SURREY HEATH SINGERS SURREY HEATH SINGERS SURREY HEATH SINGERS SURREY HEATH SINGERS is the performing name of Surrey Heath Choral Society.... A friendly, non-auditioned, mixed voice choir of 75 singers under the baton of our dynamic musical director, Andrew Phillips, we present three or four concerts each year. The high-light of the previous year was the glittering Opera Gala, “Murder, Mayhem and Mystery” which included some of the most famous arias and choruses from the great operas – the Humming Chorus from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Verdi’s Nabucco and the Triumphal Scene from Verdi’s Aida to mention but a few. Choir for Hire Choir for Hire Choir for Hire Choir for Hire – The whole choir and “Singet!” (the “A Cappella” group) are available to sing at private functions throughout the year. At least three months’ notice is required when booking, to allow time to make the necessary arrangements and rehearse. During the past year smaller groups have sung at weddings, in hospitals and at civic functions and we look forward again to leading the singing in Frimley Lodge Park for the Candlelit Carols in the Park on Friday 11th December and for the Christmas Extravaganza on Sun-day 13th December. 1111

Zero Harmony (Siemens plc choir)Zero Harmony (Siemens plc choir)Zero Harmony (Siemens plc choir)Zero Harmony (Siemens plc choir) ‘Zero Harmony’ is the in-house choir for Siemens’ Frimley Unit; the name is a pun on Zero Harm, the guiding principle in Health and Safety behind all Siemens activities. The choir is building towards doing outreach work in the local community as one of its goals. Siemens has another choir in Manchester, so we may soon be supporting our local choir in internal competition! Members of ‘Zero Harmony’ are automatically members of Surrey Heath Singers, and several of them who live locally have sung in our concerts and our commu-nity events.

Surrey Heath SingersSurrey Heath SingersSurrey Heath SingersSurrey Heath Singers Singet!Singet!Singet!Singet! – Our "a cappella" group will be performing regularly in 2015-16, including over the Christmas period. This month Singet! has sung for a stroke club in Farnborough. Business SupportBusiness SupportBusiness SupportBusiness Support - We have been in discussion with local businesses and are very grateful for the expressions of support we have received. In particular, Siemens plc en-gaged us to create an in-house choir at their Frimley headquarters, which has led us to appoint an assistant musical director, Rae Evans. We wish the new choir, “Zero Har-mony” every success and are delighted that they are joining us tonight. Civic, charity and community events Civic, charity and community events Civic, charity and community events Civic, charity and community events - The choir has sung at open-air Fun Days, com-munity carol services, civic functions, in the streets, in care homes, in hospitals, and even in Camberley Theatre with the Pantomime cast. Surrey Heath Singers is once again the partner of the Borough’s Greenspace team in staging Surrey Heath’s Candlelit Carols on Friday, 11th December 2015, in Frimley Lodge Park; and on the following Sunday, 13th December, between 10 and 4 is providing the carols for the Xmas Extravaganza at Pista-chios café in Frimley Lodge Park, which will raise money for the Mayor’s charity and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust. We are looking for more invitations to sing in workplaces.

ANDREW PHILLIPS ANDREW PHILLIPS ANDREW PHILLIPS ANDREW PHILLIPS ---- ConductorConductorConductorConductor

Andrew read Music at the University of Birmingham and studied singing at the Royal Col-lege of Music under the late Frederick Sharp. He has travelled widely, singing as a soloist with choral societies and music clubs throughout the United Kingdom as well as working with many of the professional choirs in London. His international work has taken him to most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East.

Performances over the last thirty years have ranged across an extensive repertoire, cov-ering most of the popular oratorio field from Monteverdi to Britten as well as more chal-lenging contemporary work. Equally at home with Baroque classics and the larger scale 19th century works of Verdi and Rossini, his work is always musically informed.

As a conductor he worked for many years with the Hampshire-based chamber choir Voci Cantanti and The Thames Singers of London, presenting each year a full season of con-certs in venues throughout the country. He built an enviable reputation in the recording studio, collaborating with major companies as conductor and producer on film scores and CD projects, work which he continues as a busy freelance record producer. He has been working successfully with Brockham Choral Society since 2007 and in 2010 was ap-pointed Musical Director of Surrey Heath Choral Society (now performing as Surrey Heath Singers).

A former member of Winchester Cathedral Choir and, contrastingly, the cabaret quintet, The Demon Barbers, he combines his work as a performer with that of coaching and teaching and was for twenty-five years the singing tutor at Wellington College. He is a Lay Clerk at Guildford Cathedral.

He is the Director of Chameleon Arts Management, a music agency which represents a wide variety of musicians for concert promotion and also provides a choral and orchestral booking service.

