use external calibrating device,

and then click Save.

Connect the 3. X-Rite Eye-One Spectrophotometer to the USB port of the CX

Print Server, and proceed through the installation wizard to install the device.

Note: The installation process is required only the first time that you connect

the spectrophotometer.

Place the spectrophotometer on its plate, and press the button on the 4.

spectrophotometer.

The spectrophotometer undergoes calibration.

Note: the Eye-One Spectrophotometer installation is supported also from a client

using Remote Workspace tool.

Adding a Virtual Printer to a Client WorkstationOn the client workstation, select 1. Start > Run, and type the name of the server as follows: \\<server_name>.

For example, if the server’s name is Server-01, type this: \\<Server-01>

Click 2. OK.

To add a virtual printer, double-click it. For example, double click the 3. ProcessPrint virtual printer.

The printer is added to the list of printers on your computer.4.

Installing the EZ Connect Software on the Client WorkstationOn the client workstation, select 1. Start > Run, and type \\<server_name>\Utilities\PC utilities,

where <server_name> stands for the actual name of the server.

For example, if the server’s name is Server-01, type this: \\Server-01\Utilities\PC utilities

Click 2. OK.

In the PC utilities folder, locate the 3. EZConnect_v1_0_Setup.exe file and double click it.

The EZ Connect utility is installed on your computer. The EZ Connect installer informs you when 4.

the installation process is complete.

Click 5. OK.

Handling Conflict Warnings

In some of the procedures, you may see conflict warnings. In all cases, click Cancel on these conflict warnings. If doing

so leads to the appearance of another conflict warning, click Cancel on that one too, and so on as many times as

necessary, until you arrive at the job ticket.

Using the CX Print Server as a True Network Printer

You can print from any network-connected computer to the CX Print Server.

Remote users can send files directly from their computer to the Xerox Printer. Print

parameters can be controlled from the client computer, using the enhanced user

interface of the Print Driver Software. The job’s print parameters can be saved as a

profile for future use. Profiles are useful for reprints of the same job, and for printing

several jobs using the same settings.

Secured Printing

The secured printing feature controls and protects printing of sensitive data. You can

lock a job by entering a password on the client workstation in the Print Driver. Once

the controlled job is submitted to the color server, it can only be accessed with

a password. You can perform actions to the controlled job only if you submit the

password on the color server.

This demonstration shows you how to print from a remote Microsoft Windows XP

Workstation. You’ll see how to add the CX Print Server’s virtual printers to a client

workstation, how to set the print parameters, and how to send a PDF file from the

workstation to the Xerox Printer.

Note: Do not install the Print Driver Software on the CX Print Server.

Note: Before you start this procedure, add the ProcessPrint virtual printer as a network printer to the Windows

Workstation. For information on how to add a network printer, see the Preparing for the Demo section.

On your client workstation desktop, select 1. Start > Run, and type \\<server_name>\Shared\Demo.

For example, if the server’s name is Server-01, type this: \\Server-01\Shared\Demo.

Click 2. OK.

In the 3. Demo folder, double-click the file Catalog.pdf.

In 4. Adobe Acrobat Software, from the File menu, select Print and then, select the predefined

ProcessPrint virtual printer for your server.

Click the 5. Properties button.

The Print Driver Software window opens. This might take a few minutes the first time you do it.

In the 6. Number of Copies box, type 3.

Select the 7. Print Method parameter.

In the 8. Print Method list, select Duplex Head to Head.

Click the 9. Paper Stock parameter, make sure that the paper size is set to A4 or 8.5x11.

Click the 10. lock button , and in the Secure Printing window type 1234, and click OK.

The password you use must have four digits, no more, no less.

Click the 11. Save Settings button , type the name Catalog_demo, and save the settings to your desktop.

Note: You can use saved settings at a later time.

To close the Print Driver Software window, click 12. OK.

In the 13. Adobe Acrobat Print dialog box, click OK.

On the CX Print Server, in the 14. Print Queue, right-click the job, and select Release to Print.

Type 15. 1234, and click OK.

Three double-sided copies are printed.


