8Summer in the Museum of Contemporary Art,
an uncommon combination of music, contemporary art and film, returns after three extremely successful sea-sons. For the first time, this year’s programme includes artistic performances.Summertime in Zagreb has never been as fun and as eventful as in the last few years, and this summer those who wish or have to stay on the sizzling asphalt can ex-pect even more fun. PERFORMANCES8This year's novelties in the pro-
gramme are performances by Croatian artists. Every evening be-fore the concert, at several locations within the Museum of Contemporary Art, visitors will have the opportuni-
ty to see famous performers in action, all of them different thematically and conceptually. The first performance is by Braco Dimitrijević who will tell the audience some unknown anecdotes from his own life.
CONCERTS8Summer in the Museum of Con-
temporary Art is best known for its excellent concerts on the rooftop terrace. Every year thousands of peo-ple choose to spend Saturday evening here, enjoying great music and a bird’s eye view of the entire city. Punk fans will be delighted with Pankrti, fol-lowed by a performance by Jonathan, a rock band that claims "to be a band which is not for the crowds". Favour-ite local rapper Kandžija, accompa-nied by Gole žene band, is performing on June 26. Excellent concerts conti-une in the first half of July.

Mirogoj, the central cemetery in Zagreb, is located on the slopes
of Medvednica and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Howev-
er, Mirogoj is also a beautiful park and an outdoor art gallery. The arcades are the most beau-tiful part of the cemetery – the construction bega in 1879, only
three years after Mirogoj was opened, and they were complet-ed thirty eight years later. Miro-
goj is the resting place of many famous Croats and the complex also contains a number of valu-
able monuments made by promi-nent Croatian artists.

8The picturesque St. Mark's Church is
one of the oldest build-ings in Zagreb and one of its symbols, distinctive for its roof made of multicolor roof tiles. The church has existed since the 13th cen-tury, but it famous roof is much younger – it was in-stalled during its most re-cent reconstruction in the second half of the 19th
century. The roof features emblems of the Croatian regions of Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the Zagreb City em-blem on the right side. There are three altars in the interior, sculpted by Ivan Meštrovićm, and Kljaković's sacristy paint-ed from the floor to the ceiling. Organ concerts of-ten take place here.
As one of the best preserved mon-uments of old Zagreb, this is the only remaining gate of the former city defense system. It was built in the 13th century and given its present design in 1760. The pas-
sageway within the gate contains a chapel with a picture of St. Mary of the Stone Gate, the city guardian, which according to a legend sur-vived a major fire in 1731 without any damage.STONE GATE

8The history of the Art Pavilion is in a way the
history of the Croatian 20th century fine arts. This is one of the oldest exhibition areas in this part of Europe, spe-
cifically designed for major exhibitions. It is situated be-tween the Central Railway Station and Zrinjevac, in the very heart of Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe.

FUNICULAR
8The funicular pro-vides organized pub-
lic transport of passen-gers to the upper part of Zagreb. It connects the Downtown and the Old Town every working day and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 6.30am to 10pm and has to this day retained its original exterior design and struc-ture, as well as most of the technical characteris-tics given to it by its build-ers in 1890 when it was opened. It leaves every ten minutes and the price of one ride is HRK 4. Com-pared to other cable cars intended for public trans-port, its track of only 66 meters makes it the short-est one in the world.
Zagreb CathedralThe Cathedral of the As-sumption of Blessed Vir-gin May, Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus, or the Zagreb Cathedral is the largest Croatian sa-cral building and one of the most valuable monu-ments of the Croatian cultural heritage. The church has stood in the same location since 1093 and the construction of the present building be-gan in the 13th century. The last major recon-struction was made at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, while the tow-ers are still being recon-structed in stages. The church is open for tour-ists, may be entered at any time of the day, and a mass in Croatian is held several times a day.
ZagrebTIMES 11THURSDAY / 08 JUNE / 2017
Hundreds of food pro-ducers from Zagreb and
its surrounding areas arrive every day at the Dolac marketplace, lo-cated only a few steps
from the central city square, to sell fresh
fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese and cream, flow-
ers… Dolac is referred to as the city belly be-
cause it has fed the local residents for 85 years. At the top of the stairs there is a sculpture of a traditional producer
and seller - kumica.
Croatian National Theater8The neo-baroque
Croatian National Theater building, a mas-terpiece of late historicism designed by the Austrian architect Ferdinand Fell-
ner and German architect Hermann Helmer, is cer-tainly one of the most im-pressive buildings in Za-greb. Opened in 1895 and seating 750 people, it has
one iron curtain and seven painted curtains displayed on different formal occa-sions. Theatre goers can enjoy drama, opera or bal-let there.

