Innovation beats recession

Nothing is more constant than change. This statement will be valid for a

long time, and will be a reminder to us if our business has been affected

by the circumstances surrounding financial markets around the world.

Certainly the need for action exists to adjust to these new conditions.

We have done this, and approach the future with optimism.

What has not changed is the field of innovation at LÜTZE. We see innovati-

on as being long term and as not to be disrupted by short term changes in

the marketplace. Thanks to the close cooperation with our clients we have

been able to present many new products and solutions in the past years.

Some of these innovations can be found here, in this edition of the

LÜTZE REPORT.

I hope that these topics are of interest to you.

Nuremberg has a new jewel: The RUBIN The name stands for “Realization of an automa-tic subway in Nuremberg”, which is a train with-out conductor. The mixed operation of con-ductor-free and conductor controlled trains onthe same section is unique in the world. The automatic operation on Route U3 makes itpossible to schedule the trains as needed. Waittimes are reduced and more passengers can betransported. The concept is implemented by theCity of Nuremberg, VAG Verkehrs-Aktienge-sellschaft Nürnberg and Siemens.

Permanent data flow for traffic flow A variety of computers in the vehicle, along theroute, at the railway control center and at thecentral service management office permanently

exchange data. The trains and train stationsare continuously monitored. This keeps thecontrol center informed about all events wit-hout interruption and the control center cantake immediate action in the event anythingrequires attention. The control and monitoring of the automaticoperation is entrusted to state-of-the-art tech-nology. This is where the LÜTZE DIOS-WITCH IP67 comes into play for use in rail-way vehicles: The data that is transmitted viawireless LAN is distributed throughout thevehicle using the Ethernet switch and datathat is dependent upon the position is forwar-ded to the passenger information system. Thevideo data of the passenger TVs is also trans-mitted via DIOSWITCH.

Steering toward the future with DIOSWITCH IP67 The railcar control unit sends the data thatwas collected using the DIOSWITCH intothe opposite direction to the maintenancecomputer at the control center. This datamay consist of images of analog and digitalcameras for passenger monitoring, valuesof automated passenger counts and, finally, the transmission of the mobile radio andemergency passenger emergency intercomto the control center. The conversion ofRoute U2 is planned for the next phase. Anadditional 14 RUBIN railcars are planned inaddition to the already delivered 32 trains tosteer toward the future.

Bamatec AG is a subsi-diary of BaumannSprings, a companyfounded in 1886, andwhich has operated as afamily-run enterprisefrom that date. From 1953, Bamatec AG,with a workforce ofaround 65 employees, hasbuilt machines for manu-facturing compressionsprings in all shapes andsizes. Wires of 0.1 mm to4.8 mm can be producedin spring sizes of 1 mm to90 mm. An almost infini-

te range of compression springs can be manu-factured using the fully CNC controlled ma-chines.In addition to winding machines, Bamatecalso manufactures grinders, auxiliary equip-

ment (measurement systems, win-ches) as well as specialised solutionssuch as palette systems or completeproduction lines for your customers.

Bamatec AG and LÜTZE AG have en-joyed an excellent co-operative relati-onship over many years. Bamatec hassuccessfully used the LSC wiring sys-tem with fully installed units. This applies to both new machines and

the refurbishment of old equipment.

“The modern wiring system from LÜTZEconvinced me in every respect.” I have suc-cessfully used this system for a number of ye-ars and will continue to do so in the future,”reports Marco Hold, Head of Electrical Engi-neering at Bamatec.

The following arguments influenced his deci-sion to opt for the Lütze system:• Maximum packing density, i.e. saving space in the on-machine cases

• Development of the most effective use of control panels.

• Reduced weight of the fully-equipped system

• Improved heat dissipation

• Excellent on-site service from regional LÜTZE AG branches

Marco Hold: “As the head of electrical instal-lation, I am delighted that all the employeesin production, maintenance and service com-pletely accept, and are happy to work with, the LÜTZE wiring system.I am fully satisfied with both the delivery andadvice service and the flexibility provided byLÜTZE. A company that I can recommendwith a clear conscience.”

ETA Schaltschrankbau in Leonberg byStuttgart is a small medium sized company. The company has used LÜTZE harnessessince mid 2006.

