What are Apprenticeships?

Work-based training programmes designedaround the needs of employers, leadingto nationally recognised qualifications.

WLCT work alongside schools and businesses to create apprenticeship vacancies for young peopleand funding is available to train apprentices.

You can use apprenticeships to train new and existingemployees who are moving into a new or changedjob role and need to learn new skills.

Apprenticeships are designed by the Sector SkillsCouncils, while the National Apprenticeship Service helps to fund the training. Businesses work withthe Sector Skills Councils to develop course content, so you can be confident that the training will be relevant for your industry.

As employees, apprentices earn a wage and workalongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day-release basis, apprentices receive training to work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

Benefits To You, The Employer – Cost effective recruitment of new staff – Up to date training and qualifications for staff – Multi-skilling of staff – Investing in talent – Increasing service delivery

Apprenticeship Qualification Structure & Levels All apprenticeships must include the following elements:

– A module on employee rights and responsibilities– A module on personal learning and thinking skills

Sometimes an apprenticeship framework may have an integrated qualification which combines competenceand technical knowledge elements in which eachelement is separately assessed.
