12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers against the powers against the world forces of this darkness against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places 13Therefore take up the full armor of God so that you will be able to resist in the evil day and having done everything to stand firm Ephesians 6 12+13

33 ldquoThese things I have spoken to you so

that in Me you may have peace In the world

you have tribulation but take courage I have

overcome the world John 16 3323 And He was saying to them all ldquoIf anyone wishes to come after Me he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me Luke 923

24 ldquoFor whoever wishes to save his

life will lose it but whoever loses his

life for My sake he is the one who will

save it Luke 924

16 But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends and they will put some of you to death 17 and you will be hated by all because of My name 18 Yet not a hair of your head will perish 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives Luke 2116-19

10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings being conformed to His death 11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead Philippians 310+11

10 Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down he who accuses them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony and they did not love their life even when faced with deathRevelation 1210+11

Here lies the significanceof Revelation 1210

The force of the phrase ldquoand they overcame himrdquo declares that ldquotheyrdquo (the ldquobrethrenrdquo ) overcame ldquohimrdquo (their accuser Satan) These lsquobrethrenrsquo have a spiritual status that allows them to conquer Satan because of the ldquoblood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony and they did not love their life even when faced with deathrdquo

That spiritual status looks suspiciouslybody-of-christ christian

to me

These lsquobrethrenrsquo (can they be Christians) represent the margin of victory in Godrsquos war against the Evil One Had they failed to stand firm with their testimony God would have failed (See Luciferrsquos challenges to God viv-a-vis Job in the OT Satan makes these same challenges regarding the Tribulationrsquos brethren loses his gamble and thereby loses the war)

The brethren applied Christrsquos Olivet teaching even to the death and left Satan with no valid accusation against themTo Satan these brethren looked like weak links in Godrsquos plan of redemption break them and God cannot keep His word to redeem them The moment when one of Godrsquos promises fail Satan wins all These brethren do not fail their God because their God does not fail them The Blood of the Lamb covers them The full armor of God protects them and these brethren stand firm in the face of Hell itself

They overcame him

No finer epitaph no more glorious eulogy no higher commendation ever describes another group of Christians anywhere

Our modern American sense of entitlement to comfort and safety makes the historical christian experience of persecution practically unthinkable

Yet tribulation and persecution have historically forged the deepening faith of christians

To what perpetual bed of ease dare we American Christians feel ourselves so entitled