Control cabinets for ventilation technology, switch panels and controls for busses andtrains and also for concrete and mortar ma-chines are manufactured by customer order.

In the latter, ETA engineers count on harnes-ses that were developed in close cooperati-on with the LÜTZE manufacturing depart-ment. The demanding customers of the

company, such as Putzmeister in Aichtal, who is known worldwide, expect extreme-ly high quality products and on-time deli-veries.

ETA can guarantee this because of theLÜTZE harnesses. For ETA Manager Wer-ner Deininger, LÜTZE will be the firstcontact for future harness projects as well.

As an innovative company,ROBOT-TECHNOLOGY

GmbH is extremely wellversed in robot suppor-ted automation. Highdemands are placedon the requiredpower monitoringsystems, which iswhy the LOCC Boxby LÜTZE is used.

The company sup-plies automationand laser cuttingsystems for the plas-tic and metal indus-tries, mainly to cus-tomers from the au-

tomotive industry. Inaddition to the manu-

facturers themselves,the customer base also

includes system suppliers.

The design of automationsystems at ROBOT-TECH-

NOLOGY is processed at twomodern and well equipped assembly

halls in Kleinostheim. In order to be able torespond quickly during the in-house commis-sioning, all important processing machines areready for operation at the mechanical producti-on section. Acomplete laser cutting chamber is

equipped with the Robocut A 300 laser robotto perform customer testing, e.g. quality andinterval testing.

Dependable protection of 24V DC circuits

ROBOT-TECHNOLOGY places the highestdemands possible on the development of spe-cial solutions with regard to functionality andquality of the systems to be supplied. Oneexample is the high demand for system availa-bility, which makes protecting 24V load cir-cuits the central topic of system planning moreand more. Conventional protection using fusesespecially lacked selectivity. Instead of a com-pletely failed power supply, only the affectedload circuit should be shut off safely and asquickly as possible in the event of a mal-function.

Remaining flexible in the event of a malfunction

For this reason, ROBOT-TECHNOLOGYdecided to use the LOCC Box power moni-toring system by LÜTZE. This systemsafely disconnects the malfunctioning pathof the circuit in the event of an overloadsuch as a short circuit. This ensures that ot-her unaffected parts of the system remainavailable. In the event of a shut-off due tooverload current or short circuit, a red LEDsignals the error. Another advantage of theLOCC Box system is the variable adjustabi-lity not only in the rated current range from1A to 10A with locking positions but alsothe tripping characteristic. The device pro-tection can thereby be changed and adjustedwithout a problem and as often as needed. It's slim design also speaks for the electro-nic power monitoring system: Only 8.2 mmwidth is required for each channel.

ROBOT-TECHNOLOGY can thereby offer asafe and practical solution to its customers tominimize downtimes and respond quickly andflexibly in the event of an error.

CRENEAU INDUSTRIEL, a companywith its registered office in Annecy le Vieuxin the Département Haute-Savoie, designsand manufactures enormous 3, 4 and 5-axis machining centres for the machiningof soft materials (aluminium, composites, plastics, ...) that are used in the manufactu-re of parts for important branches of in-dustry, such as aviation, and in the auto-motive industry, processing industry etc.

This dynamic company has made a name foritself in the aviation industry by combiningtradition with state-of-the-art technology. For30 years the company has been manufactu-ring machines that are specially suited fortheir specific target market segment and pro-vide a high degree of flexibility in production.

We have been able to present ourselves andour innovations from the LÜTZE product

range to their technical department, which isconstantly on the lookout for innovative solu-tions.Our selective load monitoring system in DC24 V circuits met with special interest. Cré-neau Industriel has already been using a simi-lar system from the competition. In theirview, though, our LÜTZE automatic circuitbreaker was more powerful. After the systemhad been in use for a year we were able to le-arn of the reasons for their decision at our re-cent meeting:• The greater flexibility of the circuit breaker: on the one hand due to the selective fuse protection of various circuits from 1 to 10 Ain steps of 1 A, on the other hand due to the setting facility for the breaking times (quick, semi time lag and time lag) and finally due to the possibility of being able to program a specific curve.

• The small space requirement with an over

all width of 8.1 mm• Due to the modular technique of its single channel mode it is suitable for all machine configurations.

• Communication with the automatic circuit breaker: error output and reset input.