Printing From a Client Workstation Using Hot Folders Automate Printing With Hot Folder Presets

In printing environments, printing jobs quickly and efficiently adds to overall

productivity. Many jobs can be printed via Hot Folders, allowing printers to send preset

jobs directly to the printer saving time and eliminating errors.

When you connect over the network from a client workstation to the CX Print Server,

you can use Hot Folders to submit jobs. To submit a job, simply drop it into the

appropriate Hot Folder and it appears in the CX Print Server Process Queue or Storage

area (depending on the workflow). If the CX Print Server application is not active, any

file in a Hot Folder will be imported and processed on start-up.

Hot Folders can contain any supported file format; PostScript, PDF, EPS, PRN,

VPS, PPML, TIF, and JPG. The CX Print Server has three default Hot Folders, each

corresponding to one of the three default printers: HF_ProcessPrint, HF_ProcessStore,

and HF_SpoolStore.

To create a short cut to commonly-used Hot Folders, drag the Hot Folder icon to

your desktop.

In this demonstration, you will work on a client workstation, and create a Virtual Printer,

set printing settings for it, and print a file by dropping it into the Virtual Printer’s Hot

Folder.

Note: The CX Print Server also has the Microsoft Office Hot Folder tool available,

which is ideal for office printing.

15Printing From a Client Workstation Using Hot Folders

On the toolbar, click the 1. Resource Center button .

Click the 2. New button .

Fill in the following options in the 3. Add Virtual Printer dialog box:

Name: Imposition, Based on: ProcessPrint.

Click 4. Edit.

Select the 5. Paper Stock parameter.

In the 6. Paper Size list, select 8.5x11 or A4.

Click the 7. Layout parameter and check Fit to Output Sheet Size.

Select the 8. Imposition tab.

In the 9. Method list, select Cut & Stack.

Select the 10. Size parameter.

From the 11. Trim Size list, select 8.5x11 or A4.

Click 12. Save, and then OK.

The new printer appears in the Virtual Printers list.

Click 13. Close.

On the client workstation, select 14. Start > Run, type \\<server_name>.

Click 15. OK. The subdirectory of Hot Folders appears.

Drag the hot folder 16. HF_Imposition to the client workstation desktop

and save the hot folder shortcut.

From the client workstation drag the 17. Catalog.pdf file into the hot folder.

Go to the CX Print Server. The Catalog.pdf job is processed

and printed on 8.5x11 or A4 paper.


Importing and Printing Files The Simple Way to Print

The CX Print Server’s user interface is easy to use, yet robust enough to meet the

functional requirements of professional full-color digital printing. It is based on

Microsoft Windows Operating System, making it compatible with most networking

environments.

When importing a job to the server, or when sending it over the network, you can

select from one of several customized parameter sets in the list of defined Virtual

Printers. For example, you may choose to set the image quality differently when

printing presentations or catalogs.

The CX Print Server processes print jobs into ready-to-print (RTP) files, which contains

the raster data that represent pages exactly as they will print, the original PDL file and

the job ticket. RTP files can be previewed and adjusted on the controller for quality

assurance and fine-tuning after a job has been RIPed, but before it is printed, without

the need to reRIP.

In this demonstration, you will import a PDF file and process it into an RTP file type

using a Virtual Printer. The RTP file will then be printed on the Xerox 700 Digital

Color Press.

17Importing and Printing Files

On the toolbar, click the 1. Import button .

In the Look in list, navigate to 2. D:\Shared\Demo, and double-click the file Liquor.pdf.

The job appears in the lower list of the 3. Import window.

In the 4. Virtual Printer list, make sure that the ProcessPrint virtual printer is selected.

Click 5. Import.

The job appears in the Process Queue and after processing is complete,

it goes to the Print Queue for printing.

After printing, the job is stored in the Storage area.