St. Catherine’s
Church
The tower was built in mid-13th century to protect the south city gate and has been used throughout history as living quarters, a ware-house, a coffee shop… Tourists can enjoy a spectacular view of the city from the top of the tower, visit an exhibi-tion or buy some local products in the souve-nir shop. The Grič Can-on is on the fourth floor, and it greets the resi-dents of Zagreb every day precisely at noon.
St. Catherine’s Church is the most famous Croa-tian baroque church. It is located on Katarina
Zrinska Square, erected as part of a former Jesuit
complex in Zagreb Old Town. It was built from 1620 to 1632 and its six
side chapels contain five baroque altars dating
back to the 17th century, and a marble altar from
1732.

Museum of Broken Relationships
Lauba cooperates, exhibits and shares knowledge with peer institutions to keep up to date with and encourage modern art production in Croatia. In addition to unusual exhibits and features, Lauba is designed as a House for People and Art, available to all audiences.
The Museum is a result of a traveling exhibition
of items deriving from broken relationships. An
emotional separation may be overcome by
donating memories to the museum collection
and thus recognizing the end of the relationship.
The Kulmer Palace is full of different objects, from matchboxes to wedding
gowns.
A fearless fighter for human rights and the first female journalist in Croatia has always been one step ahead of her time. She became famous for her romantic novels with elements of national history. The statue is the work of Stjepan Gračan.

8A neighbourhood in Zagreb with Martićeva as its central axis,
surrounded by Šubićeva, Zvonimiro-va, Draškovićeva and Vlaška streets, is undergoing a spontaneous urban transformation. In the last several years the abandoned car shops have found interesting new tenants, cen-tred on urban, creative and cultural work and content. Some of the best design and architectural studios are located here, as well as civil society groups and art associations. The en-tire neighbourhood boasts priceless architectural heritage of the mod-ern era.

DOLAC
8To visit Zagreb and not go to Dolac, Zagreb's
central market, would be a real pity. Visiting the Dolac Market early in the morning is the best way for you to get to know Zagreb and its in-habitants.A symbol of Dolac, the old-est market in Zagreb, are the cheerful red umbrellas. Be-low the umbrellas, you will find plenty of fruits, vegeta-bles, and homemade prod-ucts such as cottage cheese and cream, which are a popular local dish. Cot-tage cheese and cream are used to prepare homemade štrukli, a traditional Croa-tian dish which you have to try when you are in Zagreb.
Interestingly enough, the umbrellas themselves have a story to tell. The Šestine umbrella which has become a recognizable souvenir of Zagreb over the years has always complemented the traditional costume of Za-greb, the folk costume from Šestine. The picture of these umbrellas in Dolac is one of the most popular images of the city of Zagreb. At Dolac, you will come across a large number of saleswomen whom the in-habitants of Zagreb still call kumice (farm women). It was a title given to women from Prigorje who used to carry baskets filled with domestic fruits and vegetables on their