Our collaboration with the company CRE-NEAU INDUSTRIEL was very pleasant onboth the technical and commercial level. Itwas this collaboration that has made it possi-ble for the control boxes to now be equippedwith the LÜTZE LOCC Box System, whichprovides for better protection and better mo-nitoring of the electrical circuits. Créneau In-dustriel is also collaborating with us on otherproducts, e.g. the cable protection systemCondufix. We are therefore able to offer who-le solution packages.

Those who build machines for the roughforest industry must be able to bring tothe end users experience and an exactknowledge of the application demands. Aspecial focus is on the selection of the cor-rect mechanical and electrical elements. At Konrad Forsttechnik, LÜTZE-SU-PERFLEX®-PLUS lines provide longevityand resistance to even the most adverseenvironmental conditions.

Konrad Forsttechnik in Preitenegg hasbeen developing and building forestry ma-chinery for 16 years. The customer list in-cludes large domestic and internationalforestry operations. Export sales accountfor approximately 60 percent. The compa-ny is especially proud of the developmentand market introduction of the new High-lander, which is a mobile harvester that issetting new benchmarks with regard to mo-bility and flexibility, especially when usedin the mountains.

“The highlander can handle uphill grades of100 percent”, explains Ing. Markus Konrad,“and in addition, it can not only move throughthe terrain by driving but also by treading. Weachieved this with a clever hydraulic driveconcept.” Konrad Forsttechnik is thereby thespecialist on the bluff, because “the new ma-chine makes the extremely dangerous work inthe forest a lot easier and safer.”

No wonder that all aggregates including theircontrol and supply lines in this application areexposed to extreme conditions. Especially theharvester head with its hydraulic valves is ex-tremely stressed. This is where Konrad Forst-technik counts on LÜTZE-SUPERFLEX®-PLUS lines. “Not only water, oil and dirtmust be taken into consideration, but alsosnow and ice”, says company founder JosefKonrad and explains: “The broad temperatu-re range from -40°C to +80°C impacts the li-nes in addition to the high UV radiation onhigh mountain ranges.“ That is not all: The

work is accompanied by permanent shocks, vibration and extreme dust due to processedtree trunks. LÜTZE-SUPERFLEX®-PLUSlines can even withstand the major grindingeffect of this dust due to their extraordinaryresistance to grinding and impact resistance.

Konrad takes service and support for the ma-chines, which is ensured domestically andalso in all export markets, especially seriously.Similarly, LÜTZE not only offers a compre-hensive line program for flexible applicationsthat meet all market demands with the rightline, consultation and service throughout theprocess to the packaging of the selected li-nes are self-evident for LÜTZE customers.

Highlander - stresses lines to the nth degreeKonrad Gnigler, LÜTZE Austria

HighlanderStatic Systems Group plc is an established specialist in the design, manu-facture, installation, project management and maintenance of communi-cation and fire detection systems for healthcare establishments, prisonsand commercial and public buildings.

One of their products is a nurse call system which consists of a handset connectedto a 'wall mounted control unit'. The handset allows patients to call for assistan-ce as and when required. Over the years, one of the major problems associatedwith the system was the 'abuse' the connection cable was exposed to, as bored pa-tients continually twisted and pulled the cable as they lay in their hospital beds, spending hours awaiting their recovery. This abuse meant that cables needed tobe replaced regularly.

The engineers at Static had an objective of finding a cable which could withstandthe rigours of hospital life and designed a test system to simulate the type of mo-vement that the cable was expected to endure.

Lutze were selected to work with Static Systems on the basis of their considera-ble experience in cables for movement applications. Working closely with the en-gineers at Static Systems, Lutze proposed different solutions involving outer ja-cket material, conductor insulation, conductor pitch and copper stranding con-struction.

After a number of prototyping stages, an optimum construction was determinedwhich met the criteria laid down by the customer. The ultimate solution was uni-que as the type of movement endured was completely different than conventio-nal movement, such as those encountered in drag chains in automation systems.

Static Systems planned to introduce the new cable in a redesigned hand set. Oneof the major features was that the patient handset incorporated antimicrobial addi-tives. Build up of bacteria on surfaces that are regularly touched presents a majorchallenge for healthcare professionals working in the acute hospital environment.Consequently, good hygiene is of paramount importance in the fight against thetransmission of harmful bacteria - particularly 'super bugs' such as MRSA.