Adjusting Print Parameters Control Job Printing by Easily Defining Parameters

The CX Print Server Print Driver Software enables you to set job parameters when

printing to the CX Print Server from any application on your Windows-based and

Macintosh-based client workstation. In the Print Driver Software window, you can

perform the following actions:

∑ Set job parameters•

∑ Save job parameters’ settings•

∑ Load a saved set of parameters•

∑ Check the status of the CX Print Server•

∑ Define • PostScript settings for the job

∑ Password-protect a job•

The Print Driver Software is automatically installed in the Windows-based client

workstation when you set up a network printer. When working with a Macintosh client

workstation, you must install the Print Driver Software manually.

In this demonstration, you will import a job, adjust the print method and the number of

copies, and print the job using the Print Driver Software.

Note: Do not install the Print Driver Software on the CX Print Server.

In the 1. Process Queue, click the Stop button .

Import the 2. Liquor.pdf file.

In the suspended 3. Process Queue, double-click the Liquor.pdf job.

In the 4. Number of copies box, type 10.

Click5. Print Method.


Click the 7. Paper Stock parameter.

In the 8. Paper Size list, select A4 or 8.5x11.

Click 9. Save.

In the suspended 10. Process Queue, click the Start button .

The job is processed. It then appears in the Print Queue while

10 copies are printed on both sides of the paper.

Finally, it appears in the Storage area in an RTP format.


Allow Multiple Users to Operate the CX Print Server

EZ Connect enables a print provider to centralize the remote application tools. This

allows the operators to access the Remote Workspace, view the status of all connected

printers, search for jobs on multiple servers and use the web-viewer for monitoring.

The CX Print Server can be accessed from one or more client workstations on the

network with the Remote Workspace. All CX Print Servers and connected printers can

be viewed and controlled, and jobs can be forwarded from one server to another.

Up to thirteen operators can view all connected remote workstations, manage job

queues, set job parameters and more, to help increase productivity and automate the

workflow.

In this demonstration, you will launch the EZ Connect software, add a server, and

access the Remote Workspace on a PC.

Starting the EZ Connect SoftwareOn the desktop of your client workstation, select 1. Start > Programs > EZConnect > EZConnect Runner.

On the taskbar, double-click the EZ Connect icon . 2.

Setting Up the EZ Connect SoftwareOn the right-hand side of the EZ Connect window, click the 1. Settings button , and select Setup.

Click 2. New.

In the 3. Hostname/IP box, type the server’s name or IP address.

In the 4. Display Name box, type a name for the server. For example, Server-01.

In the 5. Type list, select CX700.

Click 6. Connect.

The server appears in the EZ Connect Setup window.

Select the server that you just added.7.

In the 8. Default Launch Application list, select Remote Workspace.

In the 9. Language list, select the language of your preference, and click Save.

Opening the Remote Workspace ToolIn the 1. EZ Connect window, double-click the server that you added.

A message asks if you want to download the 2. Remote Workspace software—click OK.

In the 3. Logon window, click Logon.

The 4. Remote Workspace window appears.

Select 2. Web Viewer.

The Web Viewer appears and displays Print Queue and Process Queue information.

It also displays Storage area information and messages.


Process and Print Urgent Jobs Faster, and Increase Productivity

When you have a job that’s urgent, you can submit it for printing and run it before

other jobs. If you submit a Rush Job while another job is being processed or printed, the

later job pauses temporarily but retains its running status. When the Rush Job finishes

processing or printing, the paused job continues.

In this demonstration you will learn how set up and run a Rush Job.

23Setting up a Rush Job

Processing a Rush Job1. In the 1. Print Queue click the Stop button until it turns red. This indicates a suspended

Process Queue.

You need to suspend the Process Queue so that you can change print parameters before the

job gets processed and prints.

Import three or four large jobs to the 2. ProcessStore virtual printer.

Note: The jobs need to be sufficiently large so that they are still running by the time you

prioritize a later job to Run immediately.

In the 3. Print Queue, click the Start button .

The jobs begin printing.

Import the 4. Strawberries.pdf file.

In the 5. Print Queue, right-click the Strawberries.pdf job and select Run immediately.

The job appears at the top of the 6. Print Queue and runs immediately.

Note: You can only designate jobs effectively as rush jobs if Job Batching is disabled. If Job

Batching is enabled, then the jobs in a queue will be processed as a batch and your rush job can

only be processed after the batch is complete.