heads from the farms every day. In their honour, a stat-ue of kumica was placed in 2006 right at the entrance to the market, when you climb up the stairs from Ban Josip Jelačić Square. The statue is very popular among the visi-tors of Dolac, many of whom have taken a ‘selfie’ with ku-mica Barica.Today's saleswomen are also in the mood for tak-ing photos. Kumica Matica Štef has been selling pro-duce for 50 years, and has had her own stand in Dol-ac for 20 years. Her regular customers, as well as any-one new who comes there, can always find kale, car-rots, lettuce, potatoes, and
other domestic and fresh vegetables. The Dolac Market is not only a plateau between the church of St. Mary and Kap-tol. Below the plateau there is the best fish market in the city, and in the lower part there is a rich offer of other domestic products. To visit Dolac you need to give yourself time, get to know it thoroughly, and find and get acquainted with the best groceries and sales-women. Dolac and its sur-rounding cafes, delicatessen shops, wine bars and bis-tros are the best places for morning coffee, mingling and breakfast in the city. Do not miss it.
The Dolac Market extends all the way to Opatovina, a city street where you can buy clothes and shoes. Opatovina and Dolac are separated by the statue of Petrica Kerempuh, a character from a novel by Croatian journalist and writer Marija Jurić Zagorka, whose apartment was located in Dolac. Today, the Memorial Centre of Marija Jurić Zagorka in situated there. The statue of the journalist is located a few meters away, in Tkalčićeva street. If you go to Dolac from Ban Jelačić Square, you will be enchanted by the smells and colours of Splavnica, the place where the nicest bouquets and flowers in the city are sold. Splavnica is located below the stairs leading to Dolac and is an indispensable stop for all market visitors.
ON THE STAND OF THE RADOŠEVIĆ FAMILY, THE BEEKEEPERS, THERE IS A ABUNDANCE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF HONEY, AS WELL AS THE POPULAR FLO-RAL POWDER.
HISTORYAlthough the inhabitants of Zagreb mostly remember the recent history of the Dolac Market dating back to 1930 when it was opened at today's location, before it was established it used to be called the Harmica Market and it was located in Ban Josip Jelačić Square. The market has always been the belly of Zagreb and an indispensable place where citizens get together while buying groceries for lunch. Dolac is located above the former city walls, where the poor part of the city used to be. The location was proposed by Viktor Kovačić, the famous architect from Zagreb. The market has been operating there since 1930. Last year, it was only moved to a different location because of the restoration of the plateau.

Zagreb offers great variety of places that children will enjoy. Take them to Maksimir, ride around the town in the tourist train, visit the biggest little railway model in this part of the Europe... And be sure - it's not only the kids who will love those activities, so will you!
8Zagreb ZOO stretches on 7 hectares of the south-
ern part of Maksimir Park, and boasts nearly 300 animal spe-cies. The ZOO has numerous external dwellings and sever-al theme pavilions. The oldest inhabitant is a crocodile from Nile, who came to live here in 1972. The ZOO organizes events, workshops and presentations. The ZOO was under construction for two years, and follow-ing the completions of works last year it was opened for visi-tors. One of the nov-elties is a large avi-ary for hundreds of African birds. There is also the new entrance with video surveillance and a visi-tor counter, an additional east entrance, a souvenir shop with around 300 authentic souvenirs that is thre times larger than the previous one, and an addition-
al educational centre. The boil-er room that used to run on fuel oil has been turned into an en-vironment-friendly one, running on pellets. Two bridges have been built and cultural monuments have been restored – the Napoli Fisher-
man (Napuljski rib-ar), and the Lion’s Bridge (Lavlji most), adorned with four new stone lion stat-ues onto which eve-ry child wants to climb to have their picture taken. The spacious Kide-po Lion’s Rock was also erected, as well as a new enclosure for the globally en-dangered red pan-da, and a Madagas-car area. A so-called
“spider’s web” made out of rope, trampolines, benches and deck chairs has been fitted on Swan Island (Labuđi otok) which has recently been connected via Darwin’s Bridge.
8A few years ago Zagreb Electric Tram company (ZET) introduced
free train rides for tourists, and kids are crazy about them. The train rides every weekend between 10am and 7.20pm, eve-ry 40 minutes, along the following route: Ban Jelačić Square, Ilica, Frankopanska, Masarykova, Teslina, Praška, Jurišićeva to Trg žrtava fašizma, and then back to the central square.

BACKO MINI EXPRESSThe biggest model train in Southeast Europe can be found in Gundulićeva street 4. The man behind the idea is Antun Urbić, who got his first model train from Switzerland when he was five. He was fascinat-ed by mini trains which looked exactly like the real thing, so he decided to make his first model in the attic of his house. He soon developed the idea of opening it for visitors. Today he has over 1000 meters of rails and nearly 100 trains, railways sta-tions, and shops. During winter days and the very famous Advent in Zagreb event a model of the Snow Queen ski race was added, and it was a huge success. Backo Mini Express broke all records when it introduced an Advent Fairytale, hosting more than 2700 foreign visitors, which is a 50% increase compared to last year. Backo Mini Express is open for visitors every day.

8Go to Popov toranj and reach for the stars… The
tower dome is home to a century-old Zagreb observatory, opened on 5 December 1903. City fa-thers believed that Popov toranj was ideal for an observatory, as it stands high enough over the city, and the telescope can reach above the polluted atmosphere layers, where the clear sky opens right before your eyes. The tower is in the very centre of Zagreb, and can be reached on foot.

