There is not one speci�c answer to this question. Your experience at the Career Fair should be personally tailored for you. What are you looking for? The Career Fair is not solely a one stop shop for marketing majors, biology majors, or psychology majors. It is so much more! The Career Fair is available to help those searching for internships or full time jobs. Regardless of what it is you are searching for, there are certain DOs and DON’Ts to follow to achieve the most success out of your experience!

Follow Dress Code Arrive Prepared Know Your Audience Follow Up

• Dress for success! This means:Ladies: Pants suits, blazers, blouses and pencil skirts.Men: Suits and ties, dark socks and dress shoes.• You want to LOOK YOUR BEST while you are exemplifying your best work qualities!

• No matter what your goals are, you will want to prepare for the fair.• Arrive with multiple copies of your résumé.

• Do your research! Visit the organization’s website. Know who they are and what they do!

• Come with questions to ask potential future employers about their company!

• Visit the employers in order of your interests, possibly visiting one as a practice introduction �rst. • Approach employers with con�dence. Have a �rm handshake and a solid elevator speech ready. • Ask questions about the company, the hiring process, and characteristics about employees themselves!

• Although the fair may be over, your job and the recruiter’s job are not! • Follow up with the representatives by adding them on LinkedIn. Networking yourself will continue to demonstrate your professionalism!• Mind your manners! Send the employers you spoke to a thank you note or email.

Employers are present at the Cintas Center to help you develop your career and career goals! They accept résumés, meet candidates, and at the end of the day see the resilient qualities that all Xavier students possess! Xavier’s Career Fair is a great opportunity to explore a variety of careers with many di�erent companies. In addition to that, you are able to network with recruiters across a multitude of organizations, ask lots of questions, and have the chance to make a lasting impression with your targeted companies. So – how do you make that lasting impression? How do you set yourself apart from other students when speaking with employers? What do recruiters want to hear? These are all great questions to consider when preparing for a career fair.

When approaching an employer at a Career Fair, it is essential to not only share the hard skills you possess, but your soft skills as well. Soft skills compliment hard skills which are the occupational requirements of a job. Think about it. Would you want to work with an indi-vidual who lacked interpersonal relationship building skills? Or who had a lack of work ethic? Most likely not. Recruiters think the exact same way. In identifying top talent, an employer �rst looks at whether or not the student possesses the hard skills. Does this student have the knowl-edge and experience to perform the job? Next, we consider soft skills – does the student possess the personal qualities needed to be successful in our career? Companies know that research suggests and experience shows that soft skills can be as strong an indicator of job performance as hard skills.

1. Strong work ethic – Are you motivated and dedicated to getting the job done? Will you be conscientious and do your best work?2. Positive attitude – Are you optimistic and upbeat? Do you take initiative and act in a leadership role when appropriate?7. Self-con�dent – Do you truly believe you can do this job? Can you inspire con�dence in others? 8. Ability to accept and learn from criticism – Can you handle criticism? Are you coachable and open to growing professionally?9. Flexible/adaptable – Are you able to adapt to new challenges and situations? Can you embrace change?10. Working well under pressure – Are you able to handle stress that comes with deadlines? 11. Goal-oriented/self- starter – Are you motivated by reaching goals? Are you capable of setting your own tasks and following through on them?

Do you possess these soft skills? Demonstrate you have these skills in your resume, your elevator pitch and as part of your interviews. For example, in an interview, demonstrate you possess strong work ethic by talking about how you maintained a high GPA, while also completing an internship and attending classes full-time. Or, describe how you manage your time well by explaining how you successfully managed your schoolwork, a part-time job and your responsibilities as President of a student organization. Within your resume, show you’re goal-oriented by including brief bullet points describing how you met your goals in your sales internship. Keep in mind that by showcasing your soft skills, you will demonstrate to employers that you not only have the hard skills to be successful but you have what it takes to be a thriving, well rounded indi-vidual in their career!