Existing methods at the disposal of staff, such as increased surveillance andgreater focus on hygiene issues, have proved not to be enough, particularly as thenumber of bacteria resistant to antibiotics is set to rise. No one doubts the impor-tance of a well managed cleaning regime as the fundamental foundation in thefight against infection transmission, but no matter how effective the cleaning thesurface could be contaminated just after the cleaning has taken place. This micro-bial contamination could then multiply and be propagated around the ward untilthe next cleaning cycle is conducted. This is where antimicrobial surfaces, as usedin the Static handset, can play a vital supporting role. During the period betweencleaning cycles, the 'active' surface contributes to reducing the likelihood of patho-genic organisms multiplying and being transported around the care environment.

Static Systems wondered if the benefits of the antimicrobial compound could beextended to the cable as this would enable the complete handset assembly to beantimicrobial. Lutze investigated and were confident that the antimicrobial com-pound could be added at the correct dosage at the right stage in the productionprocess to achieve the required result. Further prototyping was undertaken andthe cable was submitted for testing by an independent authority. The tests proved that the cable was antimicrobial. The endresult is that Static Systems have a cable that meetstheir stringent mechanical demands and con-forms to the antimicrobial requirements thatare so important to healthcare professionals.

The success of this project was due tothe close co-operation between Lut-ze Limited and the customer, ensu-ring that final product would meettheir exacting standards.

Page 6: XXXXX TEXT NOCH WEISS EINFÄRBEN, · 2014-12-17 · Keep Cool! NFPA 79, 2007 Edition 10-11 IMPRINT published by LÜTZE INTERNATIONAL GmbH Bruckwiesenstraße 17-19, D-71384 Weinstadt

NFPA 79 is the electrical standard forIndustrial Machinery in the USA. Anumber of significant updates were im-plemented in the 2007 edition. TheNFPA 79 is a code published by the Na-tional Fire Protection Agency, the sameAgency that publishes the NationalElectric Code (a.k.a. NEC or NFPA 70)every three years.

The NFPA 79 has special provisions ad-dressing safe wiring practices for industri-al machinery such as machine tools. Chap-ter 12 of the NFPA79 addresses cables andcords for use with industrial machinery.

Article 12.2.7.3 enforces a significant changeas it specifically prohibits the use of AWM(Appliance Wiring Material) style cable “un-less it is part of a listed assembly”.

Validity of NFPA 79 in the USA

In most cases the AHJ (Authority HavingJurisdiction) decides whether or not theNFPA 79 applies. The state of Ohio alrea-dy has written the NFPA 2007 editionmandatory into its state law at the mo-ment. Six other states are investigating toimplement this new standard as well.

Difference between “Appliance Wiring Ma-terial - AWM” and other types of cables:

Appliance Wiring Material is regulated byUL and is generally a UL recognized typeof cable showing the recognized logo:

NFPA 79 requires UL listed types. These ca-bles carry a UL listed logo. UL listed cablehas been manufactured and tested per speci-fic UL standards.

Lutze offers listed types with MTW, TC-ER,PLTC and CM marks. Cables with these mar-kings are considered listed types and are per-mitted to be used in NFPA 79 compliant ap-plications.

Meaning of NFPA 79 for Control cablesPVC 600V control cable made per AWM-sty-le is commonly used as control cable in ma-chine tool applications. This type of cable isno longer permitted for installations requiringNFPA 79 compliance. A permissible alterna-tive for most control applications is cablewith MTW rating or flexible TC-ER cablesuch as Lutze A322 and A308 series.

Given the broad range of machine tool requi-rements, this new NFPA code requirementmay represent a challenge to satisfy specialapplication requirements with the limitedrange of UL listed cables. The need for com-pliance with NFPA79 is resulting in a limitedchoice of cable types. All AWM cables desi-gned for a special application now requirespecial inspection, exception and permissionto be used.

ResolutionStandard Power & Control applications re-quiring flexible cable for easy routing can befully satisfied with MTW style or flexible traycable-ER. Electronic cables can be coveredwith cables of types CM, CMG or PLTC.

Flexing applications may require specialcables.

Please contact your authorized LÜTZErepresentative for further information concer-ning LÜTZE cables compliant with NFPA 79requirements.