Disabling Job BatchingSelect 1. File > Preferences > Queues Manager.

In the 2. Job Batching Policy area, select Disable Job Batching.


Using Adobe Acrobat for Last-Minute Preview

In professional environments, tight job control is essential. With the CX Print Server,

quality-control checkpoints can be inserted in the work in progress. Operators can

easily preview files before and after a file is RIPed. A file’s content can be quickly

validated and corrections made before jobs are processed, saving valuable time in the

correction cycle.

Using Adobe Acrobat Software, operators can preview PDF and PostScript files, and

variable data (VDP) jobs. VDP editing is very flexible: the operator can check that

the variable data is correctly positioned at all points in the variable print run, and can

replace one or more of the job’s pages.

In this demonstration, you will preview a PDF file before it is RIPed using Adobe

Acrobat Software.

Import the 1. Flower_RGB.pdf to the SpoolStore virtual printer.

The job appears in the Storage area in its original file format.

In the Storage area, right-click the file 2. Flower_RGB.pdf job, and select Job Preview & Editor.

The Adobe Acrobat Software opens displaying the Flower_RGB.pdf file.

When you finish examining the image, close the file.3.

In the Storage area, right-click the file, and select 4. Submit.

The job is printed and then saved in the Storage area as an RTP job.

Note: This job will be used for comparison in the next procedure.


Previewing and Editing: Post-RIP Viewing and Adjusting RTP Files for Optimum Print Quality

The CX Print Server includes tools for previewing RTP (ready-to-print) files that

contain the raster data that represents pages as they will be printed. These are efficient

and useful tools for quality assurance and adjusting jobs that have been RIPed, but

not printed.

In the Job Preview & Editor window, you can magnify a job to view and check an RTP

file for trapping, overprinting, and other features. The RIPed RTP file can be edited: jobs

can be merged and pages replaced and/or deleted without any need to re-RIP the

entire job.

The Profile Manager tool is for managing ICC profiles. With this tool, you can import

and delete source and destination ICC profiles and apply various profiles to accurately

control the color gamut of the printer’s output. Note that when the ICC output profile of

a RIPed file is changed, the file must be RIPed again.

In this demonstration, you will import an ICC profile, and use the functions in the Job

Preview & Editor window, including the Show Color Values, to preview the RTP file and

to see how a different ICC profile affects the colors of the file.

Import the 1. Flower_RGB.pdf to the ProcessStore virtual printer.

On the toolbar, click the 2. Resource Center button .

In the 3. Resource list, select Profile Manager > Source Profile> Import button .

In the 4. Import Source ICC Profile window, click the Browse button .

Navigate to 5. D:\Shared\Demo, select the ISOcoated_v2.icc profile, and click Select.

In the6. Import Source ICC Profile window, click Import.

The ISOcoated_v2 profile appears in the Source Profile list.

To close the Resource Center dialog box, click 7. Close.

Stop the 8. Process Queue, and in the Storage area, double-click the file Flower_RGB.pdf.

Click the 9. Color tab, and make sure the Color Mode is CMYK.

Click the 10. Color Flow parameter, and in the CMYK Source Profile list, select ISOcoated_v2.

Click 11. Submit.

Release the 12. Process Queue, and in the Storage area, right-click the Flower RTP job,

and select Job Preview & Editor.

The modified job is displayed in the Job Preview & Editor window.

Click the 13. Show Color Values button , and then click any part of the image to check

the CMYK values. Write down the values.

Close the 14. Job Preview & Editor window.

In the Storage area, right-click the 15. Flower job that you used in the Previewing a PDF File procedure,

and select Job Preview & Editor.

Click the 16. Eye Dropper button, and then click the same area that you clicked in step 13.

Write down the values.

Compare the CMYK values that you wrote down for each job.17.

When you finish, close the jobs, release the 18. Print Queue, submit the modified,

not printed Flower_RGB.pdf job for printing, and compare the printed jobs.