8Children who are 14 and older can play a
popular game room es-cape – they are locked in a room, and have 60 min-utes to find a way out by solving different puzzles. Considering the size of the city, Zagreb’s offer of room escape venues plac-es it in the very top – the total of 10 rooms are on of-fer in four locations. Es-cape room is a game for two to six players (some-times a maximum of five), who have an hour to dis-cover all hidden objects and keys, decipher codes, solve puzzles and riddles, think logically, and work together on solving the problem and finally break-ing out. Children and par-ents can choose from four different room escapes in Zagreb and play the one they like the most.
8Not far from Zagreb city center, a center
for children and adults has been opened which gives you an opportunity to spend your free time in a fun and educational way choosing between 250 wooden games, puz-zles and different brain teasers and riddles.A smart playground is an educational center unique in the world, intended for both children and adults, opened on Zavrtnica, not far from Zagreb city cent-er. It is an entirely new concept which gives vis-itors an opportunity to spend their free time in a fun and educational way choosing between 250 wooden games, puzzles and different brain teas-ers and riddles. All visi-
tors in the educational center have an opportuni-ty to stimulate their brain and keep if fit through play and fun, with profes-sional staff that will help them solve games and ap-ply what they learned in everyday life. The first part of this edu-cational center consists of a smart playroom where all age groups areallowed, whether com-ing as families, individu-als or groups. Here, they can play games that re-quire a lot of brain rack-ing, such as the world’s most famous brain teas-ers: tangram, pentom-ino, the love test, pyra-mid, and many others. Some of the games are of XXL size, so solving them activates the en-
tire human body, and some are competitive, so players need to make an effort to think as fast and hard as they can. The smart playroom is open for all visitors, eve-ry day from 9 am until 10 pm. All activities can be carried out in Croatian, English or Spanish.

These are the true flavours of Zagreb
MUST TRY
In local restaurans ask for specialties from this region and shop for products that reflect the unique identity of Zagreb surroundingsAUTHOR RENE BAKALOVIĆ
8Zagreb’s gastronomy is a perfect combination of culinary traditions – of the clergy, the nobility
and then the bourgeois, the so-called purgeraj (from the German word Burger meaning citizen), and the rustic tradition of the picturesque ring encircling the city: Zagorje and Prigorje, which developed for nine long centuries. In the urban life of Zagreb, the resi-dents always wanted to show they were able to keep up with the global culinary trends present in major metropolitan centers in neighboring countries – Vien-na and Budapest. Women from the villages of Zagorje and Prigorje brought first-class fresh ingredients to marketplaces in Zagreb on a daily basis. This top se-lection available in Zagreb’s marketplaces has spread to all Croatian regions, as it becomes evident in the restaurants all over the city: Dalmatian, Istrian and Slavonian cuisine. They are now an exhibition of Cro-atian gastro icons.

This two-piece dairy package has developed into a symbol of authentic culinary heritage. Extremely simple, yet very delicate. This cult-status duo is only produced from the milk of cows grazing unpolluted pastures, unquestionably fresh full-fat sour cream and carefully drained cheese. Beside fresh bread, you only need a little salt and perhaps some hot paprika.
Cottage cheese and cream
ŠTRUKLIŠtrukli is a favorite coocked or gratinated pastry, a result of
the transformation of the German strudel on its way east. Štrukli are commonly mentioned in the context
of presenting Croatia to the world. It makes sense: the stuffing consists of cheese
and cream. In Esplanade, the most prestigious hotel both in former
Yugoslavia and now in Croatia, štrukli has been enjoyed by kings and queens, the most prominent statesmen, and the greatest stars of the film
and music industries.
KRAM POGAČEPork scratches are not exclusive to Croatia, but nobody is as mad about them as Croats are. The best ones are sold at very high prices. We love pork scratches so much we put them in the basic food product - pogača, the predecessor of bread. Kram pogača is a small pogača seasoned with ground pork scratches and pepper. These small bites are perfectly combined with a glass of wine or beer.
ZAGORJE SOUPCroats love soups and make them from all kinds of ingredients. Broths like this Zagorje soup can replace an entire meal. This is no wonder - a real Zagorje soup inevitably contains enough good cured meat, dry and fresh mushrooms, root vegetables, onions, garlic and potatoes, hot paprika, pepper, laurel leaf, wine vinegar and, finally, a spoon of sour cream.
TURKEY WITH MLINCIIn its native country of America, turkeys are now huge domesticated
birds. The Zagorje turkey is the smallest protected species, semi-wild
and requiring plenty of outdoor space to survive. This is why its meat it fabulously
succulent. It does not require lots of spices, only mlinci, a traditional kind of pasta gratinated on a wood oven and then doused in gravy, as a side dish.