GEOFFREY TUSON GEOFFREY TUSON GEOFFREY TUSON GEOFFREY TUSON ---- AccompanistAccompanistAccompanistAccompanist

The members of Surrey Heath Singers are delighted to have Geoffrey Tuson as their resi-dent accompanist. Geoffrey began learning the organ at the age of 14 with John Belcher. He spent a total of six years from 2004-2010 studying at the Royal College of Music in London, with Marga-ret Phillips during his undergraduate degree, and then subsequently with David Graham and Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin whilst completing his postgraduate studies. He was awarded the Harold Darke prize for excellence in organ performance on completion of his undergraduate degree. Studying at the RCM also afforded him opportunities to play famous instruments in France, Holland, North and East Germany as well as participating in master-classes with internationally-renowned organists such as Dame Gillian Weir and Thomas Trotter. In 2006 he won the Kent County Organists' Association's inaugural festival in Maidstone earning a recital in Canterbury Cathedral, which took place in April 2007. He has given recitals at many venues including St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Christ-church Priory and Brentwood Cathedral. He attained his Associateship Diploma from the Royal College of Organists and gave a recital in the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester in 2008. Geoffrey held the post of Organist and Choirmaster at St. Andrew's Church, Frimley Green in Surrey from 2004 until 2009 when he took up the position of Organist and Choir-master at The Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, Aldershot. He is also a peripatetic piano and organ teacher at Salesian College in Farnborough, Hampshire, and at Edge-borough in Frensham, Surrey, and, in addition, college / school accompanist at both. Geoffrey has been the regular rehearsal accompanist for the Surrey Heath Choral Society since January 2009. His performances in Surrey Heath Singers concerts regularly win acclaim from appreciative audiences.

ABOUT OUR CAROLSABOUT OUR CAROLSABOUT OUR CAROLSABOUT OUR CAROLS

Like many choirs, Surrey Heath Singers uses the Oxford University Press “100 Carols for Choirs” as its main source of Christmas music. This is edited by David Willcocks and John Rutter, and they also arranged many of the carols. Previously we owed our carols to the likes of Ralph Vaughan Williams for rescuing traditional carols, and also to 19th cen-tury Americans for some of our favourite “English” carols. Sir David Willcocks, who died on 17th September 2015 aged 95, was Director of Music at King’s College Cambridge from 1957 - 1974. John Rutter was Director of Music at Clare College Cambridge from 1975 – 1979, and in 1981 founded the Cambridge Singers. He is the most successful choral composer of modern times, and regularly conducts and gives workshops in Surrey. The Cambridge renaissance in choral music, of which they are a part, has been a major driver in the improvement of standards in choirs all over the country and across the world, with choirs from places as far apart as Japan, Indonesia, France, Spain and the United States all striving to mirror the success of English choirs.

SIR DAVID WILLCOCKSSIR DAVID WILLCOCKSSIR DAVID WILLCOCKSSIR DAVID WILLCOCKS

This year our Christmas concert is tinged with sadness, as it will be for other choirs and audiences the length and breadth of this country, and indeed around the world, because of the passing of Sir David Willcocks who died on 17th September at the age of 95. In 1961, he persuaded Oxford University Press to start publishing a series called Carols for Choirs. Yet again, as at every one of our Christmas concerts for many years, the choir will be singing carols from this series, ‘100 Carols for Choirs’. Many of the carols are in arrangements by Willcocks himself and they have become an invaluable resource for choral societies and church choirs at Christmas. At this concert 9 of the 22 carols are sung in arrangements by him, together with the soar-ing descants he composed for Once in Royal David’s City and Hark the Herald. His many great achievements included cathedral organist, composer, conductor of the Bach Choir, director of the Royal College of Music, and most famously director of music at King’s College Cambridge. But perhaps for many of us he will be most warmly remem-bered through the music we will be performing tonight.

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him

Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.

Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed:

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

AllAllAllAll

He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable,

And his cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly,

Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey,

Love, and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he.

Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by,

We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high;

When like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

AllAllAllAll O morning stars, together

Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King,

And peace to men on earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above,

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in,

JOHN RUTTERJOHN RUTTERJOHN RUTTERJOHN RUTTER John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and received his first musical education as a chorister at Highgate School. He went on to study music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he wrote his first published compositions and conducted his first recording while still a student. His compositional career has embraced both large- and small-scale choral works, orchestral and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children’s operas, music for television, and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass En-semble and the King’s Singers. His larger choral works, Gloria (1974), Requiem (1985), Magnificat (1990), Psalm-fest (1993) and Mass of the Children (2003), have been performed many times in Britain, North America and a growing number of other countries. He co-edited four volumes in the Carols for Choirs series with Sir David Willcocks, and, more recently, has edited the first two volumes in the new Oxford Choral Classics series, Opera Choruses (1995) and European Sacred Music (1996). From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, whose choir he di-rected in a number of broadcasts and recordings. After giving up the Clare post to allow more time for composition, he formed the Cambridge Singers as a profes-sional chamber choir primarily dedicated to recording, and he now divides his time between composition and conducting. He has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Africa, North and Central America and Australasia. In 1980 he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music. He was honoured in the 2007 Queen’s New Year Honours List, being awarded a CBE for services to music. John Rutter’s music is published by Oxford University Press, Hinshaw Music Inc. and Collegium Music Publications.