Implementing a Step-and-Repeat Imposition Method Improve Productivity With a Virtual Printer

Complex imposition layouts are fast and efficient to create using the CX Print Server

imposition tools. Operators can choose from a series of default layouts, or easily define

the imposition layouts. Any job can be imposed on the CX Print Server—PostScript or

PDF, static or variable data—for significant labor savings. The imposition layout can be

previewed and verified immediately on the screen.

Imposition can take place before or after RIPing, but there is greater flexibility in Pre-RIP

imposition. After the RIP, pages can be replaced, crop marks added, margins changed,

and many other adjustments can be made. For example, the operator can test for creep

compensation and adjust it much faster than if the file had to be reRIPed.

The task of imposing a job is simple with the CX Print Server’s robust functionality.

Imposition is part of the standard job parameter set, and does not require a

separate application.

In this demonstration, you will create a new Virtual Printer, and use step-and-repeat

imposition method to lay out business cards on a press sheet. Step-and-repeat

imposition method is the most efficient method for filling a press sheet with as many

copies as possible.

Creating a Step-and-Repeat Virtual PrinterOn the toolbar, click the 1. Resource Center button and in the Resource list, make sure that Virtual Printers is selected.

To create a new virtual printer, click the 2. New button .

In the 3. Add Virtual Printer dialog box, in the Name box, type Business Cards.

Check 4. Override PPD parameters.

In the 5. Based On list, make sure that the ProcessPrint virtual printer is selected, and click Edit.

In the 6. Number of Copies Box, type 40 (the number of sheets to be printed).

Select the 7. Paper Stock parameter, and select Paper Size Tabloid or A3.


In the 9. Method list, select Step & Repeat.

Select the 10. Size parameter and set the following options:

Trim size: Custom•

H: 1.96 in or 50 mm and W: 3.54 in or 90 mm•

Select the 11. Templates parameter and set the following options:

To preview the imposed job, double-click your job in the 2. Print Queue, click the Imposition tab,

and then click the Preview button .

Close the 3. Preview window and click Save.

In the 4. Print Queue, click the Start button . The job resumes printing.


Easily Place Multiple Booklets on One Sheet

Saddle stitching is a method of binding sheets into a booklet. This method creates a

brochure or magazine with a row of stitches or staples along the spine. The CX Print

Server’s saddle-stitch imposition method sets up and prints pages so they are properly

oriented and organized for saddle-stitching finishing equipment.

In this demonstration, you will use the Imposition and Preview tools to take a PDF

file through the process of imposition, printing and binding. The outcome will be two

copies of a saddle-stitched booklet of coupons. To finish the job, an inline saddle-

binding finisher must be installed.

Adjust Tone Curves Without Reprocessing

One of the advantages of digital printing is that proofs can be generated at virtually no

cost—they are simply an on-screen preview, or a single copy that is printed just before

the full run. However, with some systems, if the proof reveals a need for an adjustment,

the job must be delayed while the image is edited and reRIPed.

With the CX Print Server, images can be adjusted and improved after RIPing, but before

printing. Its ready-to-print (RTP) files can be corrected in gradation, brightness and

contrast after the file has been RIPed and proofed, without the need to reRIP the job.

This accelerates the workflow while allowing great flexibility in last-minute changes.

The on-screen preview tool is the key to this flexibility. This allows the operator to view

the effects of the adjustments before printing another proof.

In this demonstration, you will make tone curve adjustments. You will be able to

compare the differences between “before” and “after” prints.

Press advanced toner. Simply specify the desired output quality and the CX Print

Server sets the optimal parameters.

With its high quality text and line art feature, the CX Print Server can render

PostScript overprint commands.

Obtain Consistent Spot Colors

The spot colors feature of the CX Print Server enables correct color matching. You

can define RGB values or CMYK values as spot colors with fixed CMYK target values.

This is extremely valuable for processing RGB-format logos and other files provided by

clients, so they are accurately and consistently printed in the four-color CMYK process.

You define specific RGB or CMYK combinations as spot colors, and then select

predefined spot colors as CMYK targeted values. For example, you can define an RGB

color combination as a four-color PANTONE value.