The Fifth Element is a special brewery within Pivovara Daruvar. Their products include: American Blonde Ale (ABA), Baltic Porter (BART), and LELA.
The first mini-brewery and pub in Zagreb. They started by making their pale beer Zlatni medvjed, dark beer Crna kraljica, and mixed Mrki medvjed. Their Agram Stout is a dark beer made from roasted barley and malt.
Dino Konta and Sanja Cvetanović started brewing their own beer after experimenting in their kitchen. They started their Pivionica brewery and proceeded to make Fulir, a pale lager, made from natural ingredients.

For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable component of both the daily routine and festivitiesAUTHOR SAŠA ŠPIRANEC
The great local wine varieties
8Wine is one of the most valuable elements of
the Croatian tradition and gastronomic heritage. For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable compo-nent of both the daily routine and festivities. Over centu-ries, each Croatian wine re-gion developed its own dis-tinctive wine varieties that fully adapted to the climate, soil and expectations of their residents. When you find yourself in one of the wine regions of Croatia such as Dalmatia,
Istria, Hilly Croatia or Sla-vonia, don’t forget to taste some of the wines favorite among the local population. In Dalmatia, it is plavac mali. This is the most important and the most represented red variety in Croatia. It yields soft, ripe and succu-lent wines when offered in a lower price range and origi-nates from Dalmatian fields situated in ravines hidden in endless karst. On the other hand, when it comes from steep slopes facing the sun and the sea, usually from islands or peninsulas such
as Hvar, Brač and Pelješac, it gives powerful, warm, strong and ripe wines, per-fectly reflecting the harsh conditions that created them with their richness and con-centration.When in Istria, malvazija is the most important variety to try. A white wine full of freshness and pleasant aro-mas of ripe fruits, such as peaches and hints of blos-soming acacias. In addition to this basic edition, malva-sia can also be found in more ambitious forms after ageing for a long time and develop-

ing a more complex aromat-ic set. When in hilly Croatia, look for aromatic white varieties such as sauvignon blanc or Riesling (locally referred to as rajnski rizling). They also use many other varieties to make wine in the region, but what they all have in com-mon are lively acids and a highly refreshing character. The wines of hilly Croatia work ideally as an aperitif, refreshment in summertime, or to go with a light meal.Slavonia and the Danube Region are an empire of graševina, the most impor-tant and represented white variety, but also a general type. Graševina is a good-times wine, and is ideal to go with your lunch. It is normal-ly bold and refreshing with attractive aromas of apple, pineapple or citrus, and is offered at very affordable prices. Sometimes, when it comes from later harvests, it shows quite a different face and its aromas.

Highest peak of Medvednica Nature Park, stretching over more than 22,000 hectares, is Sljeme at 1033 meters AUTHOR SERGEJ TRAJKOVIĆ
SLJEME- mountain above Zagreb8Sljeme (at 1033 metres) is the high-
est peak of Medvednica Nature Park stretching over more than 22,000 hectares. It is famous for the World Cup Snow Queen ski race, but is also the place where visitors can enjoy historical and natural monuments all year round. The road leading to Sljeme starts at the foot of Medvednica, near Bliznec, and ends at Tomislavov dom near the top. Alternatively, choose any of the numer-ous hiking trails leading to the top. At the very peak, next to ski slopes, there is Vidikovac restaurant from which there is a wonderful view of Hrvatsko Zagorje. If the sky is very clear, you can even see Triglav in the Julian Alps.If you feel like hiking, take the 6.3 kilo-
metres long Leustekova staza trail num-ber 14, which is the most popular and the easiest one. To get there, take tram number 15 at Mihaljevac and get off at Gračani stop, the one before last. Con-tinue north towards Medvednica. You can see the foundations of the Rebar Villa nearby. Half way through there is Adolfovac mountain house. The trail then goes to the top, crossing the Sljeme road twice, passing by Sljeme well, and leading to Stara lugarnica, Željezničar mountain house and finally Činovnička livada at the very top. You can reach Sljeme if you take trail number 15, which is in most part parallel to Leus-tekova staza, but is much steeper and hikers need to be in really good shape.
VETERNICA CAVE7127 meters long Veternica Cave is the fifth longest cave in Croatia, and a significant archaeological and paleontological finding, only 9 kilometres away from the city.It is rich in the phenomena rarely found in traditional caves visited by tourists – vortex forms resulting from erosion, sand dunes, the remains of the extinct cave bear, lion, leopard, hyena, rhinocer-os, auroch, a huge deer, shell and sea ur-chin fossils, and even shark’s teeth. Peo-ple used to live in this cave, as evidenced by the traces of tools of both the Nean-derthal and a modern man. Roman coins, brass buckles and oil lamps have also been found. The cave is closed in winter, when it is the home to as many as four-teen types of bats in hibernation. TO

