XVII Applied Economics Meeting Gran Canaria, June 5-6, 2014
- 2 -
Welcome
In 2014 the XVII Applied Economics Meeting will be held in Gran Canaria next June 5 and 6.
This edition is organized by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) who is also
celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Applied Economics Meetings, promoted by the Asociación
Libre de Economía (ALdE) and the Revista de Economía Aplicada (REA), are conceived as a
channel to disseminate and discuss research works that deepen the knowledge of reality
through the use of applied economic analysis.
This year’s first plenary lecture will be given by Prof. Jeffrey E. Harris (Massachusetts Institute
of Technology), about the recent developments in the US national health system and the
lessons that economists may learnt from it, under the title Obamacare: from the eye of the
storm. In the second plenary lecture Prof. Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (London School of
Economics) will dissert about infrastructure investment and politics and the title of his
conference is Government quality and the economic returns of transport infrastructure
investment in European regions.
As in previous editions, the 2014 ALdE Prize for Young Researchers will be awarded during the
meeting to the best paper whose authors are under 35 years old. For all the other papers the
Scientific Committee is still negotiating their publication as proceedings or as a special issue on
a relevant journal.
In preparing the parallel sessions, the Scientific Committee had the opportunity to select
among more than 200 papers submitted, covering all areas of applied economics.
Unfortunately, space limitations meant that a number of relevant papers could not make it
finally onto the program.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of our patrons and sponsors. Special thanks are due to
the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria through its Department of Quantitative Methods
in Economics and Management, its Department of Applied Economics and the Faculty of
Economics, Management and Tourism. The meeting has also been supported by the Cabildo de
Gran Canaria, the Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Ayuntamiento de San
Bartolomé de Tirajana. We extend our gratitude to our main private sponsors, Hospital
Perpetuo Socorro, Bimbo Gran Canaria and Tirma, and to all the people that have helped us
behind scenes.
On my behalf and the remaining members of the Scientific and Organizing Committees, we
sincerely hope that you will spend an intellectually challenging and fruitful time with us. Enjoy
the meeting and enjoy Gran Canaria.
With my best wishes,
Beatriz González López-Valcárcel Head of the Organizing Committee