When you define a specific color to be an RGB or CMYK spot color, and enter a fixed

CMYK target for it, the CX Print Server treats it as a spot color and protects it from any

color-curve or similar adjustments that affect the rest of the file.

In this demonstration you will learn how to work with the Spot Color Editor to protect

CMYK and RGB colors.

Consistent Color Matching Increases Customer Satisfaction

A spot color is a specially mixed ink that enables you to reproduce colors that are

difficult to reproduce with CMYK inks. When a spot color is converted to CMYK for

digital printing, the printout doesn’t always simulate the desired spot color. The spot

color variations feature enables you to easily edit a spot color by selecting a more

appropriate shade. The spot color variations feature provides 37 variations, with slightly

different CMYK values.

The edited spot color is saved in a custom dictionary. When the CX Print Server

identifies a spot color in a job, it first looks for the name of the spot color in the custom

dictionary and uses the associated CMYK values. If the spot color is not found, it looks

in the PANTONE color and HKS color dictionaries. If the spot color is not found in

either dictionary, the CX Print Server uses the CMYK values embedded in the

original file.

In this demonstration, you will print a job that contains a spot color. Then you will

select a spot color variation that provides a more accurate reproduction of the spot

color and reprint the job with the new spot color CMYK values.

Note: The spot color variations feature is available only in the Advanced Color

Tools Package.

The spot color with the new values is added to the Custom Dictionary.

Controlling High-Profit VDP Jobs

Print providers are finding that VDP applications such as Direct Mail and personalized

marketing are effective tools for increasing their print volume, improving profit margins,

and providing a strong business differentiator. The CX Print Server and the Xerox Press

give printers the ability to compete for high-value VDP jobs, and produce them easily

and efficiently with high throughput.

The VDP capabilities of the CX Print Server are essential for a high-productivity VDP

workflow. The Creo Color Server includes unique VDP-focused features such as its

ability to detect, and cache repeating elements. Variable jobs typically include many

repeating elements—which the CX Print Server RIPs once, and caches as a “shared

element” within the job. The processing speed increase is significant.

In this demonstration, you will process and print a variable PDF file using the Optimized

PDF and Gallop features. Note that the CX Print Server drives the printer at its rated

output speed, even on a VDP job.

Note: The Advanced Productivity Package enables you to cache global elements and

reuse them within jobs.

Improve Productivity With Useful Workflows

The cut-and-stack imposition method is used to print, cut, and stack pages while

preserving a certain order. When the cut stacks are piled one on top of the other, the

entire job ends up in the desired order. The cut-and-stack method is useful primarily for

high-volume variable data printing jobs.

A VDP job is a collection of elements. An element scan can be text, graphics, photos or

page backgrounds. The CX Print Server processes each variable element once, when it

is first encountered, and then saved in memory cache for later use. This occurs even if it

appears on several pages or if it will be printed on many different booklets.

Variable Print Specification (VPS) format is the Creo Color Server’s file format for

leading efficient VDP jobs. VPS is supported by many VDP design programs including

the Darwin VI Authoring Tool. The server job can use APR to print high-resolution

images. Element-based processing saves valuable time, since each image is processed

only once.

In this demonstration, you will use the cut-and-stack imposition method to print a

variable data printing (VDP) job in VPS format.

application by double-clicking on the CreoColorServerJobTicket.exe file.

The Creo Color Server Job Ticket software is installed and run.

In the 6. Trim Size list, select 8.5x11 or A4.

Click 7. Save.

Enter a name for the job ticket and click 8. Save.

The job ticket is saved in the path defined in the Preferences window.

The default path is: C:\Program Files\Color_Server_Client_Tools\

Creo_Color_Server_JT\V1_0\JT files\<server name>.

Click 9. Submit.

In the 10. Name box, type the name of your print job. The job will appear under this name on the Creo Color Server.

To include the file, click 11. Browse and then navigate to the Business_Card.pdf file.

Click 12. Open.

Click 13. Submit.

The 14. Business_Card.pdf file is sent to the Creo Color Server and is printed

according to the settings defined in the job ticket.