SOPOT WATERFALL
500 Horvat’s Steps
The rock behind the waterfall is 9 meters high, making this the biggest waterfall on Medvednica. It is hidden in the place you can reach if you take the trail from Gornje Vrapče, go to Družinec well on the romantic clearing with benches. From here go ei-ther left towards Ponikve, or right towards Sopot Waterfall. The path then takes you through a thick, beautiful forest, then steeply down to the road along Vrapčak creek, first to the picturesque meadow with benches, then to the waterfall.
8The architectural pearl of Medvednica, built by hiker Vladimir Horvat between 1946 and 1953,
is on the north slope. It is an attractive trail made of 500 stone steps leading to several small chasms, vantage points, Medvednica cave, and finally to Sr-nec landing with benches. The marked trail starts at Hunjka meadow in front of Zvonimirov dom, and it takes you 45 minutes to reach Srnec from there. This is a wonderful outing for families with children, and refreshment can be bought at Zvonimirov dom or in Hunjka mountain house. To reach the steps take trail number 39 from the top of Sljeme, parting from Činovničko sedlo and going through a picturesque and wild forest to Srnec landing.
8In 1463 King Matija Korvin granted a royal mining privilege to Count Petar
Zrinski, enabling him and his descendants to open gold and silver, and other ore mines on all their properties. With this privilege the Zrinski family was able to mine in the area of the Mining Garden (Rudarski vrt). In 1527 Petar Zrinski’s descendant Nikola signed an agreement with the citizens of Zagreb, grant-ing them the right to mining. This is when the story of Zrinski Mine begins. It has been estimated that the daily production capacity was 10 tons of ore, 5 kg of which was silver. Around 30 miners worked in the mines every day. Legends mention many secret passages leading from Zrinski Mine to Medvedgrad and to St Mark’s Church in the old town.
8This fort was built after the invasion of the Tatars in the 13th century. It is
situated on the southwest slope of Medved-nica Mountain, at 593 meters. The view of Zagreb is spectacular. The construction of Medvedgrad was ordered in 1250 by Filip, the bishop of Zagreb, with the aim of de-fending Kaptol and bishops’ estates. Around 1260 King Bela IV gave the fort to Duke Stjep-ko Šubić, and then to other Croatian gover-nors (ban). The fort was severely damaged in the earthquake in 1590, so the last inhabit-ants left in 1602. In 1994 the Altar of Home-land, a monument to all Croatian heroes, was erected. Today many fairs and concerts take place there at the weekends. Myths and leg-ends about Medvedgrad have been created over centuries, the most famous one about the mean Black Queen and the buried treasure.

8 Everybody who’s anybody is sure to be seen sipping a cup of coffee in Bogov-
iceva Street. But even the shiniest of per-sonalities have trouble attracting all the at-tention next to the large yellow sculpture located there. On a small junction with Frane Petrica Street there is a huge bronze sphere called The Grounded Sun, the work of Croatian artist Ivan Kožarić. It was ini-tially displayed next to Zagreb’s National Theater, but it was moved to its current lo-cation in 1994. Exactly one decade later, in 2004, a different artist, Davor Preis, com-pleted the solar system started by Kozaric by adding the grounded planets of our solar
system to the grounded sun. This was done respecting the scale of real astronomical bodies. By calculating the size of grounded sun, Preis determined how far the planets must be apart in order to imitate real-life distances. He carefully measured how big they needed to be in relation to Bogovice-va’s sun. In real life, Mercury is around 75 million kilometers from sun. So Preis put his Mercury 75 meters from the Grounded Sun. Pluto is the farthest planet in the so-lar system, 7.5 billion kilometers away from the central star. Preis’s Pluto is located in Aleja Bologne Street, approximately 7.5 kil-ometers from the Bogoviceva installation.
